Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: February 27th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. It’s 56 heading for 73 and sunny at the moment although the widget says clouds will be moving in by noon. Yesterday we didn’t get quite 13 KWHs but close enough that combined with the previous 2 days of over 13 the m-t-d is 39 – and still on track.

    The shingles are getting better. Not good by any stretch of the imagination but better. NP offered more drugs but wasn’t insistent as we’re in the 3rd week and anti-virals are really only effective if started in the 1st 48 hours. I missed that window which is why they didn’t do as good a job as they could have. Taking them now would just upset my tummy for very little if any benefit. The last 2 days have been too warm for fires in the evening but today’s temps will drop by sundown. So I’ll do laundry today and hang it in front of the stove. I was doing too much stuff in the morning to do laundry and hang it outside to dry. Winter’s not over yet even though it feels like it. My treadmill got here last night – 7:20 pm – fortunately not too heavy for me to move since the UPS guy propped it against the door. I may try to assemble it myself or I may wait until my son can come over tomorrow. Blasted instructions are printed in type too small for me to read. I can probably guess at it and get it right, but I’d rather not if I don’t have to. At least the warm weather we’ve had means my hands are better. And for whatever reason the sinusitis let up yesterday/over night. NP is putting in a referral for an ENT visit. Might as well see if there actually is something that can be done about it.

    Everybody’s hanging on. From Amelia at the personal level to the Ukraine at the international level. And fighting as best they can in whatever circumstances they find themselves.

    Aji didn’t post until after I got offline yesterday so I need to get over there and boost it. Then on to my “usual” twitter chores. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  2. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

    It is 36 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 55. Rain is in the forecast.

    The war from Ukraine is sobering. From the giddiness of “wow, they are resisting a world power!” to the sad realization that the Russians are taking city after city and bombing the crap out of every square inch of the country. I never felt the giddiness, it sounded like cable news “fill the space” talk. The reality is that Russia has no plans to stop bombing and destroying everything in Ukraine until they roll into Kyiv, install their puppet government and dare the Ukrainian people to challenge them. A county of 44 million people can be subdued if they see that the alternative is that they are murdered in their sleep by bombs and their water treatment plants and power plants are destroyed. Hindsight is 20-20 but it is clear that the world should have challenged Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 – when a bully punches you and takes your lunch money, if you look the other way he will be emboldened and take everyone’s lunch money. Now a pathological war criminal is on the doorstep of NATO. I don’t want war in Europe (I don’t want war anywhere!) but letting Putin destroy Ukraine and threaten Germany and Sweden and Finland is an existential crisis for the western democracies.

    The Republicans are so transparent! They want the U.S. to ban the importation of Russian oil and gas so that they can make the claim that we need more shale oil drilling (and probably to open up ANWAR). I believe that gas prices are being artificially manipulated; I am old enough to remember when a news report of a crisis in the Mideast caused pump prices to go up which of course is bull and was eventually called out. The prices at the pump should not reflect future costs and the fossil fuel industry should get called out again. And the administration is right – oil is fungible – if we don’t buy Russian oil, someone else will. Us not buying it is not a sanction. What we should do is move more quickly into renewable energy, drive less and not need Putin’s oil. Goddess, I wish Bernie Sanders had not ratfked the 2016 election – we lost 4 years of progress towards energy independence. :(

    I have arrived at another weekend and I really need to kick myself into gear and make progress on personal projects. I took my foot off the gas after I got taxes out the door and my accounting systems cut over to 2022 but I have some hard deadlines looming. I am sleeping like crap – waking up way too early with a head full of things to do and then running out of steam by 9am. I need to figure out how to get revved up to work on mindless projects in the afternoon (sorting, scanning, shredding, storing). I used to nap on my couch after lunch but my comfortable napping couch was downsized and we are using makeshift living room furniture right now. I have been waiting to buy a new comfortable sofa until I have the dimensions of my new living space determined. First world problems!

    See all y’all later!

  3. Saturday Meese. 21 here Kingston NY going up to 41.

    Puerto Rico

  4. Good Saturday morning, Meese! It’s 37 F. and kind of blah-cloudy outside in Ashburn. We might get up to 63 F. by mid-afternoon. Who cares?

    Feeling gobsmacked by more than Ukraine at the moment. Yesterday the little, badly spelled publication put out by the “Resident Life” counselors contained a calendar of upcoming holidays. Pagan holidays were listed! How ’bout that? Some weeks ago I emailed the Inclusive Religions Committee honcho that I am a Wiccan High Priestess who led a circle in the Herndon area of Fairfax County for 16 years. I’m sure her head exploded.

    Must hurry to get a few chores done because Miss Pink Cheeks may arrive at lunchtime for a long overdue visit! Haven’t seen her to really talk to in ages.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  5. Good morning. Warm here, going to schedule my errands so I can walk this afternoon. Got to enjoy 70 degree days. Meanwhile, watching the news, eating breakfast. Have a good day, y’all.

  6. It’s 62 heading for 69 and no wind so it actually feels warm outside. Dark. The lights are on. For a surprise so is the PV system. Generating at 15 watts/hour. Yesterday we generated 11.58 KWHs and the m-t-d is 51 – not quite on track but close. We’ll lose more ground today. And we’ve got less than a 35% chance of getting rain out of these clouds. Sigh.

    Letting Russia have the Crimea was as stupid as letting Hitler move into the Rhineland, annex Austria, and take Sudetenland just about rolled into one. And that can’t be blamed on twitler. Obama was a very good president but he did not then and does not now have Hillary’s foreign relations chops. John Kerry certainly doesn’t. The Rs were already aligning with Hitler/Putin but that’s no reason why we should have helped them. But it’s too late to do anything about that now. Now we’d better support Ukraine in every way we can or we will have WWIII as Putin uses the resources and geographical location of the Ukraine to move into Europe proper. I don’t know which eastern European country is next in his sights, but I know they all are in his sights.

    My sinusitis is kicking up again – maybe it reacts to humidity? Or barometric pressure? Hands can’t decide whether or not they want to work. Could be the same causes. Or not. Shingles won’t go away. And the NSAIDs are getting less effective by the day. sigh. Oh well. This too shall pass. Big scary thing with Jill that can’t be talked about but could use Good Thoughts/prayers/whatever. Amelia is still recovering from various otherwise “ordinary” things – rent, plumber visit – things that are minor stressors for folks who don’t have CFS and are major events for those who do. Other folks, other issues. But all caused by health issues and lack of money. (Well, both Jill and Aji are dealing with stalkers – White Light protect them both from harm – on top of the health and money issues.)

    My son will be over this afternoon to put the treadmill together. The instructions are adamant about not trying to do it alone so I didn’t. I’m going to save the cardboard it came in – or at least a large sheet of it – to cover the walking platform and protect the belt from kitty claws. Meanwhile, laundry to put up and twitter chores to do. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  7. Good morning, I woke up to see fog outside my window but now it’s 42 and partly sunny so if I can stay motivated I’ll be outdoors soon. Sorry I’ve been absent from our moose pond, but life, health and the ugly situation in Ukraine seems to have overwhelmed me. Quiet and rest helps the fatigue that comes with stress so no worries, I’ll be ok once I can start doing more.

    It the rush of birthday doings and house stuff I bumped into a dresser with my BCH leg and the resulting bruise is slow to heal so I’ve had to keep my leg really elevated and I’ve given up trying to type with my arms over my head. Fortunately elevation still helps reduce swelling and increase circulation in my leg but it’s boring and makes me grumpy!

    So today’s task is to find some replacement pots for the terracotta ones that didn’t survive the rain and then freeze we had this winter. The rolled rims that give the pots so much character have flaked and fallen off two of them, and the third has a deep crack. I bought them years ago and may not be able to just replace them so grumpy me is trying to be open to something new :)

    Best wishes to all as we find our way through this day.

    • {{{princesspat}}} I’m glad you’re doing better. Good luck with finding just the right terracotta pots for your garden. Healing Energy & moar {{{HUGS}}}

  8. Good morning, another warm one. Will wear sandals to church today, but there is another cold front coming so can’t close up the coat closet yet. Wearing my shirt with daisies on it, close enough to sunflowers, right? Got lunch for the week made yesterday (rice, vegetables, plain yogurt, cheese), and cooked the vegetables I’ll add to the spaghetti I’ll have for dinner. This morning, tea for the week is already steeping, so all that’s left is making the overnight oats. So I will get out and walk in our 80 degrees this afternoon. No, really.
