Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: July 24th through July 30th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (every Sunday morning). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Morning all! I’m watching Joy Reid’s show this morning, and the panel is talking about the Khans appearance at the convention and then on O’Donnell’s show last night, and she is delivering a smack down on the woman conservative talk show host who’s voting Trump because he’s not Hillary. It was great!

    I too was sad I didn’t have any more convention to watch yesterday! But I did watch a couple of the PA rallies that Hillary and Tim did, first at Temple in Philly, and later in Harrisburg, and they were great – I am filled with optimism! Trump is so scared of debating her, he’s already laying the groundwork to refuse, pretty hilarious. But this Russian interference in our elections is frightening and I wish the media would focus on it more – what if they are able to hack into electronic voting itself in November? It’s alarming. Equally alarming is Trump getting national security briefings – Harry Reid suggested they feed him false information because he can’t be trusted. I read on twitter last night that in his generally unhinged rally in Colorado last night, he was complaining about the US paying rent on our base in Saudi Arabia – even though we don’t have a base in Saudi Arabia. Someone suggested maybe he had gotten some info in his first briefing that said we have a secret base in SA, and perhaps that’s what he was talking about, and thus already spilling secrets. I think that’s unlikely, but I do think Manafort is very close to Putin and the two of them are manipulating Trump – it’s really alarming that even more hacks of Democratic organizations have been uncovered.

    I decided that I will not be silenced in my WOW guild about support for our nominee – I put a link at our guild website to a great piece about Hillary and said “to all the Bernie supporters here, some information to help all of us move forward together to work to elect Hillary and stop Trump.” If I get any blowback about it, then I will know that our guild is no longer the place for me, which will make me extremely sad. But if we’re supposed to be a political guild in WOW (we’re very, very rare in that) supporting Democrats, then I should be able to rejoice in the Democratic nominee and talk about how to get her to the White House without worrying constantly about the feelings of Bernie supporters. I am just over that. By the way, here’s the link to the article – http://crooksandliars.com/2016/07/hillary-clinton-i-know

    Ok, opera today – Verdi’s Otello – not a big Verdi fan, but it’s a great opera so worth listening to as long as the singing is good. So that’s my afternoon plan! Everyone have a great day!

    • I don’t think Trump is getting the briefings yet. He is probably remembering an old military base and he is too stupid to realize that it was closed (see Eric Holder’s assessment of The Donald’s Brain that I posted in the Weekly Address comments). A WaPo article I read yesterday said that the briefings may begin next week and that, really, there is no “hot” intelligence.

      Thanks for the link! I have a lot of “Hillary is great” links queued up to read later. I want to bask for a while in the glow of the convention.

  2. Happy Saturn’s day, Meeses. Hot, humid, is already clouding up to muck with my electricity production but the rain we were supposed to get isn’t happening. Sigh. At least we got enough rain last week that I won’t have to water until Wednesday or so even if we don’t get any more.

    I’m having to go back and re-visit chunks of the convention to get my “high” back – at the Farmers’ Market this morning I ran into one “back-to-the-land” type who thinks combat weapons on the street are “liberty” and “good guys with guns are what stop bad guys with guns” – when I tried to show him the difference between hunting rifles and combat weapons and talked about innocent victims the – man – said “nobody’s innocent”. I told him “3-year-olds are” and walked away before I said anything else. I also ran across another of those ultra-leftists who trust the KGB more than they trust America (not kidding, they get their news from Russia and think Putin is “the grownup in the room”) who told me Hillary apparently personally overthrew the Nicaraguan government causing hundreds of thousands of children to become refugees and spouting the NJ report showing DNC voter fraud cost Bernie 100,000 votes. I just said “consider the source” to the friend I’d been talking to and again walked off. These guys turn off their brains and forget everything they know about how the political system works so they can find an excuse to trash Hillary. And slapping them would do no good even if I could get away with it. So I’m going to go back and watch a few speeches and visit HNV over at GOS. And Monday I’m going to call the County Clerk’s office for voter registration dates and guidelines. And next Saturday I’m going to go to the newly-opened Dem HQ and schedule myself for weekend staffing.

    The Court rulings are wonderful. And they are the reason we can make serious progress with Hillary in the White House and a Dem Senate even if we don’t get the House back. She can fill all the lower court vacancies – some of them have been vacant since Bill was president – we can get those gerrymandering cases moving and get our country back in balance. Bright the day, Meeses {{{HUGS}}}

    • The good news is that we don’t need to win all the votes or all the states, just 270 electoral votes. So, willfully ignorant people voting for Trump, a minority, I believe, will not destroy our country. I saw a poll that suggests that the post-convention bounce for Hillary is 15 points!! While that sounds a little optimistic, I would not be surprised if it were 10 points at least.

      Now the hard work: registering and getting voter ids for people … and getting them to the polls in November.

      • Yup – the more the better of course, but 270 electoral votes is all it takes to get some progress made. With the Senate we make more. With all of Congress we make a lot more. But we will make some no matter what with just 270 electoral votes.

  3. My city has had a rough 24 hours — 16 killed in a hot air balloon accident, and then a shooting overnight on 6th St. 5 injured, 1 dead in 2 separate shootings & the suspect (they’re saying singular) at large. And the balloon crash….just so sad.

    It’s super hot, heat index will be 105, so they said “heat advisory”. I’ve got black beans simmering, will bake oatmeal later. Didn’t get to the gym yesterday. Did eat out with my friend. She doesn’t have a live-in caregiver any more, so she needed me to do a couple of things. She still doesn’t have use of her left hand & walks with a cane — but she’s still here so that’s the important thing.
