Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: August 7th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

Morning low of 81 degrees in the Desert Southwest with an expected daytime high of 91. Partly cloudy skies with a chance of monsoonal rain in the afternoon.

Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Sunday Meese. 73 here in Kingston NY going up into the 90’s again.

Had a wonderful time at our annual women’s gathering yesterday.
Up and prepping for the birthday celebration of my husband’s initiation. I hope the predicted thunderstorms hold off.

Yes, the LUMA contract can be cancelled.

The more the governor talks, the more inept he behaves. Every contract has termination or cancellation clauses. Pierluisi to Luis Raúl Torres on LUMA’s contract: “They don’t even know what they’re talking about”

The wave of incidents of gender violence in Puerto Rico continues to be alarming, despite the declaration of a State of Emergency by the Government.

  3. Good morning. Eating breakfast and watching the news. Ali Velshi is in Alabama, talking about the horrible abortion situation there. Very depressing. My church is having “ally training” from an LGBTQ group this morning, should be good

  4. It’s 78 with a heat index close to 90, no I didn’t get to open up this morning. The A/C cycled on while I was in the middle of vacuuming around 7:30. sigh. Yesterday we generated 15.75 KWHs – not enough to cover the A/C but at least enough to bring the m-t-d to 93 & keep us on track for 450.

Today is Amelia’s move to Folsom. Hold the Good Thoughts for all involved.

    I’ve done all my Sunday chores and while I’ve got tremors, I’ve managed not to drop anything and am starting to cool down and not feel so icky/sticky. So. Off to twitter & DK for my online “chores”. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  5. Good Sunday morning, Moose Peeps! It’s a lovely day here in Ashburn so far, 80 F. with clear blue skies, a little restless breeze, and sunshine. The porch is in shade at present, so I may pop out there to do some work in a little while. The writers in my group are starting to send in their essays.

Tomorrow I have to interview a new employee in the HR department. Because the servers and other employees here at The Home are not allowed to accept tips during the year, residents are asked to contribute to a “staff appreciation fund” so that bonuses can be issued in December. There’s always a party with a giant check on display. I also need to write up the interview I had last Thursday. I’m still in email hell, having to notify all sorts of relatives and friends about my change of email address.

So, a day of work, an evening with a rather nice dinner, and perhaps we can watch some more of that amusing Korean series about the adventures of an autistic attorney in Seoul.

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  6. Monday Meese. Another sweltering day ahead here in Kingston. Will feel like it is over 100 and NWS heat advisory is in effect.

    Puerto Rico

This is unheard of Not a single tropical depression has passed here and they inform me that the University Hospital for Adults has had several blackouts today… What more evidence do you need to accept that our Health System collapsed? What are you waiting for? That Puerto Ricans die?

Crisis, what crisis? The University Hospital, which only admits very delicate patients, is without electricity after a failure in the generators. The Secretary of Health says that no patient is at risk, which is really very difficult to believe

  7. We broke our 20-something in a row 100+ streak over the weekend, started another. We are definitely going to have over 90 days of 100+ this year. Ally training at church yesterday was pretty basic, but is is best to start at the beginning. In the office today, but I brought cookies (they were a buy this thing, get cookies so why not). Most exciting thing — we might get rain this week!

  8. It’s 79 and overcast. sigh. I do see some blue sky so hopefully it’ll clear off by the time the sun clears the oak tree. We only generated 14.25 KWHs yesterday but the 107 m-t-d is still on track for 450. Not covering A/C use but covering everything else. This, as in everything else, we shall see what we shall see.

Amelia DM’d me about midnight PDT that they were “exhausted but here safely” – thank All That’s Holy. Next step, recovering a bit. Then the doctor. There are many rivers yet to cross but the largest and potentially most dangerous is crossed. Blessings on all concerned.

My sleep was rocky but at least I got some. Couldn’t open the house today either but according to the widget I should be able to tomorrow morning. Got the yard done yesterday – it had recovered a lot better and faster than I expected it to after the rain we got 10 days back. I’m going to continue being really tight for money for a while. (I’m OK, it’s just my ability to give that’s being curtained.) But I can’t do my own yard work any longer and these guys are really good. Dependable and fast. What took me 3 hours to do by myself (& Ed 3 days if he finished at all) takes these 2 men 20 minutes – and only charge $45.

    Off to twitter. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  9. Good Monday morning, Moosekind. It’s 86 F. in Ashburn, on its way up to 93 F., and sunny. We may or may not have thunderstorms this afternoon. Dearly has gone off to the wound care specialist at Kaiser, more than 1 hour from where we live. That’s pretty much going to keep me from going back to Kaiser for an HMO—they make you drive all over creation to see specialists.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, I have to leave here in a little while to interview someone in the main clubhouse. I’ll walk inside the buildings, where it’s cool.

My father would have been 100 years old today if he had lived. My mother-in-law would have been 120, as she was born in 1902!

Today Younger Son and family will board a flight to London. They plan to stay for 10 days in England. Trevor and Nora have been there several times before, but it will be the first time for DIL and Karl. I’m not sure whether Nora’s BFF, who will accompany them, has been there before.

That’s all I’ve got today, Moosekind, except that I love our President and Vice-President, and am beginning to heat Yahoo.

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  10. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

It is 81 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 90. Mainly sunny with a chance of rain after noon. Last night we had a very noisy storm about 1am that woke me up from a deep sleep. I had heard about the close-in thunder being VERY LOUD but that was my first experience with it. It sounded like a rifle blast! I think it must be the reverberation off the mountains; in any event, it woke me up, I had a difficult time getting back to sleep and it has thrown my whole day off.

Yay Democrats in Array! I hope Nancy hurries up and gets her people into town to pass the Inflation Reduction Act – some of these feels a lot like spiking the ball at the 5 yard line. It should pass the House but wherever there are ratfking berners, there is the chance for ratfking. I want it on Biden’s desk, NOW!

I need to get back to work – I had a mini-crisis this morning that I needed to address and I then I had to go through 5 boxes labelled Office Supplies to find recordable DVDs for a project I am working on. Now I need to finish that project and then think about a nap.

    See all y’all later!

  11. Good morning, 71 and sunny outside my window today. Ava is here to help RonK paint the back porch floor and I’m doing my best to stay out of the way. It’s nice when he decides to take the lead on a project and even nicer Ava wants to help. Best wishes to all.

  12. Good morning. Happy about the raid on tfg’s place. Way past time, but better late than never. There was love footage of his people carting off documents, should have been stopped back then. Anyway, today I get to wfh. So much quieter. Okay, I have the tv on, but it’s noise of my choosing, not loud dramatic sighs, shout-yawns, and constant alarmingly loud throat clearing.

  13. Tuesday Meese. 75 going up to 90 with thunderstorms – very humid here! Stayed up late watching all the responses to the FBI raid. The memes had me laughing.

    Puerto Rico

  14. It’s 73 and I’ve had the house open since around 4:30 this morning (yes, I went back to bed – and even got a little sleep – after I opened up) and won’t have to close up again for another hour. Drizzling and overcast but hopefully will clear off for some good afternoon generation. We got 16.9 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d at 124.6 is still on track for 450.

Most of the move things are finished for Amelia – but she can’t get to the doctor, not even via telemed, until October 20th! sigh. I hope there’s a cancellation so she can be seen sooner. She needs home health which she hasn’t had since she was evicted 3 years ago as well as her meds that she hasn’t had for 2 (when COVID got going her doctor wouldn’t see anyone w/o a negative COVID test and she was never able to get one – then her doctor retired). But still, she’s safe now and sounds so much better mentally/emotionally. So that part’s very good.

Other folks, other problems – none of which couldn’t be ameliorated if not flat out resolved with an additional $10K in income per year. Or a social system that covered essentials like food, healthcare, childcare, eldercare.

    I got started on my twitter stuff with boosting Dee’s tweets and forgot to come back and check in until now. ???? Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  15. Good morning, 62 and partly cloudy outside my window today. RonK and Ava were a good team yesterday, and I enjoyed sitting back and watching them work together. The back porch floor should be dry today so I’ll wash the interior windows and start putting shelves and baskets back in place. The back porch is the main entrance for daily use so I like to keep it looking as tidy as possible. It has a built in shelf for plants, another shelf unit for recycling and gardening supplies, baskets for recycling, shoes, and produce, as well as hooks for shopping bags, umbrellas, and wet hats and coats, etc. A wood cooler that also works as a bench in there too so it’s a well used space.

I also need to spend time at my desk today so I’d best get busy. Best wishes to all.

  16. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

It is 77 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 88. Sunny skies with rain expected this afternoon. Last night we had another round of storms – it started at 11pm and the rain lasted for about 4 hours. Flood warnings went up around 2am and the wash behind our building was running all night. We love the rain here, even when it wakes us up!

This may not be popular but I will settle for tRump being indicted for violating the Presidential Records Act and being permanently barred from public office. The law was passed when Congress realized that Richard Nixon could evade prosecution for his crimes in office by just destroying and/or stealing the evidence. I think an insurrection indictment will be difficult to prove and the fake electors scheme would be too difficult to pin on him. But he must not be allowed to run for president, period. I do however want everyone around him, including family members, to be indicted and imprisoned and I want TFG himself to be sued into poverty. He can’t be made into a martyr or this cycle of ugly will never end.

I was busy all morning and now I need to get off my computer.

    See all y’all later!

  17. FYI – Diana just emailed me. After she replied to Dee above, she hasn’t been able to get in. She kept trying but keeps getting the 404 not secure message.

  18. Wednesday Meese. 67 here going up to 85 here in Kingston- which is much cooler thankfully.
Puerto Rico however is faced with very high heat.

  19. Good morning. Very exciting that there’s a 40% chance of raintoday, and 50% tomorrow! Not stopping the triple digits, 104 expected today. Anyway, one more peaceful wfh day. News is full of 1st day of school stories. Except for monkeypox – the city & county declared an emergency, 68 cases. Good for them getting ahead of things

    • An interested person would like to know why in the die-diddley hail schools find it necessary to start school before Labor Day. It can’t be snow days, it doesn’t snow in Texas. It used to snow in Virginia, but global warming stopped that. So why?

      • School has always started in August in Texas. I don’t know why, but I do remember one of the times we had moved back to the States, school had already started. Lucky my schools in Dubai were good and I was ahead of what schools here did in 7th grade.

      • They started school here on August 4th and I think it is because they want to be done by mid-May so that there is some usable part of summer – June is our hottest month. In Wisconsin, they would start after Labor Day because they wanted kids to keep working in the north woods resorts through the holiday. Of course, kids don’t work in the resorts any longer (they use cheap Eastern European labor) but tell that to the old timers in the legislature! Kids there go to school until mid-June which is ridiculous.
