Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.
Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).
The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.
So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?
…
NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …
Morning low of 55 degrees in the Desert Southwest with an expected daytime high of 93. Sunny skies are in the forecast.
Have a great day, all y’alls!!
Golly, where are you, Jan? Arizona?
Sunday Meese. 37 and raining here in Kingston NY, going up to 48.
Puerto Rico
Agree that privatizing essential utilities is a bad idea.
Warm & muggy here, ahead of (we hope) rain on Monday & Tuesday. I’ve got tea steeping — love how it makes my apartment smell. Watching the news, later I’ll make overnight oats and then church. And I swear I’m going for a walk this afternoon.
Funny thread about how much pollen is in the air here. Oak pollen – just oak, there’s about a dozen other pollens besides – is 7,000 parts per cubic meter.
Black Music Sunday posted
It’s 65 heading for 80 and sunny. At the moment anyway. Widget says clouds will move in later. I hope a lot later – like after sundown. Yesterday we almost made it to 20 – 19.9 KWHs – and the m-t-d of 139 gained a bit towards getting back on track. We shall see what today brings.
I got a bit over 6 hours of decent sleep. (Including a sort of scary dream about being somewhere in a strange city with Dee. We’d separated and were supposed to meet up later but I got lost and my phone suddenly broke, as in I could use it but I couldn’t get into my contacts list to get her number. Fortunately some kind soul was helping me with my phone and it seemed as if things were going to be OK when I woke up.) I had a bad spate with my hands yesterday but they were OK by end of day. The shingles rash is gone but the skin’s still red so I’ll be waiting a bit longer for that $180 vax. I haven’t connected with anybody yet today but as of last night Amelia had gotten up the energy to do some “creative cooking” because it was too hot for grocery delivery, Jill was still being harassed by her husband and trashed by her son, Aji was still in a lot of pain and needing a lot of sales, and some sweet soul sent Fineena a DoorDash egift so she could get the Chinese food she was craving. Holding the Good Thoughts for them – and everybody in Moosesylvania – and really, everybody everywhere.
I’ve done the bathrooms and stripped the bed plus got in my 1st 10 minutes on the treadmill. Eating breakfast now and getting ready to set up on twitter and get over to Dee’s diary. The rest of my housecleaning (except vacuuming, of course) and treadmilling will be accompanied by music. So. Off to twitter. Bright the Day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}
Good morning, 39 and mostly cloudy outside my window today. I see a bit of blue sky but the air is very chilly and yesterday we had both rain and hail storms. So I’ve reluctantly decided to be indoors for Easter lunch. It’s just for family but with 10 people it’s more fun for me to have as much done ahead as I can. I’ll have the patios ready drinks and visiting if the weather allows, and the dining room will be set for lunch.
We have a little bit more to do with the gravel around the patio pavers and then it will be a more level walking surface as well as less muddy. RonK needed a rest and we ran out of gravel so yesterday was a recovery day for him and a relatively restful day for me. But we’re rested and resupplied so today we should finish. Best wishes to all.
Good afternoon, Moose Peeps! It’s nearly 5 p.m. but it’s only now that I feel able to check in. We have white wisps of cloud blowing across a soft blue sky. It’s very windy.
Dearly’s health is declining so I’m having to take on more of his chores. For the past three days I’ve had to take Monty out for his morning walk. I’d enjoy this considerably more if there weren’t a freezing wind blowing in my face nonstop. This morning I wore my puffer jacket and a knitted hat that came down over my ears, but I should have worn a knitted scarf as well. Oh, well, tomorrow I’ll know. Our morning low was 33 F. and our current temp. is 55 F.
Started feeling rather ill yesterday, not sure why. I used to get quite vicious colds every four to six weeks but since I started the 500 mg of Vitamin C every morning I don’t have those. But the body aches, the head aches, and I even had an attack of nausea earlier. We’ll see. I can still smell and taste, so I do not think it’s Covid.
Yesterday at 8 p.m. the “Ten Commandments” came on. OMG! We got sucked into watching it. Every year I swear I am not going to do that, but every year I do. The movie I’d really like to see come on again is “Ben Hur,” not because I like that godawful Charlton Heston, but because of the sets and costumes.
“They” are predicting rain tonight. Rubbish, say I. Look at that blue sky! It will not happen.
Hope everyone at the Pond is having a good day.
Monday Meese. 32 here in Kingston going up to 61 and no rain.
My three sister-in-law decided they are driving here to pay us a visit today (they are all vaxxed) so I’m trying to get things in order this morning, hampered by the two pooping puppies. Sigh.
Puerto Rico
Well, when legislators are too lazy and stupid to pass legislation that will improve people’s lives, they can always pick on the wimmens to show their contempt for us.
Good Monday moaning, Moosekind! It looks like a nice, if rather chilly, day outside except that Mr. Skunk has clearly paid a visit to this part of the campus. I can smell the odor of his passage from the screened porch and from the other side of the building, in the courtyard. Meanwhile we have weak sunlight and very pale blue skies. The current temp. is 35 F., and the high today in Ashburn will be 69 F., or so it is alleged.
Have a busy morning of paperwork ahead: fill out the wretched forms for the next booster, fill out some weird Medicare forms (why does this happen every year?), read through the Writers’ Group offerings and make preliminary comments, and transfer ownership of the English as a Second Language article from self to another writer on the paper. And then I’ll have to take Monty out for his walkies.
Forgot to mention that the obituary of Gerda Weismann Klein was in the WaPo yesterday. I read her account of the Holocaust in All But My Life many, many years ago. What struck me was that after the Germans had left and the Americans came, she was the first to encounter one. She began to feel like a human being again when he held the door open for her. “May I see the other ladies?” he asked. (The other women were in an adjoining room.) “Ladies?” she asked, in a very small voice. “We are Jews.” There was a catch in his voice as he asnwered, “So am I.”
Anyway, they married some time later after she recovered her health. I liked her book because she recounted a couple of instances of kindness from the Germans: the one who saved her life during a surprise visit to the weaving factory where the girls worked, and the one who gave her a sandwich at lunchtime. The German girl, who didn’t turn around, simply reached behind her back and pushed the sandwich toward Gerda. Of course it was death to show any kindness toward anyone Jewish. Gerda’s story is available on video at the Holocaust Museum.
Lots to do so I’d better get on with it. Wishing a good, uneventful day to all at the Pond.
I hope Dearly is feeling better.
Thank you for asking, Jan. Actually, he’s not feeling much better. The arthritis is terrible. He’s seeing his doctor tomorrow, so perhaps he’ll be told of a way to improve the condition.
Monday morning. Ugh. This is why I made my happy music playlist, and put tea concentrate in my tea. Probably won’t be enough. We had rain overnight but it was fast-moving, so we’ll still have gigantic pollen counts. Anyway, working in the office today, must remember to stretch my shoulders.
Good morning, meeses! Monday …
It is 63 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 82. Sunny skies are in the forecast. There is a red flag warning in effect until 7pm MST which means the conditions are ripe for a wildfire. Around the mountains, little blazes can pop up that need to be put out but if the wind isn’t too high, they don’t spread much or quickly.
I am in princesspat’s time (Mountain Standard time = Pacific Daylight Time) so I only have about a one hour window of time before my Midwestern clients begin work so I best get to it. They have been waiting for me to “light” so I could address a few delayed issues.
See all y’all later!
Welcome to West Coast time Jan!
It is taking a bit of getting used to! My body is still on CDT so I am a bit disoriented regarding the time. My doggie is a mess.
Welp, it’s 56 heading for 66 and drizzling. Dark enough the lights are on and the PV system isn’t. Cloudy/rainy is the forecast for the week. There went our chances of getting to 480 for the month. Yesterday we generated at bit over 16 KWHs and the m-t-d at 155 was gaining – but the minor gains of the last 2 days will be lost today and then some. sigh. But the month is still young (sort of) – we’ve 20 more days to generate in. We shall see what we shall see.
I’m still a bit stiff from doing the vacuuming yesterday but I got it done. Managed 6 hours of sleep in chunks – the last hour was more dozing than real sleep. I was awake enough to hear the rain and rumbly thunder even though I wasn’t fully away. But it was pleasant and I’m happy with it. My hands are cold and stiff but I think they’ll be OK by late afternoon. That’s been the pattern lately. I haven’t checked in with anybody yet today. As of yesterday everybody was pretty much fatigued, some with (their unfortunately usual) pain, some with (their unfortunately becoming usual) depression – but everybody is just tired. Holding the Good Thoughts. . .
Off to twitter to start my day there. Bright the Day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}
Good morning, 39 and cloudy outside my window today. I was outside yesterday afternoon but the cold breeze was uncomfortable so I didn’t last long. And RonK cooked a chicken on the barbeque last night, but between the cold air and the hail it was hard to keep the temp controlled. I had gardening plans for today but I may just stay indoors and warm instead. Best wishes to all.
Tuesday Meese. 50 going up to 72 here in Kingston – but rain all day. :(
Puerto Rico
Good morning. We might have thunderstorms tonight, but it won’t be enough rain to bust the drought. Working from home today.
It’s 69 heading for 80 overcast and very humid. I was going to do my laundry today and hang it out but I’m not sure it’ll dry. I need to make up my mind soon or it will be too late to get it on the line anyway. sigh. We got enough light yesterday to generate right at 5 KWHs. The m-t-d at 160 is 16 short for “on track” – and unless the sun unexpectedly comes out (& stays out) we’ll going to lose more ground today. more sighs.
About the only outward differences between Aji’s and Amelia’s health situations are that Aji’s in a lot more pain and Amelia’s got a lot more fatigue – both of them are dealing with chronic and severe pain and fatigue. And financial problems, but that’s a given with health problems. Jill’s situation hasn’t changed, just the latest episodes. My friend is afraid they’re going to lose the other staff person in the department. Said staff person is from Spain and wants to go home over the summer to visit her 80-year-old mom but staff don’t get that kind of leave time. Even unpaid. If she goes as planned – gone 10 weeks – she’ll be fired. So she’d be better off resigning. My friend, the Department Chair, and one of the Provost’s assistants (representing the Arts & Sciences Dean’s office) are working on it but getting a whole lot of pushback from the (Deplorable) Chancellor’s office. At least my friend’s personal life has settled down some. For the time being.
Off to twitter. See what I decide about laundry while I get set up over there. Bright the Day, Meeses.{{{HUGS}}}
Good morning, 40 and cloudy outside my window today. The gravel project became more involved that we had planned, but we should finish today. We need to dig up a few pavers on the lower patio because they settled over the cold wet winter but that will wait until our sons can help us. We’ve still got the big crowbar, but it’s best they use it now!
I’m making slow progress cleaning and clearing files on and around my desk, and I have a sewing room project underway. My attention is scattered but as I wander around I’m actually doing a few things:) Best wishes to all.
Good Evening, Meeses! It is 69 degrees here, never got real hot.
I had no Internet this morning during my normal check-in time and then got busy. I have a spot for my laptop and should be able to check-in in the morning.
See all y’all tommorrow!
Wednesday Meese. 42 going up to 76 here in NY and no rain today! Yay!
Puerto Rico
We got no rain at all in Austin yesterday. There were tornadoes north of here — the same area that hit a couple of weeks ago. They also had hail — saw one picture with a hailstone the size of a man’s hand. Today should be nice and dull. Just work.
{{{anotherdemocrat}}} dull is good.
