Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: June 10th through June 16th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (every Sunday morning). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Blech, hot & sticky already at 6am — it barely got below 80 overnight. But we have hope for rain this weekend, that will cool things down. I ignored the coverage of the summit last night, watched U2 at the Apollo theater, and I am so much better for it. They did Angel of Harlem with an amazing horn section, dedicated Stuck In A Moment to Anthony Bourdain, and Bono said “this isn’t a song, it’s a promise”, pointed to a pride flag on the balcony & said “stay brave” then they played Love is Bigger Than Anything in Its Way. All of that was so much better than watching people trying to make sense of 2 leaders who just don’t make sense & never will.

  2. Raining fit to bust itself – which we need although not as much as folks points west do. Taking my computer in so they can look at the charger – not sure how long I’ll be offline. Just enough “juice” left to check in. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  3. Good morning, Meesefolk. 63 this morning with an expected high of 77; a bit of cloud cover…the kind that leads to an unexpected sunburn if one forgets the sunblock and isn’t paying attention. (That’s a note for myself; I need to get some more sunblock before I head out to reclaim my gardens.)

I see from the “news” that Kim got everything he wanted: respect, legitimacy, and someone he can leverage as another “ally” in the event China becomes too overbearing; Putin probably gets the pipeline he wants without the fear of U.S./South Korean influence creating a risk to that pipeline; and 45* gets to crow that he accomplished something that Obama could not. His base will eat it up, without a care that the NK regime is brutal and cruel, because who cares about human rights if it creates angst for the “libtards.” And our “news” organizations have placed themselves in the position of cheerleaders for the Orange Cheeto, with little analysis likely of how we have aligned ourselves with yet another genocidal dictator. To say I’m disgusted would be an understatement.

    • It is beyond the pale.

[O]ur “news” organizations have placed themselves in the position of cheerleaders for the Orange Cheeto, with little analysis likely of how we have aligned ourselves with yet another genocidal dictator.

They are so desperate to believe that our country could not elect a complete idiot and a destroyer of democracy that they constantly pick through the horse manure looking for nuggets of normalcy. They will not find them – they don’t exist – but their unwillingness to declare the emperor unclothed will probably result in him being re-elected. Curse them.

      • Checking for Lin’s good morning and good night tweets has become a part of my self-care. I don’t know how he does it, but he always seems to find a way to say just what I need to hear at the start and end of my day. Thank you so much for sharing today’s tweet; I hadn’t seen it yet.

        • Yeah, this one….. I’ve read it several times, and it’s still bring a (happy) tear

  4. Good morning, 55 and mostly sunny in Bellingham. I have no plans for today and no desire to make any! So time for coffee, visiting with my sister, and being available for what ever happens next.

    Best wishes to all.

  5. Thread . ..

      • I think this is the candidate Diana wanted but I could not remember. The good news is that the incumbent Comstock did not crush her primary opposition which they say is a sign of weakness. Fingers crossed that we can flip the seat.

        • Yes, you are right, Jan. Wexton has an “F” rating from the NRA. She’s also serving as a senator in our state legislature. After what we’re seeing in Washington, I’ve had it with amateurs who want to go for the top prize without any training.

  6. Wednesday Meese
57 going up to a rainy 76 here in NY.

    • Dee, PR is another area that gets glossed over in “social studies.” (It was called history and geography when I was in school.) Just as we are never told of the inventions of women and black people, nor the part that black people played in building this country, nor about the oppression of Native Americans, so school children are never told about Puerto Rico and VI.

My copy of the coloring book of black entrepreneurs is on its way! This summer when my granddaughter, who likes to color, stays with me, I’ll see to it that we spend some time on black history.

  7. Good morning, meeses! Wednesday …

It is 66 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 77. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

Another Wisconsin state senate seat flipped red to blue – this one north of Green Bay that was a Trump+16 and had not had a Democratic senator since 1977. This is one of the seats that Scott Walker did not want to fill but which Eric Holder’s group sued to make him fill. Now we have an incumbent and someone to vote in special sessions. The state senate is the legislative body that we have the best chance of retaking in the fall – the distribution is 18R-15D and half the seats will be up for election this fall. If we hold our 15 and add 2 more, we will take the chamber and have a firewall against Walker if he should get re-elected. The Assembly seat we hoped to flip came up short but our candidate moved the district 8 points D. No word on whether or not she will try again in the fall.

Ex-governor Sanford will soon become ex-congressman Sanford and that should be a reminder to us all that the Republican Party is Trump’s party – and those who cross him will be primaried. There are 62 million people who voted for Trump and most of them would do it again in a heartbeat. We can’t let our disgust blind us to the fact that he is very popular with his base and those who don’t embrace him will be on the outs with their party. The good news is that Democrats and thoughtful independents outnumber Republicans so in a general election in swing districts and purple states where we get out the vote we have a pretty good chance of prevailing. Having SC-01 be an open seat moved it from Solid-R to Likely-R.

In Virginia the confederate won the Republican Senate primary so Virginians will have the opportunity to repudiate the politics of white supremacy this fall. I hope they bury Stewart in an avalanche of votes.

I am ignoring the North Korean summit news. When I heard Tom Cotton say it was okay to deal with North Korea because they already have weapons but not okay to deal with Iran because they did not have weapons yet, we officially went down the rabbit hole. I will let the Republicans duke it out among themselves. With the shitgibbon all-in on his “friendship” with Kim Jong-Un, the likelihood of war probably diminishes. And that is good news.

I have a ton of queued up projects that suffered while I had out of town company last week into Monday and took yesterday off to recover. Now I have to get organized in advance of being gone a few days. I plan to hit the ground running on Friday but a nap sounds better!

    See all y’all later!

  8. Good morning, Moosekind! The sky at 6 o’clock was covered with a blanket of soft gray cloud when I took Monty out for his “business” session. The sky is still cloudy and rain is in the forecast for the afternoon. Right now the temperature in Ashburn is 65 F., going up to 84 F. I’ve covered up the porch furniture and will try to get a walk before the deluge.

Good news from Wisconsin, Jan! Hey, is Scotty trying to be governor for life? How long are your gubernatorial terms in Wisconsin?

Well, Trump Lite won the Rethug nomination. He is so egregious I hope he will be easy to beat, but you never know. Look at what happened to the White House. I bet the Russians are already planning to get the Kluxer elected. To think Kaine could have been our Veep! Sigh.

Yesterday afternoon I saw the ex-precinct captain crossing the parking lot so I asked her about the turnout. She said it was about 50 percent and that more Dems voted than Rethugs. “We’re more motivated,” I replied. It may have been only 50 percent, but I had to stand in line for 15 minutes, which I took as an encouraging sign.

Feeling deeply disgusted by the tongue bath the media is giving Thing for the Singapore Summit. Feeling sick at my stomach after an op-ed I read in yesterday’s Washington Poop about population control in China. Oh…my…there can’t be any such thing as this god that people worship. The awfulness of what I read is such that I cannot talk about it.

Well…time to get on with our day! Hope it’s a good one for all. I guess bfitz will be waiting for her charger for a day or two. Hope the replacement will come sooner rather than later.

    • No term limits in Wisconsin! Tommy Thompson was governor for about 80 years and would still be governor if Bush the Lesser had not tapped him for HHS in 2001. We are hoping the wave year will wash Walker away but we have a LOT of Koch money here – we were the test case for unlimited money in politics and that $ advantage is going to be difficult to overcome. The fact that the people in Assembly District 42 were only mildly nauseated by complete Republican control of our state government is not a good sign. Barack Obama’s group OFA has targeted Wisconsin – governor and state legislature – so we will have reinforcements. It all depends on who we nominate; we have lots of options each with their own strengths but no one who is emerging as The Candidate.

  9. I’m staying home from work today, my stomach woke me up 3 times last night. Also, at the end of the month we are changing to a new computer system, and in the near future getting “upgraded” from Windows 365 (which we just got not even a year ago) to Windows 10 and new phones that somehow tie in to our computers. Oh, and we’re getting double computer screens because something about our new system….. Anyway, there’s a lot of stress in the immediate future, I thought I’d take a sick day while it’s less important. Today, I’m gonna clean house, do laundry & take a nap. Here’s another song from the Apollo show with that amazing horn section (I am so not an evangelical, but they had me doing the raised hand thing, because She was definitely in the building): When Love Comes To Town.

  10. more lovely words from Lin-Manuel:

  11. Good morning meese. 64 with projected high of 98 today, and hopefully a bit cooler this weekend (one of the predicted highs is 79 on Saturday, yay?!?!?!)

Last minute cleaning, “packing” and bed assembling before my sister comes tomorrow. There are no more “tomorrows” to delay the work!! Will be traveling with her to various places including upstate NY (Poughkeepsie).

  12. Good morning, 57 and raining in Bellingham. Another quiet morning and my house feels very peaceful so I’m ignoring the news. Time to find some coffee.

    Best wishes to all.

  13. Good afternoon, Meesefolk. Another lovely Michigan day; up to 81 today and a mix of sun and clouds.

I noticed yesterday that my senators weren’t listed as co-sponsors of Sen. Feinstein’s Keep Families Together Act, so I called them today to find out why not. The aides were uncertain but thought neither was yet a co-sponsor, but neither could explain why not. Both of my senators are opposed to family separation, but they’re being too damn silent on the issue. I told the aides that my minimum expectation was that they co-sponsor Feinstein’s bill, but more than that, I wanted to hear more than measured, polite words from them about this evil. I’m far more tolerant of weasel words and diplomatic phrasing than most, but this time, it’s not working for me. I want to hear some outrage and feel their anger…because if they’re not angry about this, then their souls have been shriveled by political gamesmanship, and they need to get out of the game. I didn’t say all of that, but I did let some of my outrage fly.

    • Every Senator should sign on to the bill and those who don’t expose their shriveled souls. Sometimes you have to put your neck out for a principle – not allowing taking babies from their mothers should be an easy call.

  14. I somehow got logged out this morning, and it took about a million tries to successfully reset my password. But every time I click on ly profile to set it to something I’ll remember, it boots me back out. What am I doing wrong?

    • ok, never mind, I’m in & changed my password, so I guess all is well

    • Glad it got sorted out! I saw 5 password change attempts and wondered what was up. Cookies and cache are a free-for-all and sometimes the wrong codes survive and wreak havoc.

  15. Thursday Meese
63 here in NY going up to 79

    Politics in my state

In NY Cuomo is crushing Sex in the City Nixon, the “Their Revolution” candidate for Gov in NY is doing poorly in the polls

Also…perhaps she should not have done this:

There are plenty things wrong with Cuomo – PR is not one of them. Suggesting pot shops in black neighborhoods would be “reparations” was pretty dumb too.

Hubby and I are voting for Cuomo. Guess that makes us both shills..yadda yadda

    • I really want this notion of celebrity candidates to be put to rest. As much as professional politicians get derided, I want people who know how government works – and who understand the implications of policy decisions – to be administering our governments, state and federal. And this idea of building a “movement” on the left that excludes people of color is insane. TheirRevolution is revolting.

      • Being a politician is a job – with a skill set.
Running a state – especially a state like NY which has an economy larger than most countries in the world -it is not a job for a novice.

  16. Good morning, meeses! Thursday …

It is 57 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 77. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

Travel and meetings kept me off the Internets most of the day yesterday and I have another day of that ahead of me (this time meetings and then travel). I did have my email with me and was thankful to not have a dozen Breaking News “The Shitgibbon Said/Did …” emails in my Inbox.

It looks like the RSCC will not endorse the confederate guy in Virginia. They are so funny – they pretend to care about keeping Nazis and KKK out of their party but embrace trumpism for its electoral power. This is the same devils bargain the Republicans made in 1968 to elect Nixon and 1980 to elect Reagan and white supremacists will always be a big part of their base. That they let the deplorables fly their freak flags – scaring away college educated white people – will lead to their demise. The bargain was that they wouldn’t say the quiet parts out loud!

    See all y’all later!

  17. Good morning, Meese! It’s a beautiful Thor’s Day here, with a few wispy white clouds stretching across the blue and sunlight falling on the woods. It never did rain yesterday, despite looking threatening on and off. I’ll have to really water those plants on the screened porch.

Not much to say except that my eyes hurt and my weight is ballooning. Been trying to cut back and walk more, to no avail. It might be time for the grapefruit diet again.

Wondering whether something big will happen with The Hatchet Man this week—I do hope so!

Wishing a nice, quiet day to all at the Pond and beyond.

  18. Second-hottest June so far, following the tied-for-hottest May ever. But yeah, climate change is a myth. Oatmeal, tea. Last night I went to a fundraiser for a mayoral candidate. I’m not sure who I support, just wanted to see what’s up. I got an e-mail saying I could get in free, and there was food, so: free dinner & finding out what’s up in mayor & city council stuff. There’s a revision to the development code that people are quite angry about, and from what I heard last night, it was done stupidly (like they didn’t include the staff/committee who work on drainage issues — in the new draft of the development code — in a city known for having terrible flash floods)

Here’s more from the Apollo show: Desire

  19. Good morning, 54 and cloudy in Bellingham. My sister goes to Oregon via Amtrak today so we’re drinking coffee and visiting. It’s a comfortable train ride, much of it along the coast so I hope she gets window seat. It’s been a busy week of family time!

    Best wishes to all.
