Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: October 10th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Caribbean Matters:

  2. Good morning. Had a terrible night’s sleep, turned off my alarm & backup around 3:30 because I figured if I was asleep at 5:30, I need that sleep more than the walk. And then my laptop was recalcitrant, had to restart. And my work laptop is being super slow as well. So, ugh.

  3. Good Friday morning, Moosekind! For once we’ve awakened to a fair day—sunlight, blue sky beneath the cirrus clouds, and 64 F. at the moment. The high will be 83 F. today.

It was 38 years ago today that I got rid of cigarettes from my life. I hate to think what a pack costs nowadays: when I stopped, it was 55 cents. The only person in our family who smokes is Tiger Mom, and she does it in the backyard.

Tonight from 5 to 10 p.m. I will tend the Three Sisters. I’ve got hold of a book of nursery rhymes, annotated but evidently not edited, which looks to be great fun. We can each pick out nursery rhymes to act out and then we’ll look up the history. I’ve picked out “Ring Around the Rosy,” for one. It’s about the Black Death. While we’re doing this we’ll wear crazy hats, of which I happen to have a supply.

When I went to the Blue Ridge classroom yesterday, to my bone-dissolving horror there was a woman already ensconced, who was laying out materials on the table. I said I’d booked the room months ago—August, in fact. She then claimed she’d booked it in September. I booked with a Resident Life person named Kelsey, and the interloper had booked the room with Olga-from-the-Volga. Anyway, I stormed off to find the nearest Resident Life Person, who turned out to be Lisa. We found a much better room, bigger, with windows,, and a nice view. No one was using it until 4 p.m. so we movedright in and made ourselves at home. I passed around vitamins (actually M&Ms) in case anyone felt ready to faint with excitement. (Chocolate keeps people awake, you know.)

After a great meeting I came back and got in touch with Kelsey. She was amazed that there was a schedule conflict, considering she’d booked me already for that room 15 months in advance. Anyway, I asked for the larger room we’d occupied that day, so she gave it to me. She also let us have the room for 90 minutes rather than 60, considering we now have 14 writers in the group. I asked the writers whether they’d like to meet more often but they said once a month was quite sufficient. It helps that we circulate our writings by email before we meet, as there is more time for feedback.

Oh, well, enough of that. I feel a bit better today but still not much inclined to eat. Monty barfed again last night despite the area rugs I’d put down–he chose to barf on the carpet—so I’m not terribly pleased with him. We’d take him to the vet except that when we do, she always says, “Oh, he checks out just fine! Here’d an $80 prescription to make you feel better about him.” Gods.

Well, that’s enough from me this morning. Time for a shower, then exercise, then to Trader Joe’s she goes! Wishing a good day to all at the Moose Pond.

    • You have me beat – I have been smoke-free for 36 years, my anniversary is sometime in August, I think. I had always thought that if I knew for a fact that I was dying, I might want a cigarette as I passed – I have such an addictive personality the I cannot risk becoming re-hooked. I think after 36 years, I have lost even the interest in “one last puff.”

  4. It’s 62 going to 64 and can’t decide whether it’s going to clear off or rain some more. Yesterday we generated 3.4 KWHs – right at 5 total for the last 2 days combined. No, that doesn’t cover usage. We’re at 118.6 for the m-t-d.

I got almost 8 hours of sleep – was woke late from a heavy sleep by hungry cats at my door. sigh. Freddie made a break for it and is still outside. He hasn’t run off but he also won’t let me close enough to him to pick him up and bring him back in. This is where I regret the location of my computer. I can’t see the back door when I’m sitting at it. I don’t know why Freddie’s wanting out so much this last couple of weeks or so. The other cats certainly don’t want to.

Serious rollercoaster with Bobby yesterday. He’s been fighting LUMA for 10 months because they’ve charged him for the previous tenant’s unpaid balance. HUD had been letting it ride while he kept getting the runaround (“pay it, then appeal” – like right) but decided yesterday morning to give Bobby one week – til his birthday – to pay it off and get current. Roolz, you known. But over $1300? That HUD has to know isn’t his since HUD’s who placed Bobby in that apartment and should be his evidence to LUMA instead of threatening to evict him. Thank All That’s Holy somebody anonymously sent him the whole amount while a bunch of us were trying to get things together for an emergency fundraiser. He said the money should hit his account Monday and then it will be a “mad rush” to pay the bill, get the receipt, and show it to the HUD people.

I can get my Pfizer booster today but I’m going to call the pharmacist and see if I should wait until I finish this antibiotic. It’s Homecoming weekend and the party will start later today. If I’m going out it needs to be before noon.

    OK, coffee then over to twitter. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  5. Good morning, 53 and raining in Bellingham. The vent hood and the new cooktop are now in place, ad the touch up painting is blending with the old paint, whew! The tools have migrated to the back porch so we’re nearly back to normal. It’s taken a lot of work to make it look like nothing happened!

I’m reading The Girl in the Towernow, book # 2 in the series. It’s an easy read and a nice escape from reality. Makes me remember reading Grimms Fairy Tales when I was a child. Time for coffee and as always, my best wishes to all.

  6. Well Crap! Back to roller coaster for Bobby. Now that the LUMA thing is on its way to being dealt with, the HUD Admin showed up this morning with “gee, we’re sorry, COVID error, you owe us $790 due by next Wednesday or we evict you” – bastids. Aji about to start a fundraiser for him. It’s very unlikely the person who covered the LUMA grift can cover the HUD grift as well. sigh.

  7. Good evening, meeses! It is still Friday …

We had a mostly cool day with temperatures staying below 60. A bit of rain but not much.

I had a hectic but productive day and I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. By this time next week, the project I have been working on will be done and my life of leisure will return.

    See all y’all tomorrow!

  8. Saturday Meese – 63 here in Kingston going up to 75 with rain.

    Puerto Rico

I love my country. We light up without LUMA

People chant “Mentira, mentira, gobierno de mentiras” Lies, lies, a government of lies

  9. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

It is 41 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 57. Sunny skies are in the forecast. The furnace was turned on yesterday to take the morning chill out. I have to wear my slippers and sweats this morning!

The right-wing media is chortling over the notion that Illinois Democrats are “rewarding” Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger by redistricting him out of a job. Kinzinger may be a principled Republican but he is still a Republican and as such caucuses with Kevin McCarthy. “Rewarding” someone by giving up the majority was never really a possibility (I hope!). The blue states where Democrats control the redistricting, like Illinois and New York, are going to play hardball. They should – “being nice” and “doing the right thing” have no place in the current political climate because there is no upside to playing fair. When #FairMaps are mandated in all 50 states, fine – until then, take every advantage that the Roberts Court will give you.

The current news is nasty and ugly and I am glad that I have not been tapped into it. I can’t change what Manchin and Sinema do – probably no one can – and just like with Ben Nelson and Joe LIEberman in 2009, the nature of the Senate will always mean less robust legislation as ConservaDems are placated. We need to add three more Senators and then kill the filibuster if we want to make real progress.

I am trying to catch up on accounting projects but I keep getting distracted by the state of My Lists. I have too many right now and need to find one that reflects the current status of the things I need to do this weekend.

    See all y’all later!

  10. Cool morning, I slept in so I have to do my run/walk in the morning. Right now I’m eating breakfast & watching Ali Velshi on MSNBC. Good coverage on the Texas censorship story. Today: make breakfast & tea for next week, watch Captain Marvel this afternoon.

  11. It’s 39 going to 66 and sunny, finally. Yesterday we generated 5.68 KWHs – so 3 days combined not what a single good day in October – hopefully like today – can bring. The m-t-d is 124, definitely not on track.

I had trouble getting to sleep, didn’t manage until after midnight. Sort of made up for it by sleeping until almost 8. So I’m groggy, running late, and am having trouble convincing my fingers to hit the keys I want them to hit so typing is taking a whole lot longer. sigh.

I don’t know where anybody is on their various issues. I hope to heaven Bobby got what he needs overnight since his is the most immediate. Everybody else’s is important – just not due by Wednesday. I don’t know what or how we as nation are going to get out of this Deplorable mess. If we are.

    Oatmeal, coffee, and off to twitter. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

    • Update on Bobby. He made it! (Now Holding the Good Thought the Housing Admin doesn’t find any more bills the previous tenant didn’t pay to stick Bobby with.)

  12. Good morning, 53 and raining in Bellingham. The new appliances are in place, the contents of several kitchen cupboards are back in their now clean spaces, and just a few tools are left on the back porch, yay! This project got complicated and took more time than we expected but oh well. Such is life in an old house.

I hope I can work outside today. The ivy growing alongside the back steps needs to be trimmed and the plants growing around the patios need some attention. So weather permitting that’s where I’ll be soon. Best wishes to all.
