It Takes A Village: VNV Wednesday – Declaration of Sentiments

The Village News & Views July 19, 2017
Wednesday Get Over the Hump Free for All

Greetings, Village Meese. It’s Day 181 of the Resistance and time for another Get Over the Hump post and discussion thread.

On July 19, 1848, the Seneca Falls Convention convened. Heralded as the first American women’s rights convention, the two day event was held in the Wesleyan Chapel External in Seneca Falls, New York. The convention had been advertised on July 11, 1848 in the Seneca County Courier. Despite the minimal amount of publicity , there were an estimated 300 attendees at the inaugural meeting.

Today in History – July 19

I’m going to leave the discussion of history to those better suited to it, but I didn’t want to ignore this particular event, since our Village began as a support system for those who were determined to elect our country’s first woman to the office of President.

This campaign boasted many firsts, including the first female nominee by a major party. Also, the first woman Presidential nominee to win the popular vote.

While we are bombarded daily now with revelations and implications suggesting that without interference from foreign actors and cooperation or collusion by the opposing campaign, we might have seen a different outcome, we continue to redouble our efforts in the spirit of our candidate, to Resist the tainted GOP and Trump agenda to the best of our abilities.

Women power this Resistance, aided and abetted by our male allies who love and seek justice for all human beings.

  1. Good morning, Pond Dwellers. Thanks for the delightful post, MG, as usual. We might not hear it often enough, but women are pretty damn awesome. Even more amazing is we started it, and continue to be the voice of, The Resistance. We don’t need men telling us what to do, but we appreciate their support and encouragement. We might not have broken the glass ceiling, but we made history. We will continue to make history. (I actually think a woman could win after the Orange Shitgibbon is finished with his attempt at destroying our democracy).

I love the turtle and the kitty. 57 degrees. It’s a nice morning for a walk or a bike ride.

Yay! Glad you enjoyed the posting! It felt good asserting a little Women Power again. I think we should make it a regular thing. ;)

And I totally agree with you. Those who say we need to back off on female Presidential aspirations “for now” are freaking kidding themselves.

      • It seems like women always clean up the messes left behind by the “men folk” so who better to clean this one up?

  2. {{{MomentaryGrace}}} – thanks for double duty – especially with the medical emergency your family was dealing with yesterday. Healing Energy and glad V’s mom is doing better.

I kind of hope Kamala is being a “stalking horse” to keep the bros occupied while we do the work to win back Congress. We’ll worry about who to elect to sign the bills once we are the ones writing them again.

    Gotta get to work. {{{HUGS}}}

I’m glad I was able to get something coherent up. :)

Kamala is awesome. The bros can just step back.

I’m a lot short of sleep so apologies in advance if I miss responding to replies here in a timely manner.

      • I’m late to the party ad always and I’m going to put it in the kos diary, but little old me got a like on Twitter from Kamala Harris today! Can you frame a like? It was a thread about her prospects for 2020 and I said that I like what I’m seeing but midterms come first

  3. Thank you, Gracie, and {{{hugs}}} to you and yours.

I love the remembrance about Seneca Falls; one of the things I miss most at our Village is Aphra’s herstories. I’ve considered reviving them in some form, but I fear I lack the background in women’s history to do them justice (and they wouldn’t be nearly as good as Aphra’s). For now, I’ll keep plodding away with the platform information, even though those posts are more suited for here than the DK Village.

In the Twitter-verse, Kamala is already being attacked by Berners; yesterday I saw a tweet calling her a neoliberal. I guess, just like stump speeches, the same thing is going to be repeated over and over. Fortunately, most people aren’t paying attention to Twitter, so they can try to do their damage but likely with limited results.

It did occur to me that the need-a-savior mentality of The Leftiest (and amongst some of my friends) means they’re always going to be loud (but probably not effective). The need is so great that it enables an ongoing cycle of creating caricature candidates, with little regard for actual policy and actions, followed by the inevitable disappointment when reality sinks in. We saw it with Obama, and I think the only reason we haven’t seen it with Sanders is because he didn’t win…but a good portion of his supporters would have turned on him if he had made it to the WH and then didn’t instantly do fill-in-the-blank. It makes me glad I’m not an emotion-based voter, but it also means I struggle to communicate effectively with those who are. I suspect, for me, it will come down to trying to create an emotional response to the policies of whichever candidate I am supporting for any given election, because I sure as heck am not jumping on the savior bandwagon.

    • {{{DoReMI}}} – I miss Apha’s herstories, too. Also her recipes. LOL Your study of our platform is to a certain extent more suited for here, but is more needed there. There are a lot of lurkers in the Village diaries. Some are bros trying to find some way to shut us down. Some of them curious. Some of them want the information but don’t want to get into the mess they’d get into if they joined us in a friendly manner because they know there are bros lurking. Our folks have a pretty good idea of what’s in the platform. The lurkers who were bernie people don’t. All they have is the bros’ crap about neo-liberal corporatist propaganda. So by doing this work that makes my eyes cross to even think of much less read (i do read it, just in short pieces) you are reaching the DemsforBernie we’ve always wanted to but couldn’t because of the pie fights. Which makes your work very important for the future of our Party and our country.

And yes, the Extreme Left is exactly like the Extreme Right in demanding a savior who will magically make everything perfect. And equally yes, the only reason they are still supporting bernie is because he lost and so his blatherings of utopia are still in the “coulda” category. You will note they ignore everything about bernie’s Senate and Congressional record – under the heading of the ebil Dems prevented him or forced or something. Lots of excuses for no productivity – while ignoring Hillary’s productivity. Attacking First Lady Hillary for supporting the Crime Bill (which banned assault weapons among other good things it did) – while ignoring bernie’s vote for it. But if bernie had managed to actually get into the White House they would have turned on him as quickly as they did on Barack Obama – like in less than 6 months.

      And we who are reality based don’t do saviors. We do real people working on progress to the best of their abilities – even when the success is measured in feet rather than miles. moar {{{HUGS}}}

    • {{{{{{{{DoReMI}}}}}}}} Hugs back! :)

I’m glad you liked the theme today. It felt good to get back into Women Rule OK mode! ;) Was such an empowering part of HRC’s campaign.

      I miss Aphra’s Herstories too.

We’re going to have to have Kamala’s back, but that is fine. I will always promote POC Dems, female Dems, and all fierce liberals – NoBros!

  4. Things that make my heart stop:

I have no idea what exactly this means, but it doesn’t sound good at all.

Short story time…about 25 years ago, when we were selling our house in PA, we discovered that the water table on our property was so high that it was making the septic field ineffective. Despite owning acres of land, there was no place on the property with a lower water table, and we couldn’t sell the house that way. We could have sewer discharge into the stream on our property, but the stream was rated “pristine” by the PA powers-that-be. As a result, we had to have a single-family sewage treatment facility engineered and built in order to allow the discharge; everything that went in the stream had to be “cleaner” than the stream itself. It cost about $20,000 altogether, and that was 25 or so years ago. If this is what Aji is facing…sigh

    • I hope to heaven she expands on that soon. Yeah, that comes under the heading of “make my heart stop” – or at least drop into my stomach.

That looks pretty much like what she’s facing – totally unexpectedly because the water table didn’t used to be there. it’s being squished up because of subsidence elsewhere on the property.

      • The only thing that saved us was the stream on our property; if we hadn’t had that, we would have had no place for waste. Even then, it took a lot of doing to work with the PA authorities and the engineering firm to ensure the stream was kept pristine. So I’m very concerned about this, but try as I might, I don’t have any grand fundraising ideas which will save the day…I’m so desperate I’m considering playing the lottery!

        • Hopefully it won’t be that bad. As far as I know, there are no restrictions of any kind on the Rez – they’re trying to build it right so it will last and have few maintenance problems in the future. They aren’t building “to code” because there isn’t one.

Meanwhile, I hope she’s responded to somebody somewhere about what the immediate issue is because my tummy is doing flip-flops at the moment. Nothing compared to whatever is going on there, but I’d really like it to settle down. moar {{{HUGS}}} and sending Healing Energy out as much and as best I can.

          • Silence on Twitter, and I don’t want to bug her; she’ll write something when she’s ready. I’ve tried to convince myself that I’m reading too much into this, but even I am not capable of that level of delusion. At this point, I’m just hoping the problem is “requires massive amounts of money that we don’t have” vs “a septic system is impossible.” Is Aji known by the PTB at DK? Because if she is, I think we need to appeal to them to help make an “all hands on deck” fundraising appeal possible…or at least find a way to get the word out to a wider range of folks at the site.

          • First we wait until we know what’s wrong. As to the PTB at DK, they don’t take part in fundraisers for anybody. They allow them but that’s it. We do have a community team for fundraising on Aji’s home – the person who responded to Aji’s tweet is one of them – we all “stood down” when Aji told us to after she got that personal loan. If there is something massively, expensively, nasty just happened, we’ll get back together and get back to work on it. Too many of the old Kossacks are gone – the ones who knew and worked with Aji on fundraisers back in the day and would step up to help. But we’ll come up with something.

      • Are they held to the same rules and regs on the Rez as in counties/states? It’s possible that something that might not be allowed outside the Rez, could be used there. I can’t think of anything right now, but there are a lot smarter minds out there that might be “outside the box” thinkers who can.
