The Business Card Left at the End of Our Driveway

White Knights I White Knights II

The two sides of the business card recently left at the end of our driveway.

I and my wife live on a wooded parcel set well back from a winding, two-lane country road in the rural, Northern part of Baltimore County, Maryland, the “Old Line State.” Our house is several miles south of the border with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. (The border is also known as the Mason-Dixon Line.)

Although we are within ~ 30 miles of the City of Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, the area is very bucolic.  This area is known as the Hereford Zone. Up here in the Hereford Zone, the electorate has a strong Republican bent. Some vehicles sport on their rear bumpers oval decals with a white background and black letters spelling HZ. These are just like the country-of-registration decals seen on cars on European roads. It’s as if the Hereford Zone were a tiny principality unto itself, like Andorra or Liechtenstein or Monaco or San Marino

Because it is South of the Mason-Dixon Line, many consider Maryland part of Dixie. However, I suspect that modern geographers generally classify Maryland

Maryland, the Old Line State, was a slave State prior to and during the Civil War. Although Maryland did not secede, many Secessionists lived in this State.

Some 25,000 Marylanders volunteered and served in various units of the Confederate Army…. the Army of Northern Virginia, the regiments known as the 1st Maryland Infantry, CSA, the 2nd Maryland Infantry, CSA, and the Maryland Line.

What some consider one of the first clashes of the Civil War occurred in the city of Baltimore in April of 1861.  A mob of Confederate sympathizers set upon a regiment of the Sixth Massachusetts Militia, hurling rocks and bottles. Some fired pistols. The incident became known as the Baltimore Riot of 1861.

Sad to say, such sentiments were not laid to rest with the fallen soldiers of the Civil War. 150 years later, they are still visible in the Old Line State.

As just one example, a short distance South of us on the pleasant country road that connects us to the larger world, a house flies the Confederate Battle Flag daily. I’ve seen other Confederate Battle Flags flying when I have been out driving in the general area.

One can find another example of Secessionist sympathies in the lyrics of the official (since April of 1939) State Song of the Old Line State, Maryland, My Maryland.

(The melody is from Lauriger Horatius, a song dating from the Middle Ages. The melody is more familiar to us as the melody of the German Christmas Carol,s O Tannenbaum, O Tannenbaum.)

Believe it or not, the State Song’s lyrics read as follows:

The despot’s heel is on thy shore,
Maryland!
His torch is at thy temple door,
Maryland!
Avenge the patriotic gore
That flecked the streets of Baltimore,
And be the battle queen of yore,
Maryland! My Maryland!

Hark to an exiled son’s appeal,
Maryland!
My mother State! to thee I kneel,
Maryland!
For life and death, for woe and weal,
Thy peerless chivalry reveal,
And gird thy beauteous limbs with steel,
Maryland! My Maryland!

Thou wilt not cower in the dust,
Maryland!
Thy beaming sword shall never rust,
Maryland!
Remember Carroll’s sacred trust,
Remember Howard’s warlike thrust,-
And all thy slumberers with the just,
Maryland! My Maryland!

Come! ’tis the red dawn of the day,
Maryland!
Come with thy panoplied array,
Maryland!
With Ringgold’s spirit for the fray,
With Watson’s blood at Monterey,
With fearless Lowe and dashing May,
Maryland! My Maryland!

Come! for thy shield is bright and strong,
Maryland!
Come! for thy dalliance does thee wrong,
Maryland!
Come to thine own anointed throng,
Stalking with Liberty along,
And chaunt thy dauntless slogan song,
Maryland! My Maryland!

Dear Mother! burst the tyrant’s chain,
Maryland!
Virginia should not call in vain,
Maryland!
She meets her sisters on the plain-
“Sic semper!” ’tis the proud refrain
That baffles minions back amain,
Maryland! My Maryland!

I see the blush upon thy cheek,
Maryland!
For thou wast ever bravely meek,
Maryland!
But lo! there surges forth a shriek,
From hill to hill, from creek to creek-
Potomac calls to Chesapeake,
Maryland! My Maryland!

Thou wilt not yield the Vandal toll,
Maryland!
Thou wilt not crook to his control,
Maryland!
Better the fire upon thee roll,
Better the blade, the shot, the bowl,
Than crucifixion of the soul,
Maryland! My Maryland!

I hear the distant thunder-hum,
Maryland!
The Old Line’s bugle, fife, and drum,
Maryland!
She is not dead, nor deaf, nor dumb-
Huzza! she spurns the Northern scum!
She breathes! she burns! she’ll come! she’ll come!
Maryland! My Maryland!

My third example follows.

On Thursday evening, a few weeks back, I took our trash can down to the end of our long driveway, where the driveway meets the two-lane road, so that the trash would be available for pick-up the next morning. It was twilight. After setting the trash can by the side of the road, as I was hopping back on our tractor, I noticed a white No. 10 envelope lying on the driveway, several feet in from the road. I hopped off the tractor and walked over to the envelope. It bore no markings of any kind, but there was obviously something in it. I bent down, picked up the envelope, and opened it. Inside the envelope were pieces of white gravel (probably intended to keep the envelope from blowing or washing away), and a business card. Scans of the front and back of the business card appear at the top of this diary.

As you can see, the business card is from one Lewis, apparently an official of the White Knights of the American Golden Circle, Ku Klux Klan. The business card specified a P.O. Box in Glenville, Pennsylvania (not all that far from here), and an internet address: www.Constitutuionalknights.com. (I guess that spelling is not one of Lewis’s strengths.)

I suspect that Lewis or one of the other White Knights loaded up the cab of his pickup truck with a bunch of similarly loaded envelopes, and drove down the road, pitching them out onto the various driveways he passed. I have not yet asked my neighbors whether any of them received such a delivery, but I doubt that our driveway was singled out. If one drives down the road, our driveway is nondescript other than it is long and disappears into a wooded area set back from the road. The house is not visible from the road.

The web address is invalid. Even if I correct the spelling, no web page loads.

A Google search on the phrase Constitutional Knights does reveal this:

About Constitutional Knights

Appalachian Soul is our marketing arm for our 5 societies Finally, our White Knights of the American Golden Circle are leaders who are looking to help spread the word of what the US Constitution and our Declaration of Independence says and more importantly, what it means Merovingian Heart includes our German and Irish brothers and sisters

I have not tried calling the telephone number printed on the business card.

It’s not a pleasant thought that, out here in such beautiful country, there are some people who harbor such ugliness within themselves. Even a small handful is too many. I bet that they are Dylan Roof supporters.

  1. Holy mackeral! Lovely sentiment here:

Huzza! she spurns the Northern scum!

    Maryland! My Maryland!

The Big Ten recently added Maryland to our sports conference. I wonder how the rest of us “Northern Scum” would feel about that: Civil War dead from Wisconsin (12,000+), Iowa (13,000+), Michigan (14,750+), Nebraska (~240), Illinois (34,800+), Pennsylvania (33,180+), Indiana (26,670+), New Jersey (5,750+), Ohio (35,470+), Minnesota (2,580+).

    • Charlie Pierce noticed why the “take down the flag” sentiment is becoming popular: money. Specifically corporate money. NASCAR reiterated that they don’t use the Confederate flag on any official materials but it is hardly because of a sense of right and wrong:

NASCAR’s move is tied completely into the organization’s ever-tightening embrace of corporate America, something that the hardcore Confederates who follow the sport long have deplored, but have come partially to abide. That’s how we have races in New Hampshire. As it turns out, NASCAR has evolved to the point where it is no more a Southern sport any more than the NHL is Canadian. The right things, as we occasionally point out here, often get done for the wrong reasons. When it comes to the flag of treason, it’s true that Walmart, Amazon, NASCAR and (yes) Nikki Haley likely have done this to ward off economic damage.

Flying the flag of sedition in New Hampshire (4,880+ dead) and while driving through Massachusetts (13,940+ dead) would probably not go over too well.

  2. This article in today’s Seattle Times is sadly true…..

Confederate flag is flying here, too, along I-5

Now that South Carolina may stop flying its Confederate flag, and Mississippi could remove the charged symbol and even Amazon has stopped selling it, about the only place left to see the emblem of Southern resistance still proudly flapping in the wind is: here.

Yes, oddly, here in Washington state.

As northern as we are, for eight years now we have had our own Confederate flag park, next to the southbound Interstate 5 lanes in Ridgefield, about five miles north of Vancouver in Clark County.

It’s called Jefferson Davis Park. It’s there to honor the only president of the Confederacy (though he never traveled here).

Old wounds and old attitudes are all around us unfortunately.

    • Mitch McConnell questions why a Jefferson Davis statue is in the Kentucky state capitol: Davis was born in Kentucky but did not live there long. He wants it removed.

  3. Because the South was treated kindly (relatively speaking) in the hopes of healing the breech that flag and the traitors who fought under it against the United States (the one and only true and constitutional definition of treason) were never treated in a way to keep that sentiment marginalized. Nobody proudly flies the Nazi flag in Germany. There are still people who believe as the Nazis did (neo-Nazia of various groups – like most supporters of the Confederacy) but the evils they did were and are so firmed established for the majority it just isn’t going to happen. The U.S. allowed the treason to be glorified. To this day “rebel” is a good thing as far as most Americans are concerned. Movies, books, TV shows, video games – all favor the rebel. Not the patriot who defends the Constitution and ALL the citizens from elitist and racist trash.

    • There were a lot of reasons that they were not all lined up and shot for treason. But whoever was in charge of Reconstruction did not do a very good job explaining that the federal government would have been well within its rights to do so and that honoring would be allowed for the dead but never for the cause.

      • What should have been solidly drummed into everyone’s head is rebel=treason. You can’t be an American patriot and fly the rebel flag. Sorry. One or the other, not both. And the particular cause that flag was flown for is purely and simply the elites doing a stellar job of playing “divide and conquer” with the working folks. It’s a very good lesson in how to manipulate people so white dirt-scrabble farmers don’t join with black dirt-scrabble farmers to get the decent land and decent treatment from the whited sepulcher 1%ers of that day and this.

  4. Washington Post editorial:

When flag defenders say it represents “heritage, not hate,” they’re only half right. Certainly not everyone who cherishes the flag is hateful. But the heritage it represents is that of secession, defense of slavery and opposition to civil rights. It’s a heritage that should be studied but not celebrated. […]

The Confederate flag came back to Columbia in 1961 as a thinly veiled protest against the burgeoning civil rights movement. The message it sends is clear …

South Carolina’s Confederate battle flag is the last on any state government grounds. With its removal, the nation would finally be saying that the flag is not a symbol worthy of respect.

  5. Rash – thank you for posting this piece of reality. People tend to try to make it seem like this foulness isn’t really a part of average life. But it is.

  6. Looks like your neighborhood is not alone, Rashaverak:

In Orange County, Calif., Tuscaloosa County, Ala., Rockdale County, Ga., and several other places — including, reportedly, Texas and New York state — someone, some group or groups of people, have left Ku Klux Klan fliers folded into small plastic baggies with candy.

Apparently the Klan has been on a recruiting drive this year, and the bags have been spotted in various places since January.

    You didn’t get any candy!!

    No surprise here …

Sgt. Kathryn Hamel of the Fullerton, Calif., police describes the fliers as “hodgepodge-looking,” and “of very poor quality,” and says they abound with misspelled words.

  7. Here’s another one: the town of Danville Virginia where they are trying to get a Confederate flag relocated from a flagpole to a place inside the museum and have been threatened with a lawsuit by a Southern Rights group. No surprise that the KKK is active there:

[The town’s ] legacy of fighting for racial equality was recounted during the flag debate last October, when local Rev. Lawrence Campbell delivered an address to the City Council detailing his personal involvement in local Civil Rights movement. He told of when he was thrown down the steps of the Danville Municipal Building for sitting in the “whites-only” section of the city courthouse, adding that his wife was also beaten during a local march for racial justice.

“I fought segregation,” Campbell said. “This flag is polarizing our community … I see it as people glorifying slavery.”

Most of these incidents were over 50 years ago, but the ugly specter of racism haunts the town to this day. Several locals told me the Ku Klux Klan still operates in the city, with Klan activity reported as recently as June 16 of this year, when group identifying itself as “loyal white knights of the KKK” put flyers in yards throughout the town.

The KKK is not happy, apparently, with Jeb(!) Bush because he has a Hispanic wife. It will be interesting to see the clash of cultures, the white supremacists who vote Republican and a Republican Party that might nominate a man who goes against their “values”.
