Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.
Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).
The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.
So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?
…
NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

Saturday Meese. 50 here in Kingston NY, going up to a cloudy 84.
Puerto Rico
That dude is kinda cute.
Another hot day here, though there’s hope for rain & cooler temps next week. Today’s agenda: make next week’s “overnight” oats, and maybe get to the gym. Watching the news — in local news, a small town north of Austin is having their first ever Pride! So, there is some small good news in the world.
That’s great, another! Even here at the home they stuck little rainbow flags all around the main clubhouse and what my husband calls “The Nut House.” (Compassion is not the primary ingredient in his character, I fear, except where his own family is concerned.)
YAY! for the small bits of good news that are so very important where they are happening. Stay safe. Healing Energy & {{{HUGS}}}
A little bit of history: Taylor is in Williamson County, which used to be so deeply crimson red, it was like having a chunk of Oklahoma in central Texas. Back in the 1990s, WillCo very nearly lost out on having Apple open a facility because of some awful anti-LGBT law they had passed. They rescinded it, and Apple is now one of the major employers.
I remember. It was the “white flight” county back when I lived in Austin. I was surprised when the rescinded the anti-LGBT law even to get Apple there.
Yay! My son-in-law works for Apple in Austin.
Good Saturday, Meese, on a “nugly” morning. After waking up far too early (4-blinking-30), I slunk out to the courtyard with the dawg, blearily searching the sky for a sight of the last supermoon of the year. The sky is covered with a thick, puffy blanket of gray clouds, so no dice. It did cheer me to look at the buildings in the square and see four different apartments lit up. Misery loves company!
Right now it’s 73 F., going up to 87 F., with a 50% chance of rain. I’ve already soaked The Foot, but will rest before I proceed with the rest of my day.
Yesterday was so busy that today I just want a quiet day at home, except for taking care of Younger Son’s dog early in the evening. (They’re off to Williamsburg for an overnight stay.) We did have a productive discussion yesterday evening, which went better than I expected. Younger Son and DIL have conveniently remembered only 45% of the financial help we have given them in the past. I, on the other hand, remember chapter and verse of those transactions, including the actual dialogue, month, and year on each occasion. Upshot: Younger Son’s memory was vaguely stirred, but DIL, who has a master’s in accounting, wants documentary proof. I’ll have to call a couple of financial institutions on Monday.
It’s not that I’m trying to recover the money. It was a gift. It’s just that I want them to understand that their eventual inheritance will be reduced by that amount. Elder Son should have his share.
They did say they want to stay put for a long, long time after this move. They thought their current house (into which they moved at Samhain 2018) would be their semipermanent move. However, it turned out to be very dark as well as too close to a main thoroughfare. The backyard is a reasonable size but Younger Son told me they never go into it. Its basic function is that of dog toilet, which he cleans with a shovel once a week.
But enough about that. Sorry if this is more info than you care to have, but it’s a relief to talk about it in an unbiased forum.
Yesterday’s meeting of the Biography Book Club was hilarious, so much fun that I will truly miss it after we move. I regretted not being able to offer to hostess the next meeting three months from now. The current hostess is having a lot of difficulty in her personal life, poor woman. Anyway, it didn’t take the others long to guess my biography was about Nancy Pelosi. I told them in an impassioned manner that she is a truly incredible woman, who has mastered the arcane processes of Congressional governance AND she does it in stiletto heels at age 81!
Princesspat, have you recovered from the assault by your Rugosa rosebush? I seem to remember that the Rugosa produces rose hips, which are full of vitamin C. You can make a tea with them or, if there isn’t a war on, you can make rose-hip syrup. Anyway, the tea saved a lot of Britons from scurvy during WWII when sugar was rationed and citrus fruits impossible to obtain..
Wishing everyone at the Pond a nice, quiet day.
{{{Diana}}} I’m glad your various meetings went well yesterday. It’s a pity younger son doesn’t remember even half of the gifts you’ve given him and his family – but even if he did, documenting is a very good idea. (What the heck, 5 generations down somebody looking at family history could get a truly wrong idea about family dynamics even if nobody in this generation does.) Healing Energy & moar {{{HUGS}}}
Thanks, bfitz! Hugs right back at ya!
The scratches are healing and the Rugosa is recovering too. It was covered with blossoms earlier this spring so I waited until it through blooming but it was hard to cut out the branches full of new rose hips. I love seeing them in the fall. I’ve never made rose hip tee, but I do love using them in flower arrangements. I’ll need to do some more pruning after the leaves are gone.
It’s 80, not supposed to get out of the 80s today, with a heat index of 85. The heat index isn’t supposed to get out of the 90s. But then it wasn’t supposed to yesterday and it did. The day started sunny with a cool breeze so I opened up and aired out the house. The breeze is still pleasant but it’s no long sunny and the air is wet. So I closed up the house. Turned on the A/C even though I hope it doesn’t actually kick on today. I hope. Yesterday we generated 20.1 KWHs and the m-t-d is 430 – with 5 “partly cloudy” days left to go, making even 500 is iffy. (When I finally accepted the data I’ve been looking at for months – this is a very cloudy year & we’re getting about 80% of the “normal” sunshine – I increased my dosage of Vitamin D by half.)
Rs are deliberately making us waste time. Dems are being shot at from the Left and even some Dems who should know better for going through procedures. We have to show the nation and the world that we have put forth every possible effort to work with the GQP before we do what is necessary to get anything done. But the longer it takes, the less time we have left to actually do the things that will keep us in enough power to keep doing them. sigh. And of course the Rs know that. They planned it that way. But then our culture glorifies law breakers anyway. The strong take, the weak petition. The strong break, the weak follow the law. Robin Hood. Jesse James. Bonnie and Clyde. The entire em effen traitorous “rebel” south. We live in an evil culture.
Folks are hanging on. Some things are better. Many are not. But still hanging on. Still working to get to better. Somehow. Meanwhile, it’s starting to rain. Which we need. Coffee. Twitter. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}
Oh, wow – the Tour de France is back, it was in September last year, and with no foreigners – the commentators had to do so remotely, limited numbers of spectators. Anyway, today is the 1st day, so much for leaving the house this morning. The only sporting event I really care about. Well, if they ever televise a triathlon or marathon, I watch them.
There’s been a crash already – a fan with a sign by the side of the road. They really need to put up barriers or just tell the fans to watch themselves.
Good morning, 74 and sunny in Bellingham. We’ll have temps in the 90’s later today and that’s officially hot! Fortunately a slight breeze from Bellingham Bay and shade from all the trees we have planted is keeping us relatively comfortable. I watered the patio plants before I went to bed last night but will need to keep a drip hose going on some of the other plants in the garden today. Our water is metered now so we need to be more thoughtful re how we use it. No more setting the sprinkler and then forgetting to turn it off.
Time for coffee and to see what’s happening in the news. Best wishes to all.
