Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: December 27th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool, shown here with 3 pages of comments available.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

Morning low of 19 degrees in Madison WI with an expected daytime high of 32. Light snow is possible.

Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Sunday Meese. 38 degrees here in Kingston NY, with snow flurries predicted.

Got some disturbing news via Aji at her blog, that JoanMar is going through a very rough time.
See what y’all can do to help.

    • Sorry to hear this. So much pain from the horrible neglect everyone on the margins has suffered for the past 3 years and 11 months and particularly the last 9 months. I hope she gets the help she needs.

    Protest in Aguada

“No more antennas in Aguada!” Is the cry of the Goyito Muñiz Sector community in Aguada. At this moment, they are preparing for a walk and caravan to the town square to demand that the installation of an antenna from the companies T-Mobile and Innovattel be stopped.

In Aguada there are, so far, around 40 antenna towers in various parts of the town. Each tower has about 60 antennas, according to the elected mayor Christian Cortés, who is present at the demonstration

  4. As I sit here in the early morning quiet, sorting through what to read from my Sunday local ePapers (one from Madison and one from Milwaukee), may I just say:

I DO NOT WANT 2020 RETROSPECTIVES, NOT NOW, NOT EVER.

    As you were.

  5. Good morning. Got in another walk yesterday, only 1 running segment — this is what happens when you take 2 weeks off, but I’ll get back where I was. I cooked my dish for New Year’s yesterday, so today I just need to do the overnight oats and make tea. So I’ll walk again this afternoon. For now, I’m watching the news & eating my almond butter sandwich.

  6. Good Sunday morning, Moosekind. It’s a sunny day in Ashburn but rather chilly: we’re at 31 F. now, but when I woke up the temperature was 23 F. We’re going for a high today of 43 F.

Breakfast has been cooked and consumed. I don’t feel up to much because of my cold. I predict that much time will be spent asleep in either the green recliner or the brown corduroy loveseat in my office today. There’s a lot I’d like to do, though, including some writing. What I should be doing is reading numerous emails on how to market my book. I hate marketing! I always feel that’s someone else’s job. My job is writing, but I’m an Indie writer. Therefore, I write, then I must market.

I still hate the WaPo for dissing Democrats. I refuse to read today’s front section. Is it really 24 mortal days to Inauguration Day? How’re we gonna get through the next three weeks and three days?

Wishing everyone a nice, quiet Sunday with no bad news.

  7. It’s been 50 since before dawn and is just starting to inch up to our promised 60 for the day. Mostly sunny, hazy but still sunshine. A whole lot of wind. Yesterday we got just over 7 KWHs and the m-t-d is sitting right at 130. We’ve got 5 production days left in the month, including today, so we might make it to 150 after all. Maybe.

I knew things had to be bad for JoanMar when she tagged into one of Aji’s #HelpFolksLive2020 threads. Yeah, a lot of bad. No income for about 6 months. All I can do right now is boost stuff. I’m hoping in another week I’ll be able to help a little. As she used to say during the fundraising to build Aji’s home “many a mickle makes a muckle” – so Holding the Good Thought we can get her enough “mickles” to do the job.

Other folks I know are also in trouble – these are folks at $600 would help. Not for long, but for that unexpected expense, that Rx with the jacked price, that car repair, that “replace the food lost to power outage” – those kinds of things that overdraw the bank or make a rent or utility payment late (and add fees to an already too big payment). For those $600 would be a blessing. And for those folks I’ll try to find at least one “mickle” as well.

    Rotten night. Even using the new decongestant spray (I wish people designing these nifty new “security” bottles would spare a thought, just one, for those of us who have problems with our hands) I had a couple of apnea episodes plus coughed hard enough to hurt my chest. But it’s daylight now and I’m upright so doing better. I’ve got most of my Sunday chores done and can do the rest to the music on Dee’s diary. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

    • Sorry about your rotten night, bfitz dear! I hope Sunday night’s sleep was better. The day’s going to come when I have to sleep sitting up, I realize.

      • Sunday night was better, thank you. My back won’t let me sleep sitting up or I’d invest in a “recliner” that would let me do it. Because yes, I breathe better when I’m upright. As it is, sleeping on a bed wedge is as close as I can get. As to chairs in my house, I have to get up and move every half hour or so because otherwise my back says very nasty things to me.

  8. Good day, 43 and raining in Bellingham. Well, looks like today is nearly over and I’m nearly ready to face it! I’ve had to listen to my legs and just rest but between music, books, and computer magic I have not been bored. We’re going to our sons house for a taco supper tonight so that will be fun. I may get some laundry done and the Christmas Spode put away but that’s TBD.

    Best wishes to all.

  9. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

It is 25 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 27, sunny skies are in the forecast.

The coronavirus relief and Omnibus federal spending bill has been signed and unemployment payments will resume after a lapse. From what I read, some people will have to reapply for benefits because of the petulant toddler in the White House. We are 8 days away from the Georgia election, 9 days away from certification of the Electoral College and 23 days away from the beginning of the Biden-Harris administration. Fortunately, because the bill was signed, we won’t begin by dealing with the aftermath of a government shutdown and a surge of job losses and evictions. I am still not sure how 74 million people would choose trumpian chaos over the stability Joe Biden will bring to government. Maybe they like the adrenaline rush from wondering each day if your life will end because an incompetent malignant narcissist has the power to destroy everything you hold dear?

We watched the new Wonder Woman movie yesterday! I discovered I had a free trial for HBOMax available to me and loaded the app on my iPad after discovering that “all the circuits were busy” on the browser-based streaming I have available when I turn my TV into a large sized computer monitor. Anyway, it was an entertaining movie and a nice break from Realworldia.

I have a busy day today as we are running out of 2020 days to do certain accounting activities (the cash-based transactions) and I have to make sure that I am poised to hit the ground running project-wise when 2021 starts on Friday. I have a new calendar to put on the wall and the hopefulness that comes with that symbolism.

    See all y’all later!

  10. Monday Meese. 30 going up to a rainy 45 today here in Kingston NY.

  11. It’s 30 heading for 48 and sunny at the moment. Clouds are supposed to move in shortly and pretty much stay here through the rest of this year and the beginning of next. Not much prophecy needed to see symbology in that. It’s been a dark year and the new one is not only going to start where this one leaves off, it’s going to get worse before it can get better. But it can get better. And it will get better. Meanwhile, we generated 7 KWHs yesterday and 137’s the m-t-d. So if the clouds aren’t too heavy we still might make 150 for the month. At least we’ve already made 4 MWHs for the year.

I think my wood stove is “leaking” smoke when the fire dies down enough for the chimney to cool. Not enough to set off the smoke detector but enough to mess with my sinuses/breathing when I’m trying to sleep. As much as I do not want anybody in the house – even to the extent of using a bucket to fill the toilet tank rather than call a plumber – I need to get the chimney/stove people in to look at this. sigh. That’s money I really would like to go somewhere else. Or rather to someone else. But this has the potential to be dangerous. Not that it hasn’t been doing it all season long because it has. I just figured out the smoke was from inside and not outside when I closed all the windows – even the one in my bedroom I usually leave open 1/2″ for fresh air at night – with that last hard freeze we got. So I need to do it.

    Twitler did as much damage as he could without getting blamed for shutting down the government, signed off on the “at least it keeps the government open and gives a little grocery money to the masses” bill, then went back to golfing. I’m sure in the next 3 weeks he’ll figure out more ways to do damage but he’s got less and less clout. Even the MSM is paying less and less attention to him and have gone back to attacking Dems, overtly and covertly. Nothing new under the sun. But there is sun and for this we give thanks. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  12. Good Monday morning, Moosekind! It’s sunny and blue-skied here in Ashburnat the moment. The temperature at 11 a.m. is 44 F., on its way up to 52 F. Dearly reported that it was very cold and breezy when he took Monty outside. I hope I can find some energy to go out for even a tiny walk. Haven’t had one in days, owing to the cold outside and the cold inside my head, so my body is a bulgy sack.

Had a thought: if one cleaned up an untidy or dirty area every time one spotted it, would the house be clean in a year? I could wipe down the wall where Monty’s dog dishes are and sponge off the outside of the bedroom door (where Monty hurls himself against it when he thinks it’s time we got up from our nap). I’d use Bon Ami, which is reputedly the least abrasive cleaner. What a boring thing to say.

Other plans for the day include contemplating the latest draft of Chapter 9. I need Conor and Quentin to be cut off from the rest of the hunting party by a sudden fierce rain, the kind of squall in which Northumberland abounds, so Conor can introduce Bran to Quentin. Right now I have Conor and Quentin eating a fast lunch in a clearing but that doesn’t seem realistic in view of the time element. Bran is going to tell them the location of the horrible big boar, Obelix, who has caused damage to both crops and livestock. In gratitude the two are going to give the rest of their food to Bran. This scene is important for a chapter later in the book. H’mm. Just writing this has given me an idea as to how to deal with this scene. Yippee!

My day hath been made, hope your day goes equally well. Wishing the best to all who frequent the Pond.

  13. Good morning. Warm enough for no jacket this morning. Went into the office, dropped off finished work, picked up some more. There were only 4 people in my section, still I’m glad to be home. The Dr. Who episodes today are all with a character I don’t like, so I’m watching the Science Channel in between calls.

  14. Good morning, 45 and foggy in Bellingham and so far no rain. It’s still very wet outside though. We enjoyed dinner at our son’s house last night and Heidi was pleased we were there. She’s getting old faster now and her back legs are failing so it’s always good to see her tail wag.
Speaking of legs, mine are old too, but they feel much better this morning so I should be able to do more today.

    Best wishes to all.

  15. Good morning. Didn’t get my walk in yesterday, really must today while it’s warm & sunny. Although the cedar count is very, very high — basically 30,000 grains per cubic meter. Ugh. There’s a front coming, supposed to be rain tomorrow. And it’s supposed to get cold, the weather people are very excited that it could snow. That would be cool, but I doubt it will. Watching Dr. Who & getting ready for work.

  16. Tuesday Meese. 34 here in Kingston NY, light snow showers this morning.

    Puerto Rico

  17. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

It is 12 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 27. Snow starting this afternoon and not expected to end before it leaves 4-6 inches of the fluffy white. This will not even be the BIG STORM this week – that will be arriving on Friday!

I am going to skip the morning news – I have too much to do this morning – and will catch up via Twitter later. I got two things done and have one more to go. It will be interesting to watch tRump spin the NDAA veto override and even more interesting to see what happens with the $2,000 the House passed with 2/3rds vote. The CASH Act appears to include payments for adult children dependents (the CARES Act was only for children up to age 17) which would be a nice year end bonus for me and my daughter

    See all y’all later!

    • That WOULD be nice, Jan! My unemployed Younger Son could certainly use an infusion of cash. DIL has a very good job with the government, so at least they have that. I’d have been biting my nails if the government had shut down, but luckily a shutdown seems to have been averted.

  18. Good Tuesday morning, Meese! The sky was loaded with menacing-looking gray clouds when we woke up at 7 this morning, but at half-past nine it’s another beautiful day with sunlight gilding the woods and the blue sky wearing little puffs of white cloud here and there. Truly a day to rejoice in, for tomorrow it’s supposed to rain. Right now in Ashburn it’s 37 F., going up to a whopping 39 F.

It’s the end of the year so I’m being bombarded by pleas for money by various organizations. I spent it all at Christmas! In fact, although I normally don’t do such things, I started a little fundraiser on FB early in the month and helped raise $500 for Loudoun County Hunger Relief. I’m happy about that. If the gummint really does send out stimulus checks, I’ll have some cash to spare.

Today I have a 2 p.m. appointment to check on my hearing aids. They no longer sound too loud so apparently my brain has adjusted to them. Two p.m. is right at our nap time so I’ll probably sleep through the whole test.

In the days when I worked, I loved this time of year. Not much was going on at the office so I used to take time off to just be. It was such a delightful opportunity to stay home, look out the window, and think, think, think. I didn’t have to rush, didn’t have to pretend I cared about the company’s bloody “mission” (unstated but understood was the premise that we were to work ourselves to death but the rewards would go to the biggies), didn’t have to work “smarter,” whateverinell that was supposed to mean. One year we peasants didn’t receive raises (although of course the biggies did), so we all attended the company Christmas party, vowing to eat as much as we could.

On the few occasions I was allowed to work from home, I loved it. Not for me the office politics, the time-wasting conversations—so far from “exchanging ideas,” all that was ever exchanged were recipes, comments about how much so-and-so despised the person down the hall, or terrible misdeeds committed by someone’s ungrateful children. At home my computer was right by a window, I could listen to music, and I finished my work in half the usual time because of no meetings, lunches, or other timewasters.

Oh, well, that’s enough from me this morning. Here’s hoping everyone at the Pond will have a good day!
