Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: Apr. 21st through Apr. 27th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. It’s in the low 60s and overcast right now. We got some rain I wasn’t expecting – really not expecting as I left the east and west windows open for the cats – but hopefully it will clear off later. Both for electricity generation and so I can walk home. Clouds moved in yesterday afternoon but late-ish so while we didn’t get as much as I’d hoped we did get 18.9 KWHs and the m-t-d is 362. Welp, 4 out of 5 cats seem healthy and are getting along well – & 3 love the canned food. Charlie likes it but he tends to barf it up again. sigh. The Twins play with each other and sometimes Cloud, love Cloud’s old toys, and are happy shedding machines (& box shredding machines). Unfortunately the 5th – Murf – has gone back to not eating more than a few bites here and there if I’m standing beside him petting him and is being grumpy. If it’s the arthritis, these weather/barometric pressure roller coasters must be causing him some serious pain. Heaven knows I’m feeling creaky enough myself.

Folks keep missing two points about impeachment. One of course is that the MSM is the propaganda machine for the same folks the Rs are the political arm. That means if given the chance they will push the “vindication” meme 24/7 both as news and campaign ads. Just like they did against us with the “emailghaza” coverage in 2016. The other is that what they keep saying impeachment will do – hold twitler accountable & show him he can’t get away with what he’s doing – ain’t gonna happen. He said he could shoot someone on 5th Ave and not lose a follower – understood was the part about “and get away with it”. All impeaching him now would do is prove his point and give him one more opportunity to laugh in our faces about how he got away with it one more time. I don’t want to impeach – at least not now, maybe later – precisely because I want the bastid to be held accountable. I want him indicted, tried, and put in prison. I have some very dear friends who disagree with me – I RT their views because I respect them as well as love them – & I wish they’d stop and think about ownership of MSM and character of the perp for a minute or two. sigh. Don’t bring a smug perp to his bought jury for judgement if you want justice. Find a different court/jury to take him to even if you have to make it a different charge. I want Justice.

    No word about anything for anybody – and yes the situations are getting worse while we sit and wait – so prayers and invocations are always welcome. Meanwhile this seems to be a “not enough caffeine in the world…” sort of day but I’m gonna go get more caffeine and see cuz I need to get back to work. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  2. Good morning, 53 and cloudy in Bellingham. Today is our grandson’s 18th birthday….how can that be! We’re celebrating with a family party this weekend so my week will be busy. It’s only 12-13 people, but getting the house and food ready still takes time and energy. Flowers are easy though because it’s tulip time in Skagit County. This video is from last year, but the fields are timeless.

  3. Good morning, meese! Wednesday …

It is 41 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 64. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

Another day, another subpoena ignored by the White House. Elijah Cummings said he would be huddling with other members of his Oversight Committee to decide on whether to vote on a contempt of Congress to the person handling security clearances who they subpoenaed to appear before Congress. The White House is going to try to block Don McGahn from testifying about the Mueller report and the IRS refuses to comply with the demand for Trump’s tax returns. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court is signalling that only Democratic executive power must be reined in and that as long as a Republican administration is working towards long-time Republican Party goals – making the census only about counting white citizens – they can do whatever they want. If that same court rules that a Republican White House does not need to submit to Congressional oversight, it is game over – we can’t do a thing to stop the Republicans other than hope and pray that we can swamp the vote in 2020 and overcome the gerrymanders and vote suppression schemes and Russian (and Saudi) interference in our elections. I will never forgive the “revolutionaries” who stayed home in 2016 – encouraged by their god Bernie Sanders who said that berning it all down was the best way to force a rebuild of our government. No. Berning it all down means that those in power simply amass more power. Good job.

    See all y’all later!

  4. Wednesday Meese

58 here in NYS going up to 60.

After watching Democratic contenders of the white male persuasion garner most of the oxygen at Orange – a new group was launched – yesterday

I was stunned (not really) to see there was no coverage of her town halls and events in NH yesterday

    • hopefully this will help raise her profile there.

    Puerto Rico

    • The AP published an article yesterday suggesting that New Hampshire will “punish” Kamala for not being sufficiently deferential to their First In The Nation status. But I saw my Twitter feed yesterday filled with New Hampshire events – wonderful videos of her interacting with young people, long lines at colleges where she was appearing – so I am not sure what they are talking about. If there is “punishment”, it might be New Hampshire punishing her for not being white, their preferred demographic. She is doing very well in Second In The Nation and Third In The Nation where the Caucasian voter % is quite a bit lower than Iowa’s and New Hampshire’s 92%. Does she need New Hampshire? Probably not since she will likely finish 1st or 2nd in South Carolina and Nevada and 1st in California. Joe “I am an electable white male” Biden entering the race will change polling but no one is sure yet how much PLUS the first actual votes are 8 months away. There is plenty of time for Democratic primarygoers to say “I am not going to go with what the pundits call a ‘safe bet’ – I am going to vote for who I actually want to be president.”

I am glad you have a group to promote Kamala, I hope they tweet a lot! When I started the “I Vote For Democrats” group back in 2012, people said “why does a progressive site need such a group?” Ha!! I was just ahead of my time – 2016 showed EXACTLY why progressives need to be reminded – not voting for Democrats will set our country back a decade and may very well destroy our planet.

    • Thanks for inviting me to join the Kamala group over at Orange, Dee. White males, white males, white males, B-boys (there’ll be another announcing tomorrow), gods.

One B-boy is getting NO coverage that I’ve seen, presumably because he’s black.

We turned on our recording of Mayor Pete’s town hall on CNN last night but it was so boring we switched to PBS instead to watch “Les Miserables.” Better to be heartbroken than bored.

    • I’m following the group. I’m wavering between her and Warren (hoping she’ll add forgiveness of medical debt to her forgiveness of college debt idea)

      • Quite a few folks in the group have Warren/Kamela in their top two
I’m simply elated seeing them get their props.

    • I got a few retweets on your “feud” tweet. When publications tweet out misleading headlines, they should be corrected. It is definitely not a “feud” when one side holds complete power over the other – it is oppression.

      • Lots of good conversation in those comments! It is nice to see old peeps have good taste in presidential candidates. :)

      • I’m gonna have to depend on you posting them (or me being lucky enough to catch it on twitter). At the time I was banned for some reason I wasn’t following Bobby and now I can’t. When they banned me that booted me out of every community I was in (ironically including the one I’m the “founder” of) but it didn’t remove my “follow” list so as long as I can get to my stream I can find diaries for anyone I was following already but I can’t add anybody new. sigh. Thank you.

  5. Good Woden’s Day morning, Moosekind! It’s cloudy here in Ashburn, with a current temperature of 68 F., going up to 74 F. When I took the dog out to the courtyard at 6 a.m. the air was mild, but the wind was blowing up a gale! I hate wind.

Got an appointment with the gastro this morning at 10:30, hoping to get a manicure this afternoon. Wish I could bribe Dearly Beloved into driving me to the doctor, I can’t believe the doctor’s office will keep me there for very long.

The news is awful. It appears to me that the rule of law no longer prevails in this country. As Jan says, unless we swamp the vote in 2020, I just don’t know what’s going to happen.

Wishing a good day to all, and I hope princesspat’s grandson had a wonderful 18th birthday!

    • Thanks Diana…..he enjoyed his day. When I talked to him he and his mom were having burgers for lunch, picking up pizza for dinner, and he had just registered to vote :)

  6. Thunderstorms, with maybe hail expected today. Of course, arriving between 3-4pm. I took Friday off so I could do all the errands I normally do Saturday. Now adding: go to Goodwill & get a microwave. Mine died Monday — I was heating some water & it just…stopped. All the fix-it advice I found said “don’t”. It probably is just a fuse but there’s something you shouldn’t touch… Anyway, I’m gonna get a replacement instead. I’ll plug it in at the store & make sure it works. It is really weird not having one, I keep looking at the dead one to check the time. Anyway, here’s Called Out In The Dark, from Saturday’s show. Just a happy, poppy song.

  7. Good morning, Meesefolk; 37 when I got up this morning, with a bright, cheerful high of 63 today. It appears that the temps are going to plunge by the weekend, with rain added to the mix, because of course it is. I’m going to have to start working in my yard when I get home from work after 7 from the looks of things, because the weather doesn’t look like it’s going to accommodate my schedule any time soon.

I’ve kept up with the news just enough to know that I don’t need the firehose of news in my face right now, because my action items are limited. I’ve taken to calling my senators just to give them Attaboy/girls, and since Sen. Peters is up for reelection, I’ve tossed a few bucks his way. I’ll probably be sending some Amy McGrath’s way too, because my focus is mostly on the Senate, and I would love nothing more dearly than to see Traitor McConnell taken down.

Busy morning, so back to work. Good day to and for all!

  8. It’s 60 & heading for mid 60s on this cloudy morning in Fay., AR. We’ve got 50-50 chance of rain which usually means there’ll be some in the area but it will go around Fayetteville proper. (I didn’t leave the windows open today. The cats are not happy with me. & Murf still isn’t eating. Well, not eating anything but a bit of cheese and kitty treats. sigh) We only got 15 KWHs yesterday and we’ll be lucky to get as much today. The m-t-d is 378 so we’ve passed 2017 and won’t be the lowest production month even if we don’t reach the highest level (476) we did in 2016.

I’m so happy Bobby created the Kamala2020 group, sad I can’t be a part of it, barely managing to not cry at work at the sight of so many of the Hillary team showing up in the comments wanting to be members, a little sick at seeing a couple of names who’ll cause trouble if they can. Blessings on Bobby for starting out with the “we are responsible for our own actions” – a very polite way of saying “don’t give them any excuse to attack/ban us”. I hope they won’t be needed but I’d recommend folks stock up on cute puppy pics and recipes, just in case.

Folks are yelling “impeach” and how that supposedly supports the rule of law while paying little or no attention to facts. Like the Rs are ignoring all demands for evidence of whatever nature, from people appearing before investigative committees to the IRS supplying tax records. THAT is a situation that is stomping rule of law into the dirt then pissing on it. And like the Rs control the Senate – not only would they not remove twitler from office, they’ll acquit him. If you don’t want him to “get away” with the illegal, immoral, and traitorous stuff he’s doing – and I most certainly don’t – then investigate now as best we can with the Rs refusing to obey subpoenas or turn over evidence & indict when we have the power to make it stick. Jan’s right. We might be able to maintain rule of law if we can manage to compel the evidence we’ve requested but really the only way to deal with this is swamp them at the polls. The 2020 election is our Normandy landing – and while some of the battles like Sword or Juno will be relatively easy (I said relatively), most of them are going to be like Omaha – the deadliest, the one we had to continually throw lots of bodies at until we’d overwhelmed the incredible defenses Rommel designed and set up. We are going to have to out vote them – not by pluralities, not by 50%+1 bare majorities but by grand slams of 60% or more in enough states to take both Houses of Congress AND overwhelm the systemic racism of the Electoral College. So we’d best be doing the prep work for that starting last year. (Planning for Overlord under another name started in 1940. To get enough landing craft alone it took from 1940 until 1944 to design, build, and get them into position for the landing.)

    No word about anything from anybody except more bills – 2x higher than told at the time of service (I think Aji’s being systematically overcharged but she doesn’t have the energy or money to fight back & I’m not going to add to her stress by bringing it up) – showing up to increase the stress on the undealt-with conditions so more prayers/invocations, please. I thought tomorrow was going to be my last day but they want me Monday as well – at least long enough for my friend and the new person to do all the meetings they need to do regarding the new person coming on board. Somebody has to keep the office open while they’re doing it. I’ll stop assuming when my last day will be until it happens. Meanwhile, I need to get more coffee and back to work. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

    • Dearest bfitz, you retired from that job only to find they can’t do without you!

Weird, isn’t it? I mean that the Powers are so ill-equipped to deal with the fact of your not being there permanently. Ten gets you twenty you’ll be called in when either of the admins gets sick or goes on vacation!

      • {{{Diana}}} – well, I haven’t been doing what I could do/used to do because as a part-time hourly I can’t have the permissions for a number of the programs used in that job. My friend has been doing essentially close to 2 jobs for the last 18 months. The “noob” wouldn’t – that old kid trick of asking for step-by-step directions every time he’s supposed to do it until you don’t have the time & do it yourself – and I’m not allowed. So I’m devoutly hoping the new hire is both willing and capable of doing it. My friend is so burned out that if she didn’t need the paycheck she’d have walked already. Whether or not they ask me to cover for vacations or illnesses is basically going to depend on budget. They’d love to have me as backup and I don’t mind doing it – but they only reason they’ve been able to have me back is the budgeted money for the “noob” was still there after he walked.

  9. Good morning, 51 and cloudy in Bellingham. Looking through several years of family photos was interesting yesterday…..my grand kids are older now and so am I! Lots of memories stored in my iPhone.

It seems like spring is chilly and late this year as well. Rhodies were in bloom and we were enjoying meals in the patio in the photos but not this year. The outdoor furnishings are still in the garage and my flower pots are waiting for warmer weather.

Time to find some coffee. Best wishes to all.

  10. Good morning, meeses! Thursday …

It is 45 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 66. Rain is in the forecast. Looking ahead to Saturday, we are expecting 2-4 inches of snow and high temperatures dipping back into the 30s!

I was glad to find out about the #SheThePeople forum in Houston and caught Kamala Harris’ segment. Later on Twitter, I caught clips of Bernie Sanders – his finger jabbing at the black women unimpressed by his “March with MLK” was extremely disrespectful. They know that he and his bros ratfked the 2016 election and want none of his nonsense.

So today is the Joe Biden rollout – I will be watching closely to see how that goes. It will be interesting to see the reaction of union members. The trade unions have been trending Republican because “old white male” but the service workers unions have more in common with the new Democratic Party coalition of women, people of color, and minimum wage workers. Will they dump the future for the “promise” of winning with the white?

I can’t even look at what is happening in Washington with the showdown over government oversight. If the Supreme Court sides with Trump that his White House and his administration do not have to comply with congressional subpoenas, it will rend the Constitution. Republicans have created an executive that has no controls – when they lose the presidency, I hope we have payback prepared. THIS more than anything is why we can’t have a kumbaya candidate for 2020.

    See all y’all later!

    • Bernie got booed and there were groans when he dragged out his “he marched with Dr. King” thing.

    • What’s a kumbaya candidate? I missed the whole kumbaya thing so I have no clue. I never saw “The Lion King,” if that’s the source from which the word derives.

      • It is from an old Girl Scout campfire song, at least that’s where I first heard it. Kumbaya is “everyone will come together and the world will be perfect.” I want someone who knows that Republicans are terrible people and won’t mince words trying to get the #NeverTrumpers to love him or her.

  11. This is spot on. Trump is the Republican Party and Joe Biden not seeing that is disqualifying.

  12. Good Thursday Meese
Enjoyed watching She The People – except for Tulsi and Bernie

  13. Storms are through, supposed to be gorgeous weather through the weekend. I watched the Biden video. Really wish he hadn’t gotten in — hope he has a good answer about his handling of the Anita Hill hearing; because it will come up. Anyway, here’s the last song from the concert Saturday: Just Say Yes.

  14. Good Thor’s Day morning, Meese! It’s mostly cloudy at 9:40 a.m. I’m late this morning because I cooked a Sunday breakfast on Thursday for Dearly Beloved. The thing is, I feel mean if I cook a hard-boiled egg for myself and don’t fry an egg for him. Of course he gets a bunch of other things with his egg. Never mind, the wretched keto diet seems to be working.

Off in a few minutes to attend the lecture on Holocaust survivors who live here. One died recently but I remember him well. I want to hear the story of his life. If this thing doesn’t last too long I can still make it to exercise class.

The gastroenterologist had good news yesterday. We’re going to try the first two options he suggested, which are nonsurgical. Only if those don’t work will we do another endoscopy.

Submitted the corrections to the publisher this morning. There weren’t many. Next time I do a book I’ll hire a proofreader!

Not much other news. We may have rain tonight. Jan, I can’t believe you’re going to have SNOW! My goodness, hope you can move to a warmer state after Daughter graduates from college.

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond. As for Beyond—we can only hope the hurricane will sideswipe Mozambique rather than hitting it hard, and that the House will start cleaning up the mess.

    • Sadly, the warmer states have terrible politics. I might consider New England but they are hardly immune from extreme climate – their last few winters have been horrific. I am hoping options present themselves when the time is right.

  15. It’s 57 and raining. It’s supposed to pass through here by noon. Hopefully the sun will come out once it does. We only got 5.75 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d is 383. Disappointing as we could have been over 400 by now if we’d gotten the sun. But we also need the rain so there is that. Murf’s being really grumpy – of course you’d think Freddie would have enough sense to not try to play with an elderly kitty who has arthritis – but he’s eating the kitten chow so I’m feeling hopeful. I wish Freddie would play with Rennie or Cloud and leave Murf alone. I’m really not sure what or how to make that happen. sigh.

There appear to be some serious bots pushing impeachment on twitter. I wish our team would think of that before jumping on that particular bandwagon. Folks with experience – like Nancy Pelosi and Hillary Clinton – are saying investigate and see where it leads. One thing I can personally promise and that’s waving the magic impeachment wand just to see the Rs break it with acquittal isn’t going to “empower the voters” – it’s gonna depress the hell out of them. Which is probably why there are so many serious bots pushing impeachment on twitter.

    More bills, more accidents (falls, burns, ER for K IVs – bills are Aji, accidents are some other folks), and no gee-dee results from anybody anywhere. I’m still sticking with prayers/invocations – don’t want to call the Law of Return on my head with curses. But I feel like it. Meanwhile I’ve got kids to enroll and senior writing requirements to enter. And need more coffee. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  16. Good morning, 41 and partly sunny in Bellingham. We’re going to clean the furniture, bring the outdoor rug and umbrellas out of the garage, and make the patios look like we inviting today. It’s still to chilly and damp to enjoy outdoor meals, but it’s time to have the outdoor living spaces ready to use regardless.

I’m tRump weary this morning, so I’m grateful to have an outdoor project to distract me . Best wishes to all as we find our way through our day.

  17. Good morning, 66 with high of 72 here. Took some melatonin before bed last night and slept pretty well, so maybe I’ll do that again tonight. It’s going to be hot tomorrow and this weekend with highs in the 80s.

Come to California Jan, we have great weather. ????

    • {{{basket}}} – so glad you got some good sleep. I like highs in the 80s as long as the lows are 65 or under. & the humidity is low. Which it mostly is in CA. I just can’t afford to live there. moar {{{HUGS}}}

    • Definitely, California politics is more in line with my values but I would have to find a place there that did not burn up or flood or have earthquakes! :)

  18. Friday Meese
55 and raining going up to 58 here in the Catskill mountains of New York.

    Cyclone Kenneth

    Puerto Rico

    • Sis, if there were no other reason to work for a Democratic Senate majority, the Rethug treatment of people devastated by hurricanes would be it.

  19. Good morning, meeses! Friday …

It is 48 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 61. Sunny skies are in the forecast. Snow is still in the forecast for tomorrow (3-6 inches) with highs in the 30s!

I watched the Biden announcement unfold on the Internets yesterday and made my first contribution to Kamala Harris’ campaign. I hope she connects the two events because that was my intention. It is interesting to see the old guard versus new guard stories and to read the startling polling that shows that 28% of Democrats think being gay is wrong and 8% think women should be seen and not heard. That is Joe Biden’s base – old Democrats who are upset about the social changes. If they are still alive in 2020, they will vote for him and might stay home otherwise. One tweet, though, put it in perspective: “Joe Biden can beat Trump but he is not the only Democrat who can.” I believe that to be true. Next year has to be the year that we all crawl over broken glass to vote for the Democratic nominee – my hope is that it is someone who represents our future, not our past, someone young smart and diverse.

I have a busy day today – yesterday ended up being frustrating as I was trying to do product research and kept getting interrupted. Now I have to more or less start over because some of the selections that I put in my mental shopping cart – after letting them steep for a while – won’t do.

    See all y’all later!
