Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: Jan. 13th through Jan. 19th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Good morning meese. 53 with high of 54, I think. Supposed to still be cloudy and possibly raining, which is good but doesn’t really help my cold.

  2. Friday Meese.
Getting prepared to get hit by a whopper winter storm. Snow starts here this evening. Big problem is a lot of the storm will be ice.

    • I am so glad the Republicans decided to take the filters off because exposing their out-and-out racism is going to make it easier for us to make the case that they are deplorable. The Pew Survey on Gen Z shows that their attitudes towards race will start affecting them in even their tightly gerrymandered districts as the children of their fellow haters begin rejecting them:

When it comes to views on race, the two younger generations are more likely than older generations to say that blacks are treated less fairly than whites in the United States today. And they are much more likely than their elders to approve of NFL players kneeling during the national anthem as a sign of protest. The younger generations are also more accepting of some of the ways in which American society is changing. Majorities among Gen Z and the Millennial generation say increasing racial and ethnic diversity in the U.S. is a good thing for society, while older generations are less convinced of this. And they’re more likely to have a positive view of interracial and same-sex marriage than their older counterparts.

As a recent Pew Research Center report highlighted, Gen Z is the most racially and ethnically diverse generation we have seen, but this isn’t all that’s driving the attitudes of this generation when it comes to issues surrounding race and diversity. There are significant, if more modest, generational differences on these issues even among non-Hispanic whites.

The whites in my daughter’s generation are more likely to have non-white friends and classmates because there are simply more of them. With that comes outrage when they see inequality and racism and bad behaviour. If we can survive the Trump years, we have hope for a better future.

  3. Good morning, meese! Friday …

It is 19 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 21. There is a winter storm on its way that is expected to dump 2 to 6 inches of snow tonight and tomorrow. I have a short trip to make this morning and expect to get back before the flakes start flying. Fingers crossed!

Part of me is screaming at Washington DC “do anything to make it stop!” and the other part knows that if the Democrats give in to the extortion demands of Individual 1 and his nihilistic political party that the shutdown weapon will simply be used over and over and over again. We can’t live that way. Fund the government – then talk about border security – is the only way forward. I keep hoping that airline pilots will strike because it seems like the only impact of the shutdown that the media is bothered by (and which therefore gets their attention and pixels) is air travel. They don’t care about people who are about to become homeless, people who can’t afford co-pays on lifesaving medications, students who can’t pay tuition and will not be able to start school next week, people who can’t close on their homes, small businesses waiting for loans, and federal workers who don’t even have money to pay for transportation to the jobs they are forced to do. Mitch McConnell has made it clear that he won’t bring up any bill that won’t be signed by his short-fingered master so the end of the shutdown has only one solution – Donald Trump calling an end to it. And McConnell is actually right – he will never have the votes to override a presidential veto (and probably the House doesn’t either, we don’t have a veto proof majority). Until right-wing talkers decide that this game of chicken is hurting them personally – and they release tRump from his border wall pledge – there will be no break. Heck of a way to run a country.

Good news! Pew just did a survey of the upcoming Generation Z that the right-wing believes will be solidly Republican. Er, not so much. They are actually even more inclusive than millennials and believe strongly that government has a role in making peoples lives better.

By the way, the first wave of Gen Z, which includes my daughter and her friends, voted in large numbers in 2018 – expect more of them in 2020.

    See all y’all later!

    • yep, this:

Part of me is screaming at Washington DC “do anything to make it stop!” and the other part knows that if the Democrats give in to the extortion demands of Individual 1 and his nihilistic political party that the shutdown weapon will simply be used over and over and over again.

If you give in to the 3 year old’s tantrums, they will be much worse when he’s 4, then 5….

      • Exactly – any parent will tell you that.

I hope we don’t have to worry about a 5th year of tRump tantrums – we really need to end this on January 20, 2021.

  4. Dense fog again, but today’s supposed to be springlike — 78 degrees. Cold front this weekend, though. Will cover the plants Saturday afternoon. I wonder how many ways Republicans will find today to say that suborning perjury is perfectly fine. And that story has bumped the “POTUS puts the Speaker of the House in danger” story down from the headlines. Sigh. Eating my overnight oats & drinking my nice supercold tea (I stick in in the freezer for an hour so it’s just this side of icy).

Today seems like a good day for Nina Cried Power. It’s not the wakin’, it’s the risin’.

  5. Good Friday morning, Moosekind! Still, white and silent are the watchwords in NoVa. We had a couple more inches of snow during the night, so once more the woods look as if they’re covered with powdered sugar. It began shortly after five, when I was walking to pick up dinner from the carryout place across the parking lot.

Feeling cross this morning because of no tea. Not allowed anything to eat or drink before the lab test, which will be in 45 minutes. Hope eating all that oatmeal has paid off.

Day after day there is some egregious violation of presidential and political norms on the part of Thing. I simply can’t think what will end this impasse. In the meantime, back in the streets, the antichoicers will be marching today.

Our four-year-old grandson may be joining us this afternoon for the sleepover he missed last week. I’ll have to tidy up this place!

Wishing a good day to all Meese. Jan and Denise, hope you will have everything you need before it snows.

  6. It’s 38 feels like 29 and sunny. For the latter I am very thankful. I can’t get the fire going – not just the wood but the kindling won’t catch and apparently the paper under the kindling won’t either – so smoke in the house and a lot of cussing. The laundry is almost done. I need to have the fire actually going before I hang the laundry in front of it. Sigh. Yesterday’s generation was 2.35 KWHs bringing the m-t-d to 72. If we get this sunshine all day (as in the front & clouds don’t move in until after dark) we might make it to 80. At this point & with the forecasts we’ve got I’m afraid we’ll be lucky to make it over 140, much less the 180 that’s about my monthly usage. Life is what it is. We’ll deal.

    The dominant culture – white supremacist, male supremacist – is one of short-sighted greed. I’m not sure there’s anything more stupid. Whether we’re talking drilling in the arctic (or deep water), blowing up sides of mountains to put in ski lifts in avalanche country, taking food from people who will never be “productive citizens” without it, overpumping aquifers… Just stupid. People die. Of course the ones ordering these evils are seldom the ones hurt or dying. Not having the ability to plan beyond “I want it, it’s mine” and killing whoever says differently is the hallmark of our “civilization” – and only people this sociopathic, short-sighted, and uncivilized would boast of their culture and destroy other people’s cultures in the name of it. It is so very systemic I haven’t a clue how we can stop it. We can make things better by electing Dems, but how the hell we’re ever gonna get to “good” I do not know. So I Channel Healing Energy and leave it up to the Universe – and do what my hand finds to do. Like hanging up the laundry. Healing Energy to everybody everywhere shaped to their needs. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  7. Good morning, 48 and cloudy at Deer Harbor. Yesterday was a quiet day, but today today I hope to go to the beach. PNW beaches are rocky and chilly but with my warm coat and trusty walking stick I should be ok. We return to Bellingham tomorrow.

    Best wishes to all.

  8. Good morning, Meesefolk; 28 when I got up with an expected cloudy high of 30. We’re not going to get the worst of the winter storm moving in; we’re far enough north that we’ll probably only get 2-3″ of snow. I’d prefer more, but it’s enough that I have to remember to go get the shovel out of the carriage house tonight.

I usually leave the music sharing to anotherdemocrat, but this was a fun piece, orginally from 1926 or thereabouts, that The Kiddo shared with me this morning. (To say she has far-ranging, eclectic tastes in music would be an understatement.) German cabaret music isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but the lyrics certainly capture a mood:

Raus mit den Männern! (Chuck out the men! translation)
The battle for emancipation’s been raging since history began
Yes, feminists of every nation want to chuck off the chains made by man
Hula girls and housemaids and wives in Maribou
hear all our voices thunder in protest
Anything that men do women can do too
and more that that we women do it best

CHORUS: Chuck all the men out of the Reichstag
and chuck all the men out of the courthouse
Men are the problem with humanity
    they’re blinded by their vanity
    Women have passively embraced them
when we could have easily outpaced them
Yes we should have long ago replaced them
    or better yet erased them
If we haven’t made our feelings clear
we women have had it up to here

As babies men all howl and bluster they cry through the night and the day
perfecting the techniques they’ll muster for the times when they don’t get their way
Nursie holds the monster and feeds him from her breast
and baby is contented for a bit
But when he sees his nurse is trying to get some rest
the little man decides to have a fit

    CHORUS

The men get their pick of professions they’re policemen or scholars or clerks
They get rich and acquire possessions like we wives who keep house for these jerks
They’re ruining the country while we mop up the floor
They’re flushing this whole nation down the drain
Sisters stand together, let’s show these men the door
before they drive us totally insane

    CHORUS

Good day to and for all!

    • I really like that song, DoReMI, and it expresses sentiments I’ve frequently harbored.

But I’d find a world without men as vanilla as…I don’t know, Italian cooking without tomatoes and garlic. I’ve had enough experience with Italian cooking to know there’s more to it than those particular ingredients, but those two play a major role in many dishes.

I’d like a world in which men and women are equal. If men just didn’t have this “if you’re equal, that means I lose” mentality! Remember the carefully controlled experiments in which a teacher called on girls an equal number of times compared to the boys? The boys’ perception was that girls were called on much more frequently than they were! Faugh.

  9. Saturday Meese. 30 degrees here in Saugerties NY. The winter storm warning says we will start getting hit at about 4 o’clock this afternoon. I just checked outside and it looks like we had a little snow overnight. Have to wait till sunrise to see more.

    Disgusted with all things Trump.

    • I generally don’t retweet Rolling Stones articles (and I was sad when Jamil Smith started writing there because I liked his writing) but that article has a great headline and needs more eyes so I retweeted it. The focus needs to stay on the terrible treatment received by Puerto Rico by the racist president* and his white supremacist government.

I am glad that Kelly is getting more exposure as the literal piece of crap that he is – it was obvious to anyone with a brain after he trashed the Gold Star widow and her friend, the Congresswoman from Florida, that he is a racist and that his handpicked DHS Secretary Nielsen is one as well. This administration and all of its enablers deserve to be vilified. We can’t allow the rewrite of history that the press is doing to George W. Bush and Dick “Dick” Cheney happen to the Trump years. We need to bear witness and pound it into the heads of successive generations to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

  10. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

It is 10 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 18. The airport reports 5.8 inches of snow yesterday before midnight. The forecast calls for light flurries ending this afternoon. I do not have to go anywhere – yay!

I am as excited as the next person to have something terrible reported about Individual 1 but, yikes, we need to take a deep breath before we leap on a 5-minute old bandwagon that may not have wheels. Grabbing a news reports as “this is the smoking gun – IMPEACH!” plays right into tRumps’s hands: fake news, Trump derangement syndrome, the whole ball of wax. First, it is a news report, not a court filing or a government report. Second, even if there is video evidence of Trump talking to Putin and agreeing to destroy America for cash to keep Trump companies afloat THE REPUBLICAN SENATE WILL NOT REMOVE HIM. They won’t – really – there is nothing he can do that will lead them to that because his base will destroy anyone who votes to remove him. We need to get rid of Trump the old fashioned way, vote him out of office and lash every Senate Republican up for re-election to him and vote them out of office also.

Today apparently there will be an “announcement” from the crime boss that the Republicans installed in the Oval Office. Rumors are that it will be offering something to Democrats in exchange for ending the shutdown. First, why is this not being done by negotiators? Very likely because it is something that has already been offered and rejected. Second, why on earth would anyone believe that something said in front of TV cameras is any more likely to be turned into actual policy than anything that has been said already? Trump said he would sign the CR – he changed his mind after it passed the Senate. No matter what he says, there is no guarantee that it will eventually be signed after his right-wing talk show masters all weigh in. Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer will not agree to any extortion demands – shutdown ends first with a signed bill, then negotiations on the border wall. Period.

Senator Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota delivered the Democratic Party Weekly Address and her topic is the shutdown. I will put the Fighting Back together shortly and post it.

    See all y’all later!

  11. Good morning, Meesefolk; 19 now with a high of 21 expected. The odd, very narrow temperature range continues, with the addition of snow today. We’ve gotten a little more than an inch already; I’m not sure we’ll get the additional two to make the high end of the predicted total.

The dogs and Hubby decided to form a Choir of Snoring this morning, so my day is started early. I’m not planning to do much beyond laundry and maybe some baking today, so I may add in a nap later…by myself, sans the musical stylings of the Buzz Saw Trio.

Speaking of buzz, I’m glad I was busy enough yesterday to avoid the premature Buzzfeed celebrations. I caught up on the “news” a bit last night, but I didn’t see it making a huge difference, for precisely the reasons Jan mentioned. Forty-two senators were fine with dropping sanctions; why would an unlawful act by the *Resident matter to them?

Time for coffee~~good day to and for all.

  12. Up & watching the news. My stomach is really upset, and I have a headache, so I’m being cautious about eating. But my eye vitamins say to take with food, so I have to try. I’m not going to do much today, unless I start feeling better. But I think the headache is at least partly due to dehydration, so I’m going to try to drink some water.

    • {{{ad}}} – Healing Energy – hope the upset tummy gets better soon. Practically all healing requires the nutrients to do the repair work get through the digestive system. Definitely drink water – in the cooler weather it’s easy to forget how much of it we still need. moar Healing Energy, moar {{{HUGS}}}

      • I keep drifting back to sleep. I’ve gotten a whole 1/4 of a liter drunk. I’ll just keep taking sips every time I wake up, Definitely not making the march here – sponsored by Planned Parenthood, so I hate to miss it. But I’m not sure I could even walk to my car. Ok, time to try to eat a 3rd cracker with cheese. And more water.

        • Sleep is good. If you’re holding down the cheese along with the cracker, you’re getting better. moar {{{HUGS}}} moar Healing Energy

  13. Meeses, I should have time to do the WordPress upgrade to 5.0.3 this weekend. My plan is to do it early tomorrow (Sunday) morning so that the weekly backup will have already been done, saving me a step. I had decided to wait after I realized that 5.0.3 was only a week old and that my schedule was a little tight and I wouldn’t have time to back it out if it failed.

If the site is not available tomorrow morning for whatever reason, check the @motleymoose Twitter feed. I will have the Moose post updates there.

  14. Good morning, Moosekind! I’m looking out at grey, misty woods under an overcast sky. Lousy weather is supposed to start this afternoon. I have to do an errand before then so must make haste while the roads are still drivable. I canceled my lunch date for tomorrow as I’m afraid the roads will turn into an ice rink—that is, if the weather forecast is to be believed. Currently it’s 34 F., going up to 40 F. later.

Hoping to stay in for the rest of the day and get some work done. I’ve decided on a plan of action for Chapter 19. Map it out as if it were an algebra problem, then fill in the blanks. Kashmir is still my location of choice. Learned to my intense amazement that the only way to get into it is over the mountains or by air. The fact that it’s supposed to be the loveliest country on earth is a significant factor in the attraction I feel toward it.

However, that’s a matter of interest only to me! Like everyone else, I’ll keep an ear out for the reality show from La Casa Blanca to find out the identity of this week’s YUGE winner! Did you see how Madame Speaker trolled him yesterday? “I don’t believe the President would do anything that petty, do you?” OMG, no wonder “President Pelosi” was trending on Twitter yesterday!

Will search for the Moose Pond on Twitter so I can keep up. Wishing all a pleasant Saturday!

  15. It’s 24 feels like 14 and I seriously doubt I’m going to get any generation at all today as there’s about an inch of snow on the panels. sigh. Yesterday was a good production day. We got 8.2 KWHs and the m-t-d is 81 – however…sigh. I also, finally, got some good firewood. My friend has had a tree down in her backyard from a windstorm last year. Everybody who promised to deal with it no-showed. Well, my wood guy was happy to cut it up and split it since I was gonna buy it and he was only gonna have to transport it across the street. It’s seasoned white oak. So I can mixed that with the green stuff and the almost rotten stuff – and stop cursing the wood for not catching/using up all my kindling. LOL.

I managed to nab 2 of the 3 little black kittehs and put them on the porch but the more feral (not really feral – he did let me pick him up although I doubt he’ll let me get that close again) of the two had fits about it so I let him out again. I’ve not only wrapped his box in plastic so it stayed mostly dry even after the heavy rain early this morning but this morning I’ve put a Styrofoam panel on the bottom and a dry couple of layers of cardboard on top of the Styrofoam. He seems to really like his box. The one on the porch is getting fussy though. He’s not used to being indoors. I may have to let him out soon. I wish I could find his littermate and get that one inside as well. I think they’d be OK if they were together. And I’m worried about the one I can’t find. Of course it’s still snowing and he may have his own holing up place. I hope.

I’m worried as hell about my online family as well as blood kin. Actually more for the online family. Most of my blood kin are managing. Maybe not an “elegant” sufficiency, but a sufficiency none the less and that’s for the ones struggling the most. Worried about my country too of course and how much it’s gonna take to recover from the damage being done, damage we can point out and complain about but cannot stop until we get more power in govt. Power that the folks powerful enough to install #45 are seriously going to try to keep us from getting. Step by step, one foot in front of the other – right now it’s not even “eyes on the prize” it’s “eyes on the path” so we don’t lose our footing and go over the cliff. But just like Barbara Jordan, “my faith in the Constitution is whole, it is complete…” and so I have faith we will get out of this and rebuild on the foundation of that Constitution. Meanwhile I do what I can and Channel Energy.

    So. Coffee and “Fighting Back” and tend the fire & kittehs. Healing Energy to everybody everywhere shaped to their needs. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}
