Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: November 1st

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool, shown here with 3 pages of comments available.

    Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

    Morning low of 34 degrees in Madison WI with an expected daytime high of 37. Partly cloudy skies are in the forecast.

    Have a great day, all y’alls!!

    Don’t forget to set your clocks back an hour. Daylight Saving Time ends at 2am Sunday morning.

    • Definitely something to smile about. And a 3-pointer. Hopefully a good omen. WH, Congress, Courts? or at least WH, Senate, House – which will give us the authority to do something about the Courts. ????????????

  2. Puerto Rico

  3. Good morning. Did like the extra hour of sleep but I will miss the evening sun until next spring. I know I’m in the minority on that, but I hate this time of year, I love the later days. Anyway, today’s agenda: church, making tea & next week’s lunch, if I get done early enough an evening walk before it gets dark.

  4. Good cold gray Sunday morning, Moosekind! Breakfast has been had, Dearly is watching F1, and I’m about to drink my coffee. I can no longer be bothered with F1, as I may have mentioned before, because I already know who will win the top three spots and in which order. It’s boring to watch something so predictable.

    The sky is so dark it looks as if it’s about to rain any minute—now that I no longer care! Right now in Ashburn it’s 49 F., going up to 55 F.

    Wonder what the results of Puerto Rico’s bid to join the rest of us will be this time. I actually hope they vote to join. I know Dee says they’re afraid of losing their Boricua culture, but under a Biden administration PR and Vieques would be so much better off. And haven’t the Cubans in Miami retained a great deal of their culture? We shall see. I rejoice at the idea of two more senators from PR and two more from the state of DC, although they’d probably cancel each other out.

    Just had to stop writing this to take Monty out, and discovered the cold front is here, with blowing wind and cold rain.

    I managed to rework Chapter 8 a bit and completely cut out the really juicy part before I posted it to the website. I’ll restore the juicy bit before I send the completed book to the publisher.

    Not much to add except that I’m worried that Florida won’t go our way, worried about the Ocean City visit, worried that our family won’t be together for Thanksgiving, even though both our son’s live within an hour’s drive from here. My friends with freezers are stocking up in advance of another lockdown but our wretched freezer consists of one drawer. Will have to think of something.

    Wishing all at the Pond a good day. It’s a nice day to stay at home by the fire!

  5. I kept meaning to post this. I did not realize until a few days ago that we were in a Mercury Retrograde – with Mercury going direct on Election Day!

    October 14 – November 3: in Scorpio and Libra Mercury retrograde in Scorpio will determine us to be more expressive and bold. Although this event will positively influence our life, you need to know that the period of retrogradation can also cause many headaches. Mercury retrograde in Libra can bring enough agitation, sarcasm, and nervousness with special influence on drawing wrong conclusions that we may regret later on. During this period, there is a strong fight between a forced detached attitude and a strong introspection tendency that can become dangerous. It is a period of difficulties in communication, impatience, and thoughts focused on accomplishing personal goals. It is a time of redefining personal behavior.

    I think that the communication problems and impatience are not helping our demeanors but the clearing of the retrograde should be positive. I hope it is positive for us and not the deplorables!!

  6. Happy Samhain Week! It’s 40 going to 57 and sunny so far today. We wrapped up October with 260 KWHs so within the 2nd to 5th place cluster. Just barely, but in there at 4th place. For some reason the PV system isn’t transmitting data to my computer this morning. (They may be doing an update due to the time change or something. I’ll report it if I don’t start getting data in the next few hours.) But it’s on.

    As election day gets nearer the fundraising emails get more frantic. I’m deleting as they come in just so I won’t have a humongous mass to delete afterwards. I’ve got my automatic donations set up. The rest of my money is going to people I know in need of food or rent or stuff like that. Our team does seem to be doing some solid GOTV and that’s good. I don’t have much hope for AR. Yeah our R elected officials are Deplorable which hurts everybody, but as long as the AR Deplorables waving the traitor flag keep being convinced they’re hurting BIPOC & LBGTQ folks most…sigh. Of our 6, Joyce Elliott has the best shot. Holding the Good Thought. She would be a moral victory as well as a political one.

    New month. Same old bills – and same old too little or lack of revenue for too many folks. A win on Tuesday isn’t going to keep these folks housed or fed without “charitable” help for this month or next month or the month after or even after that. If we grand-slam, Blue Wave win it will still be March before any relief can get to anybody. But if we win, there will be hope to hang onto for that quarter turning of the Wheel. And sometimes hope is enough to hang onto.

    I’ve got some of my Sunday chores done but my back is bothering me so I’m putting off the rest for a bit. Heading over to DK for #BlackMusicSunday. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  7. Good morning, 41 and mostly sunny in Bellingham. Maggie and Milo are sleepy small dogs this morning so I’ve kept dozing along with them. I had hoped to wake up to see the full moon again but the memory of yesterday morning lingers so that’s ok.

    Election angst woke me up in the night so I found a book and author interview channel on YouTube and fell into fantasy. The author interviews with Jim Butcher (Dresden Files), Brandon Sanderson (Wheel of Time and Radiance series) and Steven Erickson (Malazan series) were fascinating. I drifted in and out of sleep listening to them talk about their craft and the characters they have created.

    Time to take the dogs out and fine another cup of coffee. Best wishes to all as the countdown clock ticks on!

  8. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

    It is 27 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 50. Sunny skies are in the forecast. The rest of the week will be in the mid to upper 60s – our “All Halloween Summer” (a more politically correct term for “Indian Summer”, courtesy of Shakespeare).

    Well, here we are one day before the most momentous election in our lifetimes. Not because of who we will elect – Joe Biden is a pretty ordinary white male in the tradition of ordinary white males who have been presidents – but what we will reject: the Republican Party’s vision of America, a mean-spirited, whites only, males only, anti-democracy country whose entire purpose is to ensure that the wealthy stay in power and have unfettered use of our planet’s resources.

    Tomorrow is really less “Election Day” than “Vote Tallying Day” this year with 93 million people having already voted either by mail (fingers crossed!) or early in-person. But tomorrow will be the big reveal for the states who are allowed to count early (Wisconsin isn’t) and who will have a pretty good total by the time their polls close – and later into the night and over the next few days for the rest. I am trying to ignore the “tRump will declare himself the winner when the first pro-tRump totals are announced” because tRump will do what tRump will do. Any news organization who gives him airtime or headlines to make that announcement should be shunned forever. The votes will be announced as they are counted, the states will have to canvass the voting sites, the states will certify the totals and the official votes won’t be available for several weeks. The only date that is a firm deadline is December 14, 2020 when the Electoral Freaking College casts their votes for president.

    I have this ready to embed in our Welcomings post when the election is called for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.

    I fervently hope I can use it.

    See all y’all later!

  9. Monday Meese. 35 going up to 39 here in Kingston NY with light snow expected.

    Puerto Rico

    • Oh, Dee, that is SO SAD! It blows my mind when young people die of it. I’m not surprised when people my age pop their clogs.

      I hate this plague year.

  10. Good morning. Got my pasta salad made yesterday, but it took longer than I planned, so I didn’t get in a walk. And I had a terrible night’s “sleep”. I even got up around 1am & took a muscle relaxer — and still couldn’t sleep. Probably going to log out of work early. Ugh.

    • {{{anotherdemocrat}}} getting used to time change is hard. Healing Energy & moar {{{HUGS}}}

  11. Good Monday morning, Moosekind! The blustery winds have blown away the early morning cloud cover, leaving the beautiful sight of red-gold trees against a pale blue sky, with wisps of white cloud here and there. Winds will blow from 25 to 35 miles per hour, which makes the prospect of a walk very unpleasant. Right now in Ashburn it’s 39 F., on its way up to 46 F. I’m sorry for those of you having snow!

    At least tomorrow will be sunny and warmer for standing outside handing out ballots for 3 and 1/2 hours. Need to get stuff done today, but will not say what as I don’t seem to get it done if I mention it!

    Hoping for the best, of course, but still terribly nervous. Wishing a nice, quiet day to all at the Pond.

  12. Just before dawn it was 29, 35 now and heading for 62. It’s sunny again which is nice. My PV system didn’t transmit data the whole of yesterday but it’s back online this morning and showing we generated 8.9 KWHs. The never-made meet-or-beat target is 200 but the more realistic target is 185. November and December are months that can but usually don’t generate as much electricity as I use in a month. We shall see what we shall see.

    I don’t know if I’m even going to be online tomorrow night. If I am, I certainly won’t be following any election returns. Maybe do a “status check” before I go to bed. Otherwise, no. I get nauseous thinking about it. And my heart starts fluttering. Which it is at the moment. So I’ll go do something else to get it back under control. Closer to home worries – folks in my friend/fam circle with more immediate needs than any election will be able to address. So I’ll focus on their health and well-being. This election cycle is almost over. Thank Goddess. Praying for the Life-Affirming outcome. If we get it, then we can get to work – cleaning the Augean stables. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  13. Good morning, 39 and partly sunny in Bellingham. Milo and Maggie were a good antidote for tRump stress yesterday and after they left I was outdoors for awhile. I got too cold to stay long so now I’m thinking about how to create a warm and dry outdoor resting spot. I hope/think the election will mean tRump’s days are numbered but the transition will be fraught. And seeing Ava’s face as she asked, “…..what will we do if he wins again” makes me know I need to find some ways to help us all cope. We usually gather in the dining room in the winter but with covid I think we need an outdoor spot as well.

    Take care everyone.

  14. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday, Election Day 2020 …

    It is 32 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 64. Sunny skies are in the forecast. It is a perfect day to vote!

    In Wisconsin, we have Assembly elections for every seat and State Senate elections for half the seats. The Republican Destroyers are running candidates for almost every seat, even the more solidly Democratic ones, in the hopes of flipping enough seats to have a supermajority that can override Governor Evers’ vetos. If that happens, I will move – there will really be no chance for a decent life here. I have to figure out if my moving disrupts my daughter’s in-state tuition, though. If it does, I will have to wait and hope that things take a while to degrade – they didn’t in 2011 after Walker got installed, the damage was immediate and far-reaching. Fingers crossed.

    I am still hoping that Wisconsin goes to Biden – I despise being a Trump state. But the stupid runs deep here.

    Dixville Notch NH voted 5 to 0 for Biden so the first results of 2020 are in. Now, in-person voting, counting and nail-biting. Actually, not the last – I trimmed my nails yesterday. :)

    See all y’all later!

  15. Puerto Rico

  16. Good morning, Moosekind! Cold and very windy here in Ashburn. Current temp at 49 F., going up to 59 F. I have to get ready to stand outside the polls here and hand out sample ballots from 10 to 11. Our precinct captain says 3/4 of the residents here at the Home have already voted.

    See you later!
