Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.
Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).
The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.
So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?
…
NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

Have a great day, all y’alls!!
Good Sunday morning Meese.

POTUS Biden to visit PR on Monday
Don’t be surprised that his visit – welcomed by many, is also rejected by many as well. Biden will, by virtue of politics have to be seen with Gov. “Pipo” Pierluisi. Puerto Rican activists reject both Republicans and Democrats – since both mainland parties and their Presidents supported/support the unelected Fiscal Control Board which imposed LUMA on the island.
This is what the town of Boquerón looks like 15 days from Fiona. The businesses that have managed to open do so with generators because the electrical service has not been restored
It appears that the whole governance of PR was screwed up from the very beginning. I hope if we get a Democratic Congress that PR will be given the kind of assistance it needs.
Good morning. Another cool one, yay. I did so much yesterday: made enough lunch for basically the whole month, vegetables to add to dinner for maybe longer than that, and laundry & dishes. I thought about setting the alarm to walk this morning, but decided that I’d only walk if I woke up without it. I needed the sleep. Now I’m watching the news while my tea steeps. Ali Velshi had the most amazing book on his Banned Book Club: Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe. It’s a coming of age story but it still sounds wonderful, and beautifully written to this middle-aged lady.
Good Sunday morning, Moosekind! We woke up to noisily falling rain that is still falling. It’ll rain off and on all day today and tomorrow. Good. By Tuesday we just might catch up to where we need to be for the year.
It’s also chilly. Right now in Ashburn it’s 55 F. I predict a lunch of onion soup (oddly enough, the Trader Joe’s version is vegetarian), and TJ’s custard tarts with blackberries to warm us up. Dinner tonight will be meatloaf made by yrs truly. We must cook and cook and cook, for on October 11 they’re turning off the electricity for an entire day, Goddess knows why. No TV, no Internet, no nothin’. To keep us from getting into a snit, they’re providing free breakfast, lunch, and dinner (all boxed and cold) in certain restaurants. We’ll have to fill our thermos with boiling water the night before. I can live without coffee if I have to, but not Early Morning Tea.
Well, enough of that. Our little boy is blind. The occipital ridge over his right eye is bulging and the eye is looking off the wrong way. This morning he woke up late, and when I led him out to the courtyard for some business, his nose kept knocking into the wall of the passageway. He keeps going the wrong way when we take him anywhere. We can’t pick him up and carry him because his stomach has always been very tender and he doesn’t like it being touched.
Sigh. Well, if I allow myself to think about him for more than a minute, I start crying. When I think of how he used to bounce off the walls! We went out to dinner with a friend last night in the restaurant next door. When we returned, he did get up from the floor and wag his tail, but in the old days we would have been greeted by a chorus of swear-barks.
Well, I must begin on the day’s chores. Hope everyone at the Pond has a good day.

Thank you, bfitz!
I am interested in hearing what your vet says caused the sudden blindness. It sounds like cascading bodily insults that all began with the dental procedure. You should find out what kind of anesthesia they used – and share it with us to avoid! I also wonder if they had him in an odd position during the procedure that was putting pressure on nerves or his back. Obviously when a dog is under, they can’t react to painfully uncomfortable contortions that their bodies are placed in – the bodies just have to bear it.
When my sweet little 19 year old dog had a stroke that rendered her blind (in addition to all the other things that were ailing her), I finally made the Quality of Life decision. I know that blindness is not a life threatening condition but I could not imagine her enjoying not being able to see as well as having to be carried everywhere. :(
I’ve got to figure out what’s in Nyquil that lets me get a good night’s sleep. I can’t keep taking the stuff, it upsets my tummy if for no other reason, but the last 2 nights I’ve gotten almost 8 hours straight. Which hasn’t happened in months if not years. Anyway, it was 46 at dawn, 57 now, and heading for 83. It’s sunny which is good. Between the shorter days, angle of the sun, and at least one barely functioning panel we only got 9.6 KWHs yesterday but we’re on track for 260.
I’ve got all my Sunday housecleaning chores done and even managed (I hope) to replace the vacuum cleaner bag. I don’t have to do that very often, not even once a month. You can get an awful lot of dust bunnies and cat fluff into a vacuum cleaner bag. Anyway, time to get to my Twitter chores. And Dee’s diary, of course. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}
Bfitz, please check to see whether or not NyQuil contains a drug called Diphenhydramine HCI 25 mg. My doctor told me that drug is implicated in Alzheimer’s. Before she told me that, I used to love taking Tylenol PM occasionally and getting a full 8.
She prescribed Lorazepam instead. Its brand name is Ativan. Well, after I spaced 90 tablets over a full year (only took it when I was going mad from lack of sleep), she told me I could take every night and not get Alzheimer’s! So believe me, darling, I do take it every night and I love the sleep I get. Only occasionally does it fail to work. I think we all have one of those nights once in a while. Jan says it’s a disturbance in the force, which I can easily believe.
Anyway, perhaps you can talk to your doctor about it. Good luck!
No, it doesn’t have that listed – either as an active or inactive ingredient. I don’t take it often because it has Tylenol in it and I don’t need the liver damage. It also has 4 different dyes. And HFCS. And antifreeze. All of which combine to upset my tummy. But night before last I was waking up coughing and choking on mucus and since I had half a bottle left from when basket was here/had COVID, I took some. And slept. Took some again last night. And slept. But I won’t be taking any tonight. The tummy ache gets worse with continued use. {{{Diana}}}
Yikes! Anything that upsets your stomach should alarm you – your body knows. I hope you can find something that works and does not have other bad outcomes.
Something is causing the sinusitis to really flare right now. I don’t know what and it doesn’t seem to matter if I’ve got the house open (with outdoor air coming in) or not. Most antihistamines don’t work and the decongestants either work intermittently or can only be taken intermittently. I suppose it’s of scientific interest that (apparently) the antihistamine in Nyquil and the generic equivalent works. But is connected with Alzheimer’s. If it weren’t connected with Alzheimer’s I’d go find it by itself and see if it worked for more than 3 days in a row. But it is. sigh. I’m pretty sure the stomach upset is the dyes and HFCS since those brightly colored soft drinks that contain that combination also upset my tummy. I’ll keep looking. But I’ve been looking for 60 years. . .
OK, I’ve looked up the ingredients and the antihistamine in here is also a sleep aid similar to the one you mentioned. Says that occasional use is OK but regular use is implicated in Alzheimer’s. So one more reason for me not to take that regularly.
Good morning, 56 and light clouds. My plans to work in the garden yesterday changed to just being in the garden, puttering around and chatting on the phone. It was nice to just relax. I would like to make a few hydrangea bouquets today so I’ll see what happens. Best wishes to all.
Happy Monday. I woke up early, got downtown & was walking by 5:30. Did 1.2 mi. Trying to prepare for an in-office day. At least I get to leave at 4:45. That 15 minutes makes a difference in traffic.
Another, are you allowed to work at home two days a week?
Yep, I have Tuesday & Wednesday. So much better.
Monday Meese. 45 here in Kingston going up to only 60.
Spent part of the day yesterday doing ceremonial things. Today is a house cleaning day – ugh.

I hope your ceremonial things went well. {{{HUGS}}}
Good Monday morning, Moosekind. It’s 47 F. here in Ashburn with a partly cloudy sky. Monty continues to be in a troubled state. We know he’s blind.
Have a lunch date today, will continue to wrestle with the devil when I have time (seek an online tutorial for MS Word, which at the moment will not let me print).
Y’all play nicely at the Pond, y’hear?
So sorry about Monty. But he knows you are there & love him, so that’s good for him.
Thanks, Becky!
{{{Diana}}} – As long as Monty isn’t in pain, he’ll be OK. Blind isn’t a death sentence for him. He won’t run around like he used to of course, but he’ll navigate the apartment easily once he gets used to it. He’s got his people and feels safe going outside with you. This is probably one more side effect of the overdose of the wrong kind of anesthetic he got from the vet who apparently doesn’t know or care diddly about elderly dogs. But you’ve got him back with the good vet who does, so anything that can be done will be done. Healing Energy to your household & moar {{{HUGS}}}
I was reading top to bottom and responded to your Sunday comment. Good luck with Monty!
p.s. Printing issues are hell but once you get them resolved, they usually stick. Have you tried printing to a PDF and then printing the PDF as a workaround?
Thank you, Jan. I’ve given up trying to print the cover of my book as the first page of the short story. The file is too big for my humble little printer. Instead, I had Dearly print out the cover and make copies of it on his printer.
I need to take an online tutorial re MS Word. I only want a free one, though.
It’s 47 heading for 83 and sunny. We didn’t quite get as much electricity as on Saturday but we still got a bit over 9 KWHs. The m-t-d is 18.9 and on track for 260.
Not quite 5 hours of sleep last night in multiple chunks. I can understand the temptation to take the Nyquil to get sleep now and worry about Alzheimer’s later. I guess I’m lucky it upsets my stomach. And that I’m the TX-born daughter of a hard-headed Hoosier. Meanwhile I’ve got a headache and am a bit fuzzy. Amelia heard from Bobby, he’s got off-and-on power and has found food for the animals. He hasn’t been eating himself. His doctor is upset at how much and how fast weight he’s lost between visits. She sent him a bit. I just sent him a bit. Aashirs nani is sending him a bit. We’re hoping the bits will add up to enough at least until our own next paydays. As aashirs nani keeps saying, too many people in need, too few of us to meet those needs. Aji’s pushing a fundraiser for a “new” mobile home for a Lakota elder on the Pine Ridge Reservation – pushing hard because it’s got to be done before the ground freezes in SD. And there’s my own daily needs list. I don’t, I can’t, donate to all of them. I’m just under 150% poverty level myself. The only reason I can give at all is I don’t have a mortgage/rent or much of an electric bill. And the latter could change this year. sigh. So I put it out to the Universe and hope that channels the Good where it’s needed.
Healing Energy to everyone, of whatever species, for whatever reason. Off to twitter. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}
Good morning, meeses! Monday …
It is 66 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 86. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast. The humidity was a little more reasonable this morning so the coolness was allowed to enter the apartment to avoid the air conditioning for as long as possible.
I was working on a client’s problem this morning and have run out of time to read the news. I put a couple of stories in Pocket and will, I hope, have time to read them later. While I was cleaning out my blogging email account on Saturday, I noticed that something changed on our web hosting on July 8th. I am going to see if that ties back to when we started having the crazy blocks. That would at least explain why it started and maybe will give me an idea of how to fix it. I will not spend much time on it as I am still considering changing hosting to find something more WordPress friendly and maybe cheaper. I have to vet some new hosting for a client and will check out options for MM while I do that.
See all y’all later!
Thank you. We all appreciate your work on the site. It feels so friendly and safe here at the Pond.
Good morning, 57 and light clouds outside my window today. I watered the patio plants yesterday, made a large hydrangea bouquet, re did the fake arrangement on the porch using fall flowers from my stash, enjoyed the green chili stew RonK made for dinner, watched House of Dragon, and that was the day. I don’t have to do much in the garden this week so I’m going to see what happens in my sewing room. Best wishes to all on this quiet Monday morning.
Good morning. I slept in, will walk tomorrow. Watching astronomy TV, eating breakfast. Will start working soon. Yesterday was really tiring at work. But there was good news: Harry Styles (pop star) endorsed Beto during his last concert here (and Gov. Abbott’s adult daughter was in the crowd). And Hozier (blues rock, with the most amazing voice) announced new music for Friday; released a feminist statement about the song and that he’s donating to abortion funds from the sales. On balance a pretty good day.
Harry Styles’ thing is feather boas. Campy, fun, and it bothers the right people. Anyway:
Heh!
Tuesday Meese. 48 going up to 56 with rain here in Kingston NY.
Biden’s trip to Puerto Rico got very mixed reviews. I’m hoping his administration will be able to follow through on actually getting things done there.
Sis, I’m very much hoping that good things will come of President Biden’s visit and that this time PR and Vieques really will receive the help they need!
Good Tuesday morning, Meese! It’s 48 F. chilly, rainy degrees here in Ashburn. We woke up to steady rain, but it seems to have slacked off for the time being. Let’s hope it slacks off during our visit to the vet this morning as we are not allowed inside the building. Our high today will be 53 F. or something like that. No matter how much it rains, it seems that we never catch up to where the rainfall total is supposed to be for the year.
Yesterday was very tiring. I had one of those Nights from Hell—they seem to occur once a week—had to scurry around yesterday getting ready to leave here at 11:30 for lunch with my dear friend B. in neighboring Sterling, VA. We had a lovely chat, so I didn’t leave there until 3 p.m. Once I was back, I simply collapsed into bed after my bad night and felt so tired when I woke up that I just couldn’t walk out to the restaurant to pick up dinner. So Dearly had soup, sandwich, and sticky toffee pudding, and I had soup and a small apple. I should mention that the lunch my friend prepared was VERY filling!
I’m so sick of seeing that bloated orange face everywhere in the news that I don’t know what to do. I’ll probably skip the news today.
Also, Twitter just said the date for the next and last Jan. 6 hearing has been set for Oct. 13. If it’s at 1 p.m., as it usually is, groan! I lead the Writers’ Group from 1 to 3. Taping C-SPAN doesn’t always work (don’t ever get Comcast), and if I just watch in the evening on PBS there will be talking heads giving their tiresome opinions and speaking over the proceedings. First-world problem! Think about what the people in Florida and Ukraine are going through.
That’s enough whining from yrs “cross as two sticks” truly this morning! Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.
There is probably a way to watch it streaming if you have a good device to watch on. CSPAN.org has a library of their broadcasts.
Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …
It is 68 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 86. Mostly sunny skies are expected although we are in the middle of a thunderstorm right now. The wave of storms are coming from the west again which is very disconcerting! I wonder if this is from Hurricane Orlene which hit Mexico.
We are getting to the time of the election cycle where it is a bad idea to pay too much attention to the polls. To the extent that polls may tell you where to focus ads or canvassing, they may be useful. But usually the ones being reported are for click bait and to set people’s hair on fire. I think some of the "sense of the electorate" polls can be instructive – I stopped believing that Latinx voters were a monolithic voting bloc in 2016 and saw that they were trending red. Our district has a Republican son of Mexican immigrants who “snuck” across the border who is a rabid border hawk – his primary ads showed him strutting along the border with law enforcement as he looked mean and manly and outlined his plans to keep "those people who are clearly not him" out. Shameful. But that is what happens when your brain goes Republican – I got mine, screw you rules everything. I hope we don’t lose Nevada and that when push comes to shove workers realize that there is only one party that respects the value of their work.
I have a busy day and I best get to it.
See all y’all later!
It’s 54 heading for 82 and sunny at the moment. We generated a little less than the previous two days but still a bit over 9 KWHS and still – at 27 – on track for 260. Good news that SolarEdge finally responded and is shipping the optimizer. As soon as it gets to him, Josh the Ozark Solar guy will come over and replace the bad one. And check out the whole system while he’s here. Maybe when he’s actually here looking at the system – and the trees – he’ll understand what I mean when I say there are several panels that should be producing more than they are even if they aren’t producing so little as to wave red flags. Yet.
However much sleep I actually get, as the sun comes up later, I get up later. One of the blessings of being retired. As the days get chillier I am wishing I could drink tea more than just occasionally. As with so many things, if I drink it too often it upsets my stomach. Most of the herb teas do too. Coffee was the only thing I could drink daily, as long as I kept it to 2 mugs or less, and not upset my stomach. But I have enough headaches, I don’t need to add the caffeine headache back into the mix. I wonder if decaf would work and not get me re-addicted to caffeine? Anyway, talk about your 1st World problems, that’s got to be high on the list. Holding the Good Thoughts for folks with real needs – like making the rent/mortgage or getting enough food or keeping the power on.
Off to twitter. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}
gm, 56 and foggy outside my window, and a slow and sleepy morning inside. RonK is meeting fellow retirees from WWU for coffee this morning so the house is very quiet and I’m tempted to forget making tea and just drift into a nap. Best wishes to all.

I’m putting this in now because I usually sign in later than most. Diana asked me to tell the Meese that Monty crossed the Rainbow Bridge this afternoon. The vet was shocked at the deterioration just over the weekend. They were with him through the end of course. Diana wasn’t sure she’d be able to post about it so asked me to.
Run free, Monty. You were a goodest boy. ????????????????
Thanks for letting us know! Prayers lifted for Monty who is not suffering anymore. We all know the pain of losing a beloved pet/friend/family member. ????????????
Such a difficult thing to do and the most loving thing to do. Diana, you and your entire family are in our thoughts. Monty’s big spirit is now free to roam without pain.
You are in my thoughts Diana. Blinking tears thinking about the pets we love and how hard it is to say goodbye to them. Memories remain, but their presence in our daily lives is deeply missed. Take care
