Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: June 3rd through June 9th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (every Sunday morning). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Good morning meese. 56 degrees with projected high of 87. A nice mostly cool day today. Gotta get back to cleaning and getting a bed, my sister will be here on Wednesday morning!! We have a pretty full itinerary, with trips to Vancouver, Canada, Poughkeepsie/Kingston and other places.

  2. 74, humidity 77%, overcast which will keep us under 90 – maybe – but doesn’t help with the electricity generation. Got 19.6 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d is 133.1 – hope it will clear off later, 20 is good for the day. ????

    RTing Denise, Aji, and the Moose/Village folks I see is what I’m doing right now – which still gets me into more sturm und drang than I’m happy about but I’m not drowning in it. I feel guilty staying out of DK – I know there are some serious fundraisers going on there – but it’s just better for my mental health. I help where I can with what I can and if the issue in question isn’t for kossacks, well, they still need help. Need to check TGIF and do a quick twitter tour, then take my walk before things heat up. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  3. Good morning, 62, cloudy and a cool breeze in Bellingham today. It’s a quiet morning, but the family is traveling north so by this evening we’ll have a full house! And tomorrow’s party will be fun, rain or shine.

    It’s strawberry season, so I’m making a fresh berry cake for dessert. The cake part is done and today I’ll make the berry sauce, the whipped cream, and slice the rest of the berries. Then tomorrow the grand girls will help me assemble and serve.

    Best wishes to all.

  4. Saturday Meese
    50 going up to 80 and sunny here in NYS.
    NY politics. The Our Revolution darling Cynthia Nixon is now spending time attacking Gov. Cuomo on Puerto Rico. She has suddenly discovered that Puerto Ricans exist.
    There are lots of things wrong with Andrew – support for PR is not one of them,
    I’m disgusted

  5. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

    It is 61 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 81. Chance of thunderstorms all day.

    The occupier of the Oval Office continues to disgrace America on the world stage, asking for special favors for his patron and trashing our closest allies. Surely, THIS will finally cause the Republicans to say “no more!” and start reining in the executive excesses. Nope. It is just a reminder that the Republican Party is the same political party that changed French Fries to Freedom Fries in the House cafeteria – quick to trash our allies to advance their agenda. The Republican Party is xenophobic and their president bulldozing alliances and international norms appeals directly to their base, the base that votes in gerrymandered districts and who will sacrifice their own economic self-interest to “own” libruls everywhere.

    I was glad to see that the DNC will put a rule in place to require that any presidential candidate seeking to use the Democratic Party’s ballot access be a Democrat. Well. DUH! There should be nothing controversial about this and that it is controversial shows you how ridiculous things have become. The next step for the DNC is to reject the use of caucuses in the presidential nominating process. If a state wants to caucus as a straw poll, help yourself. But set up and, if you have to, pay for a primary to choose delegates for the nomination convention. Caucuses are the most undemocratic way to select a candidate – it excludes people who work, people with families, people with disabilities and people who simply don’t want to be shouted at by strangers to “encourage” them to change their votes.

    See all y’all later!

  6. Good morning, Moosekind! Overcast and rather cool here in view of the rain expected some time today. The current temperature in Ashburn is 65 F., going up to 82 F.

    In a little while we’ll sit down to my favorite Saturday breakfast of almond croissants, raspberries, and cappuccinos. Then I hope to go for a walk. I’m tired of bribing the dog into going for walks—I’m just going to walk my rotund self.

    Yesterday I attended a writers’ group meeting here. Was astounded to learn the founder of the group had died (“passed” as the leader of the meeting put it) last Sunday! There was some discussion as to whether the group should continue or not, and by the end of the hour, it was decided that it would. The format is that each writer writes to a “prompt” and reads it aloud. I might continue to attend, if for no other reason than to meet people.

    A friend I haven’t seen for months is coming to dinner, but I was only able to obtain reservations for the appalling hour of 5 p.m. In real life, tea is barely over by 5 p.m.! Anyway, she doesn’t mind all that much, as she dislikes driving in the dark.

    Found out that Charles Krauthammer, whose views I have disdained for years, is suffering from terminal cancer. Feel sorry for anyone in that situation: it must be so frightening and painful. However, that doesn’t alter my opinion of his conservative views.

    Haven’t looked at the news yet. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

    • I refuse to pretend to care about someone whose entire existence was dedicated to destroying the things that are good about America simply because he is dying. Just as I won’t lionize John “Just a Bunch of Freaking Words” McCain and will continue to attack his “party over country” actions.

      To the extent that their families benefited from their terribleness – which of course they did – it is difficult to muster even a shred of sympathy for them, either. Those who deny the humanity of others who are Not Like Them (and work to undermine those trying to help them), deserve nothing.

  7. Woohoo, it’s only going to be 98 today! Got to buy groceries & get the berries started thawing so I can make my oatmeal. That’s the big weekend project. That, and dishes & laundry. Watching the local news, waiting for Joy Reid’s show.

  8. Good morning, 52, wet and partly cloudy in Bellingham. Yesterday was so rainy we decided to change plans, and now birthday lunch on the patio will be an early indoor dinner. And instead of being in the kitchen preparing I slept in! I can smell the family finding coffee and making toast so it’s time to join them.

    Best wishes to all.

  9. 75, 75% humidity, heading for 90 – and I’ve already closed the house up hoping to hold in the coolth and stave off turning on the A/C for another day. The sunny in the morning, partly cloudy to overcast in the afternoons is cutting into my electricity generation. Got 18.4 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d is 153.8 including this morning’s driblet. Running late because I took the car in – it smelled “hot” yesterday even though the temp gauge was in the middle of the safe zone. Fortunately the problem is minor. As in doesn’t need to be addressed any time soon – the windshield washer reservoir cap is broken and periodically fluid is splashed out onto the engine. That makes steam, of course, and also makes the engine smell hot. I’ve just duct taped the cap in the hopes of stopping that. Replacing the reservoir itself is a lot more expensive than on might think. sigh.

    Aji wrote a really powerful piece yesterday as a response to Anthony Bourdain’s suicide (although not just a response – it’s much broader than that) she’d normally put in her highest pledge-only category but because of the circumstances she made it a public (free to all) post. Goddess, that woman can write! It’s insane there aren’t more people pledging her Patreon account. What little I did yesterday on twitter, other than RTing Denise’s and Aji’s stuff, was pretty much as a part of the discussions of Depression and suicide. I got a couple of dogs in that fight. Need to do my twitter tour then one last grocery store run. (Since I wasn’t home last Saturday, I had 4 places to visit today instead of just 2 – I alternate stores & weekends.) Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}
