Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: September 25th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

    Morning low of 73 degrees in the Desert Southwest with an expected daytime high of 95. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast.

    Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Sunday Meese. 49 and rain all day here in Kingston NY going up to 67.

    Things in Puerto Rico are still grim – see latest power outage map:

    Just saw this
    My great-grandmother just died. She was all this week in the Pavia de Yauco hospital. The hospital had no electricity and they couldn’t operate on her. Damn, this thing about light is serious, it’s not a luxury

    • Oh, Dee, I’m so sorry! I know President Biden declared it a federal disaster. I hope help can get to PR. A team of people from my area just arrived back from PR. I think they were electricians.

  3. Good morning. Yesterday’s candidate forum was small but nice. Now, I’m watching the news and eating breakfast while my tea steeps. Later: church and cooking.

  4. It’s 69 heading for 84 and sunny. Yesterday it clouded up and we got a little bit of rain – a very little bit and from my roof south. The street was wet and rain dripped off my roof onto the top back step – but the bottom step was dry as a bone, not even a drop. We only generated 5.78 KWHs and the m-t-d at 239 is not on track for 300. But it’s close enough we might catch up today.

    I’ve just finished all my Sunday chores, my 1st 10-minute session on the treadmill, and am sitting down to breakfast and the internet. I’ll need to close up the house soon though. As of last night everybody’s hanging on. Healing Energy to everyone.

    Off to twitter & Dee’s diary. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  5. Good Sunday morning, Moose Peeps! It’s 62 F. in Ashburn right now, allegedly going up to 80 F. later but I don’t believe it. We’re supposedly going to have fierce winds and rains between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. (that’s a nice long stretch), but it hasn’t started yet. Outside the sky is gray and leaves are drifting off in slow-mo.

    Dearly was talking to our neighbor, Raspberry Poodle’s mother, yesterday out in the courtyard. She thinks we should talk to the Banfield (Monty’s health care provider) management for giving us back a completely different dog. Monty’s been off the meds. since Friday afternoon. He does eat, he does go out, but he spends most of his time asleep. I am very afraid his passing is imminent. (I’ve had a feeling there will be major changes in my life in the next 6 months.)

    Yesterday evening I looked after the three sisters. They used to all want to do the same thing at the same time. For example, we’d play the Dictionary game together. Now, the nearly-teen, A., wanders off by herself. She reads a book through dinner. S., the middle girl who is rather sweet, said she hadn’t done her laundry and wandered off to do that. That left me with the newly minted nine-year-old, Nora, whose birthday was September 5th. Now, I’d brought three tiny boxes of parlor games with me: Do You Remember, Name That Word, and Which Would You Choose? as presents for the girls, thinking we could play them.

    A. said she would save “Do You Remember” for the Writers’ Group her class was going to start after school. S. did participate for a while with “Which Would You Choose?” Nora and I played “Name That Word” for a time. She said she thought President Biden was doing a wonderful job. “Agree,” I said, nodding. Then she said, referring to the “Do You Remember” game, “There are parts of my life I’d like to completely forget, and parts that I wish I could live over, like third grade.”

    This simply rocked me back on my heels. Nine years old! Anyway, they’re a fascinating collection of sisters. There are books all over the house, their “office” contains a desk for each girl, with a collection of cellos, guitars, and ukeleles sitting in one corner, and they have a screened porch with a huge telescope for viewing the heavens.

    A woman who runs the UU group here has just emailed to ask for ideas for a solstice ritual in December. I’m so delighted! I have a favorite ritual I’ve used for years, so we might do that one.

    That’s enough from me. Dearly is now dressed, so he can help me get the slow cooker down, and we’re off to the races! Wishing all at the Pond a good day.

  6. Good day, 67 and sunny outside my window today. I’ve been enjoying family phone chats, but now I need to finish changing our beds and to get the laundry going. My quiet mornings are good for my arthritic knees but I don’t have much of a day left for the rest of life’s activities. Oh well, what gets done will just have to be good enough. Best wishes to all.

  7. Good morning. I think the cold front was hitting as I was walking, I could feel occasional gusts of cool. Still 78, and I got in almost a mile. More exercise this afternoon, as we’re pulling files that have been inactive for 2 years – it is a lot of work, hard on the back even if you’re conscious about ergonomics.

  8. Monday Meese. 56 here and we are getting rain Am worrying about my goddaughter in GA who is in the path of Ian in GA next to FL on the coast.

  9. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

    It is 72 perfect degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 93. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast.

    Italy is apparently ready to install a literal fascist as Prime Minister with one third of the electorate sitting home. I hope that in America we can get people excited about voting when the choices are quite starkly democracy or fascism. European white nationalism is probably more understandable but it makes no sense in a country like ours built by immigration with multiple ethnicities and races woven into the fabric of our nation since its inception. Not to say that the ethnicities and races always (ever?) mixed well but it is undeniably who and what we are.

    I had a relatively productive weekend and will spend this morning putting together my project list for the rest of September and the 3rd quarter. It is shocking to me that it is nearly October, I guess understandable as parts of the past year were a blur for me. I feel like I am finally In Place, a process that began last July with the emptying and became real last October with the first move – staging us and our things for the eventual relocation. Yesterday I sat outside on my deck and thought “this is good.”

    See all y’all later!

  10. It was 46 when I got up, 53 now, heading for 78. In a reversal of what had become usual, I closed up before bedtime and will open the house in a couple of hours. I still have one more minute of day than night today which comes as close as I’m going to get I imagine. (As in I expect tomorrow won’t show equal but more night than day by a minute or two.) I’ll bake an apple crumble tonight. Meanwhile we generated 10.3 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d at 249 is still not quite back on track for 300. The week’s predicted to be sunny so I think we’ll make it. But it’s going to be close.

    Charlie’s starting to do what Murf did – stand up to eat and not eat much. I have gotten him to eat more by holding the dish for him, as I did with Murf. He’s not crazy about it but he is hungry and will eat some before he walks away from me and takes a bite or two from another dish. And like Murf, he ignores a raised bowl entirely. Cats. sigh. But at least I know what’s going on now and don’t need to make an emergency trip to the store for baby food to tempt him to eat.

    Best I know, everybody’s still hanging on. Some even seem to be getting a better grip on the rope. Healing Energy to everyone, whatever the need, whatever the species.

    Off to twitter. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

    • Good Monday morning, Moosekind! It’s 72 F. and sunny here in Ashbuggy, won’t get much hotter.

      Dearly has made an appointment with yet a third vet for Monty. We’re taking him in at 9:30 tomorrow. My SIL in Austin said that his ex-wife’s dad had a dog that went in for routine surgery, came out a different dog. The poor animal suffered brain damage after too much anesthetic or a bad reaction to the anesthetic. I’m beginning to think that’s what happened to Monty. He’s now been off the meds since Friday afternoon and is still in the same zombie mode. He in no way resembles the lively little dog that I used to think had forgotten he was no longer a puppy. Monty barely moves outside to do the necessary and has to be reminded to eat and drink. In between he sleeps.

      I might not be around much, depending on what happens with our poor little dog.

      Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

      • A friend of my who worked for a vet said that there is an anesthesia that makes your dog a zombie and takes a very long time to clear out. It does eventually clear out, or at least for my dog when she was younger, it did. That said, when she went under again in 2021, she came out changed, lost her hearing and got a bit dotty. Was it due to the anesthesia or her old age combined with the stress of the surgery itself? I am not sure – it was a different anesthesia than the zombie one. She has not really "come back" from that one. I hope you get to the bottom of it.

  11. Good morning, 54 and partly cloudy outside my window today. I’ve been living such a quiet life it seems I have little to share lately. Keeping my legs elevated most of the day has given me needed pain relief but it’s becoming very boring. I read, follow the chateau renovation projects on YT that interest me, play solitaire, listen to music, etc. I’m restless but relatively comfortable and entertained so I’m grateful for that. It’s just a very quiet life for me right now. As always, my best wishes to all.

    • A quiet, boring, life is good & we are totally happy to hear that you are comfortable and entertained. Healing Energy & {{{HUGS}}}

  12. Tuesday Meese. 48 here in Kingston NY going up to 70 and sunny. Watching Hurricane Ian closely, and hoping my goddaughter in Waycross GA (which is near the border with Florida) will be okay. She was flying up here to NY for a ceremony this weekend but her flight out of Jacksonville FL has been cancelled.

    Puerto Rico

  13. Good morning. It is lovely & cool here — I wore long pants for my morning walk, it was 60 degrees, brrr. Got in a mile, my neighborhood is flatter than downtown so it’s easier. Loved watching the DART impact yesterday, and now I’m watching astronomy while I wfh.

  14. It was 47 the 1st time I woke up, 51 the 2nd time, and 56 now. Heading for 84 and supposed to be sunny. Which it isn’t. I’m going to trust the forecast anyway and just put the laundry on. We generated 10.4 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d at 259.85 isn’t quite on track for 300 but almost. I need to contact the Ozark Solar guy again. Just how much time are we supposed to give SolarEdge? It’s been a week as of today.

    Sometime between yesterday morning and this morning my actual equinox happened – day will be 1 minute shorter than night today. I “celebrated” last night with an apple cobbler. Nice thing about recipes that don’t require eggs. It’s very easy to cut the recipe down to single servings. Which I did.

    I’m a bit groggy and definitely running behind so I guess I’d best get started. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  15. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

    It is 73 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 91. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast – no rain expected. My local news is now saying that the monsoon season does not officially end until September 30th – I wonder where I got September 15th from?

    I spent all morning on client projects and I need to get my non-client day started now. I have a few articles up in tabs and will either read them later or put them in Pocket. I was sad to see that the Freedom CaCa is not going to go after McCarthy (calling him a RINO) as they focus on taking back the House. :( Goddess help us and our democracy if they end up controlling even one house of Congress.

    See all y’all later!

  16. Good morning, 53 and partly cloudy. I see more leaves on the old maple trees have turned color overnight, so it’s good our furnace will be repaired this afternoon. Our son is repairing and adding new weather stripping to the exterior door in my sewing room so we should be warmer this winter. The door was always drafty but fixing it kept falling off the list so I’m glad it’s finally getting repaired. It’s a french door and I love the light that comes in through the glass panes, but I’m going to make an interlined curtain so I can close it off when the cold wind blows. Feels good to be more ready for winter this year. Best wishes to all.

  17. Good Tuesday evening, Meese. At this writing it’s dark and 60 F. It’s been a very wearing, emotional day.

    This morning we drove to our THIRD vet, the one in our old neighborhood (to which, incidentally, we moved exactly 46 years ago today), and after Monty was taken inside to be evaluated, the vet came out and told us her findings. The entire consultation took place in the open air. The establishment was so paranoid about Covid we never set foot inside the building. She began by saying, “I am very worried about Monty.

    Dr. Monahan is the first and only vet who has given us a clue as to the nature of his problem. She thinks he had a stroke or suffered some other neurological damage when he was anesthetized for the teeth cleaning operation. Although she said he’s fine, physically, mentally he’s just “not all there.” She took him off all meds. except one and added Prednisone. We are to give it to him in diminishing doses and bring him back in a week. I must say, he’s only had two doses today but he already is acting more like his old self! He followed me to my office and went to sleep in his dog bed. This is the first time he’s done that in DAYS!

    So tonight I’m feeling a little happier about The Boy. Disappointed that the Jan. 6 hearing won’t be held tomorrow.

    Hope everyone at the Pond has had a good day. Let no one say their lives are so quiet they have nothing to share. I can’t tell you how much I love hearing about everyone’s life and the seasonal changes and chores that happen every week and month. Reading about it all makes me feel we’re part of a family—a far-flung family, admittedly, but we all appeciate each other. May it continue to be so.

    • I am glad to hear that there is a diagnosis for Monty and maybe some hope to get him back to himself. How old is he? I wonder about Prednisone for my dog who was never quite herself after her 2021 dental. I just chalked it up to her hearing loss (which can deaden a lot of cognitive awareness). There is definitely hearing loss but maybe there is something that can be done about the moments when she seems disconnected. I dislike the Prednisone commercial – "Healthier Brain, Better Life" (which seems a little too sweeping of statement) but maybe there is something to it. Keep us posted!

      EDIT: Hahahaha! That is not the Prednasone commercial that is the Prevagen commercial. I should take time to google.

    • It’s good there’s finally a Dx – and a vet who cares enough to make one. Decent vets, like decent doctors of any kind, are treasures. And just as hard to find. Healing Energy to Monty – and the entire family. {{{Diana}}}

  18. Good morning. I slept in, I’ll walk tomorrow & Friday. Watching astronomy, local news is all Florida — crews from here are already on the road to help with repair. Feel almost guilty to have our gorgeous, cool & sunny weather.

  19. Good morning, meeses! Wednesday …

    It is 72 somewhat moist degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 90. Chance of rain is 100% at 3pm which sounds pretty confident (and explains why the air is somewhat moist). Monsoon going out with a bang?

    I wonder if DeSantis’ focus on performative cruelty to beef up his 2024 credentials instead of focusing on the problems with the Florida insurance market might come back and bite him in the ass. Apparently his Florida base loves the cruelty and he is leading Crist by a lot. If indeed all politics is local, they may be less pleased with him when their homes are washed away and they find out that their insurance doesn’t cover them.

    I have an appointment later this morning so I have a short window to try to Get Things Done. I best get to it.

    See all y’all later!
