Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.
Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (every Sunday morning). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).
The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.
So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?
…
NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …
Morning low of 57 degrees in Madison WI with an expected daytime high of 72. Chance of thunderstorms.
Have a great day, all y’alls!!
Hiya Meese.
Popping in for a hot minute – will be back later after DKos duties.
It is a quiet morning – thankfully! I did a quick run-through on Twitter and no one has been nuked so I can go back to coffee sipping.
What will it take for white supremacists killing people of color and people with different religious beliefs (and women seeking health care!) to evoke the same outrage from the press, from Republican leaders, and from the “Justice” Department as foreign terrorism does? The Union won the Civil War and we act like the losers are a protected class never to be held to account for their acts of violence and hateful rhetoric. It is the same dynamic which keeps the New York Times sending reporters out to interview Trump voters. We. Do. Not. Care. About. People. Who. Voted. To. Kill. Themselves. And. Everything. Decent. In. America. We care about the people who are working every day to make sure that the Republicans running our government are held accountable and that we make their time in power as short as possible.
Tis posted
A good one, as usual. And another chip off the white (male) supremist meme – that white men “freed” blacks from slavery, white men “gave” women the right to vote, white men “settled” this country… Someday I hope something closer to reality is known/taught. There are many wounds to heal before this nation gets within sight of “freedom and justice for All” – and we won’t even get to the “within sight” point as long as our culture denies those wounds exist. {{{Denise}}}
Sticky hot again, and maybe thunderstorms tonight. Bummer because there’s a triathlon tomorrow, I hope they don’t have to cancel. I should get back into exercising. Anyway, I have beans cooking — I cook them for the couple hours I’m home before church, turn them off, then back on again when I get home for another couple hours, add greens & tomatoes with chiles. Anyway, watching local news, waiting for Joy Reid’s show to come on. Brain still playing that new U2 song, I can’t wait till the release it.
Good morning, 63 and sunny in Bellingham. It’s a beautiful morning so I’m going to find some sun glasses and sip my coffee at the patio table.
The tweeter in chief is back in action, but in my little world all is well.
Best Sunday wishes to all!
Coolish (relatively speaking) mid 60s at dawn of a partly fluffy-white-cloudy day. Got a bit of rain off and on last night from about 10:30 until just before dawn. So no need to water the few things I do water. Heading up to upper 70s today which would be a lot more comfortable if the humidity drops some. Already got 5 KWHs for the day – m-t-d is 439. Only got 3-1/2 days left to the month but still have time to meet or beat the May 2015 475 KWHs or even squeak passed the May 2016 487 KWHs. We shall see what we shall see.
Got the housework done and clothes on the line. Molasses spice muffins this week. I’ve been having soup for both lunch and dinner for enough months it feels funny not to be making any today. heh. But I’ll be eating a couple of oz of that lovely TX-style BBQ brisket I got at the Market yesterday with either steamed green beans and fingerling potatoes or coleslaw this week with fresh blueberries (and hazelnut oatmeal cookies) for dessert. I can’t always afford the Farmers Market, but I always love it. :)
At this point unless there is something I can do, someone I can call, someone I can comfort I don’t even care what the latest deplorable activity of pvl45 and the R administration is. I know there will be one and my politically active job is to call congresscritters and work to get Congress back (even if my own state will stay as red as the blood they are causing to be shed). And in everything else I will do my best to “do all the good I can…” because that is the only way to overcome Hate. And we must overcome Hate because Hate is what put these Evil Rs in power.
Gonna go read Michael’s British Breakfast and Denise’s DK FPer. Then, well, I’m trying to write a fundraiser diary for ramara. She got slammed with water damage 5-1/2 years ago, insurance denied coverage, and she’s been hoping she could save up… Now there’s a serious mold problem, she’s faced the fact that she’s never going to be able to handle this herself and she asked for help. I have no idea if we can get it for her but I can try. “Above all, keep going.” Hillary’s the encouragement I need to be the encouragement other people need. Goddess bless her and wind to her wings. And to yours, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}
This tweet:
TARGET
This is more than likely fake – love it anyway
{{{Denise}}} – love it!
Hahahaha!! Yes, I’m sure the reply is fake (probably not the complaint). I like the multi-language sign off – very nice touch. People who respond to Twitter trolls (I leave them alone!) should consider that as a stock reply.
Good morning, meeses! Monday …
It is 57 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 66. Mostly sunny in the morning with a chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon.
So the plan to stop Herr Twittler from tweeting fell to the wayside. According to his Reich staff, he never intended to stop tweeting – or maybe he forgot – or maybe he considers himself so coated in Teflon from years of staying one step ahead of the law that he sees no need to listen to his lawyers. I hope they are smart enough to get paid in advance. Actually, I take that back. I hope they are just as stupid as he is and go down in flames.
I am glad that the leader of the free world has washed her hands of America. We are not a reliable partner. We had an 8 year break between two completely unfit presidents. What looked like, with the Obama presidency, a bright new future for the world community, was simply an outlier. That Republican Party leaders are proud of his trip is as shocking as it is sad. We will not be able to undo the damage this time.
See all y’all later!
Memorial Day Monday
66 and raining here in Saugerties NY.
I feel like I’m in one of the dystopian sc-fi novels I love to read – can’t wrap my head around the fact that the leader of the US spends his time tweeting out illiterate and uninformed trash and that in such a brief time we have become a laughingstock of the sane world and embraced by vile dictators.
Today the Orange Asshole is going to speak at Arlington – can’t begin to imagine what will come out of his mouth to dishonor our fallen troops.
Hugs to all – and prayers that this nightmare will not take years to end
It does seem like we are in some sort of bizzaro world. One thing is certain: we should not expect Republican leaders to rein in their out of control president. They admire his white-male-NotClinton-NotObama-ness and will continue to say “This is Fine” until the end of their days; Bob Corker said the trip was a huge success, John Boehner said that on foreign policy Trump is “perfect”. I read two depressing pieces yesterday about the permanent damage to our country – here and abroad. We desperately need a win of some sort. It is not enough to watch “Republicans in Disarray”, we need something concrete to show that we can get out of this mess we are in.
This article about how the Paris Agreement cannot simply be unwound by executive order is hopeful:
So he can declare “victory” to impress his cretinous followers but a lot of the work will continue. No Republican president will advance climate change mitigation goals so that makes 2020 a crucial election. Young people will have to decide if they want to throw away their votes again or if they can embrace pragmatism and vote for Any Democrat and, literally, save the world.
Good morning, Moosekind! It’s misty, gray, and showery here today. It’s pretty much rained all weekend. This put paid to my hopes of having the garden look nice for when the family arrives this afternoon for a barbecue.
Continue to be staggered and depressed by how the evidence is mounting of “high crimes and misdemeanors,” yet nothing is done. If HRC or Obama had been accused of even one-tenth of any of this, they’d be rotting in jail. When I’m not worrying about that, I think of Kim Wrong ‘Un launching nukes at us. Perhaps there won’t be a future to worry about.
Got lots to do before the guests arrive. Hubby is still coughing horrendously and our poor tenant has this as well. Proof that I’m increasingly addled: yesterday I attempted to make a cream sponge cake and left out 3/4 of the sugar! Not sure what I’ll do with the resulting mess.
Hugs to all.
It took 27 months of investigation before Watergate indictments came down and we are not even half-way there. I am in no hurry for a President Pence so they can drag this out for another 10 months so that it becomes a larger and larger albatross around the necks of Republican congressmembers running in 2018. I do think that the Angry Apricot will resign (when the feds get closer to Kushner) with a “for the good of my family which is being hounded and harrassed” ranting speech. A quick pardon for Jared and Ivanka and then a golf cart ride into the sunset. He can return to NYC and count the cash that came in from his leveraging the presidency to promote his business interests. Presidenting is too hard for a lazy man who wants to golf and watch cable news all day.
I am sorry to hear your hubby is still suffering from the sickness that afflicted your household! I hope your family gathering lifts everyone’s spirits.
anotherdemocrat, I wondered what all the buzz on Twitter over a women-only movie screening was about and finally got up to speed via an NPR article. Wonderfully handled by the Alamo Drafthouse social media account and – hahahahaha – they added a SECOND screening! Take that butthurt MRAs!! That article also included an Ann Richards PSA done for Alamo Drafthouse.
She was something else, wasn’t she?
Yep, I follow them on twitter & saw their responses. Made me proud. And the Ann Richards “no talking” announcement is my favorite of course
Thanks for this, Jan! Did you ever read her biography? I learned she went dressed as a giant tampon to a costume party. She was something else!
I wish there really were another plane of existence so Ann, Molly Ivins, Shirley Chisholm, Barbara Jordan, and Bella Abzug could watch what’s going on now and make caustic remarks.
Better still if they were all reincarnated and mixing it up down here!
Thunder & lightning last night, but calm this morning — at least the racers in the triathlon will get their race in. But we’re supposed to get more rain later today. Today’s plan: get my thawed-out oatmeal & lunch into 4 containers. Clear out dvr for next weekend’s Torchwood marathon (spinoff of Dr Who), and I swear I’m getting in a 30 minute walk. Got to re-start somewhere. And yep, brain is still playing that same U2 song. I need them to release it, so I can put it in my walking playlist.
54 at dawn of another clear except for some fluffy clouds day – heading for the 80s. Which chunk of the 80s we shall see but as long as the humidity stays low, I’m fine with whatever. Reached 453 KHWs m-t-d last night. with essentially (counting today) 3 days left in the month. Looks like (crosses fingers) we’re going to at least meet the May 2015 of 476 and might meet or beat the May 2017 of 487.6 – which if one wished to take as a “good omen” go for it. :)
When the world was at war life had to be divided. The War raged on and if you were able to do anything about it, you gave it your attention and did it, but most people were not actively a part of it. They gave blood, bought bonds (or stamps until they equaled a bond), donated what they could when they could. But most of their days were spent dealing with the “normal” stuff of work or school (or both), taking care of house and kids, and so on. Their war was how to feed a family nutritious meals with rationing, how to get their errands done with a A ration card – and how to keep up morale “for the duration”. I use war analogies for what we’re going through mostly because of the time frame. Emergencies like hurricanes, floods, or volcano eruptions are very short. They require an urgent all-out effort to deal with, but after that it’s just clean up the mess. Our participation in WWII was 3 years 9 months. The Civil War was 4 years and 3 weeks. All hands to the pumps works for those who can get to the pumps (in this case our elected officials). The rest of us must do what we can to support them, “enlist” to run for office ourselves if viable, and go about our daily lives as best we can – divided between making as good, secure, comforting a home as we can with the tools and supplies available and doing whatever we can in the “war effort” – for the duration.
Got some diaries to write over at DK – nice to have a day to do it instead of squishing it all into lunch hours and coffee breaks and after dinner. Will visit Villages first. Well, will go make coffee first. :) Wind to thy wings and bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}
bwahahahahaha
Good morning, 64 and sunny in Bellingham. My morning dilemma, do I go to the pool or to the garden? I’ve finally chosen some flowers to plant so that’s what I want to do and I’m not sure if I have energy for both. Choices!
My thoughts are with my mother’s family today. Three of her siblings left their remote Nevada ranch to serve in WWII, both of her brothers died, and my beloved aunt’s life was changed forever. They are buried at the family cemetery in the Nevada hills where they were born. How I wish I could visit, but it’s to far away.
Best wishes to all for a pleasant day.
I commented on a friend’s FB post about my uncle who died in WWII. His plane was shot down in North Africa & as far as I know, never found. It was weird living in Algeria, I’d look out at the desert & wonder about his plane. I can’t imagine what it was like for my mom to not just lose her big brother, but really lose him. And then to live near (maybe) where he was lost.
Memorial Day post up at DKos
It is gray and gloomy here this Tuesday – but twitter made me smile
I was hoping that was my boys, but they are doing a tribute to women in the show
Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …
It is 52 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 64. The forecast calls for variable cloudiness.
The story of the New Jersey 8th graders who refused to be an “I’m normal” photo op for Paul Ryan gives me hope for the future. Not only the story but the butthurt Twitter reaction from conservatives. It is rude of them to think that 8th graders don’t understand – on their own – how awful Republicanism is and that Paul Ryan is the embodiment of it. The Republican Party has nothing for young people – their leader is a disgusting pig who is a climate change denier, whose budget calls for ending college aid, and whose administration wants to deport their classmates and the parents of their classmates. In a few years, those kids will vote and they will not vote for the party of Ryan and Trump.
The assault on everyone’s civil rights continues as the Republicans budget reveals that a key civil rights division in the Labor Department will be disbanded because – heck! – who needs employment rights! The WaPo article also brought into focus the administration wide elimination of government protections in not only Labor but Education and the EPA. I hope the ACLU is ready to take up the slack.
See all y’all later!
Mon/Tuesday. Blech. I woke up before 5, not from an alarm, I just woke up. If I’d hurried, I could have gotten here in time to walk before work, but I wanted to work on my property tax appeal, and I figure I’ll need to walk after work — will need the stress relief. Wondering how many of my co-workers will call in sick today. On the property tax thing — I figure I might as well try, since there’s no chance property with falling off siding with rotting wood underneath is worth…. well, anything. Might as well try. Here’s a video from the boy’s current tour — they’ve reworked Homecoming.
oh, and you may have heard this bit of excitement in Austin over the weekend – huge protests, legislators calling ICE on protesters, and oh yeah – death threats
I saw that! The Texas legislature embarrassing themselves again. Good lord, what a horrible example they are setting for children – “I don’t like you so I am going to shoot you in the head!” JHC on a popsicle stick.
And the threat to immigration protesters is to call ICE and have them deported. :::sigh:::
Good morning, Meese! Gray and showery this morning, with rain expected this afternoon. This will very likely preclude the driveway sealing people from coming today, and will probably preclude my planting the beans in the triangular garden patch. Bummer. It has rained so much it’s been hard to get anything into the ground.
It’s 63 F. now, going up to 72 F. The family barbecue went off all right, although we missed the three members who were down with this mystery illness, as was our tenant. It begins with a sore throat, headache, and backache. Anyway, hamburgers, hot dogs, and wings were eaten, as were fruit salad, cake, and ice cream. Toddlerlicious, who turns three today, did not like wearing the gold paper “king” crown and hid his face when “Happy birthday” was sung. He enjoyed opening his presents, though!
We’ll be looking after Mr. Toddlerlicious today, and will have an easy day recovering from all the work we’ve been doing to get things ready. Disposable cups, plates, and cutlery make the job a great deal easier. Wishing all a good day free from emotional stress!
