Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: July 26th through Aug. 1st

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Good morning, meeses!! Saturday … Happy Lammas, to all!

It is 57 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 81. Partly cloudy skies are in the forecast.

I wish that the embrace of anti-science by Republican politicians would harm only them but they are literally killing their constituents, many of whom are being unwillingly recruited into the #RepublicanDeathCult. This morning I read an article in the NYTimes about a school superintendent in Indiana being “shocked SHOCKED” that opening the doors to in-person classes would result in a quarantine on Day One as one of the students tested positive for COVID-19. They are trying to trace who a middle-school student would have come in contact with at the school on the first day of classes!! Good luck with that. Now we are hearing about a summer camp in Georgia that was open for only for four days and where over half the campers tested positive. I fervently hope that there is a political price to pay for the criminal disregard for human life. Young people will die, young people will have debilitating pre-existing conditions as they recover, young people will live with the knowledge that they likely infected their at-risk relatives and killed them. Goddess help us all.

Wisconsin Governor Evers issued a mask mandate, effective today, to try to stem the tide of the disease which is also resulting in travel bans from states that feed our economy. Business leaders welcomed it – it is much easier to enforce “no shirt, no shoes, no mask – no service” when it comes from a government requirement rather than just caring about their employees and customers. Of course the Republican leaders in the legislature are working now to pass a law to override the ban – or to sue if they can’t find a supermajority in the Senate (they have one in the Assembly). At least no one has claimed that cities and counties can’t issue their own bans – yet. I will only travel to locales that have them and which plan to honor the governor’s mandate. Yesterday on my drive, I passed through counties that had ginormous Trump-Pence signs along the highway. Someone should put up blue highway warning signs on all the exits “COVID-19 zone, exit at your own risk.”

Today I am picking up the pieces of a too busy week filled with crises and culminating in a planned trip yesterday. My travels should be done now for at least a couple of weeks and I think my August workload will be a little lighter. There was another terrible meltdown with my email service yesterday and I will be moving it into the cloud in order to bypass three layers of filtering that is making a hash of delivery. I hope to have that done today so that I can hit the ground running on Monday.

    See all y’all later!

  2. Happy Lammas and it’s 64 right now! Heading for 85 (which in a “normal” year might be our overnight low although I thank goddess/es it isn’t). The widget says partly cloudy but at least at the moment we’ve got sunshine. I hope the clouds hold back a bit while we establish the grid for August. We wrapped up July with more rain and just over 6 KWHs to bring the month’s total to 515. Not great but not bad either – and about 10% more than we’d have gotten this cloudy year with the old configuration.

Except for Aji’s puppies there’s not a whole lot new or different other than the month/section of the Wheel itself. The WWII France analogy still pretty much holds. For white people it’s like living in Vichy France, for BIPOC it’s like living in Nazi-Occupied France. Election day is D-Day – Normandy landing – and we have to overwhelm them with votes just to establish the beachhead. So for us living under the Nazi rule, directly or filtered through Vichy, the days seem longer the supplies shorter and we’re just hanging on to the knowledge that somebody’s opposing the evil ones and the hope that it will be over someday. Which is absolutely nothing new to BIPOC.

    Lammas is a harvest festival, the first of the year. We’ve sown hope and care, kindness and love, gifts of our heart and gifts of our purses. There’s been drought, flood, hail – and fungus and pandemic. Let’s see what kind of harvest we get. Channeling Healing/Helping Energy to everybody everywhere to your shaping. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  3. Good morning, Moosekind, and a blessed Lammas to you all. Today is our Sister Dee’s birthday, so Sis, hope you are enjoying your day! It’s also M’daughter’s birthday. Must text her in a moment.

It’s overcast with possible showers this afternoon in NoVa. We’re due to go to a birthday barbecue this afternoon at Eric’s house to celebrate little Ethan’s birthday. Currently the temperature in Ashburn is 73 F., going up to 85 F.

That hurricane is making its way up the coast and may bring us rain from Tuesday into Wednesday. I am beside myself about the mail slowdown, can’t stop tweeting about it.

I’m also resigned to the fact that 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. is my “new normal.” I hate it. One night I managed to get 7 hours and 53 minutes of sleep and felt perfect all that day. I need 8 hours but don’t get it. I foresee a nap in my future.

Will do some chores this morning and possibly get some writing done. I still don’t feel like taking a walk, it’s so humid.

Wishing all at the Pond a good day.

    • I find myself quite content with 6 hours of sleep. I used to take afternoon naps that let me stay up late enough so that the 6 hours was between 10 and 4 but that has been difficult with a busy household buzzing around me; lately my 6 hours has been between 8 and 2. I hope that after the fall semester begins, I will be back on my nap schedule.

I am not too keen on telling Nancy Pelosi what she must focus on, but fixing the Post Office should be high on her list. tRump put his stooge in charge with instructions to destroy it and there were no peeps from Republican electeds because they know that low voter turnout helps them; nothing will lower turnout more than having the Post Office fail to deliver ballots in time to be filled out and returned in time to be counted.

  4. I did a walk/run this morning, it’s actually fairly pleasant since we got rain yesterday. Now I’m eating breakfast & watching the news. Later today I’m buying groceries, and….. I dunno what else.

  5. Good morning, 62 and partly sunny in Bellingham. I made more pruning progress in the garden yesterday. I got to tired to finish what I started, but one of the joys of gardening is that it will be there when I get back to it. RonK can now use the front porch railing without a prickly wild rose scratching him so the most impt task got done!

Our sil had a no choice knee surgery yesterday but thankfully all seems to be well. They have really locked down with Covid, so the surgery was a big worry for them but a meniscus tear needed repair and a growth needed to be removed and a biopsy done. We will all be relieved the possibility of Covid exposure is over and the path results returned.

Another quiet day, and as always, my best wishes to all.
