Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: Sept. 3rd through Sept. 9th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (every Sunday morning). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. This is how NOT to do leadership. Putting your district above the needs of the rest of the state, and your caucus, and then allowing yourself to be made into a talking point for the Republicans. Good riddance: Peter Barca steps down as leader of Wisconsin Assembly Democrats

Last month, Barca was one of three Democrats to join majority Republicans to vote in favor of a nearly $3 billion tax incentive package to lure Taiwanese electronics giant Foxconn to southeastern Wisconsin, a project that could bring jobs and research money to his district. […]

Rep. Jimmy Anderson, D-Fitchburg, in a statement last month to the Wisconsin State Journal, echoed many of Subeck’s concerns.

“I get that Rep. Barca believes that Foxconn will be good for his district, but the vast majority of the caucus disagreed with the Foxconn deal,” Anderson said. “What resulted was a confusing display of contradictory public statements and more complaints about the process rather than the very serious substantive concerns about the bill.”

Barca should have let another Democrat serve as the voice of the caucus during that debate, Anderson said.

FoxCONn will be terrible for Wisconsin families for decades, defunding our schools, diverting money needed for roads and infrastructure in districts not represented by Peter Barca. And the likelihood of any of the jobs being family supporting is slim to none.

Thanks, Barca, for giving Republicans this ammunition:

“Peter Barca took a reasonable vote in favor of good-paying Wisconsin jobs, and his extreme Democrat caucus ousted him for it,” said Mark Morgan, executive director of the state Republican Party.

  2. Good morning (uncertainly), Meese. Despite the fact that’s gorgeous here in NoVa, with a current temp. of 50 F., going up to 72 F. (unheard-of weather for this time of year), I am worried. A huge earthquake in Mexico—Irma and now Jose bearing down—fires in the West—what next? Gaia is displeased!

Hoping to have a day to myself today, aside from obvious chores like beds and dishes. Would like to finally finish Chapter 12 and perhaps start on Chapter 13.

I gather that HRC’s new book is not receiving good press. Screw ’em. I still haven’t recovered from what happened in November. I didn’t think we’d all awaken each day filled with existential dread. Hubby had his third consultation with a doctor, this time by telemedicine, yesterday and was told that the Coumadin he takes is greatly exacerbating his condition. The doctor said he can expect to be laid up until Sept. 30. Wow.

It’s breakfast time, so will simply say, have a good day and pray for the afflicted.

    • This: “HRC’s new book is not receiving good press”. Only from the usual suspects – the bros who write “think” pieces from their visceral hatred of women in general and Hillary Clinton in particular and those egged on by the left-of-the-left that want Hillary to disappear. Tough sh*t, boyos, she – and we – aren’t going anywhere. I am ready for this fight because I think we need to get all this crap out in the open so the Democratic Party base can put together our list of allies. Get it out of your system, berners, and then either join with the party base to win in 2018 or go away.

      • you will like this:

I've been seething all day about the response to Hillary's book, and I feel like I've finally channeled it into a coherent thread.

  3. Slept in, when I called work they were they were totally fine — my supervisor said he’d noticed I was in a lot of pain yesterday. Calling the doc when they open at 9, to see if I can get an earlier appointment. We have gorgeous weather — the kind of stuff that makes people move here. And we don’t usually get till October. Playing my boys’ 2 new songs in my head, because they are both happy & bouncy.

  4. 54 since before dawn, should start moving up fairly quickly as it’s sunny so far, heading for 83. Got another 18-KWH day yesterday and the m-t-d is 121 so that’s good. Trying to hang onto good things right now. Too much not good going on and if I don’t hang onto what good I can find, i will fall into a deep pit I’m never sure I can make it back out of.

We go from breather to breather politically speaking – Pelosi and Schumer negotiated us one on the economic front (and Pelosi may have negotiated one on the Dreamer front). As to the climate/weather situation, well, I’ve read Six Degrees…. I am concerned, and as far as our likely responses where “brown” people are concerned I’m already appalled and probably will be more so soon, but I’m not surprised. We knew this would come if we didn’t change the way we get and use energy. This is as much a known as throwing rocks at a hornets nest by somebody’s picnic site – and will fall as much on innocent bystanders. And we have so many things going on right now that I am also not surprised – depressed but not surprised – that while my fundraiser list is growing, the response to the need is shrinking.

    Gotta get back to work. Travel claims to process. August leave to enter. Next week’s hourly payroll to enter (at least only have a few folks on hourly now that summer is over and most of them are back on contract). But need to check in with the Villages first. Bright the day – and Healing Energy as needed – meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  5. Good morning, 61 and mostly cloudy in Bellingham. I can feel moist marine air, a very welcome relief from the smokey skies we have been experiencing. And now we have light rain, yay!

Time for the pool. Take care everyone.

  6. So, the doc agrees with me that it’s likely a pulled muscle. I went for x-rays just in case. Guess I’ll hear about that next week? And I looked at 4 thrift shops till I found a cane. It was $10 there (noticed canes at CVS while picking up my muscle relaxer prescription — $23) and the ladies at the thrift shop made sure it was the right size & showed me how to use it. I got a note for the airline. Today’s probably not the best day to ask them about procedures… and I e-mailed the venue, haven’t checked for a reply. Anyway, that was my day. I’m assuming no one’s started a (new, shooting) war, so this is as good at it gets these days.

  8. Good morning, meese! Saturday …

It is 45 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 68. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

I peeked at Irma who it appears has hit Cuba as a Category 5. The warning on Twitter yesterday to the Florida Keys was unequivocal – get the hell out. I think of all the beautiful old buildings on Key West and I hope they can handle a hurricane this powerful. I will check Twitter to see where she is now.

It is great to have our members of Congress back in Washington. I missed the weekly press conference that Nancy Pelosi gives and will get to include Thursday’s in this week’s Fighting Back. I happened to be online when it was happening and caught it live. One reporter asked if the deal with the White House on the CR and debt ceiling and FEMA aid signaled a “new era of bipartisanship”. What she said is really important and something that the short attention span House boyos don’t get:

I don’t know that. What I do know is that the world we live in is a giant kaleidoscope. One day certain factors are in the design. Say this side of the room is opposed to what is happening on this side of the room. The next day it could be the front of the room versus the back of the room. You never know. So everybody you work with is a resource to you, or can be.

So you want to have your debate and your engagement in a way that always recognizes that this person can be a resource in the next debate. A great woman who served here, Lindy Boggs, she would say to me sometimes when I would get, shall we say, exuberant on the floor, ‘darling, darling’ – she always said darling; she was from Louisiana – ‘Hale [Boggs],’ who was the Whip, ‘Hale used to always say, “don’t fight every fight as if it’s your last fight.”

Put another way, don’t die on the battlefield of purity when there is a war to be won. I am glad a wiley “old” woman is in charge.

    See all y’all later!

  9. Good morning, Meese, it was downright chilly when I went out to get the newspooper at 7 a.m. Right now it’s 52 F. on a fair morning in NoVa, going up to 68 F. later.

Have been looking at the news about Irma, which seems to be veering westward toward Nashville. That’s interesting about the dolphin airlift! I still don’t know what the difference is between a dolphin and a porpoise, but I’ll find out one day.

Going to run to the grocery store, then to the bank and the Navy Fed credit union to find out how to protect our accounts. Feel absolutely outraged by the Equifax breach—the entity that’s supposed to “protect” our info. Nowadays you can’t even get a job unless you have a good credit score. I think that’s immoral. People can’t help being laid off—that decision is made in board rooms by rich capitalist bastards, not by individuals. The sooner we Americans stop this concept of “rugged individualism,” in which everything bad that happens is our own fault, the better off we’ll be.

(Thinking of Rick “Voldemort” Scott and his climate change denial here.)

Wishing everyone a good day and hoping that all the people in shelters and all the reporters and evacuees will be safe!

    • Someone on Twitter this morning suggested people stop saying that “148 million customers had their data hacked” – they said “I am not a customer, I am one of their products”. True! Credit bureaus sell information to banks and loan companies – our information is what they sell.

I decided to freeze my credit reports. It cost $10 per bureau (another freaking rip-off – why not one place to freeze all of them?) but I feel safer. I don’t have any credit needs right now so there is little downside.

  10. Slept in, eating breakfast so I can have a muscle relaxer. Also using sports rub. I don’t need to cook this weekend, but I have errands I need to do. Waiting for Joy Reid’s show to come on. The devastation in the Caribbean is just…… I’ve seen people sending links for helping, so it’s good some are trying to help.

  11. Whatever is in my backyard I came in contact will along about Tuesday that is causing the rash and itching on my face has spread to my eyes as of last night – they are swollen, I’m having trouble focusing, and I can’t wear my glasses. When it comes to my eyes, I don’t mess around. Just got back from the Walk-In Clinic – I was in luck. The doctor there was “subbing” for the regular docs whom I don’t really care for and was my best friend’s doctor before she retired a couple of years back, the one I’d have gotten myself if she hadn’t retired. She paid attention to me when I told her I’m sensitive to just about everything out there and gave me a Rx for a very low dose of prednisone 2x a day for 5 days and says it should noticeably kick in sometime tomorrow.

    Meanwhile I still have the Sharing Saturday to get out in half an hour and a “not a british breakfast” to put together for tomorrow morning – Michael’s home from the hospital but not up to putting together diaries yet. Since I am having a very hard time focusing on print this could get interesting. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}
