Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: August 15th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Saturday Meese. We are under a flood watch here in the Hudson Valley of NY starting this evening because of Henri.

    Puerto Rico

    Haiti

  2. Good morning, meeses! Saturday…

It is 73 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 82. Thunderstorms are in the forecast.

I am watching with interest the reports that the Taliban has a cash flow crisis. Afghanistan bank accounts have been frozen by western banks and some allies are vowing not to do business with them. I am not sure what sort of commerce they will engage in – they seem disinterested in modern life – will they go back to growing and selling poppies for cocaine? People have said that the Taliban does not care if there are economic sanctions because they don’t need the global business community. It will be interesting to see if that holds up – maybe 20 years ago you could do that but I am not sure you can now.

It looks like a hurricane is headed right for the northeast; stay safe peeps!!

    See all y’all later!

  3. Good morning, everyone. I only woke up twice last night! For me, that’s a great night’s sleep. Normal weather for us in August, really hot with heat index in the 100s. I’ll think of some reason to leave my apartment today. Maybe.

  4. Good Saturday morning, Meese. It’s 76 F. and partly cloudy in Ashburn, rising to 87 F. At noon I’m expecting 7-year-old Karl to join us; he’ll stay until tomorrow afternoon, when 6-year-old Ethan will arrive to spend Sunday night and Monday with us until he’s picked up by his harassed father.

Yesterday I was busy from the time I opened my poor old eyes until I finally shut them at 10:30. Had 8 hours’ undrugged sleep last night, which is something of a miracle.

Just to start the day off badly, I completely messed up my email. All I wanted to do was shrink the screen view of each email until I could see the side scrollbar on the right. Instead I completely lost the organization. After clicking around wildly for a while, I messed it up even further. “Help” was no help as it wanted to help me with Firefox. I don’t HAVE Firefox, thank Goddess.

Anyway, although I didn’t hold out much hope, I restarted the laptop. At least I can see my email now, although not in the same organization or in the same sidebars as I used to have. Oh, well, that’s enough on that totally boring subject. My email is my lifeline since I’m heavily involved with the authors’ festival next month and need to communicate with the authors.

So, world events. Yep, Haiti and PR are being ignored despite the hurricanes bearing down on them. I am still receiving Twitter and Facebook messages from men who are “eager to get to know me better.” Did my name appear on a dating site? Great Mother! If these are real people they can see quite plainly that I look like the wrath of Goddess and moreover, am very old and very married!
I just ignore them. Compared to most people’s problems, this is very small beer.

Hoping everyone will have a nice Saturday and that the wrath of Sekhmet the Blood Drinker will fall upon Abbott, Patrick, and who’s that other guy in Texas—oh, yeah, Paxton. Death. That’s all they want, Death. Too bad for them Death will arrive for their voters, not the people they’d like to get rid of!

    • Indeed! “My email is my lifeline.”

I am so vested in the comfortable structure I have for email viewing and organizing that I am running a version of Microsoft’s email software that has been off support for several years. I will keep running it until they tell me that it will no longer link with my cloud-based email account and then I will grudgingly change. I see the newer version on client’s computers so it won’t be a total shock but I find little there to love.

  5. Atlantic coast peeps stay safe, please.

It was too warm & muggy to open up this morning until the rain moved in 20 minutes ago. I’ve got the house airing out but I’ll need to close up again before 9. The cloud cover last night held the warmth and wet to the earth and didn’t let anything cool off. It’s 77 now heading for 91 and a heat index probably over 100. We generated 14 KWHs yesterday, best in over a week but not August good, and the m-t-d is 287.77 – also not August good.

    Hold the Good Thought for everybody. There are some maybes out there that could help. IF they come true. Coffee. Then twitter. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  6. Good morning, 58 and cloudy in Bellingham. Ryan is home now so our house feels very quiet, and I’m welcoming the feeling. I’ve loved our family time together but it’s nice to have a break too. I’ve got some garden clean up and laundry to do today, and I want to wash and stretch some more old needlepoint canvases. If I can get started I’ll have some quiet fun today but music, solitaire, and coffee are entertaining me now.

    Best wishes to all.
