Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: July 3rd through July 9th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (every Sunday morning). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Good morning, Motley Meese! The week begins …

Morning low of 59 in Madison WI, on its way up to 75. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast.

Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. I put up a post on Elie Wiesel, whose life’s work was to bear witness to the horrors of state sponsored hatred and speak out against it:

Elie Wiesel: “We must always take sides … silence encourages the tormentor.”

He died on a day when Donald Trump, the Republican Party standardbearer, Tweeted out an image, either purposefully or in utter incompetence, that reminded everyone that Trumpism has its roots in the white nationalist party in Germany that perpetrated the Holocaust.

    We can’t be silent.

And for those who say “oh, that was Trump, not the Republican Party”, just STFU. Fifty two years ago yesterday, LBJ signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and noted this:

The Civil Rights Act had political ramifications as well. Its adoption caused a mass exodus of angry racists from the Democratic Party in the old south to the Republican Party. And the politics born of hatred of The Other gave the not-so-Grand Old Party the presidency for 28 out of the next 40 years. […]

Southern Democrats (soon to become Republicans) – 7 in the House and 1 in the Senate. Northern Republicans (today known as “Sen. Susan Collins of Maine”) – 138 in the House and 27 in the Senate.

The party of the Great Emancipator Abraham Lincoln, rejected by those filled with bitterness over the Civil War, became filled with those bitter over the civil rights of people of color after this bill was signed. The party of the Great Emancipator Abraham Lincoln implemented the Southern Strategy of Richard Nixon and followed the dog whistle of States Rights from Ronald Reagan and became powerful enough to infuse their politics of hatred and bigotry into the presidency, the Congress and the federal judiciary for the past 50 years.

Trumpism is no accident. And destroying it once and for all, by destroying the party of Reagan and Ryan and Trump, should energize every person in 2016.

  3. Eating breakfast, watching Le Tour. There’s already been an accident today, there was one yesterday, one of the contenders was badly banged up – and he was in today’s accident. Was interesting watching him get bandaged up while riding yesterday. The medical car did his shoulder & arm, couldn’t get to his hip. The cameras have to be careful after a crash, because the riders carry on even with torn up shorts. And they have GoPros on several bikes, gives an interesting perspective.

Got black beans cooking. Will add spinach & tomatoes with chiles. Going to do laundry when I get home from church. Today starts a new sermon series: Jesus Was A Feminist. Should be fun. And my church is trying out periscope. I wish there were sermon notes, because reading works better for me than hearing, but a 2nd listen will help when needed.

    • Is the Tour de France only for men? My daughter asked me that yesterday and I had no answer for her. I have never seen women in it but I also don’t track it too closely.

  4. 70 and stuck there and so dark the system is still in night mode at 8:55 CDT, but we’re getting actual rain, .6″ already, fairly steady with occasional thunderboomers – much nicer than the fireworks somebody was shooting off last night – and I hope to goddess at 3 a.m. because otherwise that was a gunshot. Also thank goddess tomorrow is a holiday – I can put off the laundry until the rain passes through :)

Got my cooking done – 3rd week in a row of cooked chicken I got in the deli section, potato salad, green bean salad, cukes, and cherry tomatoes. (A little boring but good – and most of next week I’ll be in St. Louis at NN.) All veggies from the Farmers’ Market as are the peaches that will be a large part of my desserts for the week. Lemon muffins which I hope came out right because I forgot to set the timer. I’ll try one when they’ve cooled enough to get out of the tins. I’ve got both dark chocolate squares and dark chocolate ice cream stashed back if I run short of calories which I probably won’t due to the mayo in the cold veggie salads.

The Hillary-FBI thing was causing heart-bernings at GOS Friday and yesterday. Some of our team were getting upset but folks reminded them that 1) Hillary is a witness, she’s not being investigated, the last witness so this will wrap up soon, 2) Hillary told us months ago that she’d be doing this interview in July, 3) this is the Friday afternoon news dump before a major holiday, and 4) Clinton Rules says everything about Hillary (and Bill) must be reported negatively if there is any possible way to slant it and we should all be used to it by now. (Nobody says you have to like it, but do please remember it.) Also the Bill/Loretta Lynch thing – and pretty much same advice with the added “Bill does the meet-and-greet thing with everybody who has a Secret Service detail, it would have looked just as bad if he hadn’t met her because Clinton Rules.

    Got some internet stuff to do – might as well do it now, I can’t do anything else on my list as they require it to be not raining. :) Bright the day, Meeses. {{{{HUGS}}}}

    • Yes, I noticed that all the berners in my Twitter follow had to Tweet out that Hillary will soon be indicted and THEN their unblemished hero will become the Democratic Party nominee!!1!! Really, if that is what folks are pinning their hopes on, I feel sorry for them.

This, tweeted out yesterday, made me laugh:

      He, literally, missed the boat!

      • You want a real laugh, it’s actually being suggested in some places (like one of the Russian news outlets) that Bernie become Trump’s Veep, based largely on Trump’s support of Bernie against “Evil Hillary” and Bernie’s obvious reluctance to go after Trump.

  5. Good morning, 56 and cloudy in Bellingham. Everything is ready to move out to the patios for our family party but the air smells like rain so I’ll wait a bit. We’ll barbecue rain or shine, but real rain means the indoor plan will have to happen. Busy day!

    Best Sunday wishes to all.

  6. Good morning, Moosekind! Back from our two days at the beach, which were wonderful despite the rain on Friday. We still managed to have a good time. I rarely get to have one-on-one conversations with Elder Son and DIL because usually they’re cooking and running around when we’re at their house, or we’re cooking and running around when they’re at our house. Was able to spend lots of time with Mr. Newbaby and that’s good, because both his parents will be out of town for business on St. Swithin’s Day and I’ll be filling in.

We had a lovely shower early this morning, so my flowers and crops are happy. It’s been cloudy all day. Current temp. here in NoVa is 67 F., going up to 72 F.

Waiting for hubby to wake up (he woke too early this morning) so we can have lunch and go to buy a mattress at the half-off sale. Too much is going on at home and in the world—poor Elie Wiesel dying, Hill at the FBI, Bill being castigated for meeting with Loretta, and so on.

We have a barbecue at Younger Son’s house at 4, so must start running around to get ready. Did not do a thing all morning because we were watching a very exciting and talkworthy Formula I Grand Prix. Have a great Sunday, Meese!

  7. Good day all! I was so lazy this morning – woke up and did the dog morning routine (one out the front on a leash to pee, the other in back, then cookie for little dog, switch places with him in back, big dog inside, morning pill and biscuit for big dog – they have to be kept separate or they’ll fight) and then just went back to sleep till after noon! But I’m feeling awake and rested now so I guess I needed it. It’s warm and cloudy here, I think we’re supposed to have chance of thunderstorms every day, highs in the 90’s for the foreseeable future. I need to start buying lottery tickets again so I have a chance to finance a second home in Seattle for the summer – watching all the M’s home games, visiting my favorite knitting shop, enjoying the cool evenings from May thru October, that would be perfect! I can dream, can’t I? lol

I was glad to see last night that Hillary spent the evening at Hamilton enjoying herself after talking to the FBI in the morning – as they say on twitter, like a BOSS! The BerntEnders are pretty hilarious though, hoping desperately for an indictment, even though that would NOT result in Sanders being the nominee – it would be Biden, imo. And of course the speculation is ridiculous – if anyone from the President on down thought there was any wrongdoing or chance of further legal action against Hillary, they would never have endorsed her. It’s just all ridiculous, but I hope will end soon with an FBI statement.

Joy Reid linked in twitter this very interesting and scary article about the rise of right wing racist nationalist movements in both the US and Europe and the connections between them.
It’s scary and depressing reading, but in case anyone needed more motivation to work for Hillary’s election and a Democratic sweep of House and Senate and state and local government elections, just read this and you’ll be motivated for sure.

Glad you were able to go to the beach, Diana! I have fond memories of going to Rehoboth with friends when I lived in DC – summer long weekend rituals, much fun! I’m only about an hour and a quarter from the beach here in Florida, but I rarely go any more – I need to start popping one of the dogs in the car and driving over to Crescent Beach, the nearest one to us, just to walk and see the ocean. I prefer it in the winter though.

Ok, off to check my twitter feed and check in on some games – have a great day everyone!

  8. Good morning, meese! Monday …

It is 55 degrees in Madison on its way up to 77. The forecast calls for variable cloudiness.

Happy Fourth of July! So far the run up to the 4th has not been bad for noise … a few pops while I was trying to doze off interrupted my sleep cycle but I was tired enough to ignore them. Tonight will probably be worse.

Our country is both infuriating and sad. The case of the Emirati man wrestled to the ground at gun point by hyped up suburban cops in Ohio for the crime of “wearing traditional garb” and “speaking Arabic into a cell phone” while checking into a hotel is an example of what happens when demagogues whip people into mass hysteria. The police told him “it is a very regrettable circumstance that occurred for you”. I guess the visitor to our country should be glad they didn’t shoot him and issue the apology to his next-of-kin instead. The UAE has now issued an advisory to their citizens traveling abroad “to avoid wearing Emirati national dress in public ‘in order to preserve their safety.’ ” :(

Today is a catch-up day for me, trying to get a few steps ahead of the short work week. See all y’all later!

  9. Happy 4th y’all

Relaxed yesterday after Sunday morning blog chores.

Will do the same today – the BBQ I was invited to was cancelled – hubby went in to work today.
Will be celebrating Louis Armstrong Day over at orange at 11AM – then will be lazy :)

    A music preview

    Have a good day all!

  10. Good morning, Moosekind, and happy Fourth! It’s going to rain like hell all day. Currently the skies are overcast, temp. 66 F. going up to 73 F. Was supposed to make pasta salad and blueberry cake for the block party this evening—now, I’m not sure what to do.

Lots to do at home anyway, after being gone for two days and doing not one household chore yesterday. We have to move the boxes that were packed last October down to the garage so there will be room for the new bed. Some of the components of the new bed were delivered damaged, so we’ll have to get that sorted.

Hope nothing much happens today. I need time to recover from all the stuff that’s already happened! So much for the fireworks, people, the rain is going to put them all out. Wishing everyone a good Fourth!

  11. Nice to have a 3 day weekend. The weather person is saying that the UV index will reach the maximum on the scale today — she was saying everyone needs to wear sunscreen & reapply frequently. I think I’ll just stay inside. I’m watching Le Tour & I keep flipping over to NASA TV because the Juno probe is arriving at Jupiter today, I’m expecting to see something, but not yet.

    • and Cavendish won today’s stage, by literally a tire width, they showed the photo finish & the other guy’s tire is only behind him by the width of Cav’s tire. just amazing

  12. Happy 4th of July – rain cleared off yesterday around noon so I got 10 KHWs for the day, then moved back in after dark. Temps dropped to upper 60s and are still there, barely, with rain off and on at the moment although we’re heading for mid- to upper-80s today. Got 1″ rain yesterday and .6″ so far today. It’s supposed to start moving off soon at which time I’ll do my laundry I normally would have done yesterday. :) Actually, I’m going to do my laundry anyway and see if I can get it to dry inside in this humidity. sigh. With judicious use of fans (and closing/curtaining the west windows) I managed to not use the A/C yesterday and am hoping for the same today.

    I’ll visit GOS, staying in the Hillary and when it posts the Pootie diaries – will check out Denise’s diary on Louis Armstrong as soon as my system can stand it (I need quiet until at least my 2nd cup of coffee – heh). Hoping the rain will come back and dampen the neighbors’ enthusiasm for fireworks – they were still at it, and I was awake to hear it, at midnight last night. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{Hugs}}}

  13. Happy 4th everyone – listened to an excerpt from HBO’s ‘John Adams’ in which the Declaration of Independence is read, and shortly thereafter my computer declared independence from working for a while. It wouldn’t do a hard reboot, somehow it never seemed to completely shut down, so I finally cut off the power supply and then restarted and it seems fine for now. I consider it a warning sign though – I need to figure out what files I absolutely need to save off this machine and put them on a memory stick or burn a CD or something to transfer to the new computer when it arrives in a couple of weeks. Not sure how to save all my web bookmarks though – any ideas on that, anyone?

It’s suffocatingly hot here as it has been for a couple of weeks and will be for the foreseeable future, so I will spend the holiday as i usually do – inside in the AC. I will make hamburgers and I have some potato salad and coleslaw, along with a small apple pie for my holiday meal – I might watch more of ‘John Adams’ while I eat.

Everyone stay safe and as cool as you can – off to check out GOS for Louis Armstrong Day!

  14. Good morning, meese! Tuesday …

It is 70 degrees in Madison, on its way up to 88 with a heat index of 102! Sunny skies are in the forecast. Storms are expected overnight and into the rest of the week.

I wish that dusk were earlier on Fourth of July. Don’t these people shooting off fireworks all night have to go to work???!!?? The windows were closed and the air conditioning was on but some of the bangs and booms were from neighbors and the only thing to do was wait it out. The last clock chime I heard was 11 so I must have fallen asleep. Morning came much too soon, though.

Today, President Obama and Hillary Clinton will be appearing at a campaign event in Charlotte NC. CSPAN will carry it live at 3pm Eastern.

President Obama hits the campaign trail with Hillary Clinton in Charlotte, North Carolina. This is the president’s first such appearance in this election cycle.

Airing LIVE Tuesday, Jul 05 3:00pm EDT on C-SPAN2

Already there are complaints about Air Force One being used to transport the President to a CAMPAIGN EVENT!!!! Sigh. Sorry, that is how the president gets places so that he has high-tech communications and transportation available to him. The FEC requirements call for the HFA campaign to reimburse for a portion of it and I am 100% certain it will comply.

The vulgar talking yam will be in Raleigh NC tonight. It will be interesting to see what kind of crowd he draws. Lately they have been very small. I was following the neo-nazi controversy yesterday and people keep handing him a shovel and, sure enough, he digs a deeper hole. None of the excuses make any sense or help in any way. I have an idea! Let’s go with our first thought … Trump loves the white supremacists because he is a racist pig! The white supremacist movement is a perfect movement for someone with narcissistic personality disorder.

    See all y’all later!

  15. GOOD morning Meese!

Looking forward to watching the campaign event in NC this afternoon

Other than C-span there are also youtube live streams

Hoping this will give a boost to the NC Democratic Senate and Govs race:

Democratic governor candidate Roy Cooper and U.S. Senate hopeful Deborah Ross are looking to build momentum when they join fellow party members at the joint appearance of President Barack Obama and presidential nominee Hillary Clinton for a rally in Charlotte.

The rally is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon at the Charlotte Convention Center. Cooper and Ross are scheduled to speak, as is 12th Congressional District Rep. Alma Adams.

    • Thanks for that link! Is that an official Hillary Clinton YouTube channel? It seems like whenever I find a link, it ends up getting deleted because it is some dude with a cell phone videocam uploading it. I know that CSPAN is pretty reliable and I figured out how to embed the videos before they release them as embedded.

I will probably watch it on TV from my couch where I can live pause it if I need a snacks and beverages. :)

North Carolina is HUGELY important. We need the Senate to get judges and cabinet members confirmed. Can you imagine the mess if a Republican Senate holds up every one of President Hillary Clinton’s administration picks? I would not put it past them.

  16. Already hot & sticky. July in Texas. Despite all the articles about how exercise doesn’t lose you weight, I’ve got to get back into it. I should see if my gym membership is still active. Because exercise in air conditioning. Brain is playing happy bouncy Snow Patrol at me.

    • It may not help you lose weight – it will help you be healthier
      Stay cool!

      • another democrat, my trainer at the gym says weight training followed by cardio makes your body burn glycogen, so exercise certainly does help you lose weight.

I’m two-thirds of the way to my weight loss goal, and may have to make another big push once I’ve maintained the current weight for a while. One thing I hope to achieve through exercise is normal cholesterol and blood pressure levels. I hated taking that statin, which not only destroys one’s liver, but also means one can’t eat grapefruit. I LOVE grapefruit!

  17. omg, check out the google doodle!! it’s about the Jupiter probe & it is adorable!

    • NPR had an article with the headline “NASA says Juno craft orbiting Jupiter”. “SAYS”??!!? Is space truthering still a thing that must be catered to?? Sheesh.

      • There were a couple of famous people (I never heard of them, but apparently “famous”) who, earlier this year, were each saying that the world is flat. Actual flat-Earthers, in 2016. People on twitter were sending them pictures from space (which they said were faked)…..

If I ever get my hands on a time machine, one of the things on the list is to make sure there is actual science education in every damn school & everyone must pass

  18. Good morning, Moosylvania, and what a glorious one it is, too! Why couldn’t today have changed places with yesterday? I never got to wear my Fourth of July outfit because the block party was canceled. Rain, rain, rain. At least I didn’t have to water the garden.

This morning we have pale blue skies with wispy white clouds and lots of humidity, so the a.c. is on. Today will be a good day for solar collection.

Isn’t it exciting about Juno? Imagine, it took five years to get there! It’s so amazing to think humans can do this. Can’t wait for the camera to turn on so we can start receiving pictures. There are advantages to living in these times (provided, of course, one is living a privileged life in the Western world.)

Has there been a disturbance in the force? Australia’s election is a mess. Britain’s government is a mess. I’m wondering whether the Rethug convention will be a mess. As much as I excoriate the Trumpet, he did, after all, win over all the other Rethug candidates. It would be wrong to take the nom. away from him. And he’ll be the easiest for HRC to defeat, especially if he picks Newt for his running mate.

Got to go to breakfast. Wishing everyone in Moosylvania a good day!

    • Diana, everything I have read suggests that there is nothing the Republicans can do to change the outcome of the convention. They have made their bed and must lie in it. I was reading that they can, however, choose a different running mate for Trump if his pick is unsuitable. That made me laugh out loud. Unsuitable to run with Donald Trump??? What the HECK would that look like? It boggles the mind.

I see that Joni Ernst and Mike Pence are on the VP short list, along with Newt Gingrich and Chris Christie. I think it will be Newtie because he is considered smart, knows a lot of big bucks donors, and is very safe to mainstream Republicans. Chris Christie still has the threat of indictment hanging over him and does the ticket really need two bullies? Pence and Ernst are interesting. Pence may not get re-elected, he is extremely unpopular in Indiana. Ernst is a veteran and a woman and hails from a swing state. She is a female Tom Cotton, a Sarah Palin with a military record, and will have 4 years to repair her reputation before she faces re-election after she and Trump inevitably crash and burn.

  19. 75 at dawn – house was still open from yesterday but we’re back to summer so I closed up before I left this morning. Should get some good production the rest of the week, which I’ll need with running the A/C. Wonderful about Juno/Jupiter – hope the pictures are good. Never even envisioned this day way back when Momma kept us home from school so we could watch Alan Shepard’s flight in 1961! :)

Wish our team spent less time buying into RW memes and more time pushing back with the truth. Hillary is not being investigated over the emails. State Dept policy is and of course as former SoS she is a witness. She is not being invested. Bill meets an old friend he appointed to a position in his Administration who is currently AG? So what? Hillary is not being investigated. FBI interviews her? So what? Hillary is not being investigated. They say “no indictments”. Of course. Hillary is not being investigated. (And will the media keep this up for the next 8 years? Yes, get used to it.) Looking forward to the NC event.

    I’ve got so much “housekeeping” to deal with today – starting the new fiscal year – and keep getting interrupted – phone calls, lost students, recently returned faculty AND I need to run an errand before it gets any hotter. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}
