Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: March 20th through March 26th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (every Sunday morning). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Slept in, eating breakfast & watching the news. Got to go to Target & get frozen fruit for next week’s breakfast, then take the newly repaired bike for a spin. Made sufficient lunch last week that I don’t have to make more. Very few thoughts in my head. I know I had a dream that was like a ‘70s crime movie, which was weird as I never watched those.

  2. Good morning, 36 and partly cloudy in Bellingham. We’ll be at the neighborhood school caucusing for Hillary this morning and preparing flowers and food for Easter this afternoon. I needed a quiet day yesterday, but between naps and just spacing out I forgot to do several errands so today will be busy.

Geordie, this article makes me smile and think of you……

A warm, woolly backstage tale: How 100 sheep became New York opera stars

NEW YORK — The unlikeliest stars of New York’s spring opera season were raised humbly in rural Pennsylvania on pop and country-Western music, but they are already showing prima-donna tendencies. Not only did a whole new dressing room have to be built for them backstage, but it also had to be soundproofed and kept fully stocked with their favorite snacks: grain and a hay mixture of timothy, orchard grass and red clover.

    • Oh my thanks for that link! I’ve never heard of that opera, but after reading that article, I’ll have to look it up! The most exotic animal I’ve ever seen on an opera stage was when Placido Domingo rode a horse out onto the stage of the Met during a performance of Fanciulla del West (The Girl of the Golden West) which is about California during the Gold Rush. I hope the sheep enjoy their time in the spotlight!

  3. 54 heading for 70 and sunny at the moment. Clouds will start moving in this afternoon ahead of a cool front – rain scheduled for tomorrow. Of course rain scheduled for tomorrow, it’s my laundry day. sigh. At least it will be cool enough to have the fire. The really not good laundry days are when it’s raining so I can’t hang anything outside but it’s too warm to have a fire and too cool to have the A/C on.

Not sure if I’ll stay up for election coverage although the Hillary Writers Group always has a Hillary supporters live blog so I don’t have to step into the cesspool. Most if not all of the races will come in after my bedtime. My son is 45 (as of today) so he’s already in Hillary’s demographic – and he loves both Clintons – but interesting conversation about Bernie anyway last night. He said he like Bernie’s ideas – they are great – but that Bernie has no earthly idea how to actually implement them even if he had a Congress he could work with which isn’t possible because he obviously doesn’t work with anybody. His final word on Bernie was “He lost me totally when he said ‘white people don’t know what it’s like to be poor.'” But then considering not only the conditions under which he was raised but his first 10 years out on his own, that statement was enough to make him want to rub Bernie’s nose in white poverty. Well, there’s a reason white folks making under $50K are Hillary supporters. We shall see how many of them turn out to vote today.

    Hope everyone has as good a day as feasible under whatever circumstances you happen to be under. {{{HUGS}}}

  4. Morning all! Cloudy and warm here today – good day to get some work done and listen to my close to favorite opera on the broadcast today – The Marriage of Figaro by Mozart, considered by many to be the perfect opera (whatever that might mean). But the story is wonderful, the libretto is wonderful and the music is divine, so I’ll go with that assessment. I’ve never heard of any of the singers in today’s performance, so I will hope they live up to the perfection they are singing.

There’s a tax calculator making the rounds on twitter – actually a couple of them – to show what your tax bill would be under the plans of the Presidential candidates. I linked the one I looked at below. To check Bernie’s and Hillary’s plans, I put in a random figure for income of $60k (since I don’t have hardly any income this year) – and as a single person I would pay less than $100 more under Hillary, but $6000 more a year in taxes under Bernie!!!! I really hope that’s not right, but if it is and that calculator goes viral, that would sink Bernie’s candidacy right there. Here’s the link –

I don’t have high hopes for Hillary in today’s races – but even if Bernie narrows her delegate lead to 200 over the next couple of weeks, it won’t matter once we hit the heart of Democratic country in New York and Pennsylvania. And I just saw a poll online showing Hillary had a big lead over Bernie even in San Francisco, so I doubt California is going to give him much to keep going on in June.

Have a great day everyone – and don’t sweat the races today, Hillary’s got this.

    • I am hoping for a surprise in Washington State. I know that princesspat will be in the caucuses glaring at the youngs and telling them to vote for Hillary. I hope they listen to her!! When we were all denizens of the GOS, we had a joke that you could be kicked out of our community diary group for making princesspat sad … we should make that the rule of the day. :)

Hillary will put it out of reach after Pennsylvania and New York, both states where only Democrats vote in the Democratic primary – novel idea, eh?

I saw that Vox calculator and some people I know who are still pretty high wage earners are looking at Bernie’s tax “plan” and freaking out. It would be a big hit.

      • By that calculator I’d be paying almost $4000 more with no gain as far as benefits are concerned. I currently get health insurance through my employer who picks up 2/3 the premium and will be heading for Medicare soon (soon enough I need to start looking into it – I’ll be 65 in October). My student loans have been paid off for years. My older son didn’t have any. My younger son still does but Bernie’s plan won’t help him (Hillary’s refinancing and “date certain” sure does). And while my oldest grandson is planning to go to U of A (robotics engineering program) the 15-y.o. is more interested in chef school and who knows what the 12-3 y.o. group will want to do.

      • Early reports from Washington are that Bernie is running well ahead of his benchmarks in several areas, so I would not count on anything better than a 65/35 Hillary loss. But as we know, it won’t make any difference in the long run, which in this case is when the New York primary happens in a few weeks.

        • It would have been nice if she could have started focusing on the general election but visiting states she will need in November is not a complete waste of time. I just read a piece that said Sanders will go scorched earth in New York. It will be wasted … Democrats there like Hillary Clinton a lot.
