I’ve only experienced one hurricane in my life; Hurricane Gloria in 1985, when I was living in Portsmouth, RI on Aquidneck Island. As a native Midwesterner, I had no idea what to expect, and so I hunkered down with my dogs gathered round me and waited. I distinctly remember my reaction when we were in the eye. I found myself breathing again, even when I knew there was more to come. (We were lucky. Gloria hit during low tide, and the island did not sustain much damage as compared to other areas of Rhode Island and New England.)
Today I want to celebrate the good we see around us. I do not want to minimize what is happening in TX and LA; nor am I suggesting that 45*s idiocy can be ignored. But August recess is almost over, and the need for daily/weekly calls to our reps will be essential once again. We are more aware than ever of the need to confront racism and sexism in all its forms, and there will be ongoing calls for support as Harvey moves on and the rebuilding begins. We’re far from out of the storm, but today, let’s create and enjoy a brief breathing space.

Good morning, Meese and thanks for the spam free zone, DoReMi. Another excellent diary and I will forgive you for the absence of Bassett hounds. But just this one time. ????
Although I’m saying it’s the heat, the reason I’m going to be restricting my time in Orange is because of hpg. I’ve decided it’s more “me not you” and if hpg bothers me, you guys don’t need to say anything to him. I can’t handle then”every reply is a tweet” and his “grouping together” involves more than just his first thread of the day and takes up my entire tablet screen and more. Obviously, I will post in both the morning and evening threads. I will still tweet up the diaries for bfitz. However, I’m not going to hang out in them. The feeling of community is important to me and it’s starting to fade. I don’t want that and, if it happens, I will probably leave and hang with all the outcasts at squirrel. I’m sorry for the rant.
Well, I’m about to get my ass out the door. Actually got down to 68 and that’s good walking weather. Again, sorry for being Debbie Downer.
Since you noticed…
And I totally get your thinking about the drawing back. The feeling of community HAS lessened, and while some of that is probably inevitable, I do think the lack of conversation/community-building is part of it too. I would spend more time at Squirrel…it’s definitely community there…but I don’t feel like they’re in the same place re Resistance as I am. It’s fun; it’s snarky; and I love the folks there. But I get more news about HOW to resist at DK and here (and Twitter). So as much as I love Squirrel, I’ll probably continue to only drop in periodically.
Yes. It was obvious in the last diary that didn’t have hpg in it (we were concerned we’d upset him). The flow of conversation was great. The number of comments even higher than when hpg is dumping tweets. So, others are also noticing. I have folks recommending my posts that are “new” to me and don’t comment. That’s why I will remain to put my two cents worth in because folks are reading. One has started commenting.
Yes, the resistance info is better at the ????and the community at squirrel feels more like a family reunion than a community, but it’s free of spam.
I just took a quick look in the Village (still rec’ing comments) and saw hpg had replied to one partial sentence I’d written about Houston being a photo op, with six tweets.
I rest my case. Now, time to get ready for the SPCA and lunch. {{{HUGS}}}
{{{DoReMI}}} – I will always be proud, always be able to be proud, of my home state in a “clear and present emergency” – we won’t go into reactions to emergencies that aren’t “clear” even if present – and remember it was a Texan (Molly Ivins) who said about really bad stuff that you have to laugh, cry, or throw up and laughing’s easier on the system.
Philly’s got at diary up and I’ve got to check-in, then over to DK and deal with 3 or 4 diaries there. And oh yeah, I’ve got work to do. :) – I’ll be back and forth (I hope) most of the day. moar {{{HUGS}}}
Morning meese…Thank you Sher for a little respite from the bombardment of “fake” news we have to see everyday. Great pics by the way.
Glad to see Gracie is doing OK while her city drowns around her…Looks like NO and LA are going to get a dose of Harvey now.
{{{hugs}}}
{{{Batch}}} – always happy to see you. moar {{{HUGS}}}
{{{Fitz}}} I’m always happy to see you too…moar {{{Hugs}}]
Morning, Batch. I was ready for a little lightness; I know it’s privilege to be able to indulge in that, but allies can’t be allies if they’re burned out too. The news from TX and LA is so hard to fathom…until you read tweets like this:
I don’t want to engage in disaster porn, but these sorts of images bring home the reality of what people are facing.
{{{Sher}}}…I’ve been through a lot of hurricanes starting with the first I remember being Donna in 1960 as I was living in Norfolk,VA and of of course Andrew in 92 in FL, plus others. I’ve also been through a typhoon while living in the Philippines as a kid while my dad was stationed at Subic Bay. Never worried too much about any of them as I’ve pretty much always said when it’s my time it’s my time. That’s not to say I take them lightly…I’m more like Lt. Dan roaring in the face of a hurricane…lol
It’s always great to see people helping people less fortunate. It’s also enlightening to see assholes like Trump and Osteen show their true selves for everyone to see.
Where are you Gracie? Haven’t heard from you today!
I just got a message from her and she’s fine.
Good. moar {{{HUGS}}}
