Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: September 26th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

    Morning low of 50 degrees in Madison WI with an expected daytime high of 81. Partly cloudy skies are in the forecast.

    Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Sunday Meese. 52 going up to 71 here in Kingston NY.
    I’m starting a new series “Caribbean Matters” on Monday – still haven’t picked a permanent time slot. Have been annoyed for several years about the lack of attention paid to our neighbors – unless there is a disaster.
    Case in point – PM Mia Mottley of Barbados – who just gave a brilliant speech at the UN

    • She’s right. If some people were not allowed to become ridiculously rich (and no, they don’t work harder than anyone else), there would be enough to feed the world’s hungry and give them access to light and knowledge.

  3. Puerto Rico

  4. Good morning! Did my walk/run, now watching the news & eating breakfast. Plan for the day: make tea & overnight oats for next week. That’s just about it.

  5. It’s 60 heading for 90 and supposedly sunny. Yesterday we generated 11.37 KWHs and m-t-d of 297.76 starts the last Sunday of September. So definitely 300, 350 is possible, 365 is iffy. We shall see what we shall see.

    Internet didn’t want to stay connected this morning. Irritating. I’m easy to irritate today, considering the amount and quality of sleep I got. sigh. Murf should be eating about 2 cans a day of the special food. He’s eating less than 1/2 a can. The other 5 are very anxious to help him out of course. What he doesn’t eat is most certainly not going to waste. I did see him eating kibble (from Cloud’s bowl) – but not enough. One more on-going concern on my list. Which is always long. Who gets my focus depends on whose situation is the most urgent at the moment.

    Late up and later online so I need to get over to DK and twitter and do some boosting. And more Sunday Chores. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  6. Good morning, 57 and cloudy with a week of rain in the forecast. I enjoyed some quiet time in the garden yesterday, reading Braiding Sweetgrass. I have the Kindle edition but will order the printed book so I can hold the authors wise words in my hands…..

    This self-proclaimed “not very good digital citizen” wrote a first draft of “Braiding Sweetgrass” in purple pen on long yellow legal pads. She prefers working outside, where she “moves between what I think of as the microscope and the telescope,” observing small things in the natural world that serve as microcosms for big ideas. For instance, Kimmerer explains, “The other day I was raking leaves in my garden to make compost and it made me think, This is our work as humans in this time: to build good soil in our gardens, to build good soil culturally and socially, and to create potential for the future. What will endure through almost any kind of change? The regenerative capacity of the earth. We can help create conditions for renewal.”

    My best wishes to all.

  7. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

    It is 61 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 81. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

    It sounds like this week the Congress will vote on the $3.5 trillion reconciliation, the $1.2 trillion bipartisan roads and bridges bill, and the first test vote on the debt-limit increase in the Senate (to fund the government until Dec.3 and to increase the debt-limit). I guess we will find out if Joe Manchin is willing to destroy the credit of the United States and shut down the federal government in order to protect the filibuster. It is time to call the Republicans out on their hypocrisy – Democratic Senators have always voted to raise the debt ceiling when the Republicans needed the votes. We are always expected to be the adults – it is time to drop that and play hardball.

    Busy week here – last week of the month and the quarter and I need to get caught up on accounting work.

    See all y’all later!

  8. Monday Meese. 52 going up to 77 and sunny here in Kingston.

    Am starting a new series of posts at DKos today (9:30 AM EST) Caribbean Matters

    Puerto Rico
    Puerto Rico (LUMA was trending this morning)

  9. Good morning. Working in the office today, all too soon that will be most days. I did put in for keeping 2 work from home days, I hope I get to. Slept poorly, hope my tea is strong enough.

    • {{{anotherdemocrat}}} Holding The Good Thought you’ll get to keep working at least 2 days a week from home. (Also that your tea is strong enough.) Healing Energy & moar {{{HUGS}}}

  10. Good Monday morning, Moosekind! Events conspired to keep me from posting here on the weekend, but I’m back this morning.

    At 20 minutes to 6 Monty and I went out to visit the grass, so to speak, and when I looked up the half-moon was directly overhead. It made me think of my first visit to London in 1965, when I traveled to Green Park, got off the Tube, and walked to Half Moon Street. The name had always intrigued me: in ditchwater-dull Tulsa, streets were named East 32nd, or Main, or something equally boring. The stars were out too, in the dim night sky. As a rule I can’t see any stars at all because of clouds or light pollution, so this was a real treat.

    Speaking of memories, it was 45 years ago this very day that we moved into our newly built house with its huge backyard. We’ve lived here 3 and 1/2 years; if I’d known then what I know now… The problem is not so much that this is a bad place to live—in many ways it’s wonderful. It’s just that I didn’t know how much I’d miss the sight of fireflies hovering in the summer dusk over the creek; the sight, scent, and crackle of logs burning in the woodstove; and last but not least, the ease of simply letting the dog out to romp in said backyard, not to mention the ease of cleaning dog barf off our hardwood floors.

    Had the night from hell last night, which is too bad, because we have a lot to do today. The GEEK is coming tomorrow! We’ve got to get stuff out of the way.

    Oh, weather. Last Friday, on a scale of 1 to 10, was an 11. Think of a perfect day and that was it. Saturday was a bit overrun by white cirrostratus clouds, and yesterday was downright windy. There is some sort of fruit visible in the woods across the way. Wish I could get it, but it’s out of the question.

    Right now in Ashburn we have gorgeous blue skies, low humidity, sunlight, the lot. It’s 58 F., going up to 81 F. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  11. It’s 64 heading for 90 and still no heat index. (Yay!) Sunny at the moment. Yesterday we generated 11.3 KWHs and are starting the last Monday in September with 309 as the m-t-d. 341 gets us to 6th place, 365 to 4th. We shall see what we shall see.

    Groggy from a wretched night. Got the laundry on. In a bit I’m going to the grocery store pharmacy for something, I’m not sure what, to deal with this sinusitis so I can sleep. While I’m there I’ll pick up a few things that will push out the next big run for a bit. (Although I have to do an Aldi’s run this week. Maybe tomorrow. Otherwise Thursday.) Gonna call Tractor Supply about woodbricks too. When my brain is functioning a little better.

    Pat got & delivered a COVID test to Amelia yesterevening. It’s negative. Since the COVID cough is very characteristic, Amelia is very sure she has COVID so she’s taking the negative test to mean the vaccine is working and she’s not contagious any longer – and that this bout of it will be over soon. Thank goddess she’s double vaxxed! Pat brought her some decent masks, too, bless her. (& another friend is sending her some so she’ll be much better protected next time she has to go out.) Everybody else is hanging on. Dealing with the regular crap of having their very important issues and time frames dismissed as so unimportant rides or appointments can be canceled or moved without even telling them. But hanging on.

    Coffee & getting my brain particles together. Then DK & twitter while I wait for the washer to finish. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  12. Good morning, 57, cloudy and breezy in Bellingham. The sounds of wind and rain kept me awake in the night, and despite my worries the trees are intact and the basement is dry. The garden is really wet though so I hope it’s jus rain showers today.

    We enjoyed Sunday supper with Hans, Heidi and my sister last evening. It’s best for Heidi to stay home now so we at their house. She’s used to having the front and back doors open so she can sniff her way around the garden but with the rain and changing temps that needs to change.

    I’ve got 4 boxes of fabric ready to donate today so progress is actually happening, yay! I’ve got many more to go but it’s getting easier, and I’m loving seeing the empty totes. After my sister’s visit I’ll start sorting the bolts of fabric stored under my cutting table.

    Best wishes to all.

  13. Tuesday Meese. %9 going up to 69 with rain here in Kingston

    Puerto Rico

    They have already given the signal! All Puerto Rico against LUMA! Friday October 15 5pm Express Las Americas. See you on the street! OUT LUMA!

  14. Good morning. Back to non-cool weather. Not gonna say “warm” because 73 is still way better than what we had just a couple of weeks ago, it just isn’t cool. And my back is really unhappy from working in the office yesterday, I neglected my chair yoga; even with salonpas patches on my back overnight it still hurts. Still did 1.1 miles, and 5 90-second running segments. Today: work, and call the doctor’s office to ask if I need to be seen for my continuing laryngitis.

  15. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

    It is 46 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 75. Sunny skies are in the forecast. Today 75, tomorrow 86. We will see seasonal temperatures (low 70s) by Sunday but they will arrive with some rain.

    I started this comment about an hour ago, thinking I would be able to read some news, and I ran out of time. Democrats are in disarray – thank goodness Nancy Pelosi is still in charge, she will sort things out.

    I have a hard deadline on October 1st that I need to prep for so I better get back to it.

    See all y’all later!

  16. It’s 61 heading for 89 & partly cloudy today. We start moving back to cooler weather tomorrow. With rain. Maybe – under 50% chances for the rest of the week. Yesterday we generated 11.2 KWHs with 320 m-t-d to start the last Tuesday in September.

    Major and minor irritants – and for some folks a lot of pain – seem to be hitting everybody but as far as I know everybody’s safe. Holding the Good Thought the safe continues and the irritants get dealt with. I’m adding a “safe, secure, comfortable” mantra to my “Healing Energy” mantra (not really mantras I just don’t know what to call what I do before my altar every day).

    Need to make a phone call, then over to twitter, then more phone calls. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  17. Good Tuesday morning, Meese. It’s cloudy but the weather seems unable to make up its mind as to whether it’s going to rain or not. The high is supposed to rise to 82 F. from a current reading of 65 F. Dearly has taken Monty out for a walkies.

    I am waiting for James Geek! He should be here any minute now! YAY!

    I do hope he can help me.

    Have a good day, Meese!
