Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.
Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).
The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.
So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?
…
NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

Wednesday Meese. Only 34 here – oh my! Only going up to 53 here in Kingston.
Puerto Rico
Good morning. Very chilly by Austin standards. I ran outside to see the Space Station, so cool to see. Actually wearing house shoes instead of sandals, and I guess tomorrow for work I’ll wear real shoes. Spending most of my non-working time trying to get the side gig working. For now, I’m watching astronomy and eating breakfast.
Good Wednesday moaning, Moosekind! It’s 40 F. and cloudy in Ashburn, going for a high of 56 F. later. After Dearly returns from Kaiser, where he’s getting his ‘flu jab and booster, we are going to do some errands.
Had the night from hell last night. The sleeping pill did not work. Conceivably it was owing to the booster jab I received in the morning. The arm is still tender and it’s uncomfortable for me to sleep on that side. Hope I can get a nap this afternoon.
I’m doing a BookChat on dk tonight. Does it start at 8, another? Still have a couple of paragraphs and some links to put in.
Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.
7 central, so 8 your time – looking forward to it! I need to see if they need someone for 11/16, I should be done with Bono’s memoir by then, I could post a review.
Dooo eeet! I will stop by and comment.
I have 11/16, unless someone wants it, then I said I’d go to the next week. I get the audio book on the 11th and I know I won’t be able to stop listening to his voice. I’ll definitely be done with the first listen by Sunday.
We got down to 19 overnight, it’s 31 now, and we’re heading for a warmer-than-yesterday 57. It’s sunny and the frost should be off the panels by the time the sun actually gets to them. We generated 8.8 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d- is 150.8 At least we’re doing better than the 2.5K system did. But not what a 4K system should be doing.
Far from being out of the house by 8:15, I wasn’t even out of my room by 8:15 this morning. Something about not being able to get to sleep before 2 am. . . I hate sinusitis. But the cats are fed, cat barf and litter boxes dealt with, and I’m eating my oatmeal right now. So my day has started as “normal” – just shifted down an hour. I’ll wait until it warms up some more before going to the credit union.
The computer fan is coming on more often than it did right after my son cleaned the computer and redid the heat paste. It’s running a little warmer too. Not hot or even hand-warmer warm, but not cool to the touch as it had been. I’m guessing it needs cleaning more often with both the evening fires and the furnace blower putting more gunk in the air. I hope that’s all it is. And a totally bizarre thing. My son took my laptop home to see if he could figure out what was wrong. Or pull the motherboard to destroy my data before e-cycling it if he couldn’t. He plugged it in and it started working. As if nothing had even been wrong with it in the first place. He’s still got it. I’m not sure what next. The Microsoft Office is way out of date – as in the license was up a couple of years ago. At least I think it was. Maybe I bought it and it’s still good. I really don’t remember as that was May of 2016. We shall see what we shall see.
I’m off to twitter to see how folks are doing and get my boosting started. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}
Good morning, 53, cloudy and smoky. Debbie is an easy guest, so we’re enjoying a quiet morning and will visit a garden shop and go to Fairhaven this afternoon. Best wishes to all.
Good morning Meese! 35 here in Kingston going up to 57.
Wishing MVP Kamala Harris a Happy Birthday today.
Isn’t she wonderful! And she’d better continue being the Vice President and then the President! I hate the stupid media that’s always saying, “Buttigieg in 2024? Val Deming in 2024?” Kamala is doing a great job and all the mediocre white males are pissed!
Brrr! I needed long sleeves for my walk, it’s 54 degrees. I cut it short because my achilles said so. But ¾ of a mile is better than nothing. Wearing actual shoes. It’s weird – I haven’t worn anything but sandals since spring.
I posted in the “helping Wednesday” diary yesterday (& last week), asking if anyone knows of work I can get. My bills are too big to ask for donations, but I thought people might have ideas. Got no response either time. I guess if there was something, they’d already be using that for the ongoing needs.
Well, I child-tend. My daughter walks dogs and just texted that she stayed overnight with two golden retrievers while their mom was out of town. She gives rides to the airport too, but you have a full-time job so that wouldn’t suit you.
It’s hard to get a legit work-at-home job that pays anything to speak of. Can you edit term papers for college kids?
The Wednesday helping diary, which I started, doesn’t get a lot of traffic since they banned me. Your book chat diary, unless you feel uncomfortable putting it there, would probably be a better place. Right after it’s posted to get the most eyes on it. As much as I hate to say it. Holding the Good Thoughts. {{{anotherdemocrat}}}

Good morning, meeses! Thursday …
It is 61 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 82. Sunny skies are in the forecast.
Diana, your gross governor, the Fleece Fascist, was here yesterday with the trumper running for governor, Kari Lake. They showed his faux populist face with the too perfect hairdo on my TV screaming that Katie Hobbs (our candidate) plans to open the borders and let criminals kill you in your beds! JHC on a popsicle stick, they really have no shame. I wish liars, instead of having their noses grow, would have their man parts shrink – the least we can do is stop them from breeding.
My plan to ignore news about the midterms ran afoul of wanting to get the local weather and news! In any event, I have a client issue that needs my attention so I can’t stay.
See all y’all later!
Jan, SmirkAss Goobernator Dumbkin is too annoying for words. Wish that some of that fleece would get Gorilla-glued to his man parts. That might give him something to think about other than ruining trans kids’ lives and causing them to commit suicide. That’s the next thing that’s going to happen, you just watch.
Problem is, because he fleeced some of the voters, he thinks he’s IN-VIN-CIBLE! I hope the coming blue tsunami leaves him and the other Rethugs gasping. As if women are going to FORGET that Roe was overturned! We’ll remember in Roevember.
Good Thursday morning, Meese, and a lovely morning it is as well. It’s a bit frosty—right now it’s 39 F., going up to 63 F. There’s not a cloud to be seen in the blue sky.
Dearly is having a nap in the bedroom, so I can’t go in there and take a shower in the adjoining bathroom. Will have to just fiddle about until I can get in there.
Yesterday was also a lovely day of the same sort. October is such a glorious month in drove to the spinney of woods behind our old house. The woods are on public land and have become an impenetrable forest, compared to 10 years ago. Anyway, Monty loved to dig a hole under the fence and escape into the woods, where he would bay to his heart’s content. I think his spirit would be happy to be back in the woods he loved so much. One day my descendants will scatter my own ashes there, so Monty and I will be in some sense reunited.
Blast, I’m crying again. I did enough of that all day yesterday.
I totally must start on the two stories I’m to write for the next issue of the quarterly. There’s one story I don’t even want to touch, and I’m going to ask that someone else do it. It doesn’t excite me at all as it’s been done before.
Did a diary for the first time in a long time on dk. It met with a better reception than I expected, considering that 95 percent of the readership had never heard of the William books. A couple of people had, however. It turned into a freewheeling discussion of the books everyone loved in childhood, so a good time was had by all, I think.
Liz Truss has resigned! I’m sure the British are thankful. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond and across the Big Damp.
It’s 42 heading for 73 – 80s for the weekend – and sunny. We won’t be below freezing again in for a bit. Yesterday we generated 8.5 KWHs and the m-t-d is 159 – and we still haven’t heard from SolarEdge. If we don’t hear from them by tomorrow I’m going to “put them on blast” on Twitter and see if that does anything.
It’s my birthday – 71 – also Bobby’s and Aji’s as well as Kamala’s (but she’s not a personal friend). So far I’ve gotten a nice coffee mug, a case of Q Ginger Beer, an ecard, and several email good wishes. And my friend and I are going out for coffee and maybe some shopping on Saturday.
Holding Good Thoughts for everybody, sending Healing Energy as needed. Off to twitter. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}
Happy Birthday!
Thank you.
Happy Birthday bfitz! Hope you enjoy your day.
I’m doing my best. :)
OMG, I’ve been so distraught I forgot it was your birthday today! Happy birthday, bfitz! Hope you have a wonderful day!
Thank you. It’s being just fine so far. (basket sent me a steak dinner for lunch. Yum!)
Happy Belated Birthday, bfitz! I hope you had a wonderful day!!
Thank you. I did indeed.
Good morning, 55, cloudy with rain showers and smoky air. It’s unpleasant to be outdoors and the garden shop we wanted to visit yesterday has closed temporarily due to the bad air quality so we’ll stay put this morning. The family is coming here for dinner tonight so I’ll have a busy afternoon and evening. Best wishes to all.
Good morning. Got in my mile. Apparently they’re going to use the state garages for F1 parking, there are barricades up on all the streets around here. Leaving work will be challenging this evening, but my southbound co-workers will have it worse, it looks like they’ll have to go north first. Anyway, in the office, eating breakfast & drinking tea. Early voting starts Monday!
Good morning, meeses! Friday …
It is 61 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 82. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast. At the time I take my morning walk, it should be 72.
I am wondering what people will use to communicate when Twitter is sold to Musk and then gutted. I am pretty sure I do not want to share a platform with people who get their blue checks by pleasing one of Putin’s puppets. I may just prune my follows – anyone who tweets garbage people into my timeline (unless it is a screencap) will be automatically unfollowed. I get a lot of news from the site including information on the college sports teams I follow. I guess the big question is if you take a 75,000 person organization and try to run it with 7,500 people, will the servers even stay up? I guess we will find out!
Good lord! A nazi apologist running for school board in Indiana said essentially that who among you would not have just gotten caught up in a group frenzy and murdered 6 million people in gas chambers. Sadly, he will probably get elected – there is no shame in tRump’s AmeriKKKa in promoting anti-semitism and genocide. Goddess help us.
Mrs. Jesse Barrett did one good thing – she rejected an emergency hearing at SCOTUS on the Wisconsin lawsuit to block the student loan debt cancellation program. I don’t know if she was hoping to take out a potent campaign issue against her party before the midterms or if she was convinced that the lawsuit – and all the lawsuits by random taxpayers who are claiming to be harmed by how the government spends money – is without merit because of the law. There is talk of Republicans planning to reinstate the loans should they regain power; I would hope that them even suggesting that would encourage young people (and their parents) to vote against Republicans forever.
Busy day here as I try to get caught up from an emergency client issue that ate up my morning yesterday. The good news is that tomorrow is the weekend when no new issues will arrive in my mailbox and I can work on what I want to work on.
See all y’all later!
Good morning, Moosekind! Sunny and 35 F. right now in Ashburn, going up to 66 F. Fifty-five years ago today we were married on a day very like this one.
There is no end to the right’s lunacy. I suppose you heard about the MAGAts intimidating a voter who tried to drop his ballot off at a dropbox. No mail or dropboxes for us! Dearly and I are going in person next Monday, taking Ethan and Mandy Beagle with us, to vote. I like to hear the “click” of the machine as it accepts my Democratic ballot.
When I read about Musky the Husky planning to fire 75 percent of the workforce of Tweeter I was furious! Right before Christmas. These goddamn capitalists seem determined to inflict misery on families right before Christmas. I’ll have to get off it if he owns it, because I’m not going to use a social medium that harbors DFG. I wish the laid off workers would start a platform called Bitter.
Today, if all goes well, we’ll come home with a new baby. I hope she likes us. I’ll post a picture of her later. We have a completely boring doctor visit first.
Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.
{{{Diana}}} Healing Energy to you & Dearly today. & of course Mandy Beagle likes you. She’d have let you know when you met her if she didn’t. moar {{{HUGS}}}
It’s 49 heading for 80 – not exactly summer for the next few days but it feels like it compared to the temps we’re had this past week – and sunny. We got a hair under 8 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d is 167.28 – we’ll at least reach and pass what the 2.5K system did (171) today. And still no word from SolarEdge.
I had a lovely birthday – basket send me a steak dinner! At lunch time because that’s 2 meals worth of food for me. It was delicious. I had a Q Ginger Beer with it (also a present – from Amelia) and then in the evening made myself a GF apple-blueberry crumble for dessert. Lots of emails, one actual card in the mail, a couple of ecards, a visit from my older son, and several phone calls from family and friends.
My son brought the laptop back. We haven’t a clue why it stopped working over 2 years ago or why it started again just now. Or whenever. I hadn’t checked it since about May of 2020. The Microsoft license is out of date. I didn’t think that really mattered since I didn’t realize how much Microsoft is involved in things. I don’t use the Office suite much. Just the Excel spreadsheet of my utility use and such. But while I could and did log on with Twitter, when I tried to get to my messages I got a pop up telling me I wasn’t logged into One Drive (I think that’s what it said – that was last night) and wouldn’t let me go further unless I did. I don’t even remember what my login is much less my password for that. And I guess I’ll get out that Microsoft thing basket got me in 2019 – in a bit, maybe tomorrow or Sunday as either my friend or my son might be able to help this clueless person – and see if I can figure it out. I doubt I’ll use the laptop that much but I’d like to use it at least a little regularly to be sure it’s working as a backup for the desktop.
Off to twitter. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}
It’s raining oursie my window today, yay! We still have an air quality warning but with the rain it smells much better and the sky is a familiar PNW grey color. The smoky yellow fog we have been enclosed in was unsettling.
RonK is back home now and everyone else is gone so the house is quiet again. I enjoyed my time with Debbie and family dinner here last night was fun, but I’m really tired so I’ll rest today. Best wishes to all.
Good morning. I slept in, and mostly did sleep. Today: groceries and cooking — I have beans soaking and in my groceries I ordered mustard greens & tomatoes with chilies. The F1 race is this weekend, and our soccer team is in the playoffs so I’m just gonna stay inside. I’m watching the news and eating breakfast.
Good morning, meeses! Saturday …
It is 66 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 81. Partly cloudy skies are in the forecast and rain is expected later in the afternoon into the evening. Snow on the mountains expected this weekend after temperatures cool down to the 40s overnight in the valley.
The courts blocked Biden’s loan cancellation program based on an appeal from the butthurt loan processors in Missouri who will lose the money they were making off students struggling with debt. It looks like the appeal process is expedited, though, with responses due early next week. The education department had hoped to start the cancellation process on Monday but that will obviously be delayed. Unless a new constitution is put in place over the weekend, the appeals court should find that this group of Republican Attorneys General lacks standing as the district court ruled. If they fail and appeal to SCOTUS, we can only hope that the finding of “no standing” from the 7th Circuit appeal (by Mrs. Jesse Barrett) is found when they look at the 8th Circuit appeal. That court is overseen by Burp Keggernaugh who has occasionally shown an interest in the constitution. Lots of young people’s lives are on hold as they likely have been planning to use their new creditworthiness to move out of their parent’s basement! I hope young people are paying attention to WHO wants them to have crippling debt for the rest of their lives – and vote accordingly.
I spent the morning updating some medical notes and trying to put together a plan for cleaning up the various stacks of papers I have lying around my office. Time to get back to it.
See all y’all later!
Good Saturday morning, Meese! It’s been a busy and emotional 24 hours for us, you may be sure. While I’m thinking about it, it’s a cool but lovely day here in Ashburn, current temp. 41 and an expected high of 71 F. It’s supposed to rain tomorrow—GOOD! Although I’ll believe it when I see it.
We picked up our new little girl at noon yesterday and signed the adoption papers. She’d had a bath and a nail trim in the morning while we were at the doctor’s office. It was touching how not only the manager, but about half the staff clustered together to see her off and take one last photo.
Mandy behaved very well on the way home. We’ve discovered that she’s (1) a love dog, (2) a Daddy’s girl, and (3) tall enough to get things off the counter so we’ll have to be very careful about leaving food up there! She is so sweet. I can feel my broken heart beginning to heal a bit.
I took her out every couple of hours for business meetings, but she only did No. 1. Came to find out she did No. 2 ALL over our bedroom carpet! Not on the washable pee pads I’d so carefully bought—no, on the carpet. I looked up a home remedy for dog poop stains and we’re trying that now. I do have a photo of her but don’t know how to post it.
She’s a very sweet dog. I finally persuaded her to sleep in her own bed and not on ours. We do not like dogs on our bed. M’Daughter says beagles are smart, so perhaps she’ll catch on quickly.
Well, I’m off for a BUSY day of cleaning! Elder Son, DIL, and Ethan are coming tomorrow to have dinner with us and leave Ethan for a sleepover. I’ll have to use the foldout loveseat for a bed for Ethan and me because I can’t ask him to sleep in a room with a stained carpet. So tomorrow will be spent tidying my office.
Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!
{{{Diana}}} I’m glad you’ve got Mandy home and your heart is beginning to heal. Puppies are puppies – and new places need to be “marked” – but yes, beagles are very smart so she should stop doing that soon. Not soon enough I know but soon. Healing Energy and moar {{{HUGS}}}
If you can email the photo to me, I will post it in the Sunday Welcomings.
We can Welcome Mandy (personal flaws and all)!
