Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: June 2nd through June 8th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Friday Meese

63 here in NYS going up to 83

    Puerto Rico

    • 2:19am for that Puerto Rico power tweet??!!? Yikes, Dee!

The people of Puerto Rico will not soon forget all that Donald Trump has done to them. It must be bugging him how much they hate him though – he keeps mentioning it.

      • Dog woke me up to go “out” and then took his damn time doing the do – so I did twitter while waiting.

  2. Good morning, meeses! Friday …

It is 57 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 81. It will be sunny and the heat index is expected to be 88. Too hot.

I have nothing much to say! I am glad to see that the disaster relief bill has been signed and that money should begin flowing to Puerto Rico but there is still reason to worry because it is still Trump’s racist FEMA managing the projects. I am glad to see that Biden is being dragged kicking and screaming into 2019 and I wonder who the hell is advising him – the unforced errors are not coming from Joe Biden’s mouth entirely, they are being repeated by his campaign communications staff. I am also glad to see a Reuters-Ipso poll that shows every top-tier 2020 candidate beats Trump. I hope one of those others starts gaining traction as “electable” so we have a Biden alternative. Interesting story in the LA Times: For many black voters, 2020 isn’t about pride or making history. It’s about beating Trump

Catrena Norris Carter is a bundle of conflicting impulses.

As a black woman, she’s delighted with Kamala Harris’ presidential bid. As a liberal activist, she’s thrilled with Elizabeth Warren’s groaning board of progressive policy proposals.

But as someone consumed with defeating President Trump, Carter is determined to think with her head, not her heart, and that cold calculation is pushing her toward Joe Biden among the crowded 2020 Democratic field.

The former vice president may not excite her like some candidates. But he boasts one asset that, to Carter’s mind, surpasses all others: As a white male firmly embedded in the political establishment, Biden — more than a female or black candidate — stands the best chance of winning the White House.

She verbalizes what many of us feel – beating Trump is the most important thing in 2020: moral victories will kill us all. But it is too early to reach the conclusion that the only one who can beat Trump is Joe Biden. In 2008, people were nervous as hell that the little known U.S. Senator from Illinois, a black man named Barack Hussein Obama, could win. That year he was not running against an incumbent, though, so the dynamics are different. Has America rejected the notion of a woman as president or just Hillary Clinton as president? I wish I knew the answer to that.

Busy day here as the end of the first week of June means that June projects need to have been started and they have not been. I am building lists of my lists which is usually a bad sign – time to grab a project and start in on it.

    See all y’all later!

  3. Ok. One more 8 hour workday this week. I can do this. I had to leave early yesterday because my stomach looked at my broccoli & quinoa lunch & said “are you kidding me?”. We are short staffed on the best of Fridays, so I have to stay today. Cool morning — in comparison to how it’s been — low 70s, but this afternoon & weekend are going to be brutal. It might even hit 100 on Sunday. But then we’re supposed to get a cold front & rain. If you didn’t watch Rachel Maddow last night, pull it up on msnbc.com. It will enrage you, but everyone needs to know this. This is where the anti-choice legislation is heading. The story is about sick cruelty in Missouri, but it is coming to your state, these are coordinated things. And today’s song is definitely Nina Cried Power.
It’s not the wakin’, it’s the risin’
It is the groundin’ of a foot uncompromisin’
It’s not forgoin’ of the lie
It’s not the openin’ of eyes
It’s not the wakin’, it’s the risin’

  4. Good Friday morning, Moosekind! Overcast today with some wind. Although rain is repeatedly in the forecast, it keeps going around us, with the result that the grass is drying out. Currently the temperature in Ashburn is 71 F., going up to 81 F. later.

Not much to say except that I continue to be very tired. Yesterday at the Communications Committee meeting one story was taken out of my hands, somewhat to my dissatisfaction. The subject of the story wrote it herself, so there’s a lack of focus and structure. Oh, well (shrug), if that’s the way they want it… The CC did like my idea of interviewing the man who left here on Monday for Normandy, where he took part in the Operation Overlord commemoration ceremonies. He’ll be there for the whole month of June.

Women’s soccer starts tonight, perhaps I can stay awake long enough to watch it. I’m amazed at my lack of energy. Weird.

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

    • My TV listings say that a Women’s World Cup game will be at 2pm CDT with a match between France and South Korea but nothing on Team USA. Do they play tonight?

I don’t have a lot of hope for them going deep into the tournament – you can’t win with a mediocre goalkeeper. As much as Hope Solo was vilified, she was athletically gifted; there is no one like her on our current team.

      • Dearly Beloved recorded it so we watched some of it after dinner—long enough to see France score the first goal. After that he switched to something else.

Yes, Hope Solo was a fantastic goalie!

  5. It’s in the upper 60s and still raining although it’s more drizzle right now. It’s been raining since yesterday afternoon – we only got 8.9 KWHs (m-t-d is a hair under 97, most certainly not on track) – and is expected to rain most of today. Not as hard as yesterday – we got over 2″ of rain and today’s projection is .2″ but clouds are clouds and I’m not hoping for much generation today. I just hope we at least get 6 as that’s what I use daily when the A/C’s off. The cats reacted in their own ways. With every band of heavy rain, Cloud was in my room under the bedcovers (nice little cave between the body pillows). When the thunder started Charlie joined him. But Murf and the Twins spent the winter trying to stay warm and dry in cardboard boxes wrapped in plastic. They glanced at the rain and went back to sleep in their usual places – didn’t even look up at the thunder.

Twitler and the Rs are like bullies who demand you be grateful when they stop beating you and let you get a bit/bare sufficiency (maybe) of food & water – and are going to go right back to beating you when they feel like it. Probably using the excuse you weren’t grateful enough to them for stopping the first time. They’re evil and they’re sick. And the only way we will actually be able to get rid of them is elections. We have to vote in the “Untouchables” – the real ones not the “good guy thugs” in the movies – by massive organizing and GOTV, so massive it overwhelms the election fraud the Rs (republicans & Russians) are already setting up. Normandy landing overwhelming Rommel’s defenses at Omaha Beach type massive. The best way to honor the memories of our fathers and grandfathers is to fight fascism with ballots as hard as they fought it with bullets. So our grandsons and great-grandsons don’t have to fight it with bullets again.

    Need coffee and to tour the internets. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  6. Good morning meese, 59 with a high of 79 in Folsom. Great weather for celebrating a birthday. ????

Feeling a lot better today than I did yesterday, having had to leave work after an hour because I was too sick to do anything and spending the rest of the day in bed. Today is going to be a better day, I know it.

    • {{{basket}}} – it has to be a better day. It’s your birthday! ????????????????✨ & moar {{{HUGS}}}

  7. Good morning, 52 and partly sunny in Bellingham. I found an oral history site from my Nevada childhood yesterday and couldn’t stop reading the interviews. But it was heavy reading, and stirred so many memories of living so close (45 miles as the crow flies) to the atomic testing site and experiencing the nuclear bomb testing. Made me feel tired and sad. So today I’m going to try to stay in real life, plant a few flowers, and tend to my feelings of well being.

    Best wishes to all.

  8. Saturday Meese. 58 here in NYS going up to 81.

Loved watching this clip of Kamala in Alabama

  9. Good morning, Moosekind! It’s cloudy AGAIN. Our bfitz wouldn’t like this weather at all. I can cope with rain or shine, but endless cloudy days make me feel depressed. Oh, well, there’s absolutely nothing I can do about it. It’s 65 F. in Ashburn, going up to 81 F. later.

Woke up at 3:30 a.m., was still awake at 5 a.m., so I just went ahead and got up. I shall pay for this later! It’s going to be a busy afternoon with Mr. Kindergartner here and the Belmont to watch in the early evening.

I continue to be amazed by my lack of energy. Perhaps it’s because I can’t seem to accept that I’m getting on in years. When I think of all the work I used to do in a single day and now cannot do, I’m appalled.

Going to try not to think about the news too much today, it’s always so depressing. Wishing everyone a nice, peaceful Saturday.

  10. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

It is 63 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 79. Sunny skies today but a system moving in overnight will cool things down and bring rain.

I am going to go “news lite” today as I try to get some projects done. I did put up the Fighting Back post which featured Senator Mark Warner reminding us that nothing has been done to stop the Russians – or any other foreign power – from interfering with our elections. One wonders if Senate Republicans prefer to have Russia choose our leaders: it certainly worked out well for them in 2016.

When I saw the breaking news email last night about Trump and Mexico “reaching an agreement” I laughed out loud – anyone who believes that Trump “forced Mexico to fix the border” is full-on delusional. He made a threat he can’t back up, sent Mike Pence to clean up his mess, and got a tiny fig-leaf to cover his tiny, er, brain. There will be new tweets to send the press into a tizzy and the cycle will repeat. ::yawn::

    See all y’all later!

  11. Slept in, and watching the MSNBC morning show. Today: clean house & go gym shopping. My health insurance has a thing where we supposedly get big discounts at gyms & there are 2 in my neighborhood. So I’m going to see if: 1. that’s actually the case 2. either one is a place I want to go. Anyway, don’t have to do a lot today & that’s pretty great.

  12. I just got back from the Farmers Market and Co-op – got a qt of the last of the strawberries at the Market and talked to the blueberry guy and the orchard folks. Next week I’ll start going to the Market weekly for as long as the fresh green beans last. I can do every other week for the orchard fruit – early peaches should be in next week. I’ve arranged to get my blueberries for the winter when my Social Security comes in (6 gallons for me plus 2 more for my friend and another 2 for some folks at work – if I order at least 10 gallons he gives me the “farm price” but let’s me pick them up at the Market when it opens on a Tuesday or Thursday instead of actually driving out to the farm). Meanwhile I grabbed some bananas (they’re cheap & will keep) at the co-op to see me through the rest of this week on fruit. Those strawberries will have to be eaten by Monday.

Yesterday we got more rain but not a lot and at least it cleared off enough by afternoon that we generated 12 KWHs – we’re at 110 for the month so we’ve got some catching up to do. Hopefully starting today. Temps are still in the upper 60s but are headed for mid 80s. As long as it dries out, that’s fine by me. Last evening I got into a discussion about impeachment with Propane Jane – we both laid out our sides very politely. We agree on what the real problem is (election security) but disagree on what the solution is. She thinks the Rs can be pressured into fixing the problem via the information that would come out via impeachment. I don’t think the Rs can be pressured into to doing anything, especially anything that would stop their election fraud/cheating. But it was a good discussion – no attacks, just “I disagree & here’s why” on both sides. For some odd reason I seem to have picked up a couple of magat followers. I have no idea what I can be saying that they would find appealing.

    I need some coffee. Then I’ll do my RTs/boosts and other internet stuff. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  13. Good morning meese, it’s 65 with a high of 90 today. I had a wonderful birthday dinner last night and was pleasantly surprised by the presents, which were very thoughtful. Lazing in a bit this morning but will eventually wake up to feed Belle and Bentley.

  14. Good morning, 55 and cloudy in Bellingham. I’ve had an early morning nap followed with coffee, but I still feel half awake. So I’m going to sleepily finish the pruning task I was to tired to finish yesterday and then take another nap! It’s a news lite day for me too Jan. I’ve had more than my fill of tRump nonsense and election angst.

    Best wishes to all.
