Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: May 24th through May 30th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Good morning, 58 and sunny in Bellingham. I pruned and cleaned the planting beds around the back entrance yesterday and have the pots ready for a few flowers so I’m going to tie a mask and go to a garden shop today. It’s finally warm enough to plant begonias and I’m finally ready to enjoy tending them,

The basement door replacement project was much more complicated that I thought it would be but our son has done a great job. All the original door framing had to be re done, and the new doors and frames had to be resized to fit old house reality so it was an exacting process. I was glad to see the caulking go on yesterday because that means painting is next, yay!

I rode along on a trip to the lumber yard yesterday and waited in the truck while my son got what he needed. The parking lot was busy but I was glad to see most of the contractor guys were wearing masks.

Best wishes to all as we make it through another day.

  2. Saturday Meese. 63 going up to 80 here in the Catskills

    Minneapolis History

    Puerto Rico

  3. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

It is 48 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 66. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast. Another gorgeous cool dry day!

The Supreme Court in a 5-4 ruling refused to hear the butthurt complaints of a California church that claimed that churches are singled out under public health orders in ways that stifled their death wishes. Chief Justice Roberts joined the sane minority in pointing out that the California order reflected science and that churches differ from big box stores in the density and duration of the time spent together, differences that are consistent with the differing treatments under the orders. I will expect to find another anti-John Roberts tweet being shat out by the garbage person living in the White House. The science is clear – singing and chanting and hallelujahing on each other in tight spaces for 30 minutes will spread COVID-19 to everyone in the room if one of the singers/chanters/hallelujahers has the virus. Any church that cares so little about its congregants deserve our contempt.

I will leave it to people much smarter than me to weigh in on the George Floyd murder and the demonstrations that are resulting in loss of life and property – not the “property” as much as the businesses that employed people and that the community relied on during the pandemic. Someone said the rioting videos looked like they had a lot of drunk white people in them, one video appeared to show an undercover cop breaking windows to plant a false narrative, and we know – from Ferguson – that the anarchists show up at these demonstrations to do what they can to accelerate the destruction of the social order. I saw videos later of people in the community cleaning up. I can’t pretend to understand the pain of those targeted by law enforcement and the careless disregard for black life – and the frustration in knowing that murderers who wear badges are protected by the courts. Kamala Harris is doing a good job and Joe Biden is setting the right tone. If he does not pick her as VP – especially after this incident – he is a fool.

    See all y’all later!

  4. There was a small protest in Austin last night, news says around 100 people. Wish it was bigger, but glad there was no trouble. Not walking today, taking that “rest day” thing seriously. Abs & arms — I found a standing abs workout on youtube, done it a couple of times & it’s okay. Gorgeous weather, so I may just go outside just to look.

  5. Good Saturday morning, Moosekind! It’s a lovely, dry day here with white veils drifting across the softly blue, unpolluted heavens. One can see the lack of traffic pollution in the sky and hear the lack in the suddenly loud birdsong. I rather like it this way. At the moment it’s 72 F., on its way up to 82 F. Blissful!

Had a decent, drug-induced eight hours’ sleep last night, which makes up for the two previous horrid early morning waking times. Because of the right amount of sleep, I also have some energy.

Turned in the two articles (just call me “Last-Minute Lizzie”) before the June 1 deadline, so now free to get on with the other stuff. I need to get down to the garden to water it. Also, with a weekend free of rain and sports distractions we plan to set the porch to rights.

Today is my precious Mr. Kindergartener’s birthday! He’s six. Will he be able to go to school in the fall? Stay tuned to this station.

Wishing all a good day on one the last days of May.

    • {{{Diana}}} – Happy Birthday to Mr. Kindergartener! ????????????????????????

  6. It’s 66 heading for low 80s and beautifully sunny – like yesterday. The new configuration is definitely more efficient. Yesterday we generated 25.34 KWHs – 1st time over 25 in a single day (we’ve come just under occasionally) for this system ever! The m-t-d is 321 and if we can do 25 again today and tomorrow will wrap the month at about 370. Not great but considering being down a full week plus all the cloudy days…

As to what’s going on…I’m appalled. Not surprised. To all the folks bleating “I knew he’d be bad but not this bad…” I have politely said “I did” – but what I want to say is “weren’t you paying any effen attention in ’16? Hillary warned you, the Obamas warned you, every Civil Rights/Human Rights leader still alive warned you. Geedee ‘won’t be that bad’, purity vote/no vote/evil vote – there’s as much blood on your hands for handing the knives as the butchers using them.” All categories – pandemic response, murder by cop, calls to shoot citizens – which calls out the KKK as well as gives cover to more murder by cop – racism, misogyny, xenophobia, homophobia…genocide all. All categories come back to foundation. The fascists after long years of planning and implementing covertly now have enough power to come out from under cover and grab for the rest in plain sight. And whether or not we have one last chance to stop them – in November – or it’s already too late I do not know. But we gotta try.

    Folks in my nearest circle of caring/love are of course impacted. Anyone who isn’t retired or otherwise getting funding from a (currently) secure and stable source is in trouble. Some of them are still dealing with the fallout of the last time the Rs crashed the economy (Aji and Wings for example have never financially recovered from the ’08 Crash and that has at least exacerbated where it hasn’t caused health issues, for Aji severe health issues.) So. If I were rich… Well, in many ways I am rich. But not the kind of rich that can wipe debts, purchase needed equipment, pay for repairs and medical stuff – and get people back on their feet on solid ground so they can take it from there. So I send what I can – a bit for groceries or dogfood (or catfood, depending) – and as much Energy for their shaping as I can. It takes a lot of metaphysical Energy to impact the physical world and obvious I can’t Channel that much – but maybe, added to what others Channel and their own, changes for the better will happen. Gotta try that, too. So. Channeling Healing/Helping Energy to everybody, to your shaping. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{{HUGS}}}

  7. Good morning, 56 and partly sunny in Bellingham. I keep re-learning old lessons so yesterday I realized, once again, that just being in the garden vs working in the garden doesn’t make my creaky joints complain all night! I refined my flower list, puttered around, and enjoyed a patio visit with an old friend and her shaggy dog. Even poodles have to wait for Phase Two to get a proper haircut.

Our sons are starting the big move today. One son is a collector and the other is not so working together is interesting :) Collector son has been sorting books all week and has large donation stacks but all the places that take used books are closed so they need to be bagged and set aside for now. He’s hoping to get all the small stuff and boxes moved to the new house this week so the movers will only have furniture to move next Saturday.

The new house has a garden so RonK helped him pot up raspberry bushes and his tomato plants yesterday. And this week we will move all of his decorative pots and porch furniture. The new house doesn’t have a porch but it has a small garden house with a deck so that will be outdoor living spot.

Best wishes to all on what is for us a peaceful day in the month of May. Wish the same were so for so many others in our troubled country.
