Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: May 2nd

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool, shown here with 3 pages of comments available.

  1. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

    It is 32 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 55. Sunny skies with rain expected this evening. Peeking ahead, it looks like this unseasonable cold will give way to some more typical 60s by Wednesday.

    The clip of the young legislator from Texas who did not realize that the Texas constitution has a lot of racisms in it was astonishing. I might be tempted to say that if he had bothered to learn history instead of being spoon fed right-wing talking points that maybe he would be a better person but I suspect that it increased his admiration of his racist forebears and made him long for the days when you could say “purity of the ballot box” without a bunch of uppity Blacks harshing your buzz.

    The clip:

    For some reason this felt like a longer work week than normal, like Saturday would never come. It was no busier than usual but I did have a lot of queued up accounting work that needed to be done (end of quarter still hanging over me) so maybe it was because it felt like I was doing two jobs! Today will be easier.

    See all y’all later!

    • Good luck with the accounting, Jan! I really want to finish up my work so I can take the summer off. I hate the feeling of “undone homework.”

    • I’m enjoying some of the Twitter responses to that tweet

  2. Good morning, all. Watching the news & eating my almond butter sandwich. There’s a voting rights rally later, I may go on my way home from picking up my AIDS Ride t-shirt & other stuff.

  3. Good Saturday morning, Meese! Partly cloudy here with rain predicted this morning. As usual, it will fail to materialize. Right now in Ashburn it’s 47 F., on its way up to 59 F. It’s too cold for the wretched cicadas to emerge! Land sakes!

    Must get dressed and rush to Trader Joe’s for wine, cereal, strawberries, and perhaps little gifts for the two other mothers who will be present at tomorrow’s Mother’s Day brunch.

    Slept the sleep of the drugged last night, which means I have slightly more energy today. We’re going to the Garden Center this morning.

    My daughter called our cousin in Texas yesterday to see how he was doing. Bless her, she even Googled “how to talk to a person with a terminal diagnosis.” There are certain things one must not say, such as, “You’ll get well,” or “You’ll be fine.” She said he sounded quite pleasant and normal. He’s going to go with the chemo and radiation. Poor guy. We agreed we would call or send cards every couple of weeks so he won’t feel alone.

    Wishing everyone at the Pond a nice, peaceful day. Blessed be!

  4. It’s 68 heading for 80 and “partly sunny” – as in clouds are moving through and sometimes they hide the sun on their way and sometimes they don’t. Yesterday the clouds moved in and stayed. We generated 6.7 KWHs so 92 is the m-t-d. More ground lost. We’ll see if we lose, gain, or break even today.

    Things are pretty much the same with Karen, Amelia, and Jill. Aji’s got something going on that’s freaking her out. She didn’t say whether it was physical and her or other sorts of issues for her or somebody else. Whatever it is, if it turns out to be what she’s afraid of, it’s going to be expensive. The word she used was “hideous”. So Hold the Good Thoughts.

    I’ve got house and twitter work to do so I guess I’d best do it. Coffee first. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  5. Saturday Meese. Just when I thought I could continue to garden today – it started raining. Sigh. It’s 50 going up to 52.

    • Hope it’ll stop raining and dry up enough for you to garden this afternoon. {{{HUGS}}}

  6. Good morning, 47 and cloudy in Bellingham. After a long search I found a pharmacy in a small town near here giving the J&J vaccine, but after talking to me the pharmacist declined to give me the vaccine so it was a disappointing and frustrating afternoon. Looks like I’m going to have to stay careful, hope the one shot of Moderna is enough, and wait for another safer option to be developed. I was really frustrated and disappointed yesterday.

    I think I’ll find a few flowers to plant today. It’s still to cool for begonias but I can add those plants to the mix later. Best wishes to all.
