Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.
Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).
The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.
So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?
…
NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool, shown here with 3 pages of comments available.

I got 3 donations yesterday, I’m up to $2,311 raised. Hoping I can get up to $2,500. Did my walk/run this morning, 5 1-minute segments, and 1 for 45 seconds. Watching the news & Le Tour. Yesterday was a time trial up a mountain. Yep, on the day before the last stage they did a time trial up a friggin’ mountain. And the guy in 2nd had a brilliant day — and he’s in yellow today. There’s only 3 Americans this year, the 2 young ones had really outstanding first Tours. And the sprinter’s jersey went to a different guy than the one who’s won for the past 8 or so years. There was a lot of drama in that race. Anyway, today: Le Tour, church, cooking, tea.
It’s 51 heading for 81 and sunny at least at the moment. We generated 14 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d’s at 233 so not great but truckin’ along. One of the hippy-dippy phrases of my youth – “Keep On Truckin'” – I did, I do, and as long as I’m breathing I’ll continue. As will the rest of us decent people. (Deplorables are proud of being deplorable. Decent people don’t understand even the thought that they should be proud of doing their duty. It’s “just what you do”. So very telling, that difference.)
I’ve most of my chores done. About to head over to Dee’s Sunday Sermon. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}
Just posted
Good Sunday morning, Meese, on this sad anniversary of Hurricane Maria’s devastating blow to Puerto Rico. Have had a busy morning here as Sundays involve cooking a special breakfast. There’s a beef stew simmering in the slow cooker, because today is so much like an autumn day I count it as fall even before the equinox.
At present it’s 62 F. in Ashburn, after a morning low of 39 F. Our high will be 67 F. I’m going to make an apple-walnut cake for dessert an hour before dinner so it’ll still be warm for dessert.
Like everyone else I’m wondering what to do about McTurtle and his blatant “make it up as I go along” behavior. I don’t know WHY everything goes well for the criminal in the White House and the turtle on the hill, but it’s one more argument for not believing in God. The wicked are prospering and everyone else is suffering.
Well, on that cheery thought I’ll get back to work on my many chores. I hate housework.
Wishing a peaceful, quiet Sunday to all at the Pond and the Democrats beyond.
Good morning, 62, clean air and sunshine in Bellingham. Fires are still burning in the PNW but recent rain and high winds are making life here feel less apocalyptic. I’m slow to start my day because I started reading the new Louise Penny book yesterday afternoon and decided to just finish it after going to bed. So I spent most of the night in Paris with Gamache and his family :) I’ve really enjoyed reading the series.
All the Devils Are Here
I’m going to gather my gardening gear go outside for the rest of the day. Best wishes to all.
Good morning, meeses! Monday …
It is 52 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 72. Sunny skies are in the forecast. A perfect day, weatherwise!
Joe Biden asking Senate Republicans to “follow their consciences” is EXACTLY what makes me angry about Joe Biden. Unless he is playing 11th dimension chess and is boxing his opponents king into a corner (unlikely, in my opinion), he fails to understand that there are no honorable Republicans. They have joined the Trump Cult because they know that the only way the Republican Party survives is by destroying democracy – their party can’t win fairly in a contest of ideas and they are desperate to keep power.
I have decided on my strategy to survive the SCOTUS shitshow – I will count on a woke Democratic Party, one that does not lionize the Supreme Court, to fix the problem when they take back power. The Republican’s behaviour in the SCOTUS battle should galvanize support for killing the filibuster and getting meaningful reform done in the next Congress – including expanding the entire federal court system to dilute the Russian seats and adding DC as a state to give us two Democratic Senators to dilute the power of the Confederate states.
I filled out my absentee ballot yesterday and will drop it off at the city clerk’s office today when I am out running errands. Mail from the Madison area goes to Milwaukee sorting stations and then returns here – that is simply too much extra time spent in Louis DeJoy’s ratfkable Postal Service.
See all y’all later!
Glad you’re dropping the ballot off at the city clerk’s office, Jan. I’m going to take a photo of my ballot, just as I did last time. I wore all white to vote for Hillary.
Nancy has some “options” up her sleeve. I hope she uses them to forestall Cheeto Face’s Supreme Court justice pick.
If it goes through I want extra justices on the court, picked by Biden. Kavanaugh should be impeached and replaced, then a new justice added—perhaps Merrick Garland. There have been as few as five justices on the Supreme Court and as many as 10. Wish we could get Gorsucks out of his stolen seat too.
And yes to DC becoming a state! It has 700,000 residents. Wyoming has 600,000.
I have a photo of my ballot that includes my vote for Kamala! It is not for her as President – this time – but it is still very exciting.
We can’t impeach Kavanaugh – that takes 66 Senate votes, something we will never have. But I will settle for him being in the minority, pounding his tiny beer-soaked fists in frustration that his opinions matter not a whit. Obviously we need an odd number for tie breaking so I am focusing on the magical number 13. We add 4 new justices who care about the rule of law and we will have a 7 to 6 majority. Still thin but Clarence Thomas can’t live forever so that would fairly soon be 9 to 5.
We don’t need to package DC Statehood in with the court changes, it should stand on its own, but it is simply another example of how we right an egregious wrong when we kill the filibuster.
Monday Meese 36 here in Kingston NY going up to 64. Had frost on my car.

Good Monday morning, Moosekind! It’s a cool, brilliant day here in Ashburn, the last of our autumn days for a while. Tomorrow it’ll start warming up. Right now it’s 42 delicious degrees F., going up to 67 F. later. We have a clear blue sky and golden sunshine gilding the top of the woods across the way.
This will be a morning of paperwork. Thank GODDESS I don’t have to go anywhere today. Will this be the day I mop the bathroom floor? Stay tuned. I vacuumed it on Saturday but lost my cleaning mojo. Today I’ll try again. I loathe housework.
McTurtle is the most evil person to appear on the political scene since Andrew Jackson. Cheeto-Faced Thing is evil, of course, but his dementia prevents his thinking up Machiavellian strategies. Barr-Barr the Effalunt is right behind McTurtle and Cheeto Face.
Too depressing. I’ll vote, write postcards, and do whatever I can do to help the Democrats. Today I’ll call Kaine and Warner to tell them Dearly and I do not want a SC nomination until the 46th president is inaugurated.
Last prediction I saw was that Biden will win in a tidal wave. Did you see or hear about the Trumpanzees harassing early voters in Virginia? I’ve already thought up some speeches if they try it with me: “O, Accursed of Allah, thy father was a camel driver, thy mother a concubine! Thou shalt dine on the bones of broiled rats and drink from the poisoned rivers in Michigan!” and “Listen, thou illegitimate offspring of a diseased camel, VOETSAK!” Because hardly anyone, certainly no Trumpanzees, outside South Africa, knows what “voetsak” means, I won’t be arrested for profanity in public.
Well, that’s quite enough from me today. Hope everyone at the Pond will have a better day than she expected. Ansi-soit-il.
We do not want this intention: “I do not want a SC nomination until the 46th president is inaugurated.”
I see a scenario where tRump loses and resigns so that Pence can pardon him for the Federal offenses, which are egregious. So Joe Biden could easily be #47. It is best to not assign a number to the next president until Inauguration Day. :)
Good point, Jan!
It’s hard for me to envision Thing resigning, however. Resigning is for “losers,” in his mind.
Good morning! Getting my flu shot today, work has a plan to keep us distant. Otherwise, just working. yesterday’s Tour finish was epic. And I cooked risotto with mushrooms & onions for lunch for the week, made tea and overnight oats for the week…. Pretty productive day. We’re supposed to get rain off & on from tropical storm Beta; people on Galveston island are evacuating because of the storm surge. I hope the flooding isn’t too bad.
Mornin’ All. It’s 55 heading for 80 and mostly sunny at the moment. Rain’ll move in tonight. Along with highs in the 60s. Tomorrow and Wednesday will probably be first wood fires of the season. We generated 14.2 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d is 247 – we’ll at least top the 2.5K system’s 250 today. With only 10 days left in the month, counting today, it’s exceedingly unlikely we’ll manage to reach 400 but 300 is well within reach.
My son came by and brought me fresh produce yesterday. We had a nice visit through the front room window. I did have to open the slider a little and hand him some money – he’d spent more than I gave him last time and while he didn’t ask for it, he’s working hard for his money – but we were careful. And I washed my hands after he left. (Gave him a ginger ale, too, as I have plenty. LOL)
As to everything else and everybody else – both nothing new under the sun and we’ll keep on keepin’ on. I wish there was more I could do. But there isn’t. Hold the Good Thought for Amelia. She’s gonna try to get up the energy and focus to deal with Verizon. Since she starts to panic every time she even thinks of calling them, as much in the way of Energy sent her direction would be good. Other folks also need Good Thoughts of course. In this as in everything else, do what you can without harming yourself. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}
Good morning, 57 and partly sunny. Rain is forcaste for the rest of the week so I hope we’ll finish cleaning and storing the summer patio furnishings today. We got a good start yesterday, but then we got distracted. RonK cooked a green chili stew for supper and I just did a little of this and that. The patio rug is washed and dried so the umbrellas are next and then we’ll be ready for rain.
Best wishes to all as we find our way through another day.
Tuesday Meese. 36 degrees here in Kingston NY going up to 71.

Good morning, meeses! Tuesday, the first day of Autumn …
It is 59 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 75. Sunny skies are in the forecast.
I spent more time than I should have on Twitter yesterday, reading the “rationale” being put forward to justify nomination hearings and confirmation of a Supreme Court justice 40 days before an election that has a strong chance to reject the very people who are rushing this thing through. What it boils down to is “Because They Can.” Plain and simple, this benefits the Republicans, they can do this and so they will. There is no sense agonizing over it – we need to press on and next year we will try to convince Senator Diane Feinstein that the filibuster is only in place because Senate Democrats are self-immolating and that the very second Republicans regain power, they will eliminate it. We can make great progress and deliver on our promises to the people and increase our majority or we can let the Republicans block progress, point to our uselessness to regain power and wait for them to destroy whatever is left after 4 years of ratfking.
I need to refocus on staging work projects that have a September deadline – there is only one weekend left in September and I need to be ready to hit the ground running on Saturday.
See all y’all later!
Cool, rainy morning — I made it to 7 running segments! My Democratic club is having the first of 2 endorsement meetings for local races tonight. Trying to reconfigure my schedule so I can stop before 5. At least I don’t have to drive anywhere. There is major flooding in Houston — local news reported on several water rescues; and the storm is supposed to stay there till tomorrow.
Yikes, another, stay safe! Is your Democratic club meeting a Zoom meeting?
Zoom and FB Live. I hadn’t been checking my e-mail, so I need to read up on voting procedures. We’re only getting light rain here in Austin. I feel bad for people in southeast Texas, getting flooded again.
Happy/Blessed Mabon, Meeses. At 64 it’s considerably warmer than it was supposed to be right now. Widget’s still saying we’re only going to 67 so a fire this evening is still very likely – 1st fire of the winter season on Mabon! Widget also says rain all day. I suppose this heavy mist would pass for rain. It’s at least damping the dust. Yesterday we generated 12.6 KWHs (m-t-d 259) but we’ll be lucky to get half that today. But we have generated more than the 2.5K system did in 2014 so that much is good.
My extended family/circle of loved ones aren’t doing really well – both health and finances – but they’re mostly slogging along. Amelia isn’t exactly, more like hanging on to a floating spar and praying she’ll see land soon. (She didn’t managed to call Verizon yesterday. Hold the Good Thought for today.) We keep on keepin’ on.
I’ve got cocoa-peanut butter muffins in the oven I need to tend to. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}
