Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: August 29th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

Morning low of 77 degrees in Madison WI with an expected daytime high of 84. Chance of thunderstorms.

Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Sunday Meese. So much going on it’s hard to keep track. Coolish here in NY – 64, going up to 76. Very worried for my religious family members in NOLA – most are staying, only 2 are evacuating.

Chef Jose is on the way (of course)

  3. Puerto Rico

  4. Good Sunday morning, Moosekind. My niece, her roommate, and their zoo (companion animals) arrived safely in Savannah from New Orleans at 6:30 this morning. Thank Goddess! I was worried about her.

We have clouds in Ashburn this morning. It’s 73 F., on its way up to 85 F. We may or may not have a shower. Last night we had desultory thunder and lightning, followed by some rain. At any rate, it was enough that I don’t have to water the garden patch this morning.

Speaking of that, the tomatoes have been very slow to ripen despite our 90-degree days. I suppose that’s because of the angle of the sun. Meteorological autumn begins on 1 September, no matter what the weather’s doing. I’m picking the big tomatoes when they’re orange because if I wait, they’ll be attacked by vicious insects.

Feeling rotten after a bad night. When I woke up, though, it was too late to take a melatonin tablet. I’ll just have to catch up later.

On the good news side, I happened to be cleaning off my desk and picked up a printout of Chapter 9 of Iron and Scarlet. It’s not as bad as I’d thought! If I can think of a way to shift the conversation scenes to Chapter 10 and carry on with the boar hunt itself, it might be enough to get me over the “middle-of-the-book-blues.” Why is it always Chapter 9 that gives me trouble? It happened with Long, Long Way to Run and Turnabout as well.

Chattering about trivia this morning because I can’t bear reality at the moment. What with Hurricane Ida, Covid stupidity, and Kabul Airport, I feel overwhelmed.

Wishing a good Sunday to all at the Pond.

  5. Good morning. Watching the news, flipping over to Harry Potter when it gets to be too much. Got laundry on, will make tea shortly. Made dinner for the next two weeks yesterday: pasta with veggies in a white sauce. I’m grateful to be safely ensconced in my safe, cool apartment (hey, this is Texas in the summertime — “cool” is better than “warm”).

  6. It’s 73 going up to 87 and heat index supposed to stay below 95. Sunny at the moment but rain moving in shortly. Or at least clouds. Yesterday we generated 12.5 KWHs which was just enough to get us to 400. Not likely to get to 450 but if we can to 430 – very possible with 3 production days left in August – we’ll have moved to 4th place for life-of-the-system August production. Not great but not that bad considering we haven’t had a single day of 20 or better this month.

Sunday chores, bit by bit to not mess with my hands, and daily twitter chores – plus Dee’s diary of course – are my plans for the day. Trying my best to find something good going on in the world. And there is. Caring people doing their best to survive – & help others survive if they can – the evils of the world. But goddess! how many and how strong the evils. Holding Good Thoughts all around.

    Coffee and twitter and DK after I close up the house. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  7. Good morning, 56 and partly cloudy in Bellingham. The sun was hot on the patios yesterday, but in the shade the air feels like fall. And the evenings are cool now so I re arranged the patio furnishings to make room for the fire pit. It’s nice to have an all season garden, and it’s even nicer to be able to just putter around in it now that the major work is done.

I’m feeling very home centered in both my activity and my thoughts, but life in post tRump America is still overwhelming me so I’m grateful to be able to keep my focus small. Best wishes to all.

  8. Monday Meese. Just got off the phone with godson who is first responder in NOLA. 911 is still out Main power transformer for NOLA will probably be out for a week.

  9. Puerto Rico

  10. Good morning. Normal steam room hot weather here. Working in the office today, I brought the yoga book to remind me to do the stretches. Hoping that things are….less bad in Louisiana than feared.

  11. Good Monday morning, Moosekind! We can look forward to low 80’s, even high 70’s, after Ida’s remnants pass through on Wednesday, but right now it’s 75 F. in Ashburn, on its way up to 90 F. Les thunderstorms are predicted for the afternoon. We’ll see.

The Banana-Walnut Bran Muffins came out of the oven a few minutes before 8 a.m. Very tasty! When I make a batch, I give two to Raspberry Poodle’s Mom across the hall and two to my charming Irish neighbor on the right. They enjoy them and it keeps us from getting bored with the same muffins for breakfast over and over. I like to vary our breakfasts.

But enough of this culinary chitchat. Changing the sheets will have to wait until tomorrow, there’s too much to do today. Have to finish the postcards to voters and deliver them, deliver an Authors Festival Mask, stop by the Wellness Center to deliver my Wellness questionnaire ahead of my Wellness interview on Thursday, etc., etc. It’s going to be a busy day!

M’Daughter told me that because of problems in the supply chain, Christmas gifts for children might not arrive in time. Will I ever forget the year Miss Pink Cheeks was five? She was expecting Santa to bring her a doll’s crib, but poor old Santa forgot where he hid it. Younger Son and DIL found it in April and told Nora it had got stuck in the chimney.

Time to get started on my busy day. Wishing a peaceful day to all without too much illness or stress re the news.

  12. It’s 70 heading for 89 (heat index not supposed to reach 95) and mostly sunny at least for the moment. Yesterday we generated 12.22 KWHs (m-t-d 412.3) but at least I managed without needing the A/C yesterday. Hopefully won’t today either. We shall see.

“Real” ID is one of the more insidious scams for oppression our various govts have come up with. It’s seriously irritating for those of us who’ve changed our names, especially if more than once, for whatever reason. That part obviously hits women hardest. But they require a utility bill in your own name and many married women don’t have one. But where it gets worse – that utility bill isn’t to prove who you are, the point of ID, it’s to prove where you live. And there comes the really sneaky bad part. The state can decide that wherever you’re living isn’t a “permanent” address and deny you ID at its whim. So homeless people can’t get one, that’s a given, and turns the entirety of the homeless population “undocumented”. But poor people living in RVs, cheap mobile homes, sometimes any manufactured home, sheds and garages turned into apartments – at the whim of the state, any or all of these can be “disallowed” turning most poor people into “undocumented”. No ID, no vote. That’s a given in many states. But no ID, no benefits in many states. You can’t even enter a federal office building to talk to the SSA people about retirement or disability without ID. You can’t effen buy matches to light your propane cooker, kerosene heater, or wood in the stove/fireplace without ID. You can’t get certain meds, not all Rx, without ID. You certainly can’t sign a lease anywhere to get that “permanent” address. There are people dead of this. And more who will die. And that doesn’t count the BIPOC U.S. citizens snatched up by ICE and ‘deported’ because they’re “undocumented”. Our culture is evil.

Nothing new. Or at least nothing good/better. With anybody I’m personally trying to help or even know about. sigh. Sometimes I feel like I’m safe on a little island in the middle of a sea of trouble watching people drown, people I can’t help because they’re further out than I can throw a lifeline or even swim with one. So I toss in as many floatation devices as I can get my hands on and hope it gets to someone who can use it to stay afloat a bit longer, maybe even make it to shore. Holding the Good Thoughts for all.

    Off to twitter. Maybe something I say or boost there will be another floatation device for somebody. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

    • I am a strong proponent of women NOT legally changing their names when they get married. Go by Mrs. So-and-So if you want but keep your birth name for legal documents. It is an ownership thing and a throwback to the coverture laws AND as your friend is finding out, an impediment when you need identification.

    • Gad, I didn’t know that about Real ID. How tiresome! I don’t expect to ever fly again—I’m so old—but ifI wanted to fly, I’d have to get one.

      • I think a passport works also. The RealID is tied to a drivers license and not everyone has one.

        • To the driver’s license and any state ID used in lieu of driver’s license for those who don’t drive. I think a passport will work but I’m not sure. But the bloody thing is one more #RepublicanDeathCult suppression “response” to the non-existent problem of people using fake IDs to vote and scam the safety-net programs.

  13. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

It is 68 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 81. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

Mitch McChinless says that we could stay in Afghanistan “forever” with just a 3,500 troop deployment and suffer no casualties because somethingsomething. He knows he can spew crap like that because no sane military commander will ever test his theory but if they do, they should send him in with a regiment of MAGAts to lead the occupation.

Louisiana. :::sigh::: Levees overtopped, power out, backup generators failed. And one of the two major parties in America, and one poised to take over Congress and block Joe Biden’s climate agenda, denies the changes that is making Cat 3 hurricanes survive hundreds of miles inland.

Busy day here, see all y’all later!

  14. Good morning, 56, cloudy, and a cool breeze in Bellingham. I should be at my desk, but I’m lingering with coffee and music. I’ve scanned the news, but my overwhelmed feelings from doing so are not good. So I’m going to tend to home and garden and muddle through the day.

    Best wishes to all.

  15. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

It is 61 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 79. Mostly cloudy skies are in the forecast. We are starting a 5 day period where highs will stay under 80, low 70s by the end of the week. I’m ready!

I watched the coverage of the end of the Afghanistan war with relief. What a tragic waste of blood and treasure! Someone pointed out that the “war” was being waged mostly by contractors in the recent past which is why the Republicans are so outraged – those are their donors. I still don’t understand what’s wrong with Richard Engel – maybe he got too close to a explosion and it rattled his brains. He sounds like he crawled out of Mitch McChinless’ colon, their views are indistinguishable.

I cannot in a million years imagine what life would be like with the loss of power and no power expected for 7-10 days. Yes, the levees held but New Orleans is still going to be miserable. Is the Louisiana power company run by the same idiots in Texas who said “no one expects Texas to be cold” – they should expect high winds and hurricanes.

I gave myself a few days off before I begin House Clearing Phase II. I will begin again in earnest tomorrow and give my body one more day of recovery.

    See all y’all later!

  16. Good morning. I did not stretch/move enough yesterday, my back is stiff. I’ll put some capsaicin patches on after I wake up a bit. Glad I’m working at home today. The news about Louisiana is just so sad, and horrifying (the alligator attack).

    • Hi, another! WHAT alligator attack? Why do I never hear of these things?

I’ve never heard of capsaicin patches. Are you putting red-hot chili pepper patches on your back? Isn’t that dangerous?

      • It’s the same people who make lidocaine patches, they’re good for stiff muscles. you don’t want to know about the alligator attack, trust me.

  17. Tuesday Meese.
It seems where ever I’m reading about Chef Jose is there.

    Salute to Chef Jose

  18. Puerto Rico
