Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: November 7th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

Morning low of 43 degrees in Madison WI with an expected daytime high of 63. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

Don’t forget to turn your clocks back – Daylight Saving Time ENDS at 2:00 am Sunday Morning!!

Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Good Sunday morning Moosekind! This morning I left my bed at 4:30, which I calculated was Old-Time 5:30, a perfectly respectable time to be getting up. Now, at 6:57 a.m., we can see what kind of day of day it’s going to be—blue skies with swatches of white veiling, and sunny. Right now in Ashburn it’s 32 F., going up to mid- or high 50s.

The WaPo of course is full of worshipful articles about Dunkin’. He’d better NOT overreach—it he bans abortion or tries again with transvaginal ultrasounds for those seeking abortions, women will riot. Anyway, I hope Dunkin’ will flub up bigly in the next four years so he won’t be the Rethug presidential candidate in 2024.

Yesterday was a complete loss. I did manage to deal with email, go to the grocery store, and prepare a couple of meals. I needed the rest after a highly stressful and fatiguing week. My daughter in Texas informs me that she is not going to work any more 14-hour days as an election officer at the polls. It took her a couple of days to recover as well.

Am about to cook breakfast and at 10 a.m. will start the slow cooker beef stew. I may make an apple-walnut cake. The rest of the day will be devoted to laundry and reading the essays written by the writers in my group. We meet on Thursday.

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  3. Sunday Meese. 28 here in Kingston going up to 55. Since this s “fall back” day – my music diary is gonna be about time :)

    Puerto Rico

  4. Good morning. Had a really bad night’s sleep, so I was grateful for that extra hour. Flipping back & forth between the news & the NYC marathon. Yes, I watch marathons, when they televise them. Went to a gala last night where a friend was honored. It was nice, but very weird to be in an event that was like the old days.

  5. It’s 46 and may get up to 70 today. Sunny so it probably will. Not summer by any stretch but warmer this week than it has been. Yesterday we generated 6.98 KWHs and the 33.95 m-t-d is gaining.

The handle & latch came off my woodstove last night. I hope my son can fix it. I can’t. (I can put it back together but I can’t hit the little rod that holds it together hard enough to get it back into place.) If he can’t that will mean at least $100 to get the chimney and stove people out to do it. sigh.

Nobody’s doing good but everybody seems to be doing better. Some not a lot better, but better is still better. Even if better for me means limiting stuff I like to do online so my “mouse finger” will work well enough to do the work I want to do on twitter. sigh.

    Anyway, Sunday household chores and Sunday music as well as twitter chores. And finally back on ‘god’s time’ as the English used to – maybe still do – call it. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  6. Good afternoon, 46 and raining in Bellingham. We had a fun and loud family party last night celebrating our twins turning 50 yrs old. Erica joined in via face time, but I am still missing her actually being here. Hopefully we’ll have a real life birthday time with her at Thanksgiving.

I’m feeling weary, restless and happy, all at the same time. Best wishes to all.

  7. Monday Meese. 31 here in Kingston NY, going up to 61.

    Puerto Rico

    Another important case

  8. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

It is 48 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 64. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

I am still perplexed that Republican politicians are essentially recommending that their constituents get sick and die from a disease for which there is an effective vaccine. At some point, it seems like “my loved one died from a disease and didn’t have to” would cut into their approval ratings and certainly would reduce the number of living humans who can vote for them. Alas, America is a stupid country and the voters will likely punish the guy (and his party) whose administration managed the massive rollout of vaccinations that is making it safe to return to a nearly normal pre-pandemic life. Just like Barack Obama’s Democratic Party was punished for passing legislation that made Affordable Health Care a right, Joe Biden’s Democratic Party will be punished for successfully managing a pandemic that killed hundreds of thousands of Americans and cratered the economy. Goddess help us if the Republicans ever get the trifecta again – they will eliminate the filibuster (thank you, Joe Freaking Manchin!) and destroy what is left of democracy.

It is Monday, back to Standard Time which I wish would be the permanent time. Curse you, Congress, leave my clocks alone!! In Arizona, people woke up yesterday and did not have to change their clocks or worry about missing an important event or have people tell them than they “got an extra hour of sleep” which is bulldung. Actually, I got up at 3am because my body wakes me up at 4am. Same thing today. I think last time it took about a month before I was able to incorporate the new hour into my actual sleep pattern. In any event, I am ready to carpe diem – back to the early morning dark.

    See all y’all later!

  9. Good morning, chilly one here (needed a jacket); but this afternoon will be 75 so that’s nice. Working in the office today, sigh.

  10. It’s 45 heading for 71 and sunny today. Yesterday we generated 6.76 KWHs and the m-t-d is 40.66 – still gaining but very slowly.

Clouds are supposed to move in tomorrow so I am doing laundry today. Also planning to get a haircut today. After I call the place and make sure they’re still masking. I need to do major shopping this week. Most of which I’ll do tomorrow since as far as I know Aldi is still doing “senior” shopping on Tuesdays and Thursdays. My son was able to get the handle back on the wood stove. Not exactly as it came from the factory. I guess 10 years of use, expanding and contracting the metal even as little as cast iron does that, warped it a little. I have to push on the door itself before the handle will move. But I have welding/fireplace gloves so not a problem. (The fireplace gloves, if left by the stove when a fire is going, get really nice and warm. As good as a hot-sand treatment for my hands.)

It’s so nice to have the clock reflecting what the sun is. Daylight Savings Time is bad for people – but I guess the disorientation helps the manipulators enough to be worth the loss of productivity. To them. As far as I know everybody’s doing OK – not better, not worse, but OK.

    My hands are still being an issue. Probably will be more on than off until next summer. sigh. But if I skip playing Freecell and don’t use many/any emojis I can manage to boost what I want to boost without too much difficulty. Mostly. So off to Twitter to do so. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  11. Good morning, 44 and cloudy in Bellingham. It was nice to wake up to coffee with our daughter yesterday, but everyone is back home now so it’s just us in a very quiet house. RonK is sleeping late so I may have to find my own coffee.

My desk is waiting for me today so that’s where I’ll be soon. Best wishes to all.

    • I have determined that our desks are always waiting for us!! I never spend enough time at mine to get the little things caught up – by the time I finish the “must do” I am exhausted. I did get one little nagging project done but the list never seems to shrink.

      • Annoying, isn’t i8t? Just when I decided I had more than enough desk work to do, AOL is now threatening me with ugly happenings if I don’t do this or that to my Verizon email addresses. Lawks!

  12. Good Monday morning, Moosekind! It’s another gloriously sunny day in Ashburn, 61 F. as of 10:45 a.m., going up to 67 F. We had a terrible night. This morning I had to go back to bed from 7:30 to 8:30, and poor old Dearly will need to go back to bed as soon as he comes back from walking the dog.

Yesterday I felt better after a shockingly stressful week and managed to behave like a normal human being. Well, hey, I screwed up the apple cake, but it came out okay in the end. Anyway, yesterday I read through the essays my Writers’ Group submitted on the subject of major holidays. They were, by turns, funny, ironic, poetic, touching, and enlightening. Some people have had hard lives. This is an affluent retirement community, but when I read what some of them have been through, I can only feel glad that they triumphed.

I’m also touched that they seem to appreciate the Writers’ Group and don’t want to miss our monthly meeting. On top of that, the leader of the other group wants to visit our meeting on Thursday to find out why my group has attracted three people from her group. I said that was fine.

In other news, I want Congress to pass a law establishing standard time as the norm. This is ridiculous!

Bfitz, glad you’ve found a workaround for your woodstove, and princesspat, glad you had a good family feast. My own essay for the Writers’ Group, “Christmas at Barky Manor,” was on that same subject.

Have a lot of desk work to do today, so I need to make myself presentable for it. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  13. Tuesday Meese. 36 going up to 54 here in Kingston

    SCOTUS hearing Vaello-Madero

    • Beating DeSantis would be a triple blessing – hope for Florida, not having to see him in the 2024 presidential primary and getting his ugly mug off my TeeVee!!

  14. Puerto Rico

  15. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

It is 46 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 55. Mostly cloudy skies are in the forecast.

I am trying to not panic about the 2022 midterms because so much can happen in a year but the news is filled with doom and gloom. It is too bad that our craven click-bait media will not focus on the fact that Republicans are terrible people and deserve to be driven out of office, not rewarded with regaining control of Congress. In a just world, anyone recommending that we give power back to tRump would be laughed out of the room. Sadly, our world is not just.

I am going to focus on the things I can change – for example, I am enrolling in a new Medicare Advantage plan, one that allows me to choose hospitals and providers. I am extremely unhappy with the limited choices for ophthalmologists in my HMO and I have been nervous for a very long time about the HMO being affiliated with a Catholic religious order whose hospitals follow the “Keep ‘Em Alive Forever and Let God Sort It Out” plan for end of life care. I would not want to be on permanent life support, draining my savings and putting my family’s financial future at risk. So that’s done!

Busy day here as I have to figure out a new banking process and sort through some bills to make sure I am not missing anything. For the past few months, I was doing only what I needed to do to keep the lights on and now I have to go back through all that and make sure everything else is up to date.

    See all y’all later!

  16. Good morning. Slept in, I’m going to do my walk/run after the dermatologist appointment. Work from home day. So much better. I gave up on the news last night & watched Castle reruns, just couldn’t take hearing about the coup plot.

  17. It’s 56 going to 68 and cloudy. Yesterday we got 6.69 KWHs. The m-t-d is 47.36 – sort of gaining except it’ll lose ground again today. sigh.

Diddly sleep last night. sigh. I’m heading out to do my stock up shopping. As far as I know Aldi’s is still doing “senior/safe shopping” 8:30 – 9:00 so I need to get going. I haven’t a clue how anybody is today but as of last night not much different than yesterday morning. (Except Aji’s had some kind of allergic reaction that has her on pred.)

    I’ll check back later. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  18. Good glorious Tuesday morning, Meese! Right now at 10:30-ish we have 64 F. under sunlight, blue skies, the lot. Because our projected high temp. is 72 F., I’ve washed three area rugs and draped them on the porch to dry. The longest one, the Monty-green-barfed one, is the one I’m most concerned about. (Yes, he did it again this morning, this time at 3 a.m. instead of 4 a.m.)

I’ve begun getting ready for bed at 9 p.m., popping into it at 9:30, and then falling asleep over my book until 10 p.m. Last night I did have to take a 3 mg Melatonin pill but at least that’s not as Alzheimers’-inducing as the others. Rose at 5 after five hours of good sleep and two hours of fitful sleep.

Feeling rather excited because I’ve decided to submit Chapter 9 of Iron and Scarlet to a contest. It has to be 6000 words or under and previously unpublished. I put the first eight chapters on my website but Chapter 9 has never seen the light of day, except by yrs truly. Usually this is a futile exercise but hey, it might be just the kick in the pants I need to finish the book.

Haven’t been to the gym in weeks because of being so wretchedly busy. However, housework does have some rewards. This morning as I removed the first load of jeans and shirts from the dryer, I found a somewhat crumpled but very clean dollar bill. Laundered money! I chuckled rudely and stashed it in a jar where I keep bills and change for the grandchildren’s savings accounts. One day I’ll get around to rolling all that stuff up and taking it to the bank.

May everyone enjoy a productive, qujiet day at the Pond!
