Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: May 26th through June 1st

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  2. Good Friday morning Meese
67 going up to 76 and raining here in Saugerties

I’m unhappy about the weekend weather – rain predicted for our Pride Parade.

Sigh. Got to go dig up a big umbrella.

    • What is it with these loathsome creeps? They live in tornado-prone states. Is it that they can’t bear the idea of brown people getting disaster relief, even though those they consider their “own people,” meaning white, will suffer?

May the crusty curse of Oliver Cromwell fall upon their poxy penises.

Dee, sorry about the rain tomorrow. You should borrow our weather people—they always get it wrong. You might have splendid weather for Pride Day if you had our weather wenches!

      • Ha!! “You should borrow our weather people—they always get it wrong. “

  3. Hot & sticky, but we might get some rain this afternoon. I moved my basil plant out from the porch, to get free water, just in case. About half of my Twitter friends are music-related, and they all lost their minds last night with the U2 tour of Japan, Korea, New Zealand & Australia was announced. Some are making travel plans, most are just happy for fellow fans who haven’t had a chance to see them in 10 years. Anyway, I’m happy for the people who will go, and I’m glad I have stuff in my feed other than politics, because ugh. I’ve actually been giggling reading Twitter last night & this morning, joy is infectious. And the jukebox in my head was playing Hozier when I woke up. I always wonder if I was dreaming, and what the dream was that had this song in it; or was there no dream, just music. For your listening pleasure: To Noise Making (Sing).

  4. Good Freya’s Day morning, Moosekind! It’s a lovely day, sunny and blue-skied. The current temperature in Ashburn is 65 F., going up to 85 F., with no threat of rain until Sunday afternoon. All the bad weather has been going right around us, anyway.

Because I woke up too early (4:30) yesterday morning and did not take a nap as I was out running around, I slept through the murder mystery play here at Ashby and also dozed off during the Maigret episode we watched on DVD at home in the evening. Today I will jolly well take a nap after lunch.

Had a lovely vegan lunch with Darling Niece yesterday in the old neighborhood, and accomplished quite a number of errands. Today I need to concentrate on cleaning up this place.

Hope everyone will have a good day in their personal lives. As for the national news—expect to pay more for avocados and Corona beer, because Thing is pissed off at the Mexicans.

  5. Seems Sedalia is a bit cooler at the moment than Fayetteville. Local widget says 57 while my home widget says 63. It was supposed to rain here yesterday and didn’t. Not supposed to rain today and I hope that turns out to be true. Yesterday was sunny in Fayetteville, the system generated 22.5 KWHs and the m-t-d is 489. So it’s not possible to break the May 2018 record of 515, but we can definitely do the new 2nd place if we get as much sunshine today as yesterday.

The one seminar we attended was interesting from more than the music standpoint. The lecturer (also a performer – she did a few pieces as part of the lecture and then later at the afternoon concert) was a Black woman from Detroit whose “day job” is teaching music. (Making this year’s festival twice as diverse as last year’s.) Someone asked her why Black musicians don’t seem to want to be associated with the Ragtime music. I’m not sure Dee would agree with her answer – which was very, um, polite – but she said real (Joplin, Jellyroll Morton, Eubie Blake) Ragtime got lumped in with Tin Pan Alley music much of which had really racists covers and they don’t want to be associated with that. (I saw some of those covers and “really racist” is being polite again.) And that racism doesn’t have to be, we can stop doing that. That ragtime and other music which has influences from everybody everywhere is where we can start. Considering her audience (mostly old white people) I guess that’s a good answer.

The music is good. My companion is of course wonderful. A bunch of the musicians remember me from last year. Which I suppose is good. At least they smile when they see me & basket introduces me as having been here with him last year. That’s usually a good sign, right? They’re all great musicians. I saw 1 join 2 others he hadn’t seen in over six months, the three played a piece they’d never rehearsed together, and it sounded wonderful. I love live music as you can probably tell.

    My son let me know the cats are doing fine. In the middle of the afternoon concert ???????????? I had to scoot out of the theater as quickly as I could to take the call. Ashirs nani (DK)/Suzanne (twitter) is driving over from KS to visit and join us for early lunch today so that’s a serious “looking forward to”. I’m gonna do a tour of the internets & get off some emails before basket lets me know he’s up and ready for breakfast. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

    • Thanks for sharing about the ragtime lecture – and yes, I agree. Sry I missed this comment when you posted it.

  6. Good morning, meeses! Friday …

It is 61 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 82. Sunny skies are in the forecast as well as air conditioning. I wish we could have had more than one week between heating and cooling. :(

The orange orshole is melting down and, sadly, planning to take the global economy with him. Is there anyone out there who does not think he will start a war to get attention off the narcissistic injuries he is suffering right now? Plus his little pal in North Korea is executing the people on his management team who displease him – instead of You’re Fired, it is You’re Executed. Yikes!

Today is the last day of May and I have some accounting projects that need to be done plus I am not caught up from unexpected maintenance projects that were added to my platter and a travel day.

    See all y’all later!

  8. Good morning, 58 and sunny in Bellingham. One of the pleasures and challenges of a mature garden is pruning and we can only do the low plants now. So yesterday the tree service guys were here to trim the laurel hedge, remove a mountain hemlock that was growing to close to the house, remove some branches from the quacking aspen that were rubbing on a second story dormer, etc. They are very good, but some of the plants are a challenge, especially the Camilla I’ve let grow as a tree. The twisted branches and evergreen canopy is visually impt to the back entrance but it’s grown tall and is to close to the house so it needed attention. Fortunately Sam’s skills and my vision are compatible! I saved as many branches as I could for future flower arrangements.

I’m avoiding the news today so cleaning up the garden will serve me well. Best wishes to all.

  9. Good morning, Meesefolk; a brisk 52 when I got up this morning that didn’t feel that brisk, because I had two pups that decided spooning was passé, but flopping their hot bodies on my chest and legs was not. It’s supposed to make it up to 77 with sun today, and then, just in time for the weekend, the rain moves in. I may be able to get some yard work done on Sunday, but I suspect my original plan of getting one bed totally weeded, remulched, and planted with some new perennials is overly-ambitious.

Hubby was able to pick up the new-to-us riding lawn mower last night, and I hope he’s outside getting the jungle tamed while I’m at work. Thank goodness for friends with trucks; it saved us from having to rent a truck for a few hours, and I can only hope this doesn’t reignite Hubby’s desire for a truck. He’s like a toddler who goes through phases, and as a result, about every other vehicle he gets is a truck. He’s driving a car now, and for the sake of fuel economy, I’d like to see him stay in non-truck mode.

In the meantime, the purchase of the lawn tractor has delayed the purchase of a working washing machine, but I have to admit, I’m not really minding the trips to the laundromat. I’m suppose it’s not economical over the long-term (although our water rates are so high, I can’t say for certain), but I rather enjoy being able to do multiple loads at one time. Our dryer works, so I don’t have to deal with folding or hanging at the laundromat, which would definitely send me over the edge. The laundromat is on my way home from work, mostly empty at that time, and I can be in and out in 30 minutes…even when I do 3 loads. I was planning to get a new washer and either putting it on a credit card or pulling money out of savings, but now I’m seriously considering just waiting until I have the most/all of the cash saved and continuing to use the laundromat until then.

Good day to and for all!

  10. Saturday Meese. 59 going up to 81 with rain here in Saugerties NY.

It’s the start of PRIDE Month.

I’m proud of our NY AG

    Puerto Rico

    • Your attorney general is great! The vulgar talking yam should keep the letters LGBT out of his mouth – between his disgusting federal court picks, his military ban, and his Religious Freedumb initiatives he has trampled the civil rights of LGBT Americans. Bastid!

I noticed that another mouth-breathing Republican blocked the bipartisan disaster relief bill. Republicans saying “it was just one guy!” are now having to eat their words because there are now three men willing to come forward and show their hate on this issue. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver of Missouri did the Weekly Democratic Party Address (which I will post soon) and he has a few unkind words for them.

  11. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

It is 66 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 68. A front is moving through that is cooling us off (thank goodness!) but it may bring thunderstorms later today.

I was glad to see that the Planned Parenthood clinic in Missouri got a stay on the closing of their clinic. I am not sure where they go from here, though. They refuse – as they should – to force their doctors to do unnecessary procedures on women who are getting medical abortions, procedures that are simply harassment and have no health care purpose. Democrats need to own this issue and put a stop to the state-sanctioned attacks on women seeking abortions and birth control. I wish our voters cared as much as the Republicans voters – heck, we can’t even count on a Democratic governor to veto a draconian ban that has no exceptions for rape and incest! It is deplorable that the Catholic Church is just fine with 11 year old girls carrying their rapist’s spawn for 9 months. I guess a culture that thinks that 11 year old boys are sexual toys for their priests can’t be expected to care about damage done to young people.

The Fighting Back post should be up later this morning, I just need to get a few projects cranked out.

    See all y’all later!

  12. Up & watching the news. What can you say on a morning like this? They happen all too often. There’s only 1 song for today: Peace On Earth.

Their lives were bigger than any big idea

  13. Good morning, Moosekind! Woke up at 4-something, couldn’t get back to sleep, so stayed in bed from a quarter past 6 to a quarter to 8 to let my world know that I was in a snit. This horrible pattern is, well, horrible. Moreover, it pretty much kills getting anything done in the afternoon as I have to catch up on sleep after lunch.

We have tentative sunlight from a sky that’s whited out. Currently the temperature is 64 F., going up to 82 F. No rain is expected until tomorrow afternoon.

We’re going to Mr. Kindergartener’s T-ball game today and taking the dog. Hope I can stay awake. I’m sure the noise level will help.

Last night we spent nearly an hour and a half watching another Maigret episode in French. Dear Goddess, politics is turning my brain: the villain looked like Ralph Northam, one of the detectives looked like Ted Cruz, and I thought I saw Mueller at a table at the back of the nightclub. My Dearly Beloved is getting fed up with the gloominess of the Maigret stories, so perhaps we’ll stop watching. It takes an enormous chunk out of our evening!

I refuse to comment on the latest massacre here in my own state. There is nothing to say, only to grieve and mourn and raise our fists to the sky.

Wishing everyone at the Pond a peaceful Saturday with no bad news.

    • Ha! It is difficult to not have the faces and demeanors of political figures leak into other parts of our life. The images are so pervasive on blogs and Twitter and social media that they are impossible to get away from.

I was wondering if you noticed the font here over the last couple of days had gotten LARGER. When I added the link for Page Two into the body of the post, I had a mismatched “big” tag and it made our comment text bigger in certain places. I kept adjusting my browser zoom and wondering if I was going blind!

  14. Happy new month or something. It appears it’s 62 in Sedalia and 67 back in Fayetteville. It also appears to be sunny both places – today. Yesterday wrapped up May with 23 KWHs and the May 2019 total is 512 – a very close 2nd to last year’s 515 – so that is good. The best June this system has done to date was 568 KWHs in 2015 so that’s my “meet or beat” goal.

The music is wonderful and my company (basket) even more so. So was the visit with Ashirs nani/Suzanne yesterday. I’ll be glad to get back to my own bed (& not have to worry about where I can safely eat) though. And my cats of course ???????????? But I will very much miss basket once he’s left. That’s for later. For now I can enjoy his company (once he gets up) so I am/will.

    I’ve been even more offline than usual but did hear about the latest shooting. This really is who we are. But we don’t have to be. So we keep working on changing that – but we’re pushing a boulder uphill. It’s gonna take a lot of people tagged on to this before we can move it at all much less move it enough it doesn’t just roll right back where it was. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  15. Good morning, Meesefolk; 55 when I got up with a rainy, strong-storms-expected high of 75. I should be able to get in a few hours of yardwork, assuming I start moving soon. Yesterday continued our streak of Life in the Breakable Lane (or to quote Kiddo’s text to me, “…omg, are you guys f*****g CURSED?”). Hubby started to tackle the jungle our lawns had become and is delighted with the “new” lawnmower. Unfortunately, it appears that at some point, he kicked up a rock…and took out the back window of his car. Not just a chip, nor a crack…a shattered web of safety glass. He’s getting it replaced as we speak.

I’m feeling a bit sorry for the weeds in my gardens, because they’re going to receive the Barr-ed from my garden treatment. I’m so angry and disgusted by the AGs very presence in government that I want to do serious damage to something; the weeds will be my focus. With all the talk of impeachment, I’d like to see him be first to go, but of course, the same issues with the Senate apply. But he really is the epitome of intentional evil.

Good day to and for all!

  16. Good morning, 63 and sunny in Bellingham. I seriously over did in the garden yesterday…..good for my psyche, but very bad for my knees. RonK’s back feels the same so we’re going to rest today.

Good question…..“Climate change is one of hottest issues. So why isn’t it working for Jay?”

Smith, the UW professor, says polls showing rising concern about climate change aren’t wrong, but they are deceiving. Because in the hearts and minds of liberals, there’s a monster loose on the land more alarming than global warming.

    “That’s Trump himself,” Smith said.

    ~snip~

….. It also suggests a possible epitaph coming for Inslee’s campaign: He was well-meaning. He may even have been right. But he was after the wrong monster.

Best wishes to all on this sunny breezy Saturday.
