Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: Sept. 13th through Sept. 19th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (every Sunday morning). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Dealing with two kittens in my lap as I try to type. Reading the news

    yay for Keith Ellison

Keith Ellison, First Muslim Congressman, Carries Clock In Solidarity With Ahmed

Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.), the first Muslim member of Congress, began carrying a clock around Capitol Hill on Wednesday to show support for the ninth-grader whose homemade clock was mistaken for a bomb earlier this week.

Ahmed Mohamed, a 14-year-old Muslim boy, was arrested and taken to juvenile detention on Monday after showing the clock he’d built at home to a teacher in his Irving, Texas, school. The teacher said the device looked like a bomb, and later in the day, Ahmed was threatened with expulsion before being arrested.

“Discriminatory profiling doesn’t have a place in our country. Ahmed is working hard and being creative. It’s a shame that a boy is faced with such injustice in America,” Ellison said in a statement to The Huffington Post. “I’m proud to stand with him and carry a clock around with me today.”

In a clear expression of support for Ahmed, Ellison placed a clock on top of a podium while he spoke about climate change at a Congressional Black Caucus conference. The clock traveled everywhere with Ellison, including onto the House floor during an evening vote, his staff said.

    • I enjoyed Larry Wilmore’s rant about Ahmed and particularly this screenshot of one of the explanations for why the clock may have caused so much alarm (ha!):

    • Absolutely good for Keith Ellison! (And good for you and the kittens – I meant to congratulate you on your new fur family but the Ahmed issue kind of grabbed my attention.)

  2. Good morning, 58 and partly cloudy in Bellingham today. “I should” thoughts are racing around in my head this morning, so should I go to the pool, or should I do something else on the “I should” list? What a dilemma!

Guess I’ll go to the pool and hope the rest of the day settles into place.

    • Have a good day at the pool! I have frittered away too much time online this morning and need to get some things done. See you around the Internets!!

  3. Good morning, meese! Saturday …

It is 58 degrees in Madison, on its way up to 67. Partly cloudy skies are in the forecast.

I have to decide if I will stay home and get caught up on pressing projects or go to Fighting Bob Fest. Every year, the fighting spirit of Fighting Bob La Follette is celebrated in a day long event. This year it is in Madison (it has been in Baraboo where his wife, noted feminist Belle La Follette, was from) . Speakers include Jim Hightower, John Fugelsang, Lizz Winstead, Russ Feingold, Raging Grannies (feared by Scott Walker!!), local politicians and pundits plus activism. It should be a nice day to be outside. Well, I don’t have to decide for another couple of hours.

GOP candidates spoke different places and said many ridiculous and false things. NOT breaking. John Kasich says he likes Mexican immigrants and honors them by tipping them when they clean his room!!

The pope will be in Cuba then he will arrive in the United States. A Republican congressman will be boycotting the pope’s speech here because he is too lefty! He should be talking about abortion and teh gays destroying religious freedom NOT caring about the sick, homeless, and hungry … who does he think he is?? These guys are a parody of themselves, really.

    See all y’all later!

  4. leaving for ungodly hour workout, back later – maybe sooner, my stomach isn’t happy

  5. Good morning, Moosekind! Still hot and horrible and today it’ll be humid, going for a high of 87 F. I wish we’d get some rain.

Thanks for the sympathy yesterday, Sister Meese. I’ve been feeling down because it looks as if the finances aren’t going to work out for our move to the blissful old people’s home. This place actually is nothing like the normal perception of an old people’s home: it’s more like a luxury cruise ship that doesn’t go anywhere.

Yikes, I forgot! Today is “Talk Like a Pirate” Day! Avast, me hearties, swab those decks or ye’ll walk the plank to Davy Jones’ locker! Speaking of planks, I’m going to the gym after breakfast, then to lunch with the Circle sisters, then home to receive the second realtor. Hope this one has better news for us, but one can’t count on it.

Still appalled by The Donald and his Trumpkins. Still amazed at the misogyny exhibited even by women toward Hillary (was watching a PBS round table during dinner yesterday evening), and still bemused by two days of looking after my precious new grandson. He was so thrilled by my presence he slept through my visits. Clearly, I have some work to do on my personality…

    A good day to all!

    • Ha!! “He was so thrilled by my presence he slept through my visits.” I am 100% certain it has nothing to do with your personality. That is the problem with visits versus caretaking. When you were taking care of him, you were probably living for naptime. I think that the saddest day of my early motherhood was when my baby stopped napping.

I am sorry to hear that the finances might not work for your move. Managing money to stretch it to last a lifetime is a challenge. The problem is that “lifetime” is not a known quantity! How do you project your requirements 5 years from now, 10 years from now, 20 years from now? And what if someone gets sick??? I hope you get better news later today … and if not, that you at least have an enjoyable lunch with your Circle.

Arrrr!!! There … talked like a pirate.

    • Moving, down sizing, selling houses……it’s a complicated process! But once the decision is made new choices emerge it eventually happens. We are making slow progress with our simplify and try to age in place plan. Seems like very slow progress though and it’s frustrating to need assistance doing things we could once just do ourselves.

Best wishes to you and thanks for sharing your experience.

  6. Good morning, 61 and cloudy in Bellingham. RonK and I were quite the team (sight) yesterday as we connected all the parts of his new computer and got it in the desk. I did the bending and sorting cables part while he held the flashlight, then I took the flashlight while I connected everything. It all works but it was a process! Fortunately Justin (the young computer guy) had the new one set up and had transferred all the data so we didn’t have to fumble around with that.

He recycles computers too, so 2 old ones are gone, 1 more to go but it’s a laptop so it will be easier to deal with.

    • Good for you, recycling old computers! There is a lot of stuff in them that should not just end up in a landfill. And many old computers can be turned into “adequate” computers for people who have nothing. My daughter had old repurposed computers that were discarded by my clients for most of her school years when her needs were minimal. Now, she needs memory and speed so I finally broke down and got her a new one (a 2-in-1) .

      • Thanks to the stairs in this house and to the lingering reality of BCH I have a laptop on each floor. It’s more computers to manage than I would like but it’s safer than carrying one around. RonK bought a cover with a keyboard for his iPad so that will replace his old laptop, but my iPad is a mini and I use it mostly for reading with the Kindle app.

Justin is a great help, and the bonus of seeing him is his new puppy…..an adorable border collie.
