Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: Feb. 23rd through Feb. 29th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

    Corona Virus

    Puerto Rico

  2. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

It is 10 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 36. Sunny skies are in the forecast. March here will come in like a lamb (not lion!) with highs of 46 degrees expected tomorrow!

So the COVID-19 virus is being labelled a Democratic Party hoax and tRump is encouraging his supporters to ignore all measures to protect themselves. Pray-away-the-disease Mike Pence, point man for the virus response, is saying it’s no big deal, only one American is hospitalized. In a just world, the virus would attack only MAGAts and cull the herd of the stupid people who believe the rantings of a sociopath and his cowardly congressional minions. Unfortunately, innocent people will die because the government programs put in place to protect us were shrunk so much that we have no ability to respond – there are shortages of test kits, shortages of drugs needed to combat the symptoms and a shortage of scientists, many having been driven from the government by the Republicans. Goddess help us.

Today South Carolina votes in an actual primary (no caca!) but an open primary where Republicans have been urged to claim a Democratic Party ballot and vote for Sanders, the Russians preferred candidate. It will be interesting to see if they will take the time to do that; there is no Republican Party primary so no reason to go go the polls except to ratfk our election. Most people believe that Joe Biden has to win and win big or his candidacy is toast. No one will probably drop out after South Carolina but by next Tuesday night – post Super Tuesday – the field will likely be much smaller. Biden won’t drop out, he is hoping to convince Democrats – in a brokered convention, if need be – that he is the guy. Wisconsin has Sanders then Bloomberg in recent polls so Bidenmentum is at 0 here. A South Carolina win might make people stop and rethink their choices. Our early voting starts the week of March 16th so we will have Super Tuesday results to chew on for a while.

The Democratic Party Weekly Address is by Senator Richard Blumenthal calling out the cowardly Republicans for refusing to take up the House’s background check bill, passed one year ago. I will put up the Fighting Back post later this morning.

I am still playing catch-up. I have one hard deadline (corporate tax return due by March 15th) and one promised-for-next-week project. I think I will do the tax return because there is no “give” there and can probably buy some time on the promised-for-next-week project. I hope so!

    See all y’all later!

  3. No leaping for me on leap day. I will go out this afternoon & knock on doors ahead of Tuesday;s vote. Right now, I’m eating breakfast & watching Ali Velshi’s morning show on MSNBC. I took Monday & Tuesday off so I can do more campaigning.

  4. It’s 43-heading-for-67 and sunny at the moment in Fay., AR. I ‘ve the sunny part. The wind needs to die down before outside is comfortable, even with a jacket, but the sunshine is lovely. We generated 14.57 KWHs yesterday! That’s most since early September. The m-t-d is 210.4 so if we can get another 12 even today (another 14 would be nicer, of course) we move into 3rd place for February production on the 4K system. That’s almost as cheering as the sunshine itself. This year started out pretty sucky. Maybe it’ll get better as we go. Maybe.

    Anyway I’ve just got the next 3-1/2 weeks worth of breakfast sausages out of the oven. They’ll go in the freezer as soon as they cool down. I’ve got end-of-month/beginning-of-month financial and energy data to enter in my spreadsheets. There’s very little in this life that has closure – until the end of it, maybe – but the monthly accounting does. Healing/Helping Energy to everybody. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  5. Good morning, 42 and partly sunny in Bellingham. Ron and Ava were going to plant trees with a land trust group today but the forecast was for pouring rain. It rained hard in the night but now I see a light blue sky outside my window. Oh well, Ava and I will start clearing the clutter from the closet regardless.

The back of the closet is organized with clearly labeled file boxes, but the front is teetering stacks of towels, quilts, assorted linens, etc. Everything is in white plastic bags and I can no longer remember what is where so yesterday I bought six clear totes to store what I keep in a more accessible way. We’ll pull everything out of the closet, decide what stays ,and donate the rest. Her strong young legs will be busy!

Best wishes to all on this partly sunny day.

  6. Good Saturn Day noon, Meese! It’s partly cloudy and cold out there. Our morning low was 24 F., the current temp. 34 F., and our high will be 38, not great. Despite the clouds, no rain is predicted.

Yesterday, after a nice, easy drive to visit my friend at Greenspring, I had a most unnerving experience. We were sitting in chairs facing each other as we chatted, and all of a sudden I saw two of her! She continued to be wavy and blurry and so did everything else in the room. I didn’t have a headache but I feared the onset of another TIA. I called my husband to give my friend’s name (her surname is very complicated), her address, and her phone number, in case he had to summon a Lyft to get over there and then use our car to drive me to the hospital. However, it passed off after 15 minutes or so, and after that everything was fine.

It’s been five years ago this very month since I had that Transient Ischemic Attack. I’ve just had my annual visit to the eye doctor (she said I’m fine for another year), and I had my labs done and general checkup at the beginning of this month. So I don’t know what the deal is. However, Monday morning I’m going to call the doctor’s office and see what she says. This is too bizarre.

Meantime, back at the ranch, we took Monty to the vet for a checkup this morning. He is much, much better, walking more easily, and has lost two pounds! He’s been on a diet all this week and will continue to be on it until he slims down to a reasonable level for a beagle. Luckily he quite likes the baby carrots he’s getting now instead of the tasty high-carb dog biscuits he used to receive. He still can’t jump up on the sofa, though.

Bill Nelson (former senator or guv of Florida?) is coming this afternoon at 3 to urge us all to vote for Biden. You betcha! Bigly. I think I’ll go.

There’s a Mardi Gras buffet tonight and Mr. Kindergartener is coming for a sleepover. Grandma rushed out to buy strawberries, yogurt drink, and baby pancakes for his breakfast. He’s so predictable!

The girls were fun last night. I read “The Twins” to them and they seemed to enjoy the poem. The eldest child read a dramatic 18-page story she’d written to the rest of us, and then we played the Dictionary Game, which they seem to adore. I’d like to write a short playlet for them so we could all take turns reading our parts.

Will be keeping an eye on South Carolina all day. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!
