Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: March 20th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good morning, another cold one here – 46 degrees. But a high in the mid 70s. Yesterday, my shoe fell apart while I was at work, that was fun. I rubber-banded it together to get home. Hoping I can super glue it together. First world problem, I know, but having a pair of brown shoes is nice.

  2. Friday Meese. 41 going up to 60 here in Kingston and we will see some sun (it’s been raining all night)
    I needed something to celebrate

  3. Puerto Rico

  4. It’s 35 going up to 60 and sunny today. Yay! Yesterday we got enough bits and pieces of sunshine to generate 8.4 KWHs bringing the m-t-d to 246.7 – we’ve got 7 days to get it up over 300 at least. If we can get at least 4 sunny days we can do it.

I got 3.5 hours of “good” sleep and maybe another of light dozing. Yes, I feel groggy. I’m hoping breakfast, which I just finished, will help. I’ve done 10 minutes on the treadmill and need to do 20 more. Which won’t be done in a single session. And I’m vacuuming today – once I get up all the boxes and cat toys and food dishes and chunks of shredded cardboard too big for the vacuum to pick up. I swear it takes as long to get ready to vacuum than actually do it.

I’ll believe we’ll get Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson on SCOTUS when it happens. We have traitors in our midst – and no wiggle room. All the folks I know of are doing about as they were yesterday. So’s Ukraine. And COVID. And global warming. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody everywhere.

    Heading over to twitter to “set up” before I get back on the treadmill or start picking up boxes. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

    • Joe Manchin has released a statement saying that he will vote to confirm Judge Jackson. No word yet from his evil twin Kyrsten Sinema. She might just sink the nomination because she thrives on attention and does not care if it is negative (she probably realizes that she will be primaried out of her seat in 2024). It will be nice to have a justice on the Supreme Court who identifies as Black and has Black lived experiences – we have not had one since Thurgood Marshall retired.

      • I saw that Manchin said he’s voting for her. I also saw folks on twitter saying that “guarantees” she’s in – all forgetting about Sinema. rto doesn’t think Sinema cares about getting in again. She’s gotten the “Senator cred” to get a really good RW lobbyist job and she’ll make more at that than as a Senator. We shall see what we shall see.

  5. Good morning, 43 and cloudy outside my window today. Our son was here working in the garage yesterday so I was outdoors with both company and assistance. He is sorting all the stored wood and old house parts, getting rid of what we don’t need to keep and organizing what we do need so it is accessible again. I got the pile of saved boxes broken down to one full box, hoses in one garbage can, tools in another, etc. It was nice to ne outdoors doing things again. Just wish my legs were not still complaining.

The new pots arrived yesterday and they will be fine for now, but I’m going to keep looking for something with more character. These are practical, but look of old and aged terracotta is hard to replace.

    Best wishes to all.

  6. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

It is 28 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 36. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast. It looks like it will be a dry weekend.

So now it appears that Russia is declaring “Mission Accomplished” in Ukraine, saying that their focus has always been on the Donbas and Luhansk regions in the east not the port cities bombed into rubble or the capital in Kyiv. I guess if it gives them the opportunity to retreat and save face it is better than them continuing their attack but it seems foolish to reward them for their invasion by ceding those provinces to them. If you give the bully part of your lunch money, he knows that you are willing to give up money – it is just a matter of how much. He will be back.

Ginni Thomas. Yikes. It is too bad that there is no way to compel a Supreme Court justice to recuse himself in a case – it is all up to the individual justice because they are supposedly filled with integritude. Clarence Thomas should not rule on any January 6th case, period, and his wife should be treated just like any other insurrectionist – questioned, charged and imprisoned.

I got some big things off my to-do list this past week and today I will focus on some important accounting projects that need to be done by the end of March. The 31st lands on a weekday so I need to get as much month end stuff done now when I can control my schedule.

    See all y’all later!

    • It turns out that there is a statute that compels Thomas to recuse himself:

Supreme Court Justices aren’t bound by the judicial code of conduct that applies to all other federal judges, which mandates that they recuse themselves from participating in any cases in which personal entanglements could cause a fair-minded member of the public to doubt their impartiality. Yet Justices are subject to a federal law that prohibits them from hearing cases in which their spouses have “an interest that could be substantially affected by the outcome of the proceeding.” The statute, 28 U.S.C. section 455, also requires them to disqualify themselves from any proceedings in which their “impartiality might reasonably be questioned.”

The question, of course, is who would enforce it – but at least there is something that could be enforced.

  7. Saturday Meese. 39 degrees here in Kingston, NY going up to 50 with rain.
I needed to find a way to vent my anger and rage over the treatment of Judge KBJ – it’s been really hard to watch. The whole issue of marriage resurfacing has me deeply disturbed too

I joined my husband watching March Madness College basketball to detox (we rooted for underdog St. Peters – who won)

    Puerto Rico/USVI

    • Your Twitter time-line had some good information about St. Peter’s, things that I did not know! My experience with Jesuit schools is that if there are enough actual Jesuits teaching, they aren’t terrible. If they are Jesuit in name only, they are usually pretty right-wing and not very friendly to people who disagree with the Church’s teachings.

  8. Good Saturday morning, Meese! It’s 47 F. and overcast. We are in the market for a thoroughly nasty afternoon, so I hope Dearly will walk the dog before noon. I have to Google what “graupel” means—little bits of sleet? Anyway, our high today will allegedly be 52 F.

My problems are minuscule compared to what others are going through, but I’m sighing at the thought of yet another wasted day. I never thought my damned bladder would keep me from doing things. Up in the wee (literally) hours of the night, back to bed, unable to sleep. Next day: falling asleep constantly, even at the keyboard, unable to focus on what needs to be done. Gripe, gripe, gripe. And yet I’m afraid to take drugs all the time because of what they do to the brain.

Well, never mind all that. If I do nothing else I need to clean up this total wreck of a place just so I can think.

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond, and an infestation by the fleas of a thousand diseased pariah dogs for Messrs. Graham, Cruz, Hawley-Crawley, and others of that ilk.

  9. We are having the kind of weather that makes visitors decide to move here. Then our 6-month summer hits. But for now, my window is open, letting in the 55 degree fresh air. It’ll get up to 90 this afternoon. Today: groceries, cooking & maybe re-watch the 1st season of Bridgerton before I watch season 2. (you can do the streaming services affordably if you do them 1 at a time & 1 month at a time, they sometimes cut you a break when you’re turning it off)

  10. It’s 44 going to 64 and sunny again. Yay! Yesterday we generated 17.98 which brought the m-t-d to 264.8 – 2 more days like yesterday gets us to 300. We shall see what we shall see.

Not much sleep again last night. I’m moving slowly today. Part of that’s tremors – vacuuming yesterday and all that – but part of it’s brain fog. Fortunately the sunshine helps the latter. And my hands are managing to do what I want them to do thus far so that part’s good.

I hope nobody falls for Putin’s “we just wanted a couple of pieces of Ukraine” – that’s right up there with Hitler’s “I have no more territorial ambitions” – and will have the same result if we do fall for it.

    I haven’t checked in with anybody yet. I hope everybody’s OK. Or at least hanging on. Holding the Good Thoughts and all that. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  11. Good morning, 44 and light rain. I was outdoors again yesterday and to my surprise my legs are not complaining. I moved some heavy pots and spread gravel under and around my potting bench so I expected a different response today. This last garage cleanup is the worst and we’ve put it off so it’s good to be nearly done. When we are able to repair the walls and doors we’ll have to move things again but it will be easier now that everything is sorted and stored properly. RonK and I will do a bit more today, making room for our son to repair the bottom of the wood storage unit and a foundation leak next week. Best wishes to all.
