Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: Feb. 9th through Feb. 15th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

Morning low of 16 degrees in Madison WI with an expected daytime high of 30. Snow is in the forecast with 4 to 6 inches of accumulation predicted.

Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Sunday Meese.
20 degrees here in the Catskills, going up to 39 with some snow.

Great clip with Whoopi from The Shop

    Puerto Rico

  3. Warm, foggy morning — in the 60s. Watching the news, eating breakfast. Today: church, housework, maybe the gym.

  4. It’s 53 heading for 59 in Fay., AR this Sun’s day morning. Sun itself keeps coming and going. Mostly going as the sky is covered in clouds – although the rain isn’t due until this afternoon. But there are ribbons of space between them where the sun shines through. Yesterday was beautiful. And we generated 11 KWHs – for the first time since early last October!. The m-t-d is 53.83 – not on track for 200 much less 300 but it’s still energy.

I’ve gotten most of my Sunday chores done. Still need to do the floors (surprise) but I’ll do them later. I don’t like the noise of the vacuum any more than the cats do and they’re all asleep right now. Total insanity for February but I found a nice little patch of grass growing along my west boundary yesterday when I was doing a little outside work (very little – after about 20 minutes my hands start shaking and I can’t hold anything). So I dug up a shovel full and brought it onto the porch (put it in a large plant saucer) for the cats. They loved it. Still do actually. They’ve all had a nibble this morning after breakfast and before naps. ???????????? If I had the money, I’d build/have built a cat-fenced area for them outside. Oh well. If I had the money I’d do a boatload of things for a boatload of people.

    Dealing with life on this planet is depressing right now. So I boost everything I can and otherwise focus on friends and local. (We’ve got somebody running again Womack! Celeste Williams has stepped up. The likelihood of her winning is in the slim to none category but at least we have someone. Local includes staffing Dem HQ when it opens up.) So off I am to get more coffee, then read and boost everything I can find before I get back to doing the floors. Healing/Helping Energy to everybody. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  5. Good morning, 32 and partly sunny outside my window. And very early this morning the full moon was visible behind my old maple trees. I love seeing the early morning moon but I closed my eyes “for a moment” and woke up much later.

I’ve replaced the battery in my older iPhone but now that battery needs several charges per day so yesterday I decided to replace the phone with a certified used iPhone but something went wrong in the data transfer so it was a long two hour wait in an uncomfortable store. The good news is I did it and managed to safely drive myself home. The unsettling reality is how tired I got and that I probably shouldn’t have been driving my self home :( I finally just left the new phone with them and will go back on Monday to either finish or rethink the purchase.

February is RonK’s and my birthday month, so we’ll go to lunch tomorrow and wonder how we can possibly be this old! Might need a lot of chocolate cake this year.

Best wishes to all on this sorta of sunny day.

    • Have a lovely time celebrating your birthdays, princesspat! February is a month of birthdays in our family too. A week from today is Miss Pink Cheeks’ birthday. We hope to take her and her younger brother out to breakfast.

  6. Good Sunday, Moosekind! Never made it here this morning because of a Monty crisis. It’s a really beautiful day, lots of sun, with a temp. of 47 F. at this writing (12:15 p.m.) Tomorrow, they say, it will rain.

Poor Monty’s front right paw is swollen. We can even see that. He’s been yelping on and off all morning, poor baby. Dearly Beloved gave him some Children’s Advil and it seems to have helped his discomfort. I have health insurance for him so we contacted three vets who are on the plan, but we can’t even get him in for a “possible” appointment until tomorrow morning.

I’m getting to where I dread going to bed at night because I know I’m going to be awake for hours after I close my eyes. I’m going to start reading stuff I find boring instead of exciting books like the one I finished last night. It was about enslaved people escaping their enslavers (from Virginia to California in the 1850s). White supremacy is sickening, lethal, and not to be borne.

I’m so sick of all the media gloating about “Dems in disarray” and what a mahvelous time Thing’s having! Oh, he’s riding so high! On Twitter the Reverend Barber warned that “pride goeth before a fall.” Let us see.

Wishing a nice, quiet day to all at the Pond.

  7. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

It is 18 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 27. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast. We ended up with 6 inches of snow which was a record for February 9th but the winter totals are not out of line. The “all of it at once” causes problems but fewer problems on Sundays.

A quick scan of the news suggests that I can take a pass on it today. Mayo Pete, whitest of the white candidates, wins Iowhite – NOT breaking. That it will stick in Bernie’s craw and make him (more) obsessed, like Hillary’s narrow win in 2016 did, is the only solace. Buttigieg will join Rick Santorum and Ted Cruz as famous presidents who won Iowa! I hope he gives Bernie “I won’t release my medical records because I am essentially Donald Trump” Sanders a run for his money in New Hampshire. Let the candidates least qualified – by experience and demeanor – knock each other out.

I am trying to get a bead on who is dying from the coronavirus (aka 2019nCoV). Are they dying because they are not getting medical care, dying because the treatment isn’t effective, or dying because they have other medical issues? I have to jump on a plane on Thursday and possibly spend 3 hours sitting in an airport – I really can’t afford to get exposed to a disease that will quarantine me for 14 days. It appears to cause pneumonia and I got the pneumonia shot this year but I can’t find anything that suggests that would help.

The Republican budget will kill the poors and the olds – I hope our party is smart enough to run on that and drops of few of their more radical policy proposals. In 2018 we ran on preserving health care – if we nominate a candidate who wants to blow up the ACA and start from scratch, we will lose. The Las Vega unions are already mobilizing to beat any M4A candidates – their success or failure will be closely watched.

    See all y’all later!

  8. Good Monday morning Meese. It’s snowing here in Saugerties NY. 34 going up to 45, and the snow should change to rain.

Will be posting a quickie diary about this amazing GOTV rap video, later this morning
Don’t let the title fool you

  9. Puerto Rico

    • Great diary and really great video. The RW-owned MSM has spent about 2 generations convincing America that the president is the only important race and the president has all the power. The benefit to them is twofold of course. They stop kids from voting down ballot – and they have readied America for a dictator to take over. A dictator’s powers being no greater than what most Americans already think a president has. I’m so glad to see that video. So very glad to see Truth getting out there – hopefully enough out there – in time for what is probably our last chance to vote Rs out of power. Thank you and really I thank him.

  10. Warm, rainy morning but cold front coming in & it will be cooler when I leave work. We had an amazing children’s choir from Kenya perform at church yesterday, they’re traveling the country to raise money to build an orphanage. Here’s a youtube video from them.

  11. G’morning, Meeses. It’s 37 heading for 48 and overcast in Fay., AR. sigh. We got 4 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d is 57.7 – at least the system is on. Generating in double-digit watts, but on. My son will be here shortly, I’m not sure how shortly, to pick me up. I’ll drop him off at work and do errands – vote, get something in the mail, do the grocery shopping I didn’t do over the weekend. If I don’t manage to read and boost stuff before he gets here, I’ll do it when I get back. Dinner’s covered. As a thanks for letting him use the car so much, he’ll have a pizza ready for me when I pick him up again/give him the car back this evening.

    I don’t know what’s more stressing/distressing – now watching what I’ve seen coming for 50 years or the times gone by when we could have turned things around and stopped this from happening. This one of course lasts longest because it’s day by day by day. Energy going into changing courses at least built hope – until we missed the turn as it were. Acute sick rather than chronic sick. sigh. But I have watched this coming so I’m not surprised. Very distressed but not surprised. Holding the hope/Good Thought for my friends on the edge of survival. Everything the Rs want to do would push some of them over. Well, one of the things the Rs have wanted to do since FDR – steal Social Security – would push me over, too. I’ll worry about that if it happens. Healing/Helping Energy to everybody. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  12. Good morning, 36 and partly cloudy in Bellingham. I woke up to see the moon shining on the water and now the sky is a lovely pinky blue. After so many days of grey skies it’s nice to see color again!

We watched the Oscars last night and amused ourselves by commenting over and over again re what we don’t know about current movies and the people making them. “Nobody told me” was Ron’s mom’s favorite line……got over used again last night :)

Best wishes to all on this Monday morning.

  13. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday ….

It is 21 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 27. Mostly cloudy skies then clearing in the afternoon. Snow tomorrow – maybe an inch or two – but the big weather story is that we will have subzero temperatures arriving Wednesday overnight. Brrrrr!

All eyes are on New Hamp —– zzzzzzzz. Oh, sorry , I dozed off. It appears that we are down to Bernie and Bloomie and I know which one has a better chance to win in November. Bloomberg is making sure to add his gun reform message to his ads so Bernie would get the gunhumper vote – if he weren’t a socialist; he thinks gun control is only for urban areas, to keep “those people” in check – not his great white Vermont hunters.

We will win by running against the just released Republican budget, by the way, it is that awful. If we lash every Republican from tRump down to dogcatcher to that budget and don’t let up, we will retain the House, take back the Senate and win the presidency. Everything else is bullshite and we need to muzzle the left-of-the-left who don’t care about the old, the poor, and the sick and will have no problem killing them all in the name of purity.

I will be scarce for the next few days – I have a project deadline I need to meet and then I have to travel later in the week. I will try to check in but it will probably be via my smartphone so it will mostly hi-and-bye.

    See all y’all later!

  14. Chilly, rainy day — 40s all day long. I set my basil & poinsettia (after Christmas, the church gives the ones from the sanctuary away) out to get some free water. When the alarm went off this morning, I was momentarily confused — thought it was the weekend. Sigh. Didn’t make it to the gym yesterday. Stopped at home to get something warmer to put on, and just… So today there’s a long-sleeve shirt in the gym bag & my sweatshirt to wear over it. And this is the 1st song in the warm up section of my playlist:

I could be you, you could be me
Two raindrops in the same sea
You could be me, I could be you
Two angles of the same view
And we share the same blood

  15. Tuesday Meese. Foggy and 36 here in Saugerties NY, going up to 41.

  16. Good Tiu’s Day morning, Meese! It’s raining and 47 F. in Ashburn at the moment, with 54 F. and showers predicted for the afternoon.

Yesterday was a Queen Bitch of a day. We threw on some clothes, loaded poor Monty into the car, and arrived at the vet at 7:30, hoping there would somehow be a blank spot in their schedule so he could be “seen.” All weekend he limped and yelped in distress from the pain in his paw, but we couldn’t get him into any of the three dog hospitals on his insurance. He was finally attended to at 9, when a blank spot popped up in the schedule. The vet said the paw didn’t appear to be broken or sprained, but gave him a 24-hour injection for the pain. By the time we left it was 10 a.m. Arriving home at 10:30, it was 11 before coffee and toasted muffins were ready, so we ate breakfast at 11!

We skipped lunch, of course, and made do with takeaway from the View Bar across the parking lot. We finished dinner at 5:00 so it really is time for breakfast now.

Then I started on the income taxes. WHY does it have to be so complicated? WHY is it different every year? Today I’ll have to call the bond fund people because I don’t know what the h— state holds our bonds! Duh.

The crowning part came yesterday evening, when I received a fraud alert from my bank and credit card company. Apparently someone charged $359 on my credit card at WALMART! I never, ever, ever shop at Mall Wart! It was an online theft since the credit card in question was in my wallet the whole time. It’s a bummer, and I’ve already started receiving agitated emails from companies who have recurring orders from yrs truly.

I’m getting to where I can’t look at the front section of the WaPo. This morning there’s a front-page article about how Americans are so happy about the economy they’re “grinning like [WaPo atrocious grammar, not mine] it’s 1999.” Huh? Do these happy people know what happened in the year 2000? Big Tech Crash, that’s what! Also, what wonderful economy? Most jobs are gig jobs without benefits or $7 an hour jobs with erratic, stress-inducing schedules.

Gods, it’s too depressing for words. As for NH, I hope Mayo Pete wins in NH, because I’m quite sure he’ll lose in SC. When I think how this country STILL, in 2020, refuses to consider a woman president; how we will have to vote for a doddering old white guy against another visibly deteriorating, evil white guy; how half the country seems to be composed of vile racists, I just want to SCREAM!

However, it’s well past 8 a.m. and I want coffee. Will spend the rest of the day on the income taxes and administering one pill after another to poor little Monty. Hope everyone at the Pond has as good a day as possible. Don’t watch the news.

  17. It’s 35 heading for 44 and overcast – again – in Fay., AR. We have one (count ’em – 1) sunny day forecast out of the next 10. The other nine are varying degrees of cloudy, with or without rain. sigh. Yesterday we generated 3 KWHs. The m-t-d is 60.7 which is not on track to reach 200 much less the 300 of 2016’s February. Not helpful to covering my energy use or my mood.

    Actually there’s not a lot out there to help my mood in any category. Other than my own health and income are currently OK – not great but OK – there just isn’t. (My sons’ & their families are the same – health & income not great but OK.) My friends are dealing with health issues and money issues, neither of which can I do much to help with. And of course the safety net that’s supposed to be taking care of them not only isn’t doing much but is about to get shredded some more. With some potential attacks on my own income so there will be even less I can do to help anybody else. At least I can still feed my rescue cats, put out a bit of kibble for the ones I can’t rescue, and get birdseed out to the wild birds. Praying/Invoking/Channeling Healing/Helping Energy to everybody. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  18. Good morning, 44 and partly sunny in Bellingham. Yesterday’s birthday lunch was fun but a bit sober as we talked about the reality of aging. And we have lived in Bellingham for 50 yrs…..how can that be!

Despite my misgivings I finished the purchase and set up for the new iPhone. It’s a reconditioned iPhone 8 so the price was much better that for a new model and it doesn’t overheat and/or cut out mid conversation and the battery holds a charge…. imagine that :) Antique collector that I am makes me think phones should last forever but assumption doesn’t apply to electronic gadgets.

Best wishes to all on this slightly lighter shade of gray day.
