Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: Feb. 17th through Feb. 23rd

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

Morning low of 19 degrees in Madison WI with an expected daytime high of 25. Snow is in the forecast.

Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Sunday Meese. 17 degrees here in NYS going up to 36.

I missed reporting in Saturday – was caught up in twitter madness churned by the new black birther movement called “ADOS”
Was told to STFU because I’m not black :)

    Push back ensued.

Wrote about refusing to honor George Washington for today’s Sunday sermon.

    • Great post, Dee (I should probably add, “as usual”!) The comments, also as usual, had a disturbing number of “but that was then, this is now…” comments. WTF?!

  3. Good morning, Moosekind! Breakfast has been had, coffee is being drunk. Jan, I bet you’re sick of winter! Dee, saw you pushing back on Twitter. Will read your post right after I read Jan’s “Fighting Back” post.

Cut my little finger yesterday while preparing the stew, so if I type something weird instead of the letter “a,” pray overlook it.

It started off sunny here in Ashburn, but now it’s partly cloudy. The current temperature is 30 F., going up to 40 F. with what the weather guys refer to as a “wintery” mix possible by 6 p.m. (No weather person can pronounce the word “wintry”: after all, why utter two syllables when you can utter three?)

Have concluded that my sleep pattern is pre-Industrial Revolution. I sleep from 11 to 1, get up and read (a book, not a device) for 2 hours, then go back to bed. I’ve read that sleeping a straight 8 is for the convenience of the employer, as is eating three meals a day at set times rather than whenever one feels like it.

Can’t say much more with a typing finger out of commission, so will wish everyone a nice, quiet Sunday.

  4. Up & watching the news. Will have to figure out a route to church because of the marathon. Besides church, there’s groceries & housework. Will be nice to sleep in again tomorrow. No particular reason for posting Wild Horses, just that I love this song:

    What are you holding back?
I know you’ve wild horses enough inside of you

Now’s not the time to learn,

serenity, it’s gone to red from blue

    • Read & tweeted. Wish I could r,r,t,c – doubly wish I could help with the pushback on the derailers. Cognitive dissonance started me looking at what I was taught (and finding it to be 99% lies with a nugget or two of basic fact, very basic fact – like “Washington was our 1st president” level of fact). For which I thank my mother. She always told us “don’t argue about discernable facts, discern them.” The derailers seem to prefer denying the dissonance and insisting on truthiness as a way to deal with it.

The odds are very good that some of my ancestors owned slaves. Especially Robert Small who came to this continent in 1774, fought in the Revolution, and was “paid” with land in the Carolinas. But whether they did or didn’t I still have had the benefit of being white in a white-is-human/black-is-not society. & Aji’s comment about “all your faves are problematic” is so very true. Especially about “founding fathers”.

  5. Great post, Dee (I should probably add, “as usual”!) The comments, also as usual, had a disturbing number of “but that was then, this is now…” comments. WTF?!

    • The trolling – and people saying “get over it” and the uncritical hero worship of some of the comments – was depressing. Got up this morning and answered some more.
There are currently over 900 comments – and they are still coming in

      I guess I really struck a nerve.

  6. It seems to be 26 windchill 13 and overcast. sigh. We got 6.4 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d is 112. I seriously hope we get the projected sunshine this afternoon. Both for my electricity production and my mood. The more little hints of Spring coming the less tolerant I seem to be of cloudiness. Oh well. We shall see what we shall see. Meanwhile I’ve done my Sunday cleaning/tidying and baked muffins. I need to make soup. I’m out of stock but I think the refried bean-Spanish rice soup will work if I use a second can of diced tomatoes in lieu of it. That’s another thing we shall see what we shall see.

Holding the Good Thought for a whole slew of folks (that I know – also for the nation & a lot of folks I don’t know, of course, but that’s less focused) but seriously especially for Aji. The biopsy is tomorrow. The mass is gonna have to be removed no matter what but prayers/Good Vibes/Healing Energy/Whatever that the thing be benign. Which are getting into the pleasepleaseplease category at this point. Ijits yesterday tried to attack Dee on her blackness. LOL. I suggested they check her bio – goddess knows it’s easy to do, just hover over her name – but they were too attached to their own bot-driven memes to even do that. As to googling anything, not likely. Those pesky facts keep interfering with their one-true-faith so they most certainly aren’t going to believe them much less go look for them.

    Of the 3 little black kitties I’m feeding, one really likes to be petted. In fact s/he periodically (like now) scritches on the back door for me to come out and do just that. Which is totally weird and took me a while to figure out. The weather is not encouraging for that sort of thing so I only do it when I’m putting out food and outside anyway. Which comes up again as soon as I finish checking in. After I feed kitties indoors & out – and get coffee and muffin for myself – I’ll head over to DK and read (finish reading, I’m half-way through) Dee’s Sunday post. I wonder what the world would be like if white male supremacy never happened. We most certainly wouldn’t be facing potential extinction from global warming. Would nations even exist at all? That’s not necessarily bad and in fact might be the best of all worlds. Oh well. Not a path we were given to walk. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  7. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

It is 18 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 21. Clear skies are in the forecast while we wait for the next winter storm on Wednesday. Officially we had 5.4 inches of snow yesterday which was a record for the day. We had more between midnight and 3am and some blowing and drifting; I am hearing plows at work right now.

A quick scan of the news reminds me of what a mess the Republicans made of Constitutional government during their two years of control. Ron Freaking Johnson, dumbest man in the Senate, is already re-writing history saying that Republicans did not have control of Congress. He is a walking talking (drooling?) billboard for why you do not run rematches and retreads – a fresher face with no baggage might have beaten Johnson in 2016 but now we have that literal pile of excrement “representing” us until 2022. :(

Twitter is saying that the (even more) unhinged rantings of the dotard in the Oval Office suggest that another shoe is dropping in the Mueller case. I guess we will have to see what William Barr does when Trump asks him to end the investigation (my money is on that he complies). I hope Mueller has passed off enough evidence to the states to lock up a bunch of Trumps for a very long time. Maybe they can’t touch Donald Trump but if they can destroy his company and imprison his family, that would hold us for a while.

I am going to observe the holiday and not do any project work so that I can get some accounting work done. I am still waiting for tax forms to be finalized so I can complete my business taxes and hope they get released soon so I can wrap up 2018. It is a relief that the federal government is open – I hope that they don’t take too long to process returns, I have already decided how to spend my refund!

    See all y’all later!

  8. Monday Meese.

27 here in NYS – it snowed last night and now we have rain in the forecast.

  9. Good morning, Meese! Cloudy here in Ashburn today, with a current temp. of 35 F., going up to 44 F. We’re expecting Something on Wednesday but today seems okay. Yesterday’s “wintery” mix devolved into just rain.

Miss Pink Cheeks stayed the night with us, which meant I had to prepare a cooked breakfast this morning. It was okay, because she and Grandpa demolished the Canadian bacon and regular bacon that had nearly expired.

Busy day—grocery shopping, then I’m meeting with a woman and her daughter at Starbucks. The daughter, who was 17 on Saturday, has neither siblings nor grandparents, so I’m auditioning for the role of Grandma. Sometimes kids need to talk to an adult who isn’t a parent.

Also have a few writing chores to do. May I just say that I loved Dee’s post about President’s Day? I feel like a person who can see after having cataracts removed. It’s liberating to leave the lies I was taught in school behind, just as it was liberating to abandon patriarchal religion with its dreary dictum that humans are worthless and women are evil.

Wishing all at the Pond a good day.

  10. Slept in, watching Stargate Atlantis, because the news is…… well, the news. Today: thawing out the lunch I have in the freezer, laundry, and maybe today for that walk.

  11. Good morning, Meesefolk; 19 when I got up with an expected high of 23, but SUNNY so who cares what the temperature is! Somehow I missed all the snow that accumulated yesterday. I saw coming down, but it was pretty and fluffy and didn’t seem like that much…until I walked outside this morning and realized I should have been shoveling last night. I guess I know what I’m doing when I get home from work tonight, but at least the schools are closed for mid-winter break so it won’t be totally compacted by the walkers.

The only things new that I learned this weekend are that Dee isn’t black/black enough, and our presidents are saints, so just hush. Oh, and that we can stage supplies for “humanitarian aid” to Venezuela, but not Puerto Rico. And that Hillary didn’t go to WI enough, and that’s why she lost the state. OK, so that last one isn’t new, but it’s rearing it’s head again with Sen. Klobuchar’s campaigning in the Midwest. Damn, Jan, it’s such a shame that WI voters are so tender and sensitive and prone to tantrums… ;)

Good day to and for all!

    • Wisconsin’s problem was that their young people bought the bill of goods the berners sold – that if they voted for Jill Stein or stayed home in a purity rage that would be better than voting for someone who once earned a fee speaking to Wall Street firms and sent emails from her private server. I know that high schools teach civics and in fact Wisconsin’s high school seniors have to take a test as part of their graduation requirements. I would like to see a question in there about how the two-party system works. Clearly the cohort that came of age in 2016 had no idea. I am also peeved at the berners for not caring about downticket races when their god is on the ballot. We lost the chance at a Supreme Court seat and let the Republicans elect Ron Freaking Johnson for another 6 years. :(

  12. Seems to be 19 but hopefully heading for 39 which will at least thaw the cats’ water. I poured boiling water over it this morning and the shyest of the 3 immediately started drinking. The littermates on the other hand dodged inside the minute I opened the door. They checked out the kitchen and den, drank from the indoor cats’ water dish, discovered the catnip pads (little stoners is what they are), and learned that older kitties do not like their butts sniffed. I hated to put them out again in the cold but…at least it’s sunny. We got 12.3 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d is 124. I haven’t a clue where we’ll end up but 200 for the month is still quite possible – if we keep getting this kind of sunshine. We shall see what we shall see.

Dee’s diary is probably the best way to “spend” Presidents Day – I’m not sure how many of the post-1965 presidents would have owned slaves if they’d had the chance but I’m afraid there definitely were some. Even not counting #45 who certainly would. White supremacist men (and women) have done things for their own benefit that later generations were able to expand out to other races/genders/cultures. Although I don’t believe in that particular god, sometimes a good comment comes out of his book – “you meant it for evil but god meant it for good” comes to mind when dealing with our Founders. Meanwhile if the weather permits them to get to Santa Fe, Aji’s got that biopsy today. It’s not possible for the news to be good so praying mightily for “less bad” – benign and fairly simple to remove/treat. She will have most of my “Energy” this day.

    I need to get back to work. Also more coffee. & probably some Ibu – barometric changes overnight gave me a skullbanger that hasn’t gone away but Ibu and caffeine usually takes care of it. Healing/Making Things Better Energy to everybody everywhere for your shaping to your needs. Bright the Day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  13. Good morning, 30 and cloudy in Bellingham. I missed yesterday’s check in thanks to needing to be at our son’s house for brunch at what should be a manageable early hour but wasn’t! I did manage to make myself presentable, get the blueberry/lemon muffins baked, and arrived nearly on time, but it was a push. Regardless we enjoyed a lovely family morning together and then napped the afternoon away.

I’ve got big plans for cutting some projects in my sewing room today so I’d best get busy before I lose my focus and wander away :)

    Best wishes to all.

  15. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

It is -4 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 25. Sunny skies are in the forecast with snow starting this evening and overnight. That probably means I will not get to see the full moon but I did see a full-ish moon last night.

I just got a breaking news email slither across my screen that Bernie Sanders has announced that he will be running for president. The DNC is so freaking stupid for giving non-Democrats – and people who HATE the party! – access to their nominating process; they deserve to be despised and will never get a penny from me. The field up until now has been pretty cordial but now that Mr. Scorched Earth is in the race, it will quickly turn ugly. I hope he berns out in 2019 and we end up with just the serious candidates when people start paying attention next January. A person who is running a 1956 campaign – where people of color don’t have the franchise and he feels he just has to split the white vote with the Republican – has no hope of winning against Trump.

    See all y’all later!

  16. Good Tuesday Meese

Got up weary – it’s 10 degrees here, going up to 32. Weary because I still have bigots coming into Sunday’s diary on slaveowning Presidents

ARGH! Some of the crap makes me holla

Plus now what you tweet can be dragged over there – plus the Franken based attacks – continue.

    Puerto Rico

    • Oh, Sis, I’m sorry you’re so weary and that people are still behaving badly about your diary. I thought it was wonderful, and not only that, unforgettable.

Hope you can catch up on your rest.

    • Haters gonna hate. Those folks are why I’m not sure I’d go back even if the Admins asked me to. Which is about as likely as #45 becoming Decent about anything. But yeah, it’s gotta be exhausting to deal with them day after day after day. {{{HUGS}}}

  17. When I left work Friday, it was 20 degrees above normal. Today, it won’t get out of the 40s. Such an ongoing flood of news — I hope the judge doesn’t buy Stone’s “apology” for posting that picture. Playing happy, energetic Heal Me, to give me energy this Tues/Monday.

  18. Good morning, Moosekind! Sunny and very cold this morning, 26 F. at the moment, even at 8:30 a.m. Snow is expected tomorrow, then freezing rain to ice the snow, then regular rain. Miss Pink Cheeks already had yesterday off for Prez-dints’ day, now she’ll have tomorrow off too, no doubt. These schoolchildren seem to be off more than they’re on. No wonder school lasts well into June in this neck of the woods!

Had a marvelous night’s sleep without drugs—hurray! Going to get started on numerous writing chores this morning. Saw where Saint Bernard of No Accomplishments “announced.” Hope he gets even less traction than Schultz.

Wishing all at the Pond a nice quiet day.

    • And he begins his campaign by attacking LGBT, women, and people of color. This time he can’t run as the Not Hillary and he won’t have that “demographic” to himself.

      • I can’t even. And the usual suspects at GOS are already starting up again too. I will never understand the appeal…

        • Some of my peeps who still go to the GOS said there was quite a scene! It was bad enough on Twitter.

  19. Good morning meese. I have been scarce for a while as I’m trying to hopefully wrap up things at work before going to Seattle this Friday. I will be catching up with friends and also attending a remembrance/Gathering for my piano teacher. I hope I can play the piece I am going to without getting too nervous.

33 with a high of 54, and as far as I know no more major storms for a while. The water pack is doing well, and anecdotally I can see a lot more green everywhere.

    • {{{basket}}} – good luck in wrapping things up, safe travels. Wear your cuffs and you’ll be fine. ????????????

      Wonderful for the water pack doing well. Folks who pay attention – like seeing green everywhere – know climate change is real. (Around here not only are the crocuses up but I saw dandelions yesterday and the daffs are trying to bloom already.) Hope you have enough water this year to stave of the wildfires. moar {{{HUGS}}}
