Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: May 3rd through May 9th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. It’s 54 heading for 64 and overcast. Supposedly the rain’s done (had a really heavy spate around 3 am) but the clouds won’t go away and it’s still a misty outside. Supposedly it’ll get sunny this afternoon and stay so through the weekend. We’ll see. We got 9.2 KWHs yesterday. The m-t-d is 106.8 – and while it’s still possible to reach 500 for the month I’m not taking bets much less giving odds. The irises are happy. So’s my garden sage. (So’s the honeysuckle although I really wish it wasn’t.) The cherries on the south and west sides of the tree seem to be doing fine. The veggies in the boxes are still here and growing. If they can keep on keepin’ on, so can I.

    World, national, & state news sux. And will as long as the fascists are in power – & have control of the media. And while the insurance inspector came by yesterday – at least I assume that’s who was walking around on my roof – I haven’t heard yet whether or not replacing the roof has been approved. Which also sux. I switched to Farm Bureau 5 years ago because the Horace Mann premium was getting a bit iffy for me to pay. But a cheaper premium is nothing but money down the drain if they never approve the claims. Horace Mann was very good about dealing with my claims. But then Horace Mann was created to help teachers. Farm Bureau is now and always has been an R-supporting insurance company and not much else. sigh.

    My friend came by yesterday evening to pick up some stuff that had been delivered to her old address across the street. (I’m keeping an eye on anything delivered there at least until the house is actually occupied.) We had a nice 10-minute visit with her on the porch (& masked) and me in the house. (I really should have put on a bandana. Very remiss of me. But I did stay in the house.) Bless her, she brought me some BBQ – I’d told her I was really getting tired of my own cooking. LOL. Friends are what make life worthwhile. Channeling Healing/Helping Energy to everybody to your shaping. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  2. Good morning, 47 and mostly sunny in Bellingham. Another night of restless sleep, another slow and sleepy morning. I feel like I’ll be lost in tRump angst forever!

    I’m going to try to work in the garden today, but between nesting birds, busy bunnies, and snacking deer it seems more like a habitat than a flowering garden. This year I’m going to try to plant fewer flowers and let nature take over. The soil is too cold and wet to plant begonias anyway, but the winter pansies are still blooming and the ferns and other perennials I’ve planted in the pots are growing. I’ve enjoyed planting complex flower containers but I know it’s time to scale back so I hope I can.

    Best wishes to all.

    • {{{princesspat}}} – being around growing things, that’s what will see us through. Even if it’s “just” a park or wilderness that we can only see/hear/smell through a window. Healing Energy & moar {{{HUGS}}}

    • We have been seeing the migratory birds return since the beginning of May and it is a lot of fun. The Orioles came back a few days ago and we have oranges out for them. The rose-breasted grosbeaks have been here for about a week and we saw some sort of tanager the other day. The next sign of the season will be the flowering trees blooming but it hasn’t happened yet – lots of buds and the start of spring greens taking over the wetlands and woods behind the house.

  3. Saturday Meese. 31 here in Kingston NY going up to 45 – snow predicted.

  4. Good morning, meeses!! Saturday …

    It is 27 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 55. Sunny this morning then rain this afternoon and into tomorrow.

    It is interesting to see my local right-leaning newspaper start putting more aggressive headlines related to the mess that tRump and his miscreants have created and preside over. This morning was “Expert advice tossed aside” rather than what might have been, in the past, “CDC report not needed” or something that gives the administration the benefit of the doubt. Headlines are sometimes all that people see and they should reflect the content and tone of the article. Tossing aside expert advice in the middle of a global pandemic should alarm people and should be the take-away.

    What should also alarm people is that the White House has become a viral hot spot. It should not shock anyone that a person who is married to Stephen Miller, tRump’s Goebbels, would be unsanitary. It should also shock no one that a guy who continues to say that the virus is a hoax and will “just disappear one day” would not take any precautions to avoid getting infected or putting others in danger by unmasked contact. I don’t wish ill on anyone but shutting the White House down for 14 days would be good for America. I hated seeing tRump spraying spittle all over 90 year old World War II veterans. Lock him up!

    I am not going to put up a new Fighting Back post – the one with Jim Clyburn talking about the digital divide crisis can stay up there another week. The Democrats in the Senate were in charge of the Democratic Party Weekly Address this week and chose ethically compromised New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez as the face of the party. No, thank you! I will put the video of the address and a link to the transcript in a comment. I will also post a comment that includes Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s weekly press conference. Has anyone noticed how her face masks are color coordinated with her outfits? I wonder who is making them for her.

    I slept until almost my normal wake up time today but did not fall asleep easily so I am not sure how much sleep I got. I have too many things in my head and it is possible that some of the sleeplessness is from the anxiety over unfinished projects that I really need to do but which I am finding no energy to do. Pretty soon the state will reopen and I will need to deliver on promised projects delayed since the end of February.

    See all y’all later!

  6. Cool morning — 63 degrees. I can’t believe it’s snowing where some of y’all are. I’m going to walk this afternoon, because the high will be 77. Right now, I’m eating breakfast & watching the news. Got windows open to let the cool in.

  7. The widget says 43 heading for 68 and sunny. There’s still some frost on the shaded areas of the roof but I pulled the sheet off the veggie boxes so they can get the sunshine coming in under the oak tree branches – it’s almost high enough that the tree blocks the light. And will until after 1 pm. Which would be noon except for DST. We generated 17 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d is 108.8 – not on track but more than I use. As long as we stay at “more than I use” I can’t say I’m happy but I’m content with that. I haven’t heard back from the insurance adjustor yet. Neither has my agent. I’m neither happy nor content about that but there’s nothing I can do except wait. And if they rule this hail and wind damage to be a “maintenance issue and not covered” like they did several years ago after some wind damage (including missing shingles) I’m changing my insurance company. Lower premiums and my agent 2 miles down the road doesn’t balance never actually accepting a claim.

    Wings’s nephew Ona died Thursday night. He fought the good fight – been on a vent since last August – treatment delayed until December really shot what chances he had of beating the West Nile virus-caused meningo-encephalitis. That he got treatment at all says he had “good insurance” as far as the U.S. is concerned. Arguing for months with the insurance company about transporting him out of state to where the actual treatment could be done says everything about what “good insurance” means in the U.S. One more good guy gone. The rest of them/us pick up our loads and keep going. It’s all we can do.

    I wish I weren’t allergic to outside. I love it. When I was young it was hard to get, much less keep, me inside. Now? Now if I get too close to practically anything growing in my yard or neighborhood I start having trouble breathing. If I stay out too long even if I don’t get too close same thing. As to getting close enough for anything to actually touch me? Even if it’s a light enough touch I don’t notice? I’ve got contact dermatitis on the back and side of my neck right now and I haven’t a clue what from. Just pulling a sprouting tree or picking up a piece of trash and… sigh. But since I have the good house to be safely in, I will count myself blessed – and try to pass blessings on. Channeling Healing/Helping Energy to everybody to your shaping. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  8. Good morning, 54 and mostly sunny in Bellingham. RonK has been doing the big garden cleanup this year and I’ve started the fine tuning. Amazing how many leaves and twigs blow around in the winter and lurk around the edges in the spring. Today we’ll finish the patio clean up, bring out the cushions, outdoor rug, and the rest of the umbrellas. I don’t expect many visitors this year, but we enjoy the outdoor living spaces so we’ll put the furnishings in place.

    Best wishes to all on this sunny Saturday morning.

    • {{{princesspat}}} enjoy your outdoor living spaces. ‘Tis the season for it. Healing Energy & moar {{{HUGS}}}
