Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (every Sunday morning). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

  1. Got up, turned to MSNBC, they have smarmy frat guy Joe Scarborough on, so I’m watching HGTV. Going to meet my team for one last easy 3 mile walk then I get my Saturdays back. (also, I’m responsible for my own training). Not really sure what I’m doing with the day.

    • It is kind of sad. They built the Liberal Cable Channel meme, sucked in a bunch of people to watch it and then turned it over to Scarborough. I think he now has 3 or 4 hours of daily programming plus his evening gigs where he is slobbering all over Donald Trump.

      There is no money in liberal cable news because liberals don’t hyperfocus like Fox News viewers on how awful their lives are and constantly in need of validation for their hatred.

      I feel badly for Rachel Maddow because she deserves a place to report the news that is fecal-free. I have no idea where a smart, sassy liberal like her would be welcome.

  2. Morning all! Beautiful day here in north Florida.

    I am worried about the NV caucuses, what with dirty tricks (Repugs trying to vote in Dem caucuses, etc.), and while I’m not really worried about South Carolina, I just want it done and over now! I am officially sick of hearing stuff like Tad Devine, Bernie’s campaign manager, pronouncing ‘It’s great that women are getting more involved in politics.” !!! You can hear the subtext “aren’t they adorable when they try to play with men?” Arrrgh. Also, apparently a Sanders supporter tried to place an obituary for Hillary Clinton in the Las Vegas paper, dated today – got him a visit from the Secret Service, he said it was an attempt at “political humor”. yeah, right. The editorial you linked and cited above is right – the waves of mysogyny are just going to get stronger and more frequent if Hillary is elected, but if there’s one woman in America who can take it, it’s her.

    I think I’ll try to stay away from GOS today – if Hillary wins the NV caucuses, it will be awful, and if she loses, it will be worse.

    • The Tad Devine quote was awful and this is EXACTLY the thought I had: “aren’t they adorable when they try to play with men?”

      He is an old-time pol giving advice to another old-time pol … maybe someone should tell the both of them that women are allowed to vote now and even run for political office!!

      In a memo released as the polls were closing in New Hampshire, Mook argued for the long view, saying the real payoff to the campaign’s strategy will come in March.

      “It’s important to understand why the campaign is investing so much time, energy and resources in states with primaries and caucuses in March,” he wrote. “The reason is simple: while important, the first four states represent just 4% of the delegates needed to secure the nomination; the 28 states that vote (or caucus) in March will award 56% of the delegates needed to win.”

  3. Good morning, 40 and raining in Bellingham. We’re having a family birthday party at our son’s house this afternoon……pizza cooked in the new wood fired oven he has for his barbecue. I’m making an old favorite chocolate fudge pecan cake recipe that I hope will work with the new gluten free flour I’ve been using. It called “Cup For Cup” and so far I’ve been pleased with how my old recipes taste.

    So rain or shine we’ll be outdoors! And given this record breaking rainy winter we’ll prolly be wet.

  4. Today is one of those “too warm for a fire, too chilly without one” days – in the low 60s at the moment and heading for mid 70s, but mostly overcast and damp. My joints serious attest to the damp. sigh. Will be in and out but leaving the computer up in case Trish tries to contact me. (Anybody got any spare Healing Energy it would be nice if you’d aim it that way. The situation is better but no where near good and if Depression takes over…)

    Bernie Sanders is a frustrated 2-year old and anybody who thinks that’s a good thing to have in the White House (or with the nuke codes) is nuts. Yes, I’ll vote for him if he’s the pseudo-Dem offered v. the Rs but he not only irritates the hell out of me, he scares the hell out of me. And my apologies for the forcefulness of my comment to any Bernie supporters who might be here/drop by to visit. BTW – anytime anybody asks for a safe alternative to DK (usually in the HNV diaries), I give them the link here. Don’t know if they’ll actually come, but…

    • We have “visitors” other than the check-in group. I am not sure where they come from. The Moose Tweets and sends links to FB automatically so we are not really alone.

      I am trying not to say too many anti-Bernie things because we will all need to come together. Suffice it to say that his campaign and many of his supporters do not do him any good. Right now he is living in the bubble of celebrity and not filtering any of his comments the way that a more cautious politician would. Some find that refreshing (“tell it like it is!!!”), I find it offensive … mainly because he offends me and others who think this election is about more than banksters and Citizens United. He also ticked off this guy: WARNING – BAD WORDS.

      • Because we’ll need all hands on deck in Nov to stop the R, I try to not say anti-Bernie things. But sometimes it gets really hard. sigh.

  5. I voted!

    Finally made up my mind on the state rep race in my ‘hood (7 great progressives, all of whom I’d be thrilled to support — I voted for the young, gay Hispanic man; but I’ll probably end up voting for the Hispanic woman in the runoff……. though the man who worked for TARAL….. I mean, lobbying for abortion rights in the Texas lege shows you are tough)

    But — clicking by Hillary’s name was thrilling. Just the idea that we might have a woman in the Oval Office….. That was exciting.

  6. I am elated by Hillary’s Nevada win!

    I am pissed off about this:

    • Bernie’s people were saying that it was Karl Rove’s operatives, couldn’t have been them, of course! Turns out it was on a conference call. :(

      I was disgusted when I looked in the replies. Twitter is awful.

      • There is an entire diary at DKos devoted to calling Delores Huerta a liar and demanding an apology. You know, I don’t really care if they were not all shouting “English-only” or were shouting “neutral” – first, I don’t think she would have said she heard it if at least some people were not shouting it. More to the point, even if they were just shouting “neutral”, they were shouting down a revered Latino elder who has done more for Hispanic working people than everyone in that room plus Bernie Sanders has done or ever will do. They had no damned business questioning her integrity by demanding another interpreter, and it is simply the height of rudeness to shout at an elderly woman that way.

        • Why would rudeness be a shock? These are the same folks who called civil rights icon John Lewis a sellout. Clearly they have no respect for institutions and I think that is actually part of the DNA for Sanders supporters. Bern it down then somethingsomething then Utopia. What could possibly go wrong?

          It is a symptom of youth to scoff at the elders and old ways and become impatient with the speed of change. But you can’t burn down the institutions and start over from scratch because once the institutions are gone, there is no guarantee that your blueprint will be the one chosen to rebuild from.

      • It was not on a conference call but in a caucus room where they were trying to find someone who could translate for the Spanish-speaking caucus-goers. The Bernie crowd did not want Dolores Huerta doing it because she was wearing Hillary buttons.

        So they shouted her down. Video at the link.

        There is some question about whether the shouts were “English Only” but because of their shouting, the moderator decided that there would be no translation so it had the same effect.

    • It was a great win that is being spun into a loss because she did not win by 95 points. Meh.

      We knew that when the electorate more closely mirrored America that things would change. Someone said her victory speech was very good, reaching out to young people. I have not seen it yet.

    • Yeah, there was some discussion whether they were BernieBots or Republicans who came in to make trouble. Btw, I just tweeted to Sec. Castro that I’ll be excited to vote for 1st Hispanic VP. (he’s in Houston for a rally with Hillary & Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee)
