Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: February 19th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

Morning low of 52 degrees in the Desert Southwest with an expected daytime high of 63. Cloudy skies with a chance for rain is the forecast.

Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Sunday Meese. 28 here in Kingston NY going up to 48.
I’ve been really annoyed by paucity of coverage of MVP Harris in Munich by “our side” (loads of European kudos)

    Puerto Rico

    • Either Ayman Moyhadeen or Katie Phang had a story on it this morning – it’s hard to tell the difference between the shows.

    • Sis, if I can EVER crawl out from under the crush, I will research and write an article on MVP titled, “Embrace Her, Don’t Erase Her.” All these freeps on Twitter trying to say Pete Buttigieg should be the VP in ’24, bla, bla, bla, can go straight to Hell, Norway. Andrew Yang, who’s as crazy as if he’s high on bhang, blubbers that she doesn’t do anything. He can take himself off—the road to perdition is that way, Andy-Bandy.

  3. Good morning. Cool enough for long sleeves, but that would be “warm” to most of y’all. I’ve got my tea steeping, watching the news & eating breakfast. Today is the Austin Marathon, there’s only 1 street impacted that I have to cross to get to church, but I’ll still leave 20 minutes early. And take a book, in case the wait time is actually less than I fear. I walked yesterday afternoon — 1.5 mi, no running segments. Today: tea, church, another walk and maybe some cooking.

  4. Good Sunday morning, Moose Peeps! This morning when I arose it was still dark, of course, so I looked at the weather app on my phone. It said for Ashburn, “snow from 7 to 8,” followed by light drizzle. Huh? It’s partly cloudy with weak sunlight, not a trace of precip.! Moreover, it’s 39 F. going up 60 F. today!

I am more convinced than ever that these weather freaks spread marijuana jam on their toast and scarf it down, possibly with weed-flavored coffee, before they lurch to the office.

Never mind. Breakfast has been had. Today I must finish that article or die in the attempt. I want to write to my cousin. I want to start filling out the tax return, which does not take me 30 minutes, it’s more like three days of groaning, cursing, “troubling deaf heaven with my bootless cries,” and so forth.

Poor President Carter. A noble man who won the Nobel Peace Prize, something that DFG aspired to, but which will never happen. Glad I don’t live in Afghanistan. If women are forbidden to see male doctors, and if women are forbidden to become doctors that would take care of women, the population of Afghanistan will die out. Lawks, have you seen street shots of Kabul in the Shah’s time? Girls were wearing miniskirts and had uncovered hair! The Shah, of course, was a creep, something like a cross between Bashir Assad (or whateverinell his name is) and Idi Amin.

Today I may do my Ancestry.com test and send it off on Tuesday.

Hope everyone is well. Please, POTUS, give Ukraine fighter jets!

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  5. It’s 48 heading for 62, clouds are moving in again, and to the best of my memory we got just over 6 KWHs yesterday. I can’t check right now because I’m getting the same 505 Error I got yesterday morning with my PV data center. It did come back in the late morning yesterday and hopefully will again.

The news is sad. aitchdee went into the hospital late yesterday morning and passed about 12 hours later. Basket was with her at the end. That’s all I know. She doesn’t need them anymore but he could certainly use prayers (or whatever your Tradition calls them). ????????????

Sunday chores done. Eating breakfast. Off to twitter & Dee’s diary. {{{HUGS}}} to the Meeses.

      • Basket always kept a low profile over there. And with her health issues, so did aitchdee. I don’t know who would write even a short R.I.P. diary for her. But I hope somebody does. The old-timers would want to at least know.

        • Do you know who any of the people she was close to on DKos are, who are still there?

          • I’ve asked basket & will tell you what he says. But she was a member of Black Kos, Latino Kos, Muslims at Daily Kos, Caregiving Kos, SF Kos, Central Valley Kos, The Village – I think those are all still active. She was a member of a bunch more that I don’t think are active any longer.

  6. Good day, 45 and cloudy in my garden today. I’ve had a lazy morning with reading around the fun parts of the internet (gardening, music and design sites) and family phone calls. So now I need to get busy with the rest of my day! Best wishes to all.

  7. Monday Meese. The bizarre warm spell continues here in Kingston – 30 going up to 58 today.

    Puerto Rico

  8. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

It is 54 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 6. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast with a slight chance of rain. Yesterday it was cloudy most of the day with the sun breaking through in the late afternoon, enough to be rewarded by a spectacular alpenglow. This week promises more ups and downs – the overnight 30s are not done with us yet.

I started this comment about an hour ago and got sidetracked! I spent most of the weekend watching sporting events and staying away from news. I will check the headlines and save some things in pocket.

    See all y’all later!

  9. Good morning. I slept in, will walk later. Yesterday I did 1.52 mi. There was a lot of drama yesterday at Spoutible. I haven’t deleted my account but I am really disappointed. It’s not going to be the Twitter alternative, because certain authors aren’t welcome. And for me until astronomy accounts go there, I’m keeping my twitter account. For now, I’m watching astronomy and eating breakfast. Later, I’ll cook lunch for the week.

  10. Good gray Monday morning, Moosekind! It’s 48 F. and cloudy in Ashburn. This week’s weather will be a roller coaster: 79 F. predicted for Thursday (can I wear shorts?) and 39 F. predicted for Saturday. Honestly, this climate change sucks. The flowers are not going to know where to look. Saw the blades of daffodils pushing up when I went for a walk recently.

Had a very bad night, did housework (badly needed) instead of writing, so I know what I have to do today. How am I going to get quotes from five interviewees into 600 words? I can but try.

Our President went to Ukraine to see their president! Isn’t that great? Can you imagine Defeated Former Guy doing that?

Basket posted pictures of Harper with her dog, when she still had it, on FB. Poor Harper. I feel so sad for her, and for basket. Cruel fate!

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  11. It’s 59 heading for 71 today. Warmest for the week. But not by much for the next few days. Even the overnights aren’t getting below 40 this week. Yesterday we generated 10.27 KWHs and brought the m-t-d to 129.58 – which is at least better than we did in Feb 2021. Next “milestone” is the 148 the 2.5K system did in 2015. We shall see what we shall see.

Basket did a tweet for aitchdee/Harper – let’s see if I can paste it here.
    https://twitter.com/nyankoframe/status/1627428509177249792

    I’ve got crocuses blooming. And daffodil blades just about everywhere. Some look like they’ve got flower buds up as well but I can’t see them that closely from the house. So far none of the trees have put out buds. Thank heavens. April in February doesn’t last. sigh. Off to twitter. {{{Meeses}}}

  12. Good morning, 46 and raining in my garden today. In between rain showers we enjoyed some time outside by the wood stove fire last night. It was fun to light the candles, wrap up in blankets, and pass the leash so Elsa could explore new territory. She is very curious and while she does respond to her name letting a small black dog off leash in the dark is not a good idea. Best wishes to all.

  13. Tuesday Meese. 34 here in Kingston going up to 45 with rain.
    Biden-Harris 2024

    Puerto Rico

  14. Good morning. It got into the 80s yesterday, and warmer today. Did my walk in the afternoon, will take a short lunch so I can walk in the morning today. Didn’t get any donations from my diary at the orange place yesterday, will write another diary soon. For now, I’m eating breakfast & watching astronomy.

  15. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

It is 52 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 55. It is mainly cloudy now with more clouds and rain expected this afternoon. The weather service has issued a high wind alert with winds of 30 to 40 mph and gusts to 55. The warning is for blowing dust which can be very nasty – I hope the rain tamps it down somewhat.

Today is primary election day in Wisconsin where 12% of the voters will pick two people to run for a Supreme Court seat in April that will determine the balance of the court (stay conservative or flip liberal). In the northern Milwaukee suburbs, Republicans will pick a challenger in an open race to fill a Republican retirement seat in the state senate (Democrats have their nominee). Sadly, one must hope that the crazy election-denier wins because if anyone even mildly sensible is chosen and this seat goes red in April, the Wisconsin legislature will have a super-majority and can override any Evers vetoes and impeach and remove any state office holder including the governor and every liberal member of the court. What a ghastly mess – I am glad I am not directly impacted by it except for incredible sadness for what Wisconsin once was and what it may end up becoming. It will only get worse as young people graduate from Wisconsin colleges and leave the state to the old MAGAts to finish its descent into trashdom.

I think I have the proper mix of determination and medication to get some work done at my computer today. I made quite a bit of progress on tax returns yesterday and will set it aside until Wisconsin tax forms are finalized in TurboTax (new “promised” date is 3/2). Now I have to do January accounting which had to wait until I was sure I had end of year numbers correct. I still need to google how to do one aspect of the end-of-year accounting but I don’t think it materially impacts anything. I have been known to agonize over the proper categorization of a $1.10 expense – I need to let go of that.

    See all y’all later!

  16. Good Tuesday morning, Meese! Well, whaddaya know, it’s 43 F. and sunny, with a nice assortment of white clouds straggling across the blueness. Today’s high will be…let’s see…60 F. at 2 p.m. Lots of wind will be screeching, starting at 1 p.m. today. By that time my lunch and shopping should be largely finito.

This morning when I arose at 6 I could see by looking at the screened porch that we’d had a pre-dawn shower, as the edges of the porch were wet and I could hear water gurgling in the gutters. It’s gone now.

Having lunch today in my old neighborhood with Darling Niece, Goddess willin’ and the creek don’t git up. We’ll commiserate with each other about our chocolate addiction and how we really need to start lifting weights and losing 10 pounds, and so on and so on. My New Year’s resolution of “Less choc, more walk” is doing fine on the walk part, but not the less choc.

Seems incredible that half the country from west to east will receive 2 feet of snow and the Mid-Atlantic will experience temps in the 80s! OMG.

Was so proud of our President yesterday! Remember how Thing didn’t want to go to the American Cemetery in France on Armistice Day because it was RAINING, and anyway, guys who fight and die for their country are “losers”? Jeez, what a contrast. I’ll willingly and gladly vote for Biden in November ’24, and for our Madame Vice President.

Today is my sweet daughter-in-law’s birthday. I’m sending her flowers. She works so hard and is such a darling! Every year she gives me an “Ethan” calendar for Christmas, which incorporates photos of Ethan taken through the year.

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  17. It’s 47 heading for 67 and mostly sunny at the moment. Clouds are supposed to move in mid morning. I hope the widget is wrong about that. Yesterday we generated 11.25 KWHs and brought the m-t-d to140.83 – if we can’t get just 8 today we’ll beat the 2.5K system’s February with a week left in the month.

Nothing new under the sun. Evil people still being evil. And still dividing people who “ought” to be hanging together if only to keep from being hung separately. Which is what I think is happening with/at Spoutible. The (mostly WW) Romance Writers, famous for their attacks on WOC writers, is attacking Spoutible for being anti-LBGTQ+ and anti-sex-workers and anti-sex-victims. The worst I personally know about Spoutible is that there doesn’t seem to be a way to report that I can’t read my Notifications – they disappear when I go to the Notifications page. I’ve read several rundowns of issues with the policies – unintended consequences and all that – that may or may not be correct. And may or may not be fixable without causing other unintended consequences (as one of the people doing a write up on the policies admitted). They’re clearer than Kos’s “don’t be a dick” anyway. But what it really comes down to is that if you try to protect your users from bots, trolls, and other harassers said bots, trolls, and harassers will attack your site policies. As long as both places are up, I will maintain a presence in both. (And hope my Notifications issue gets fixed by magic since I don’t have any other recourse.)

    A lot of other issues there’s nothing new under the sun about, too. But there are still good, kind, caring people in the world – like the folks here at Moose. For which I am very thankful. Off to twitter. {{{Meeses}}}

    • That’s not what happened. Courtney Milan (not a WW), asked whether that “no links to sites that have sex” included links to her books, which do have sex in them. She read the TOS, and being a former contract law professor and clerk to 2 SCOTUS justices, pointed out some problems. One of the authors who writes as Kit Rocha (also not a WW), also asked about the linking to their site thing. Bouty pitched a hissy fit worthy of Elno. Said they wanted to be able to post porn in people’s feeds. In her legal career, Courtney was harassed that way by a federal judge in California and helped bring him down. It’s a pretty famous case. She’s actually one of the heroes of the Me Too movement, Bouty could had just clicked on her bio and known who she was. I haven’t deleted my account at the whale place but I’m scaling way back there and trying to figure out Mastadon.

      • Well that’s nasty of Bouty! Courtney Milan is a hero to a lot of women and I have been following her for a long time – she once even replied to me in a thread related to a Supreme Court thing some years ago! I can’t use Spoutible because I don’t have a throwaway cell phone number and without being able to reply or Spout it is less than useful.

If you are interested in learning more about Mastodon, let me know. I am very close to having my notes gathered enough to write up a simple guide to getting started that I will post here. I have found a ton of accounts to follow on a lot of subjects and I can now scroll through my timeline and find things to read.

Here is Courtney’s Mastodon Account: @courtneymilan@toot.community

        • Sry folks. From my pov this isn’t what is happening. I support Chris 100%.
Courtney Milan and those who want porn on spoutible can kmba.

      • Thank you for that side of the battle. Since I’m not on my TL much in either place I only got bits and pieces. What disappoints me most thus far is not the original argument that should have been a rational discussion (which is bad enough), but the followers on both sides attacking in a way reminiscent of bros on DK. sigh. I guess people are people. Or something.

  18. Good morning, 43 and mostly cloudy, but the sky is brighter than it was yesterday. I don’t have to do anything with people for a few days so I’m going to finish clipping the ivy and do a few more outdoor tasks. I enjoy the time in my garden but I get so tired that I’m not good company after. Basically I just shower and then keep my legs up until it’s time to go to bed. Ron is used to seeing me that way but the rest of the family becomes alarmed :)

    Best wishes to all.

  19. Wednesday Meese. 27 going up to 39 with rain/snow/sleet later in the day.
