Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: June 13th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

    Morning low of 61 degrees in Madison WI with an expected daytime high of 88. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

    Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. It’s ten million degrees (77 with 80something percent humidity), ugh. I didn’t go to the gym yesterday, but I did: make a gallon of tea for the week, make pasta with a white sauce & vegetables, and make roasted vegetables with a tahini & yogurt sauce. So I’ve got meals for the week sorted — actually I’m going to freeze half of the pasta so that’s dinner for at least 2 weeks. And I’m going to the gym this afternoon. Currently eating breakfast & watching the news, blessing the inventor of the ceiling fan.

  3. Sunday Meese! 62 going up to 80 with rain here in Kingston NY
    Puerto Rico

    • I’d boost all of these except for some reason I can’t get to @midnucas – it doesn’t tell me I’m blocked or somehow restricted, it just doesn’t show up. I get the replies sometimes but never the tweet to boost. Sorry.

  4. It’s 79 heading for 92 – the heat index is in the low 80s and is supposed to stay close to the air temps. I’m about to close up the house but am hoping I don’t have to turn on the A/C today. Sunshine is good. (Humidity is not.) We generated 19.5 KWHs yesterday – again, enough to cover having the A/C on – and are starting this lovely Sunday with 171 for the m-t-d. Still not on track for even 400 but gaining.

    I accidentally opened twitter when I opened my weather tracker (the widget gives current conditions, the tracker has the 10-day forecast). I should have just closed it again. GQP chairwoman doing the “Killer Clintons” thing. Jeebus you’d think they’d get some new material. Meanwhile, Dems are doing their jobs as best they can with Rs putting roadblocks in the way and poisoning the well whenever they’re shoved out of a position. Nothing new. (Nothing new about the LW dumping on Dems because we aren’t depots doing what GQP do when they’re in power. I wish they’d get some new material.)

    I haven’t heard from Karen in a few days, Jill or Amelia since last night, and no personal contact w/ Aji (just reading what she posts on twitter and her blog). Aji wasn’t kidding when she said that if love was enough, she’d make it. Wings is, well, they have the kind of relationship I used to thing was wishful thinking on the part of female writers. He’s doing everything he can, and as a very creative as well as caring man, that’s a lot. As of last night, no changes in Jill’s or Amelia’s situations.

    I’ve done the household stuff except floors (surprise) and clothing. I’ll need to do protein for the week this evening. Since Aldi’s had chicken tenders instead of chicken breasts last week, I’m thinking of pan frying them. Messy but something I like cold as well as warm, so only messy once. ???? Coffee and close the house. Then back to twitter (& DK). Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  5. Good Sunday morning, Moosekind! The gloomy gray skies of early morning have given way to tentative sunligfht and soft, misty-looking swatches of white cloud against the pale blue. Currently it’s 76 F. in Ashburn, on its way up to 82 F. “They” are predicting afternoon thunderstorms.

    Not much to say today except that, as usual, physiology and Monty combined to make sure I couldn’t stay in bed past 5:19 a.m. I predict a crash later. Dearly is about to take the dog for a walk and I’m about to drag myself to the gym. Thank Goddess I have something really good to read on my Kindle! I also need to check the garden, haven’t been there in days.

    The Rethugs get away with everything. It makes me mad, sad, and increasingly disinclined to keep up with the news. There’s never any good news. However, I’m reading the Pelosi bio written by Susan Page and it’s fascinating! I’m beginning to understand where Nancy gets her energy and drive, to say nothing of her intelligence. It was her late mother, known as”Big Nancy,” who encouraged her daughter to fulfill her potential. Pelosi, Clinton, Harris, and our own Denise Oliver Velez—all are my heras.

    Hope everyone will enjoy a peaceful Sunday.

  6. Good morning, 60 and raining in Bellingham. I was outside most of yesterday, and in between gardening tasks I read Brandie Carlisle’s memoir Broken Horses. I hesitated to buy a Kindle, but I’m glad I did now. It’s easy to read outdoors with it and having a comfortable resting spot makes the garden even more inviting for me. Best wishes to all.

  7. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

    It is 63 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 82. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

    I am going to pass on the news today – I have a lot of last minute projects to complete before I leave town and I don’t want to get distracted. It was nice to see an American President and First Lady not act like total assholes on a trip to Europe; the Queen seems genuinely pleased to see that we had taken out the garbage and the G7 leaders looked relieved. The first step in repairing the U.S. image abroad is to stop sending assholes.

    See all y’all later!

  8. Monday Meese. Woke up to loud crashes and booms – thunderstorm – dogs freaking out. Will have rain all day.

    Puerto Rico

  9. It’s 68 heading for 92 & so little humidity today the heat index & air temps will be the same. Yay!! Sunny again which is also a Yay! We generated 21.5 KWHs and didn’t have the A/C on, so catching up. With 192.7 for the m-t-d we have a whole lot of catching up to do. It’s unlikely but it’s still possible to get over 500 for the month. IF the sun holds out.

    Not watching the media – or even social media as far as the news is concerned – is a very good idea. Folks keep saying they know MSM is 90% owned by and 99% used as a propaganda machine by the Birchers/fascists/nazis/Deplorables – but they go right back to reacting as if it were Edward R. Murrow or something. Dems are cleaning up ungawdly messes and are following the law. That means very little of what we want Dems to be doing is ever going to make the news. And if it does, it will be twisted so that it sounds like Dems are not doing what we want them to. Fears that we’re going to “move on” and not go after traitors and criminals come from Deplorables “leaking” supposed Dem plans. Just like all those R appointments Joe was supposedly considering that had so many of my friends outraged at the “same ol’ same ol’ – old white man” in office. All of those “leaks” came from Deplorables. None of those people were appointed to anything. Joe knows better than to let rats in the house. He’s got enough of them in there already to get of. And any investigator worth their salt isn’t going to let any information get out about who is being investigated for what until they’ve got the perp in custody and a solid case for the prosecutor to use. The fact we aren’t hearing about who’s being investigated is good news as far as I’m concerned. We have competent, capable, caring “adults” at the helm. Yeah, keep an eye on where the Ship of State is going – but for heaven’s sake don’t give the helm back to the Deplorables because it takes time to change course or even slow down with something so much bigger than a battleship and Dems didn’t make it stop or turn on a dime. This isn’t stock car racing. (Rant is result of trying to calm a friend down yesterday because twitler wasn’t arrested yet.)

    I did fry the chicken tenders yesterday. Dredged in sorghum flour, salt, pepper, and a pinch of cayenne then pan fried. I haven’t had fried chicken in almost – or maybe over – a year. That package should have made 10 servings. Well, there are 7 left. And only that because I packaged them up for dinners this next week. Otherwise I’d probably eaten another serving. ???? Even cleaning up the mess that comes from frying anything that was worth it.

    OK, coffee and over to twitter. I’d love a walk but I’m not going to shut the doors until I need to close up the house and I’m certainly not going to take a walk with the doors open. We’ll see if it’s still OK walking temps once I do close up the house. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  10. Back from my dash into the office. 77 already & humid. Blech. Didn’t make it to the gym yesterday, somehow Sundays always fill up. Today: work. And gratitude for the ceiling fan.

  11. Good morning, 59 and raining in Bellingham. Thanks to the rain I stayed busy indoors yesterday and will do the same with desk work today. I hope to be in my sewing room as well but I’ll see what happens. Best wishes to all.

  12. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

    It is 61 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 79. Where I am heading it will be an expected daytime high of 109 – but it will be a dry heat!

    My next check-in will be two time zones west of here. Try to stay out of trouble!! :)

    See all y’all later!

  13. Tuesday Meese. 58 going up to 73 with rain here in Kingston NY. Gotta write Black Kos today, plus something for upcoming Juneteenth – and for Sunday.
    Busy.

    Feeling for folks in Texas, tho Blaire Erskine made me grin

    Puerto Rico

    • Groan! If it’s not grim old Mother Nature battering the island, it’s the corrupt people in charge. When will anything good ever happen in poor old Puerto Rico?

  14. We had our first 100 degree of the year yesterday, and ERCOT wants people to conserve energy because several plants are offline. Anyone heard this song before? I skipped my walk because I don’t want to start my day by getting overheated. Sitting under the ceiling fan, a/c set at 79. Today: just work.

  15. It’s 67 outside going up to 93 – still no heat index, thankfully – and sunny. We generated 22.87 KWHs yesterday – highest day for the month. The m-t-d is starting out this morning at 214.9 – so catching up.

    It’s 80 in the kitchen because I just finished baking banana nut muffin bread ????. But the house is open and the ceiling fans are on so hopefully it will cool down fairly quickly. I shoved some potatoes in there to bake and not “waste the heat” so I’ll have cold potatoes to do various cold-potato things with probably into next week. The frozen peas and frozen broccoli don’t have to be cooked, just thawed, to be edible. And the chicken’s cooked. And I’ve got cold coffee in the fridge. So basically, unless I want green beans for dinner, the only reason to heat up the kitchen for the next several days will be oatmeal for breakfast. Even that I could do cold. But I don’t like it cold.

    Aji got good news and bad news yesterday. The good being the medical will be covered. They’ve still got to make sales for regular bills and things like travel to and from treatment centers. But the nasty 6-figures if it turns out to be what she thinks it is, that will be covered. The bad is the imaging company’s only MRI machine broke and her scan is being pushed out at least a couple of weeks. More Holding of Good Thoughts.

    I need to email Fineena. She hasn’t checked in lately. Nothing new with Amelia or Jill as of last night. Or multiple other friends and family for that matter. With Amelia that’s along the line of “no where near shore but haven’t let go of the floating spar either”. With Jill it’s the very real emotional trauma of not knowing which of the several potential bad things in front of her is actually going to happen. With some others it’s not if, it’s when. But everybody’s holding on.

    Coffee and twitter. Close up the house in another hour. See if it’s still cool enough to get a bit of a walk in after I do. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  16. Good morning, 54 and partly cloudy in Bellingham. A cool breeze is moving through the trees outside my window so our soggy garden may dry a bit today. I would like to finish planting some flowers but it was so chilly and wet yesterday I retreated to the sofa with my blankie and enjoyed a long nap instead. So I’ll see what today brings my way. Best wishes to all.

  17. Good morning, meeses! Wednesday …

    It is 90 degrees in the Desert Southwest with an expected daytime high of 108 – but it will only feel like 102!! It may rain but sadly that won’t cool things down, just wash things away.

    I don’t understand red states like Arizona banning not just COVID-19 vaccine mandates for their college campuses but banning mask mandates because “the pandemic is over.” The tell is that they are still requiring other vaccinations like meningitis and measles, just not the “hoax virus” that their dear leader ignored and which resulted in over 600,000 deaths. If I were teaching, I would tell them to take their job and shove it.

    Just a quick check-in because my travel laptop keyboard is not great for typing.

    See all y’all later!

    • Hope you’re enjoying yourself wherever you are, Jan! It’s to be hoped you aren’t in Arizona, where you might be subject to sprinkles of bamboo dust from all those ballots from Asia, don’tcha know.

      Speaking of the desert southwest, I’d love to visit the Death Valley Certified Dark Sky national park. You can actually see the Milky Way in those skies, they’re so devoid of the ambient light of civilization.

      Enjoy, and be sure to stay away from the poison of daily news!

  18. Morning Meese. 55 going up to 75 I’m pissed. Woke up to Blue Checks on twitter dissing the victory of Juneteenth as a Federal holiday
