Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: November 14th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good morning, meeses! Wednesday …

It is 46 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 48. Cloudy skies are in the forecast. My phone weather widget said that there was going to be light rain this morning but if it rained, it happened before I got up.

I was trying to figure out why Joe Biden’s approval rating is so low. Even if you subtract out the 30% deadenders who still think that tRump had the election stolen, that does not explain the disapproval. I suspect it is a mixture of “why can’t Biden make the pandemic go away” and the bloom coming off the rose of any “new” thing. We are all weary and this is Thanksgiving #2 with restrictions because there are too many unvaccinated people and it is not completely safe to travel or gather. A lot of people who want jobs have them – and many have some extra cash from unspent Biden bucks – but they can’t find the things that they want to spend their money on (cars appliances home improvement projects). And people are angry, angry that the fast food restaurant is understaffed (or closed), angry that they are on hold with stupid people trying to get simple things done, angry that gas prices are high, angry that they are working longer hours because of labor shortages in their own place of employment. Joe Biden can’t make members of the #RepublicanDeathCult get vaccinated so he can’t end the pandemic. He can’t fix the supply chain issues quickly – you can’t restart a multi-trillion-dollar economy from a dead stop to pre-pandemic speeds without fits and starts. And he can’t make people less angry because we are an ADHD society and we do not do “Wait” or “Please try to understand” very well. I just hope things turn around before the mid-terms because I am not sure I can bear being under complete Republican control again in Wisconsin and have Congressional progress grind to a halt. Mask mandates and shutdowns saved our lives last year – Republican control would have resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands more people.

It is Wednesday and I have enough errands run from Monday and Tuesday that I think I can spend the day in my office working on a couple of stacks of paper that accumulated while I was busy on eyes-forward projects. It looks like I did not miss any critical bills but there is some payment documentation that I can’t find and which I should track down. I hope to get my scanning projects cranked up again because that is the way to deal with the stacks – scan, store/shred. I cannot let paper and boxes take control of my life again and that will require staying on top of things.

    See all y’all later!

  2. Good morning. Another warm one, high in the 80s, but we have a cold front coming overnight. I’ll need long sleeves tomorrow. Haven’t been walking because the dermatologist has me putting some fluo-something cream on my forehead that is very insistent about washing your hands after applying — so the idea of sweating…… Anyway, today is just work.

  3. Good Wednesday morning, Moose Peeps! It’s 39 F. in Ashburn right now under cloudy skies. It’s supposed to get up to 65 F. today with sunshine, so I thought this would be a good drying day. Accordingly, I washed the barf rugs and put them on the screened porch to dry.

Had a sketchy (using the word in its original sense) night’s sleep, so am feeling cross this morning and eager to find fault with everything. After a 4:30 wakeup and a final get-out-of-bed at 5:30, it’s easy to feel mean.

Also feeling a bit pissed off because my credit score went down a point. Why do they take it down because you’ve made a payment? I’ll never understand it and wish they would all go straight to Hades.

This morning I should type yesterday’s notes from the next-door neighbor interview. It was very amusing. They have a fake cat on their footstool! It’s so realistic that for a moment I thought it was merely asleep. Gods, the weird things people have in their houses.

Still need to get washed and brushed so I can start my day. Y’all play naicely naow (she said Southernly). Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  4. It’s Wednesday. Also “payday” which is a good thing. It’s 64 heading for 66, gonna top out by 1 pm and start relatively steeply down as the front moves in. The clouds already have – we got maybe half hour of sunny and bright as the sun came up over the hill to the east. Yesterday we got 6.19 KWHs bringing the m-t-d to 99 – so we’ll at least get over 100 today. But not much over.

Jill is in so much better shape mentally/emotionally now she’s had contact with her son and knows where he is. Even knowing her husband is probably in the same town she’s in – and just far enough away from the place she was planning on going to be Order of Protection legal – can’t bring her down from that. Amelia heard last night that a very dear friend/almost 2nd mom died a few days ago. Just a few months after the husband. Which devastated the family including “family” like Amelia and her sister but surprised no
one because they were that devoted a couple. Everybody else is either hanging on or not telling anybody that they aren’t.

I went out yesterday – got gas and managed to get stamps, cold meds, and some more turkey sausage (boring and almost tasteless but edible and nutritious) for breakfast all at the same grocery store. Usual thing around here – clerks wearing masks, customers mostly not. Even though there are signs all over the place asking them to. I also bit the bullet and have requested estimates from a couple of cleaning companies via angi’s list – and an actual (I think on-site) interview with the 5-star one. At least they’ve been vetted by somebody even if not a personal recommendation. Of course, now I’m on angi’s list of people to send email offers to. sigh. But if I can afford it, I’m going to get that deep cleaning and see if that helps with the sinusitis any. The cold meds added to the “normal” saline spray and vick’s on the feet helped some last night. I did get to sleep (barely) before midnight instead of after and a good 5 hours followed by another 1-1/2 dozing. I think my hands are better. I think.

    Anyway, off to twitter. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

    • What brand of turkey sausage is “boring and almost tasteless”? We eat turkey sausage and enjoy it quite a bit. We don’t eat beef and got used to turkey patties as a substitute and started eating the sausages as well.

      • Only brand in my store is Jimmy Dean. I suppose it’s really not that bad. It’s just bland and almost tasteless compared to the pork sausage I used to mix when I could still get lean ground pork (consistently & not having to find & ask the meat dept manager for a special batch). Mine has a lot of sage in it and enough cayenne you can tell it’s there without actually being hot. LOL.

  5. Good morning, 31 and light clouds in Bellingham. We are warm and dry but Whatcom County is still flooded so many people are not as fortunate. The freeway is open again but so many roads are closed in and around us it’s best to just stay home. But that seems to be our new normal. I’m going to sew today and in between zoom meetings RonK is raking very wet leaves away from the house. The lawn service pickup will be delayed because of flooding but the leaves are to soggy to blow away so they can just wait on the lawn. Best wishes to all.

  6. Good morning, meeses! Thursday …

It is 28 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 34. Mostly cloudy skies are in the forecast.

The defense in the Rittenhouse case is getting a little nervous because the jury asked to have the video that showed Puffy Cheeked FauxCryer pointing his weapon at friends of murder victim Rosenbaum which appears to be what caused him to chase after Rittenhouse. They are now claiming that they did not see the enhanced drone video and that if they had seen it, they might have changed their defense strategy – cause for mistrial! Although that one would be unlikely to be with prejudice (meaning it could be retried) unless the Judge PuffHimselfUp goes completely rogue – which is not impossible. Like I said, I hope there are federal charges here and if not, that Rosenbaum’s family sues Rittenhouse for every penny he will ever earn from his right-wing celebrity.

Rep. Gosar’s censure is not enough – he should be removed from the House. That he retweeted the video that led to his censure is deplorable. That he is not being interviewed by the Secret Service and charged with threatening the president is despicable. That Kevin McCarthy is okay with it should be disqualifying.

Okay, back to it. I have an on-site client visit today that I need to prep for and then hit the road.

    See all y’all later!

  7. Puerto Rico

  8. Good morning. Cool enough for long sleeves, tomorrow will be jacket weather. Working in the office today. Nothing much going on.

  9. Happy Thursday or something. :) It’s 39 heading for 54 on a so-far sunny day. (& one of my younger cats loudly wants OUt-OUt-OUt.) He’d accept me opening the carport door so he could climb up on top of it but it’s too chilly for that. Sez I as the heat kicks on again. Yesterday got a little more sun than projected and generated 4.46 KWHs bring the m-t-d to 103.6 – not on track for 180. sigh.

I’ve got an appointment for someone to come out and deep clean. We’ll see how that goes. If well, I’ll ask what just doing the floors and bathroom would cost, both as a regularly scheduled thing and an on-call thing. If not, I won’t. This is giving me the push to “tidy” and throw stuff out. Which is so very hard for me to do. (In the back of one drawer I was emptying I found 2 unopened packages of tan pantyhose! What the heck am I going to do with those? They’re not opened so I don’t want to throw them out but who wears pantyhose any longer?)

    Details change, situations a whole lot aren’t. For anybody it seems. We’ll see how long we can hold on. Meanwhile I haven’t a clue if any of the stuff any of us are doing is helping, but it’s worth a try. And on that note, off to Dee’s diary and Twitter. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

    • Why not give the pantyhose to an organization that helps disadvantaged women apply for jobs? They help with resumes, clothes, hairstyles, and whatnot. Of course, who knows what’s going on with that sort of thing post-pandemic?

Even though there is more freedom now and even though I bought some new, larger bras, I still hate to wear them. I’ll have to do what my friend does: she hasn’t worn a bra in 30 years. She wears boys’ “singlets”—you know, those ribbed undershirts that look like tank tops.

    • Pantyhose, ha! I remember an episode of a cop show set in Miami where they caught the killer because of them. She was from New England and didn’t know that women don’t wear them down here.

  10. Good Thursday morning, Meese. Had the night from HELL last night, despite nodding off at 10 p.m. and taking an “Ollie.” Got 3 hours’ sleep, had to get up, still awake at 2, got up and read until 3, then went to sleep in the green chair from 3 till 6:30 a.m. I feel like hell but I have a dentist appointment at 3:30. I was going to leave here early so I could do some shopping beforehand but may decide against it.

Still doing bits of writing. I think one more round of changes will put the Staff Appreciation Fund article to bed. Did I mention my building contributed the most, 88 percent? Yay, Birch Point!

Last night I saw the beautiful, almost-full moon hanging like a silver Christmas ornament in the black velvet sky. Glad I did see it, for They say it will rain after sunset tonight. Right now it’s another gorgeous, golden autumn day, 65 F. now in Goddess-forsaken Loudoun County, going up to 71 F.

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  11. A late good morning from wet and chilly Bellingham where it’s 38 and raining again. It’s light rain, but enough to ad to the misery of those dealing with flooded homes and businesses. Over the border in BC is even worse with Vancouver and neighboring communities completely cut off. We are very fortunate to be warm and dry.

I’ve rested my morning away so now I now to get busy with Tday prep, desk work, and maybe an hour or so in the garage. The new shelving units are in place now and all the dirty glass vases are washed and ready to be put away so step by step my floral area is nearly done. I’m feeling very grateful to have a nicer and warmer space for my flower fun. Best wishes to all.

  12. Good morning, meeses! Friday that feels like a Saturday …

It is 25 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 37. Sunnyish skies are in the forecast.

I was not tapped into the news much yesterday as I was traveling but I did catch the news that the Oklahoma governor was shamed into commuting the death sentence of Julius Jones. His own clemency commission recommended commutation twice but “vengeance is mine” sayeth the bloodthirsty red state governors! That the death penalty is still in place anywhere is a blemish on the soul of our nation but in this particular case there has been some suggestion of innocence and the commission felt Jones had the right to continue pursuing it. I’m glad that he will have a chance.

The news headlines on Build Back Better were confusing to me – the CBO says it will add to the deficit, the strange Democratic Congressman from Maine who votes against most Democratic bills said he will vote against BBB, one headline said it was Good News for Joe Biden (I am not sure if that was snark!). Anyway, I will ignore the sausage making as there is literally no news there. Of more concern is that we have to face the freaking debt limit again in mid-December, just in time to bum out holiday shoppers who are fueling the economic recovery. Grrr!

I woke up this morning with an idea about what I wanted to do and then stared at my to-do list unsure of where to begin. I will see if there is anything easy I can knock off the list. I am already gearing down for Thanksgiving week so I may set the list aside and just putter around.

    See all y’all later!

  13. Friday Meese. It’s raining hard, windy and cold here in Kingston – 39 going up to 46.

  14. Chilly enough for a sweatshirt. Working in the office today. We’re quietly opening the phone lines for 2 hours a day, next week will be 4, then in December, it’ll be back to 8. Sigh.

  15. Good Friday morning, Moosekind! It’s cold and windy here in Ashburn, but sunny. It’s 42 F. at the moment, going up to 46 F. later. This morning when I went out with Monty shortly after 5 a.m. I saw the end of the eclipse of the Moon! LOL, there was a large piece missing from Her right side. Tried to photograph it but my phone is rather crappeh, so I couldn’t do it. Anyway, they say that was the longest eclipse of the moon since 1465. Whom do we know from that era? Oh well, Richard III (he of unjustly maligned reputation) was two years old then.

Yesterday I went to the dentist and oh, dear Goddess! I have osteoporosis of the TEETH, if you please. I said yes to the X-rays, so while the dental assistant ecstatically took 50 photos of my teeth and gums she continued to lecture me on what I’m facing. The dentist then came in, said I have an infection, and will need a root canal in front and probably a root canal in the upper back part. Merry Christmas I don’t think!

At least I’ll get to eat Thanksgiving dinner. Have been reading up on the side effects of Fosamax and Reclast. Comparing the two treatments, Reclast has it all over Fosamax, because at least it’s just once a year. I scorned hormone replacement therapy but at least those hormones help prevent osteoporosis. All this makes me more determined than ever to get things done before I pop my clogs.

But enough about my medical condition. Yesterday I was able to get the photo of my neighbors scanned by our photographer, who confided that she’d just bought a marvelous, powerful new software version of Photoshop or something. So that’s sorted. Now to just finish writing the article so I can get it in for review. I’d like to meet all my deadlines before this root canal thing on December 3rd.

Other than that, ever-thang seems jest fine today. We may have a vote on the BBB bill! May the crusty curse of Oliver Cromwell fall upon Kevin McCarthy’s poxy penis.

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond. There’s a full moon tonight for those living in normal areas!

  16. It’s 28 heading for 56 and sunny at the moment. Still too which is helpful since I’ve had to go outside twice already (dealing with litterbox detritus). I need to go get milk but I’ll do that after it warms up some. We generated 6.59 KWHs yesterday and start the day with the m-t-d at 110 – on track for 180 but just barely.

I totally spaced yesterday and missed Aji’s 4th anniversary. I am totally pissed at myself because I’ve been waiting all month, planned on sending a clip of “their song” to be waiting for when she got online, all that. Other than that either everybody’s OK or everybody’s too worse to spend time talking about it. I will hope for the former – and keep my “prayers up” for them all.

    My hands are cold. But at least not “Raynaud’s white” any longer. Hopefully they’ll stay functional today. Off to twitter. To find out. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  17. Good morning, 37 and light clouds. Yesterday afternoon the rain was heavy and cold and I felt very grumpy. Hope I can stay focused today rain or shine. I want to cut the last of the hydrangeas and bring them indoors to dry today. They look a bit rough this time of year but I love them anyway. Best wishes to all.

  18. Good Saturday moaning, Meese. I use the word “moaning” advisedly because I am still completely outraged and disgusted by the verdict yesterday. It was corrupt, irresponsible, and the opposite of justice. All I can say is, “White guys, he’s coming for YOU!” He’ll kill again before long because he knows it’s perfectly okay.

Let us pray the victims’ families will sue the pants off the pimply little {insert bad word).

Well, the good news is that it’s clear at the moment and 25 F. Today it will go up to 50 F., whoopee. Pleased to report that I saw the Moon last night and again this morning. In fact , at this writing, 7:15 a.m., She’s still hangin’ around, although fading fast. I’ve seen more of Her these last few days than all year long.

Finished one story for the quarterly and dispatched it to the Powers That Be. Today must work on the other story plus the writing assignment I gave everyone at our last meeting. The subject is “an intense experience.” I’ve had many such, but I’ll write about the most printable one.

Have had no luck getting a dog sitter for two hours on Thanksgiving day. I only need one from 5 to 7 p.m. Healthy Hound is booked solid through December 28, apparently, and our usual sitter will be celebrating Thanksgiving herself. Dearly Beloved says we should feed him, make sure he goes out before we leave, set the TV to his favorite program, and let him just rip up all the furniture and everything as he pleases. I think this is a very bad idea. It’s unfortunate that the family dogs all loathe each other so we can’t take him with us.

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.
