Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (every Sunday morning). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

  1. So I posted an AIDS Walk Diary at the GOS last night, hoping evening traffic would be higher. Sigh. Shared on FB & Twitter again this morning. Oh well, at least my brain is playing happy music at me.

    • Just went to read and rec – also posted a comment which I will repeat here. Can you wait until after October 1st? I’m tapped out until next payday/credit card cycle runs.

      If you can, please put a reminder in here. (My memory has developed sieve-like tendancies.) It won’t be a lot, but it will be something. {{{HUGS}}}

  2. 61 just before daybreak and clear – going up to upper 80s today but with the shorter days the high is “cresting” earlier in the day and I can usually open the windows again just after sundown. Got 12.6 KWHs yesterday, monthly so far is 292.8 – not possible to reach last year’s total but should be able to reach 350 and maybe 375 by the end of the month. (Sept 2015 generated 458.8 KWHs.) I’d be worried except I’ve had the A/C off since the 1st week of August so I’m not using as much as I did last year.

    I’m not going to watch the debates. I don’t want to hear Trump’s voice much less what he says. Depending on how late it runs, I’ll probably be in one of the live blogs over at GOS. El Mito runs some good ones and is probably going to do it again but if not at least one of the Busville Villagers will. Hillary will be sane. Trump won’t. The media will harass her and give him a pass. Nothing I need to subject myself to.

    I’m soloing at work today and all next week. The other office staff is on vacation. (Going to Taos with her mother and sisters. I’m hoping they have time to go out to Aji’s place – they’re all interested in traditional artistry as well as traditional building techniques and I can’t think of a better place to see it being done – but it is a group decision so we shall see. Aji gave Natalia her email address and Wings’ cell phone in case they could make it happen.) It’s quiet at the moment and might even stay that way all day – tomorrow’s football game is out of town and this week is Bike’s Blues and Barbecue so anybody who can think of a reason to leave usually does – but I do have some stuff to do so I’d best get to it.   3. Good morning, 57 and raining in Bellingham. I can just about see the colors of the leaves outside my window. but it sure feels like the light has changed early this year. I’m sleepy and slow this morning so I hope some coffee and breakfast will give me some energy for the pool and then the rest of my day. Our nephew will be here for an overnight visit so that means we need to have a dinner plan and I need to stay awake past 8:00 pm.

    CSPAN suggests that there will be some other live events beginning at 8am Eastern. The president and First Lady were interviewed about the museum in a segment aired today on ABC and the White House schedule shows that he will attend a reception this afternoon at 3:30pm Eastern at the White House:

    This is a BHD. I am so glad that the opening will take place while President Obama is still in office.

  6. Good morning, meese! Saturday …

    It is 63 degrees in Madison with an expected high of 72. Partly cloudy skies are in the forecast.

    Today, I am going to set politics aside and put up a couple of posts on the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC). The president’s weekly address is on the NMAAHC and it will go up first. Then, at 8am, coverage starts for the opening and I will embed the CSPAN link into a post and link to stories I have found on the museum including the video (and transcript) of the White House reception yesterday evening. I found this article – 11 Exhibits You Need to See at the Smithsonian’s African American History Museum – which has some photos and narrative. I am pretty sure I saw the Woolworth’s lunch counter when it was part of an exhibit at the National Museum of American History when I was there a few years ago. Now it has a permanent home.

    Okay, two political things. I am glad that Hillary Clinton postponed her visit to Charlotte after the mayor cited strained resources in the wake of the demonstrations there. Hillary had been invited there by faith leaders.

    Second, Ted Cruz. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

  7. Up for ungodly hour walking. Sigh. I didn’t get in my during the week workouts, but we’re still doing low mileage. But I need to get those in.

    • Everyone is ready to blame a black man for any crime. Maybe someday people will be just as willing to suspect a rogue police officer. This isn’t the first time, even this year, nor will it be the last.

      I am listening to the celebration’s music and finishing up my news feed scan then I will sit back and watch.

  9. Good morning, 49 and cloudy in Bellingham. Sad news to close to home today……another mall shooting in a community about a half hour away. Five people are dead and the gunman is at large. My heart aches for the lives lost and the grief their families must be feeling.

    My daughter’s work takes her to stores in malls in the Seattle/Tacoma area so safety is always a concern. The reality of gun violence in public spaces adds to the underlying anxiety of her workday :::sigh:::

  10. Morning all – watching AM Joy on MSNBC, my only “must see TV” these days – she is so good, and always has quality analysis and discussion, this morning on the killings in Charlotte and Tulsa, and the different police actions in the aftermath that led to different public reactions.

    What a concept – the Tulsa police released the videos of the killing which clearly show the white woman police officer just killed with no reason (she’s now charged with manslaughter), and amazingly, no public protests. The Charlotte police refuse to release their videos, leading to public protest – and now the widow’s video casts doubt on the whole police narrative about this killing, even more doubt than was already there. It feels like we’re trapped in this awful maelstrom of police violence that happens because they have the guns and the authority and no checks on what they can do – and it’s not just racist white officers, the killing in Charlotte was committed by a black police officer.

    The Museum is a welcome antidote for despair over all of this – Joy Reid has it on now, and I’ll watch some of it. But I have to start making phone calls today, to work my way thru as much of this long list as I can, for our State Senate Democratic candidate. I really hate making phone calls, too – but it’s important work, has to be done.

    Opera report – today is a 20th century opera by Janacek, The Makropolous Case, a very weird story about an opera soprano who has lived for 100’s of years thanks to a potion her father had her drink as a young woman. I’m not fond of 20th century opera generally, but the soprano is one of my favorite, Karita Mattila, so I may give it a listen to see what it’s like.

  11. Quick check in between voter registration at the Farmers’ Market and staffing Dem HQ – mid 60s this morning going up to low 90s and more humid so it feels hotter. Partly cloudy – not sure how much electricity I’ll get – at least 10 would be nice.

    Will look at the Museum stuff when I get home tonight. Glad Hillary, like President Obama, checks with the local folks about security before visiting troubled areas. Our team goes to help, not make things worse just to do a photo op.
