Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.
Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).
The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.
So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool, shown here with 3 pages of comments available.

Puerto Rico
More protests are organized to demand the departure of LUMA from Puerto Rico
I went to the gym yesterday afternoon, and made it to 8 90-second running segments. It was on the treadmill, and air conditioning, so easier than out in the world but that’s still progress. There’s only a 40% chance of rain over the weekend, so I think I’ll go for an outdoor walk/run. Probably.
It’s 63 heading for mid 80s (maybe) and sunny. Yay! Yesterday we generated 19.5 KWHs so slightly over double the combined production of Tuesday & Wednesday. With 29.4 as the m-t-d we’re not on track by any means but we at least gained a little.
Jill’s relatively safe – for the moment – and back to worrying (as a mom) about her son and (as a caring human being) about the very sick man she will not go back to caretaking for once he runs out of (her) money. I’m not going to say it to her, but I’m worried Joiner Sr. plans an end-of-the-road suicide that will take Joiner Jr. out with him. She’s probably thought of that and is shoving it to be back of her mind. I’m not going to bring it forward again. Aji had a bad episode over Wednesday night/Thursday morning and is probably still recovering. Nothing (but possible deterioration) happening with the new issue until she can get those MRIs 2 weeks from now. At least they’re paid for. Lisa didn’t manage to accrue the energy to get out yesterday. But she managed an Instacart order. Which is a lot bigger than it sounds because of both the energy and the concentration needed to do it. Karen’s doctor is ordering some bloodwork to see if they can figure out the nausea. She’s got 2 new Rx plus the refill on her pain meds she’s been without. The situation with her breathing isn’t getting better. I hope the new meds help with that.
Evil Ones being evil. Platforms like twitter supporting the evil ones by platforming them and not shutting them down. Pretending they aren’t taking sides when of course they are. If an account’s very name calls for killing Native kids it should be shut down, should have been shut down without anyone having to report it. (& lots of us have reported it.) That kind of thing should be caught from the minute the process of creating it is completed. But it’s all of a piece. MSM reporting about Puerto Rico, FB platforming paramilitary treasonous organizations, etc. Fascists own most of the means of communication. We have the authority to break that up by law. We aren’t going to use that authority as long as our majority is so slim and tenuous.
But the sun is shining. I may or may not go out again today. There are some minor things I keep forgetting to get when I do my stock-up runs (one of which I need to do next week – week after at the latest) and I’m getting to the point where I’m having trouble making them do any longer. We shall see. But I’ll get another walk and that’s good. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}
Good morning, 55 and sunny in Bellingham. My weather app was reporting for Montreal earlier this morning but I’ve finally fixed it. I wondered why what I see outside my window was so different from the info on my screen :)
We were at a community college event last night, and even though most people were vaccinated and masks and distancing were required I was incredibly nervous. RonK has stayed more active in the community than I have so he was fine, but I obviously need to adjust to being around people again.
Best wishes to all.
I’m not ready to de-mask. Wisconsin is opening up but what that means is that unvaccinated people who choose to not be masked will be blowing COVIDs in tight places where people are crammed together again. In some ways, it is like the libertarian motorcycle riders who choose not to wear helmets – when they end up in the ICU with permanent brain injuries it was their decision. However, there is a social cost: we pay for their end-of-life care and waste health care resources that might be needed to save lives of people who aren’t assholes. There will be an uptick of COVID cases and hospitalizations and deaths and I personally don’t want to be part of the efficacy test on Pfizer’s vaccine.
You and me both. AR is still at 35% vaccinated. Them’s not good odds. What are good odds are that the folks who are not masked are also not vaxxed. sigh.
LOL! I look at the world’s weather every day in the newspaper, just at the cities I know and love. Montreal is one of them. My friends there tell me that on the first truly warm day of spring they all go out to their balconies to sit and sip white wine. I love to think of their doing that.
Saturday Meese. 58 going up to 91 here in Kingston NY. Going to be out most of the day at a sacred ceremony.
Very tired of racists quoting Dr.King. So is his daughter
I wish Bernice King was not such a rabid LGBT rights denier. When I see her tweets defending her father’s words, I want to retweet but I just can’t amplify her voice. Too bad there isn’t a non-hating King who tweets about MLK’s words.

Good morning, meeses! Saturday …
It is 70 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 93. Sunny skies are in the forecast. Roads are buckling all over southern Wisconsin as the change in temperature (from 40s to 90s) is too much for the asphalt to handle. I am glad I am not planning to go anywhere!
Biden’s “Infrastructure Week” is turning out to not be much different than tRump’s was – a never ending negotiation with Republicans who can always be talked into cutting taxes and repealing health care for millions but who resist any investments that will help the American people. It sounds like Manchin won’t support any infrastructure bill that does not have bipartisan support so I that puts the kibosh on the opportunity to pass the American Jobs Act via reconciliation. He obviously thinks that “Republican voters supporting it by large numbers” is NOT bipartisan, that it is only bipartisan if 10 Republican Senators will vote for it. I hope the people of West Virginia are fine with that – and that his fine bullshit can be used to patch potholes in their roads and beam broadband to rural homes and businesses and hold together the metal struts of bridges that are about to collapse.
I have a tall stack of projects that need to be sorted after my 4 day hiatus from work. I am going to take advantage of the quiet of a Saturday morning to turn the stack into a list.
See all y’all later!
I sort of, almost did 1 day of the 3rd week of my running plan. I made it to 8 90-second segments; the last 4 had more than 60 seconds walking time, so still working on it. But progress is progress. Currently watching the news & eating breakfast. Later, I’m going to cook a stir fry for lunch next week. I got pita bread, hoping it’ll work as a wrap to eat when I go back to the office.
{{{anotherdemocrat}}} – progress is very much progress. You’re doing good. Holding the Good Thought on the going back to the office bit. Healing Energy & moar {{{HUGS}}}
Good stellar Saturday morning, Meese! It’s only five past nine a.m. and it’s already 77 F.! The daytime high for Ashburn is predicted to be 92 F. so I must get my garden watering, exercise, and haircut done before noon.
Yesterday’s weather was schizophrenic. We woke up to ugly dark clouds, which changed to brilliant sunshine and blue skies. While I was having a blissful coffee morning at Starbucks with Darling Niece, a 60-second rain appeared literally out of the blue as half the sky was still blue and filled with fleecy white clouds. Both D.N. and I are fully vaccinated. We wore our masks until it was time to drink our coffee, and we sat at the back of the mostly empty store. The baristas were wearing masks, of course. I felt perfectly safe while catching up with Darling Niece’s news. We hadn’t met for coffee since January 2020!
Yesterday was super-busy on top of a very poor night’s sleep. I simply crashed after lunch. I was so annoyed by this that I took a cold pill last night after sneezing all day despite the allergy pill I’d taken in the morning. Feel rested enough to go water the garden and do my exercise. I also need to get my hair cut.
My left eye is still not what it should be but I hope to Goddess it settles down by the next time I’m due to see the ophthalmologist. Meantime, back here at the ranch, I need to finish writing the playlet because I will looking after the three sisters from 4:30 to 11 p.m. tomorrow. The parents are going to a concert in Maryland.
Speaking of girls, we are going to take Miss Pink Cheeks to get her first Pfizer jab next Tueswday afternoon. She’s 12, so it’s high time now that the CDC has recommended it. We can stop at Starbucks on the way home to get her a cake pop.
That’s just about all my news for the present. Monday will be spent designing a flyer for the authors’ festival.
Wishing a happy, relaxing Saturday to all at the Pond!
It’s 66 heading for 80 or so and – sigh – overcast. Not quite dark enough to need the lights on, dark enough they help. I keep catching sight of a patch of blue here and there, then the clouds reform and it’s gone again. We got a hair under 17.5 KWHs which it right on target for the day. I wish I thought we’d get that much today. But I don’t. The m-t-d is 47 – it would have to be 70 to be on target.
I had a lousy night then overslept so I haven’t checked on anybody this morning. Everybody’s holding at least as good/well as yesterday, I hope. Better would be better, of course. (Did get Lisa’s “rent” paid for June last night. That puts “her account” flat so I hope she can do/get some fundraising by the end of the month. Goddess! I wish she had an advocate. I’m betting there are some COVID-response things out there that could help her but she can’t focus enough to renew her driver’s license. No way she could look through all that mess to find something she actually qualifies for.)
Evil Ones being Evil. & getting help from supposed Decent folks who just can’t bring themselves to vote against evil. If we could pick up just one R Senator to vote for the infrastructure/jobs plan we’d still have the 50-50 & MVP would break the tie.
Heading for coffee and twitter. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}
Good morning, 54 and cloudy in Bellingham. I enjoyed lunch at the bookstore cafe yesterday and it’s so good to see people in Fairhaven again. Feels like the community is emerging from our long isolation. I feel quite safe there as I can be outdoors and masks ae required indoors.
I’ve had a week of good intentions but I haven’t really done very much so I’m going to try to finish something today. My list is long so I hope I can! Best wishes to all.
