Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: Aug. 2nd through Aug. 8th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. It’s 70 heading for 84 and raining so dark the PV system isn’t on. Hopefully later. We generated 15.9 KWHs yesterday and are sitting right at 120 for the m-t-d (so on track and bit – which hopefully will make up for today). Not the best day to be doing laundry but I started before the rain did. This is an extra – couch and chair coverings the cats sleep on. On the off chance that whatever’s been biting me is inside rather than outside I’ve bugsprayed (which you know I hate) the upholstered stuff and will have clean covers to put over them as soon as they dry. Which may take a while considering it’s raining.

Going out early, even with stores that don’t do senior shopping hours, is the safest in this town. Not very many people in there in the first place and most of them masked in the second. All the store personnel are masked now that the Guv’s finally mandated it. But as to keeping any kind of social distancing…sigh. I found out from a twitter friend last night that DMV here is now closed because somebody tested positive for COVID. She wanted to make sure I knew since I’d been there for a couple of hours Thursday last week getting the Camry street legal. I can’t say that makes me happy. But while I do have respiratory symptoms, they’re the same ones I “normally” have so I’m guessing I don’t have it. (One of these days I need to get a thermometer – the one symptom of COVID I almost never have is fever.)

Reading Aji’s tales of the puppies – and how Cricket is healing (he’s stopped crying at night and he actually played with the Sunny, the boy pup, for a little bit yesterday morning) – is heartwarming. Such warmth is needed in this world of the coldhearted who kill for fun and profit. And those evil ones are still in power. Whether or not we can shift them out of power is still up in the air. Everybody’s hanging on and doing their best to support each other while we work on that. And so it goes.

    The washer’s finished so I need to hang stuff up. Channeling Healing/Helping Energy to everybody everywhere, to your shaping. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  2. Good morning, meeses! Friday …

It is 66 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 75. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

The wheels are coming of the tRump bandwagon – may it soon be sitting broken down in a ditch with the vultures picking at the bones of those who gave their last full measure of devotion to the #RepublicanDeathCult.

The one ad that needs to run: “In November 2016, you voted to ‘shake things up.’ [pan to the carnage left by tRump’s response to the coronovirus]. Are you shaken up enough yet? Vote Biden-Harris.”

Busy day here STILL. I hope I am not deluding myself that this is not some sort of new normal – I desperately need a slower pace.

    See all y’all later!

  3. Good morning, 61 and partly sunny in Bellingham. I see the doc this morning for a blood pressure checkup, so I hope the new med is doing it’s job for me. My BP was too high at the last visit and given a long night of tRump angst I suspect it will be again today too.

Our son was in Seattle yesterday donating blood for another Covid immunity study at the Virology Lab. He learned more re his antibody results from last time and why he was invited back so that was interesting. No answers yet re if or when his sense of taste and smell will recover though. Due to complications with coumadin he decided not to be part of the plasma study, but as long as his blood is useful for the lab’s immunity studies he’ll participate.

Time to find some coffee and get going. My best wishes to all.

    • Princesspat! Your son still hasn’t regained his sense of taste and smell? I hadn’t realized that. I’ve read, however, that most people do regain it in time. Let’s hope it’s the same for him.

  4. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

It is 68 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 86. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast.

Sounds like Congress and Mark Meadows, tRump gateway, are at an impasse for extending benefits to the unemployed. I hope no businesses fall for the disinformation that they will not have any payroll tax liability if they don’t take payroll taxes out of peoples paychecks should tRump sign an executive order suspending payroll taxes. The order cannot by law eliminate the liability to pay the taxes, he can only declare that they don’t have to be taken out; only Congress can change the liability. So if you don’t take the taxes out, you still owe the money – what a nightmare that would be! There is also some question about whether he can just “extend” unemployment benefits that have expired – he does not have a checkbook, it is Congress’ checkbook. He could in theory declare a moratorium on evictions but that does not solve the problem of paying the rent – which will still be due – and has no money for landlords who need it to survive (they have bills too). I suspect that tRump is simply declaring that he will do those things realizing that low information voters will think he did it. He clearly wants to put the blame on “Congress” and it belongs to one half of Congress, the cowardly Senate Republicans. I do wonder if there is anyone left who believes anything tRump is saying.

News reports have Whitmer visiting Joe Biden. What a nightmare selection that would be! A governor in a purple state who has not even completed one full term being elevated to the Vice Presidency? Whitmer is no Palin (she has a brain) but the parallels are impossible to miss. Go bold, Joe, pick Kamala Harris and make a statement to Democrats – the future of our party is a multi-racial California woman, not an untested white woman from a rustbelt state that is not even reliably Democratic. It will not give him Michigan nor any other state in the Midwest. It would just be dumb.

    See all y’all later!

  5. Saturday Meese. 65 here in Kingston NY going up to 83.
It’s going to be a lovely day.
    Puerto Rico

  6. I had to take a nap yesterday, was just so sleepy. Slept semi-well last night — my watch says 7.5 hours. Agenda for today: groceries, and….. that’s all I can think of. I could always clean house.

  7. It’s 75 already and heading for mid 90s, heat index one side or the other of 100. Overcast but supposed to clear off this morning. Not nearly as overcast as yesterday. We only got 10.75 KWHs bringing the m-t-d to 130.9 – we’re still on track but that didn’t help any.

It’s a day. Evil ones still being evil. Puppies & kittens still warming hearts. (Even when they trip you up and dang-near kill you, liddle bastids.) Holding the Good Thought for more than puppies and kittens and other babies to warm hearts. Like money, revenue, to buy food & pay rent & utilities for those who need it. & food, housing, & utilities available to buy. And somehow staying safe from COVID19 (and other contagious diseases). And working up from there/that good foundation.

    I need to close up the house and go grill breakfast sausages. Yes, grill. I’m not turning the oven on until it cools down again. But I wanted to check in before I got too busy and it got too late. Channeling Healing/Helping Energy to everybody everywhere, to your shaping. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  8. Good morning, 58 and cloudy in Bellingham. Lisa and Ryan are here for the weekend, and it’s so nice to be with them. Rain changed our dinner plans last night, and the family is deciding where they will get less wet hiking today. We’ll all have dinner at our son’s house tonight, indoors or our, rain or shine. I’m making an old fav bacon and blue cheese potato salad so I’ll be cozy in the kitchen regardless.

My Doc appointment was interesting yesterday. Dr. B’s brother is a doc in Germany so he reads the European medical news and papers because that info is less influenced by politics. He is concerned with how the Covid virus mutates and what that means for a vaccine and for treatment. He is not optimistic re getting a vaccine anytime soon, so I appreciated his good advice re how to live life while waiting. The new blood pressure med is doing it’s job for me so that’s a relief.

Time to join Lisa for coffee and breakfast. My best wishes to all on this rainy morning.

  9. Good Saturday morning, Meese! I’ve now let another morning slip away from me. It was overcast when I got up and it’s overcast now. It never got around to raining yesterday, although it looked as if it wanted to. Right now the temp. in Ashburn is 74 F., going up to 86 F. So August wears on.

My late father would have been 98 today. It’s funny how people live in one’s mind. The day doesn’t pass without my thinking of him and of my late mother.

Woke up late owing to a disturbed night and therefore did not make the carrot bran muffins I had planned to make. I suppose that project will have to wait until Monday morning now, because nothing must interfere with Dearly’s beloved traditional Sunday breakfast!

Forget whether I mentioned that Monty, who used to be an overweight 42 pounds, now weighs 33.8. I’ve substituted baby carrots and bits of tart apple for the high-carb biscuits he used to eat, and limited his consumption of kibble. If only I could do that for myself! Looking back to February 29, I can see that I’ve now gained 3-4 quarantine pounds. It’s a different weight every day.

I’m still powerfully outraged by the assault on the USPS and the deliberate slowdown of the mail. It’s wrong to wish ill health on someone, but one has to ask oneself why an evil, bloated person who lives on diet Coke and “hamberders” doesn’t drop dead. It has been speculated elsewhere that both he and Tuppence have “plasma boys” whose blood is requisitioned when either shows the slightest sign of COVID. That’s a vampirish thought!

Well, clearly (wry smile), I have nothing of importance to say so I’ll leave it at that for now. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!
