Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.
Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).
The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.
So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

Good Saturday morning, Meese! A beautiful morning is unfolding outside, with a clear blue sky and sunlight. This morning when I took Monty out to the courtyard at 5:30 I saw Moonset! It was so beautiful—this glorious white sphere hanging low in the predawn darkness. It looked a little blurry because of my impaired vision, but beautiful. It’ll be full tomorrow but we won’t see it because of the heavy rain predicted.
Yesterday was so warm I had to put on shorts when I came back. I had gone out in capris. The day was so hot I had to turn on the a.c. in the car. The winds were so strong I could feel them trying to push my car in to the next traffic lane. We had a temp. of 84 F.
Today’s high will be 72 F., rising from its current 45 F. That’s good because we’re going with Younger Son, DIL, and Mr. First Grader to North Beach in Maryland. The plan is to walk around, admire the scenery, and then have lunch. Lunch had better be outdoors. Miss Pink Cheeks, on the other hand, departed for Florida yesterd day with her best friend and the best friend’s family. I freaked out when I was told this, but not openly. Florida is Covid Central! I just hope they all take precautions. DIL already considers me to be an interfering old biddy, so I didn’t want to put my little oar in. However, I will worry until I know she’s back, safe and sound, and tests negative for Covid a few days later.
“Guess the Biography Subject” book club was enormous fun yesterday. Our next meeting will be in June.
Daughter texted that there was another shooting in Virginia Beach last night. Not again! I don’t know any details yet. To counteract this horror, there is a little piece of good news. The Arlington County, VA Democrats are phoning up seniors and other vulnerable citizens and driving them from their homes to the big vaccination center, and back again. They’ve got all this phonebanking software, so they’re using it to good effect.
Wishing a nice, peaceful Saturday to all at the Pond.
Yikes! I would be worried about anyone traveling to Florida. There is a fourth wave hitting places where vaccinations have stalled because of right-wing lies and they are also saying that the new variants may impact young people more than the “standard” COVID-19. I am holding my breath until my daughter gets the notification that she can get the vaccine. Her campus requires weekly testing for students attending in-person classes; I hope those who traveled don’t bring a spike in positives.
Good morning, meeses! Saturday …
It is 41 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 52. The forecast calls for “rain”, “light rain” and “cloudy with showers.”
I decided to sleep in today – I had nothing specifically that I needed to do for client work this morning, certainly nothing that can’t wait until tomorrow. It doesn’t help my enthusiasm when the weather is not very inviting.
I am going to go news-lite today and watch the basketball tournament and ignore the insane Republicans and their cosplay at the border and the dangerous right-wing extremists who are now trying to disrupt vaccine distribution. I suspect that someone told them that only black and brown people get COVID-19 and that the virus is a way to preserve their white nation. Nope! You and yours will die and probably at a greater rate since the Biden Administration is determined to vaccinate under-served communities and communities of color. Sensible people will limit their travel to areas where the vaccination rate is high and the enclaves of stupidity will suffer the most. COVidiots.
See all y’all later!
Still vaccine hunting. Trying to get on the schedule before Monday, when everyone is eligible and it will get so much harder. At least the grocery chain now auto-refreshes & opens places within 50 miles in a new window. They’re all still gone by the time I click on a time, but it’s at least something. Today: pick up groceries and …… stick to the laptop hoping for an appointment.

It’s 61 heading for 80 and sunny this morning. Rain/cloudiness moves in this afternoon. I hope late afternoon. Yesterday we generated 18.2 KWHs and the m-t-d is 301.53 – so at least the minimum goal is met. (300 was enough to cover this month’s usage plus make up for the last 3 months that didn’t generate enough to cover usage.) We’ve got 5 generating days left and the forecast has at least some sunshine for 4 of them. We shall see what we shall see.
The Rs have one chance to take and keep power as the U.S. population gets more diverse and that’s to get back to ‘white men only’ voting privilege. They’re running out of time but they’ve been planning and working towards just that since they knew CRA and VRA would probably pass. They’ve had the “long view” – knew they’d go down in the passions of the 1960s, prepared for it, and have been inching their way back ever since. When they were able to put twitler in office, they knew it was time for the final push. This is their make or break, their Normandy beachhead. Or their Waterloo. It’s up to us to make it the latter. We won’t know which it turns out to be until it happens, but if we don’t do our best we’ll guarantee the former.
My son was feeling recovered enough from his minor motorcycle incident last Sunday to give himself a “birthday ride” yesterday. I don’t think he managed the one-per-year 50 miles he originally planned, but he got his ride. (& hmmm, Nancy Pelosi shares his birthday. . . Aries do a stellar job of setting goals and meeting them.)
Coffee and twitter in my near future. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}
Good morning, 44 and cloudy in Bellingham. Our sons will be here today to replace the soil in RonK’s veggie garden so we’ll have a busy but fun day. I didn’t find a trellis yesterday but will this morning because the hydrangea needs to be moved now. Ron can’t dig in the garden so his twitchy shovel can dig a big hole for a needy hydrangea!
Best wishes to all.
