Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.
Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).
The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.
So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. Saturday Meese. 63 and raining here in Kingston, going up to 67. I won’t complain – we need the rain given we still have a local drought.
Very little news re-Puerto Rico
A PUERTO RICO WITHOUT PUERTORRICANS: Demographer and Economist Predict Another Exodus Due to the Collapsing Infrastructure and the High Cost of Living on the Island
Good morning from wow-its-cold Austin. 40 might not sound cold to you, but until mid-afternoon yesterday, it was sandals and capri weather. My heater kicked on for the first time ever last night. Today’s plan: groceries…..and maybe I’ll take the walk I never got around to yesterday (we had several rounds of rain).
Good Saturday morning, Meese! It’s 63 F. and just lovely this moaning in Ashburn. The high will be 67 F. Hurricane Nolene did not bring any tornadoes, thunderstorms, or even very much rain. Would have liked some rain.
It’s been a very busy couple of days, with my having to Be Somewhere in the early morning. I don’t like that. This morning all I had to do was walk down to the all-purpose hall with my brownies for the bake sale. I have little luck with brownies. I baked them at 360 F., 10 degrees higher than the package said, and tested them repeatedly, 1 inch from the edge of the glass baking pans, with a toothpick. The nutless ones appear to have been cooked through but the walnut ones, although I left them in longer, didn’t get as cooked as I would have liked. Baked the little bastids 45 minutes, but, whatever. They looked okay enough to put in plastic bags and bring to the bazaar.
Later I’ll go along to the bazaar to see whether they have any small, round tablecloths or tray cloths. I also want a small, exquisite box to house a Christmas present for my stylist at the barber shop. She does for me what no one else does and I wouldn’t miss my weekly treat for anything!
Went to the doctor yesterday and discovered that I probably am not about to die. (I was already composing a farewell letter to the family in my head.) She prescribed a remedy for one part of the plumbing system. Dearly is picking the remedy up now, I hope. Her office phoned in the prescription to the pharmacy. Half an hour later I arrived at the pharmacy to be told they were “still working on it,” and to come back in half an hour. I did that. Then they told me they didn’t even have the stuff but would have it Monday. Sheet. Half an hour after I arrived home, I received a call from that pharmacy advising me that they did have it, after all, and when would I like to pick it up?
I was FUMING, screaming into the phone that they were all incompetent and bla-bla-bla and that I wasn’t moving from my house any more that day and my husband would pick it up the next day, which is today. Normally I’m a milquetoast, but this time I was furious.
So that’s that story. My writing group had a very good session on Thursday and we may acquire a new member. We received the sad news from Younger Son this morning that Mort, the white boxer, had died. At least he had a happy life with them for six years, when they rescued him from an animal shelter in Norfolk. Younger Son took him for walks and we all patted him and told him what a good boy he was. Sad. I really don’t want to be sad just now.
Mandy has pretty much stopped trying to get into bed with us, thank Goddess. Dearly said she is “too affectionate,” always trying to kiss him. We went to dinner at the Pub last night, just down the hall, returning to find she had TRASHED the kitchen. Gods, what a mess that was, cleaning up dog waste bags (not used, mind you, just ready to be used).
Well, that’s enough from me for one day. Y’all have a great Saturday! I’m watching with bated breath for the results from Nevada, very happy about Mark Kelly!
It’s 29 (wind chill 19) on a bright sunny day – but there’s snow on the solar panels so they won’t be producing until the sun and wind remove it. Yesterday we got 5.6 KWHs and the m-t-d at 66.8 is still (barely) on track for 180.
Yay! for AZ. Now for NV. And Holding the Good Thoughts/candles for the run-off in GA.
I got a couple of solid – but obviously late – chunks of sleep so I don’t know why I’m groggy/dragging but I am. Oh well. I’m going to have to go to the store today or tomorrow. I’m almost out of ground flax seed. That’s a natural source of alpha-linoleic acid and also is used in lieu of xanthan gum in GF baking. I thought I had another package of it but I don’t. sigh. First twitter. Let it warm up some before I go anywhere. And let the streets clear – football game today, 11:00 kickoff. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}
It SNOWED where you are, bfitz? Day-yum! ‘Tis too early!
It was just a dusting and is gone now. Actually, before climate change we used to get our first dusting of snow in October. {{{HUGS}}}
Good morning, 32 and partly sunny. It’s taken awhile for our furnace repair and the new thermostat to adjust. At first it was way to hot, but the indoor temp is finally just comfortably warm. We set the temp at 68 and Barry warned me it would take a while for the system to sync with all radiators so I’ve just left it alone. But I have been going outdoors to cool off!
I was in my sewing room yesterday, making one rookie mistake after another. Oh well, I fixed my errors and the distraction from election angst table runner I’m making is serving it’s purpose. One more sewing session today and hopefully more election good news from Nevada.
Best wishes to all.
