Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: December 6th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool, shown here with 3 pages of comments available.

COUNTING DOWN THE TIME UNTIL DECENCY RETURNS …

10 Comments

  1. It’s 60 at the moment. Apparently is going to drop down to 55 shortly and stay there until about dark then do a steady decline to 30 just before daybreak tomorrow. Very overcast and gonna start raining any minute now. Which my hands definitely feel. Carpal tunnel and Raynaud’s both flaring into the painful range. So. Ibuprofen and coffee and mostly offline today. PV system is on but that’s about all I can say. We got 6.68 KWHs which brought the m-t-d to 59. I’ll be surprised if we actually get to over 60 today. sigh. Ups and downs of Life and all that.

    I’ve just about boosted everything I’ve committed myself to boosting – at least for the morning – and need to get offline. Watching our evil colonizer culture publicly do the “I want it, it’s mine” routine regarding the election is Depressing. They won’t get away with it this time. But unless we manage some serious structural change before the next try – probably with Tom Cotton – they’ll do it then. Very Depressing. So do we have a chance? Yes. Will we take it? I don’t know. We shall see. But communities – online and off – will sustain us through the dark time. They always have. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  2. Good morning, 42 and raining in Bellingham. I wasn’t going to sew gifts this Christmas but covid shopping isn’t going well, so I’m sewing. I’ve got all the materials and the family appreciates everything I make so I need to find the energy to just get busy! I have a set of Christmas napkins and 2 table cloths cut and ready to hem for my dil. And I can make 3 pillows for our daughter’s living room without going anywhere. I tried to sew to much last year, but I should be able to complete this list.

    My mind seems to be taking a holiday from reading the news. My eyes glaze over when I try to read about the tRump outrage of the day, the covid news scares me so I’m avoiding knowing more, and I can’t handle reading criticism re Biden’s selection of people to help him govern this messy country. So what if I’m temporarily uninformed :)

    Best wishes to all.

  3. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

    It is 30 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 36. Snow expected off and on all day – it looks like we got about 3 inches overnight. All my errands were done yesterday so we can hunker down and watch sporting events on TV.

    Headline in the Madison paper: “More rejection for Trump”. The Milwaukee paper was less personal, calling it a rejection of the Texas lawsuit. The tRump campaign also lost in Circuit Court here for their suit to throw out the absentee ballots from Dane County and Milwaukee County. That was appealed to our Supreme Court which signaled last week that they would deny the claim but since then who knows how much pressure they have gotten. The hearing is at noon today and is being live streamed at WisEye.org. The good news is that if our Supreme Court decides to disenfranchise the voters in blue counties in service to their political leader, those 10 electoral votes won’t change the national election; Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will still have 296 votes and room to spare. I don’t think there are any other pending lawsuits around the country before the Electoral College meets on Monday. I hope that Chief Justice Patience Roggensack votes to disenfranchise us (as part of the minority opinion) – it will make a nice ad in 2023 when she is up for re-election.

    The Pfizer vaccine has been approved by our FDA! I wish the director had defied tRump and waited until today which is when he wanted to finish the process. I guess he wants to be remembered as the Trump FDA Chief for the rest of his life instead of the United States FDA Chief. I don’t know if FDA director is one of those things that changes with each administration or if it is one that spans administrations like Fed chairman and the other quasi-governmental units. That he was willing to bow to pressure is disqualifying. Twelve hours would not have meant a lot in terms of the vaccine rollout but that twelve hours will seed doubt in the minds of those who don’t trust tRump or his malAdministration to do the right thing.

    I hope the “Andrew Cuomo for Attorney General” is something being pushed by Andrew Cuomo and has no basis in fact. Even as a rumor it is disturbing – why would anyone anywhere ever think that would be a good idea? I prefer Sally Yates for a lot of reasons and I hope they make that decision soon.

    I was very busy yesterday and got a lot of accounting work done in preparation for year end. I still need to do a dry run on taxes to make sure that there is not something I should be buying/paying for in 2020 versus 2021. There are still 3 weeks left in 2020 but I don’t want to get to December 28th and be in panic mode for 4 days.

    See all y’all later!

  4. Saturday Meese. 33 going up to 43 with rain here in Kingston NY.
    Puerto Rico

    They will teach the history of Puerto Rico in the public schools of the state of Connecticut

  5. Good Saturday morning, Meese, and good Goddess, it’s already twenty to 9!

    Outside we have Brigadoon again in Ashburn. The screened porch is spangled with fog-beads, but They say the clouds will dissipate and our current chilly 37 F. will rise to 61 F.

    The new hearing aids make everything sound VERY LOUD. The audiologist assured me that in a couple of weeks the dear old brain will get used to them, just as the brain got used to monovision after I had Lasik surgery. Getting used to monovision only took a couple of days, however. Every time I strike a key on the keyboard the resulting clicks are so loud it’s driving me crazy. (First-world problem.)

    Have a delightful day planned: changing the sheets on the bed, working on the Christmas newsletter, perhaps working on Chapter 9, experimenting with a new conversion app to see whether I can retrieve WordPerfect files from the 1990s. A walk is definitely on the list for today.

    Have been looking at a portable rowing machine but after reading the reviews, I’m feeling put off. I should use the free weights I already have and learn to use the resistance bands before I add another object to this already crammed flat. Rowing on a rowing machine is my favorite form of exercise after walking, but the new gym in the new clubhouse, which is steps away from the front door of this building, probably won’t have one. The club house is slated to open next month.

    We have four cases of Covid in Independent Living and five cases among staff members. I trust they are quarantining. The menus for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day were delivered yesterday, but after looking at them I know I can do better than that!

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  6. Good morning. We’re back to warm weather here — highs in the 80s. I don’t need to cook this weekend, I might make a small batch of my lunch dish so I don’t have to cook next weekend for the short workweek of Christmas. Watching the news, and the FDA announcement got me all misty-eyed with all the science talk.

  7. A very gray and chilly day – 36 at the moment going up to 43 and I’m truly surprised the PV system is even on. I’m needing lights on to clearly see the keys on the keyboard. They say snow tomorrow. We shall see. We actually did get over 1 KWH yesterday and the m-t-d of 60.6 is better than I expected. Not on track for even usage but better than I expected. Today looks to be more of the same. Or rather less of the same. We shall see.

    The current situation with Rs and Courts sort of reminds me of a bomb Jimmy Carter got slammed for preferring. It killed people but left buildings/structures in tact and useful. The Rs definitely want to kill people but they don’t really want a civil war for all their violent rhetoric. (That’s the Rs in power – the base does because they haven’t a clue what real civil war means.) They want the structure of government and society to be intact for them once they’ve killed or subjugated the rest of us. So the Courts are upholding law. We did what I said way back when that we’d have to – won the election by so much they couldn’t steal it. What they are doing now would have worked if neither candidate had over 50% of the vote and were within a percentage point of each other. So. We have to keep getting out the vote at the ground level as we secure the voting process at the government level.

    I used to like Saturdays. I’ve gotten over it. LOL. But it’s still a day and we’re still here. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  8. Good morning, 34 and foggy in Bellingham. I was awake in the night so I’m slow this morning. My knees are not cooperating with my Christmas lists this year and accepting that reality is a struggle for me. My BCH leg can’t support full weight and the other knee is unstable so even careful hobbling around is difficult. Oh well, our covid christmas plans are all subject to change this year so I’ll just do what I can and let the rest go.
    Best wishes to all.

    • {{{princesspat}}} – Healing Energy. Sometimes “letting go” of one plan and substituting another is the lesson of the day. Doing what you can and letting the rest go is a good thing. moar {{{HUGS}}
