Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: Dec. 18th through Dec. 24th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (in time for Sunday morning). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Good morning Meese

37 here and we have snow/sleet/rain for today’s Hudson Valley weather.

I’ve got to head out this morning – to get a ham and be back in time to do some Orange diary tending – have 3 upcoming holiday music diaries for today and tomorrow:

    Christmas Eve
‘O Holy Night’—a gift to us from a Christian, a Jew and an abolitionist

    Have a safe holiday folks!

    • The more the Trumpians let their freak flags fly, the more people will be repulsed by the incoming administration. It just makes our job of resistance easier.

        • I am reading a lot of think pieces about what the “Unified Republican Government” really means and what it can possibly get done with so many opposed to pretty much every one of their initiatives. Medicare phaseout? Nope. Social Security privatization? Hell, no. ACA repeal? The “Obamacare” part of it, sure, but not the “My Health Insurance” part – good luck with that. Infrastructure? Not really if it requires spending money. Tax cuts? Yes, except that they are coupled with the tariff which has a bunch of people worried.

There is no Republican coalition – we saw that during the primaries. The Republicans got in because enough people wanted to see what would happen if a buffoon was put in charge of our government. Goddess help us.

I think the first 6 months will be the tell. If tRump’s nominees get hung up in the Senate and a few Senators peel off from the “repeal and delay” plan, and more people who voted “let’s try the buffoon” come to their senses and push back on their congresscritters, the die will be cast and the 115th Congress will not be able to implement Paul Ryan’s puny vision for America. Fingers crossed.

  2. Up for ungodly hour workout. I really must put notes in next year’s calendars not to do this next year. Beck later.

  3. Good morning, Meese! It’s RAINING—thank you, Goddess! After all, we’re five inches under for the year and the year has only a week left. Currently it’s 39 F. under beautiful gray skies, going up to 49 F. It’s so wet the dog refuses to go out and do any business.

I’ve cooked the lemon and the two small seedless oranges for the Orange Almond Cake, which I am making out of sheer wilfulness. I’ve always wanted to make it and just never got round to it. For this I have to grind the almonds finely, drain and chop the fruit, and beat six eggs within an inch of their lives. The resulting cake has to be tasted to be believed.

The butter is softening for the hard sauce, and the brandy and confectioner’s sugar are already out on the counter. Dearly, who has been down with pinkeye, is now off to the doctor for a sore throat. I’m sending him to bed for two hours when he returns. I still have to get my hair done, polish the silver, and make a no-brainer fruit salad for Elder Son’s Christmas Eve supper tonight.

Wishing a good day to all (and SO looking forward to Boxing Day, when I plan to do nothing but sit and stare)!

  4. Probably in the 40s where it’s been for the last 24 hours or so – didn’t get to the store yesterday as just as I logged off it got real dark again, PV went back in to night mode, and it started raining. Which it continued the entire day until just before sundown. (1/2 KWH for the whole day.) So. Water we need/ed and it’s clearing off to the extent I’ve already got 2/3s of yesterday’s production. Since I did my holiday-ing last Sunday, it feels strange that everybody is still talking about what they’re going to do. LOL

Heading to GOS – need to check on my fundraisers which basically aren’t moving an inch. I can’t say I regret emptying my savings over the last 6 months for the various folks who need/ed help, but I certainly regret there isn’t any more in there. $2k would take care of all the bottom 5 on my list together, $10K each won’t take care of PDNC and Aji (my top 2). Need to write Street Prophets – see if I can come up with something to get the “urgent but relatively inexpensive” across and be able to shorten the list. Also need to somehow let folks know just how urgent PDNC’s issues are – like she needs 4 bottles of O2 a day to breathe and the insurance folks only cover 3 a week. Maybe I’ll just say that and see what happens.

    Anyway – whatever everybody is celebrating by whatever name, not only enjoy it but take comfort and strength from it. Love drowns Hate, so the more love we give and feel, the more we’re raising the Love level to do it. Bright the day and wind to thy wings, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

      • {{{Denise}}} – it’s little enough I can do, but knowing how many are working to make things better – like you – makes it easier for me to do my little bit.

  5. I didn’t read my directions carefully enough, cut off 1.5 miles of my walk. Oh well. I’ll walk more tomorrow. (stop laughing! I will walk!). Home, drinking tea & watching the news. Sending good thoughts to Carrie Fisher, and to everyone who is ill. My Scottish friends did a cover of a U2 song to raise money for an Aleppo charity, I’ve been tweeting & FB-ing it:

  6. Good morning, 34 and cloudy in Bellingham. Yesterday’s snow is lingering, but the morning rain means the roads will be clear. We’re having our family Christmas today with gifts this afternoon and dinner this evening. Everyone will be here except for our Oregon family so we’ll sing happy birthday to Sophie via facetime.

I finally had time for flower fun yesterday……the rose hips were so pretty with the fresh snow.
