Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.
Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (every Sunday morning). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).
The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.
So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

It is 30 degrees colder than this time yesterday. The weather guy — who is new to Austin — made the mistake of calling our 40s “chilly”. The newscaster hilariously set him straight that 40s is winter weather, especially with 30 mph wind gusts. She said that she’ll be wearing coat, hat, gloves & scarf running her errands today. I was wearing shorts yesterday morning. This weather is nuts.
I have black beans cooking, going to brave the cold & walk today. Definitely NOT riding my bike — did you see where I said we have 30 mph wind gusts? Do some house cleaning, which I could have done yesterday but didn’t. The weather made me think of this song, the 2nd verse starts: “I’m gonna change like the weather, hot to cold, oh yeah, yeah, yeah.”
I should be at the Co-op right now but we’ve got snow flurries. Yes, I said snow flurries. One weather thingy says 25, the other 22 with wind chill of 8. I hope my actual yard is warmer than that. Otherwise I’m going to lose my cherries again this year. Tree’s covered in blossoms that were just starting to drop off. If I don’t lose them, there’ll be enough for cherry jam. If. The solar panels are covered with snow but it’s a light enough layer that a bit of light is getting through. Not much but at least I’m not in night mode. If this sort of weather keeps up I not only won’t make 400, I won’t make 300 and even 200 will be a push. Only got 3.4 KWHs yesterday, the m-t-d is 51 (just over 8 KWHs/day – and it’s that much because of the one 22-KWH day I’ve had so far this month).
RTing tweets, especially Denise’s Puerto Rico & Black Kos roundups seems to be my most “significant” political activity right now. If it ever warms up I’ll see what else I can come up with. Tweeting out Aji’s links and alerting folks still on DK to “boost the signal” of DK fundraiser diaries seems to be my “helping” activity. Both of which seem to get a handful of “likes” if I’m lucky and very little RTing so I don’t know how effective it is, but it’s something. I hope.
Need to tend the fire I’ve started to help with the SAD and do my morning tour of the internets. Hopefully the flurries will have stopped by then and I can get to the co-op. Owner Appreciation Weekend so everything is 15% off – I need to restock on supplements among other things. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}
Good morning, 53 and pouring rain in Bellingham. Our grand son is arrived last night and it’s so good to know he’s just down the hall. He has claimed “the boys room” as his own and loves to settle in and just be there. He’s got homework to do this morning so I’ll work at my desk and then we’ll both be free to do something fun this afternoon.
Best Saturday wishes to all.
